Stewart Donald Completes Takeover Of Sunderland

Featured Image

A consortium led by Steward Donald has completed a £40m takeover of Sunderland. They have been in negotiations over taking over the club for a number of weeks from now former owner Ellis Short, with the deal including an agreement to terminate the contract of ex-manager Chris Coleman.

Texan businessman Short, who has ended a nine-year spell as owner by writing off the club’s debt, received £40m in return for the League One club.

The English Football League has ratified the change of ownership.

Stewart Donald says the club is now “debt-free” and added that he hopes to appoint a new manager to succeed Chris Coleman “within the next seven days”.

Donald said: “We have given Ellis £40million. That’s the deal price. His debt, he’s now tied it up – and that’s now gone from the football club, and it’s not been ported to us. The reality is Sunderland is debt-free.

“League One transfer fees aren’t too high – so the budget for Sunderland is going to be pretty hefty. It’s going to be a lot more than many of the other teams have got.”

Methven said: “I’ve known Ellis for a while. I spoke to him about five weeks ago and he had decided to sell by the end of the season. He felt the situation was drifting with other groups and I had the right guy to take it over.

“Ellis has been extremely constructive throughout, helping us get it over the line in the time he indicated. There is a considerable cash requirement this summer. The discussion with Ellis is that we would pay him over a period of time.

“We hope to see a new manager very soon. We would hope probably seven days maximum before he get a new manager. We need as much of the summer as possible to assemble the squad.”

Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp Warns Real Madrid Not To Rely On European Experience In Champions League Final

Featured Image

Jurgen Klopp has warned Real Madrid that their greater experience of Champions League finals will not count for everything against a Liverpool side playing for their “dreams”

Liverpool will walk out at the NSC Olimpiyskiy as slight underdogs on Saturday night, with their opponents looking to be crowned champions of Europe for a third consecutive season.

Zinedine Zidane’s side is stocked with players of Champions League pedigree. Cristiano Ronaldo alone will have won as many European Cups as Liverpool if Madrid are victorious this weekend.

Yet while Madrid have a recent track record of success in this competition, Liverpool have plenty of belief in their own abilities and a desire to see their remarkable run to the Kiev final end triumphantly.

“I don’t want to play that game,” Jurgen Klopp said, when asked whether Madrid should be considered favourites. “They are more experienced. That is a fact. If there is an experienced market, they should sell it because then they would be even more rich. Experience is very important in life but not the only thing. It is an important to be more experienced but you can level it with desire, attitude, work rate and that is what I love in football.

“We made our own experience. We are not as long together as Real Madrid because they play these finals pretty much with the same team, so as a group they are very strong. That is all fact but it is still football and we have a chance and let’s give it a try.

“Let’s go there and try to perform on a level which maybe people would say it is not possible for us, but it is possible. We did all the things we need plenty of times already in the Champions League campaign and now we need to do it again.

“I saw the game against Villarreal [Madrid’s 2-2 draw on Saturday] and it looks like they can do whatever they want against a good side like Villarreal. Still no one knows if [Karim] Benzema will start or [Lucas] Vazquez. It is a really good football team but we are a really good football team.

“We are full of desire and we really work for our dreams. We hope we can show that and if we can show that, that is all.”

Champions League Final: Dejan Lovren Ready For Cristiano Ronaldo Challenge

Featured Image

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren is ready for the challenge of stopping Cristiano Ronaldo in Saturday’s Champions League final but says that task will have to be a team effort

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in last season’s final, a 4-1 victory over Juventus, and the prolific Portuguese forward is the only player to have scored in three Champions League finals.

Lovren believes Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who has scored 44 goals in all competitions, can be placed in the world’s top three players alongside Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

“Ronaldo, Salah, Messi, you need to respect these players a lot and (Ronaldo) is already (proven) in this kind of game, 12-15 years, every year he scores more than 30 goals, even if he has a bad season he scores 30 goals,” Lovren told reporters.

“But we play in the Premier League against the best strikers in the world and we know how to defend like a team. We will stop him together. In some parts of the game it will be one against one and it will be tough but it is a challenge that I will be ready for,” the Croatian said.

It will be the 28-year-old Croat’s first Champions League final.

“It is a dream come true for everyone. I always dreamed to be in the Champions League final and I dreamed one day to lift the trophy,” he said.

“We have the biggest chance in our lives. For some of us, maybe it’s the only one, for some of us many more hopefully, but we need to be proud of ourselves.

“We really deserve to be in the final, and hopefully in many years we can say to our kids and family that we did our best and won the trophy. We have nothing to lose. We will give our best, everyone is fit and ready and we can’t wait to start.”

#WorldCupWith360nobs: Mauro Icardi Omitted As Argentina Name World Cup Squad

Featured Image

Mauro Icardi, the joint top goalscorer in Italy’s Serie A this season, was left out of Argentina’s World Cup squad on Monday as coach Jorge Sampaoli named his 23 players for next month’s tournament in Russia.

Sampaoli named just four forwards in his squad with Lionel Messi, Paulo Dybala, Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain all selected.

That meant there was no place for Icardi, who scored 29 league goals for Inter Milan this season.

The squad is talented but inexperienced, with the 14 players never having been to a World Cup before, and it is not immediately clear how Argentina will line-up for their first game, against Iceland on Saturday 16 June.

Although Argentina boast some of world football’s most prolific strikers, they have struggled for goals in competitive matches, scoring just 19 times in the South American group’s 18 qualifying matches. Only Bolivia scored fewer.

“We’ve decided on these names after a lot of analysis in every position,” said Sampaoli. ”Cristian Ansaldi can play on either side. Meza gives you options either on the outside or on the inside of the pitch.

“I spoke with Messi and I saw him as very enthusiastic for what’s coming up. Physically, he’s doing well. Sergio Aguero has been training normally since last week. Mercado won’t have any problems. We will see how Biglia arrives.”

Argentina, who lost in the World Cup final four years ago but only qualified for this year’s tournament thanks to a win in their final qualifying match, have been drawn in Group D alongside Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria.

Santi Cazorla Departs Arsenal Following End Of Contract

Featured Image

Santi Cazorla will leave Arsenal next month after the club confirmed they will not be renewing his contract.

Spanish club Villarreal are apparently in “advanced negotiations” to bring Cazorla back to his former club for pre-season training.

“Santi is always one of my favourite players to watch. His natural ability with both feet, his speed of thought and movement were central to our best performances in recent years.

“He plays with a joy and freedom which is very rare. We wish him well for the future and thank him for his important contribution to our club,” said Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

The Spaniard made 180 appearances and scored 29 for the Gunners in six years at the club, having joined from Malaga in 2012.

Ambode Inaugurates 82-Member Council Of Traditional Rulers In Lagos

Featured Image

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Monday, May 21, inaugurated an 82-member council of traditional rulers.

During the inauguration ceremony, Ambode charged them to work with the government and justify the confidence reposed in them.

Inaugurating the council in Alausa, Ikeja, the governor also urged the traditional rulers to continue to address anti-social behaviour in their communities and be at the forefront of the state’s tourism campaign.

He said by law, the council of Obas and Chiefs was to advise the governor on chieftaincy matters and any other matter of public policy concerning traditional rulers or any other class of chiefs.

“It is also to advise the governor on matters relating to customary laws or cultural affairs, inter-communal relations and maintenance of public order in the state.”

Mr Ambode said the new council was coming at a time of momentous changes in the evolution of the state, especially with the efforts by his administration to ensure that every community felt government’s presence.

“Our government has immense regard for all our royal fathers and traditional rulers, and we will always welcome advice from them to ensure social harmony and ensure peaceful coexistence.

“The most important ingredient for development in the state is peace and security, and you all have an important role to play in this regard,’’ he said.

“As custodians of the culture and tradition of our people, our royal father’s should also be at the forefront of our tourism campaign.

“A significant aspect of tourism is our culture and historical science which falls under your jurisdiction.

“This must be showcased to the world and our government is channelling a lot of resources to regenerate the environment and creation of tourist hubs across the state.

“This project requires your support and cooperation,’’ the governor said.

Mr Ambode restated that traditional institution of kingship in the society regardless of the advent of modernity remained the rallying point for the generality of all the people.

“It has been serving as a veritable vehicle for the dissemination of government policies, programmes and mobilisation of the populace,’’ he said.

He commended the dissolved council for serving the state with high sense of patriotism during their five year tenure.

Seyi Shay Talks About Falling On Stage and Her “Electric Package” TV Blunder In New Documentary

Seyi Shay Talks About Falling On Stage and Her “Electric Package” TV Blunder In New Documentary – #IAmAnElectricPackage
Nigerian singer Seyi Shay who is one of the most revered female voices in African music is debunking the idea that celebrities should always put on a front that is without flaws.
In a new compelling mini-documentary, the singer addressed her infamous 2016 television blunder when she mistakenly asserted that the acronym “EP” (which originally means Extended Play) stood for “Electric Package”. She also detailed the painful aftermath of her embarrassing fall during a performance at the 2017 AFRIMA awards.
Speaking on her blunder on TV, she explained; I wasn’t really thinking about the question and I really wasn’t thinking about the answer. I knew that the people asking the questions were trying to catch me out so I was kind of maybe feeding into the game a little bit”.
Detailing her embarrassing on-stage fall experience, she explained; I was just in the moment of my performance and really trying to give my best. But when I fell down and finished my performance, and got off stage and started trending because of that fall, I was in mixed emotions. For me, it really hurt when people had really bad things to say because I always try to give my best”.
On how much toll all of these have taken on her, she revealed; I was hurt many times. I’m human. These things are funny until you are on the receiving end of the insults. But I have accepted that this is the price I have to pay.
Seyi Shay has also just released a new 6-track EP titled “Electric Package” inspired obviously by the infamous TV blunder. The EP according to her is a vocal reflection of all some of the changes she has accommodated. “I represents my wholeness in musical form”. The new EP according to her represents self-acceptance.

IBB Terrorises Buhari As Saraki Transmits I-G – Tunde Odesola

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

You can call me a fool for all you care, I won’t bat an eyelid. I have the right to be foolish, anyway. But move away from my arm’s length if you call me stupid, for stupidity is mental retardation simplified. Foolishness is a choice. Stupidity is not, it’s endowed. It’s wired to the DNA. As adjectives, ‘foolish’ is lacking a good sense or judgment but ‘stupid’ is lacking in intelligence or the inability to think. Stupidity is the crown on an empty skull. Foolishness is the obstinacy that dares the lamb to look at the tiger in the eyes. With a little more caution, the lamb could, by keeping silent in hiding, escape a bloody journey into the belly of the black-striped, gold-furred tiger with flaming eyes, stalking the jungle.

This piece was written by Babafemi Adesina Badejo and was first published on The Punch. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Then Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari blazed into power in the very last minute of 1983. His coup was a welcome blow that broke the spine of the inept and corrupt Shehu Shagari administration which was more popular for wearing long caps on idle heads than arresting the debilitating inflation crippling the economy. Fire bellowed down the nostrils of the Buhari tiger, clawing, tearing and mauling perceived impediments to national greatness. Everybody feared the tiger until a certain lamb from the largest state in the country, Niger, came to tame it two years after. This Niger lamb was beautiful and pleasing to the eyes, its baaing was melodious to the ears; everybody who feared the tiger loved the iamb of the lamb. The furry lamb was a paradox that unnerved and reassured simultaneously. Not very long after being crowned king, however, the corrupt-wind of genetic mutation blew the way of the lamb, which sloughed its fur for scales and metamorphosed into a snake. The lamb’s harmless mouth turned into striking serpentine jaws of poison, savagery replaced genteelness, and evil stalked the land unstoppably. Sometime in the August of 1985, the snake chased out the tiger from the lair, taking over the kingdom.

I’ve never set my eyes on a scrotal sac with one ball. But I’ve often heard the Yoruba describe any man wailing meaninglessly as having only one ball in his sac. What’s the link between wailing and one scrotal ball? Does wailing complement a missing ball? Does wailing alleviate the pains or absence of a missing ball? With the way Nigerians wail meaninglessly on social media, compulsory medical check on scrotal sacs across the country won’t be a bad idea. However, it’s not only Nigerian proletariats that wail, Nigerian leaders wail, too. Last week, former man of steel, President Buhari, lamented in Abuja during the inauguration of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. He said he was ousted in 1985 and detained for three years by Brig Gen Ibrahim Babangida because he (Buhari) was fighting corruption as of the time. The President said, “I was removed as the head of state, detained for three years and people whom we recovered stolen money from were given back their money and I remained in detention up until my mother had to die to save me from detention.”

Mr President, you’re free to think Nigerians are fools, but don’t you think we are stupid. In our foolishness, we can clearly see the lie in your statement that your mother waited three years to save you from detention. Why would a mother wait for 1, 095 days to save her son? What if death had knocked on your soul before her intervention? Oh, your media aides would say, “The President was speaking figuratively.” Yes, he was speaking politically, too. When a figure of speech borders on representing an idea better or worse than it really is, it is called an exaggeration. So, is the President blowing issues out of proportion in order to gain political sympathy? The President said he was toppled 33 years ago because of corruption and that the money he retrieved from corrupt politicians were returned to them, right? And Babangida, who toppled him, is still alive. Please, where should the anti-corruption war of Buhari begin from, if it is only to set the records straight and debunk the claims that his military administration was vindictive? So, Buhari knows some individuals with stolen public wealth, and he keeps quiet and feels comfy about it? What manner of leader is he? A weakling? There, surely, exists a difference between foolishness and stupidity.

Foolishness and stupidly rule the Nigerian online political space where innumerable people talk inanities all at once. Some talk and say nothing. Some applaud roguish politicians defecating on our collective sensibilities. In Animal Farm, George Orwell depicts the proletariats as stupid. Are Nigerian proletariats better? Foolishness and stupidity went round the bend last week as another President, Bukola Saraki, tackled the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris. Saraki, the President of the Nigerian Senate, last Wednesday, accused the IGP of planning to implicate him in the trial of some suspected hired killers arrested in Kwara State. Hitherto, there was no love lost between Saraki’s flimsy Senate and the unmeet police boss as Saraki and his gang of senators had repeatedly invited Idris to appear before the Red Chamber futilely. If the Senate was planning not to pass the budget of the police – in retaliation of the I-G’s scorn, a quick rethink wasn’t unlikely as Idris wouldn’t think twice before withdrawing police orderlies from our self-serving senators. Who wan die? Not these senators gulping billions of naira in taxpayers’ funds monthly with nothing to show for it.

In the heat of the back-and-forth kafuffle between the senate and the I-G, a video clip went viral. In the video, Idris, who was reading an address at a public function, was portrayed as being unable to coherently read his address, needlessly repeating the word ‘transmission’. A man in a dark suit and blue shirt stepped in to help with the speech which being ruffled by the wind while Idris bungled on. A closer look at the video, however, shows that Idris’ lips and the audio don’t sync. The IG, though a lawyer, doesn’t possess the gift of the garb. He speechifies the English Language in a laborious way. With its back pinned against the wall, the police force released its version of the video showing the IGP reading an error-free address. The two versions were from the same Kano event, but the part wherein the man in suit stepped in to offer a helping hand was excised from the version released by the police – suggesting that Idris truly made a couple of mispronunciations while delivering his speech. His traducers, however, fanned the embers of the innocuous error into a horrible conflagration by manipulating the audio to make the I-G sound as repeating himself. The Presidency later joined in the fray by describing the video as doctored. I’m not a fan of the IGP as I consider many of his actions unbecoming since he was appointed by Buhari on March 21, 2016. But a fool worth his salt would see through the deft doctoring of the video. That a lot of Nigerians believe that the IG could, in a two-minute, 18-second video, publicly repeat ‘transmission’ 13 times, and ‘I mean’ six times, shows why the political class continues to manipulate us with the stupidest of ploys. A bosom friend, Shola Ogunjimi, however, has a different opinion. He said Nigerians knew that the video was doctored, but that they believed it because of the brainlessness that attended some of Idris’ past actions. A former Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Osun State Council, Prince Ayoade Adedayo, who felt no pity for Idris, believes there is more to the video than what the police are claiming.

I ask, why is Idris suddenly being portrayed as deficient in speech and reading now that some powerful people are being linked to some suspected hired killers? Why?

Messi Wins Golden Shoe And Pichichi Awards For The Fifth Time

Featured Image

Lionel Messi has finished the campaign as the top goalscorer in Europe and is set to be confirmed as the winner of the 2017-18 European Golden Shoe after smashing 34 goals for Barcelona in their Liga-winning campaign.

The Argentine came off the bench late on as Barca rounded off their season with victory over Real Sociedad at Camp Nou, as he  also claims the Pichichi Trophy for the top goalscorer in the Primera Division.

While Mo Salah ensured he had pulled a strong competition for long periods in the race for the golden shoe, Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane were again left in the Argentinian’s slipstream.

The Argentine’s 34 Liga goals translate to a Golden Shoe score of 68 based on the league’s coefficient, leaving him clear of nearest challengers Mohamed Salah (32/64) and Harry Kane (30/60).

The Argentine’s achievements mean he has now won five Pichichi’s to Ronaldo’s three, while he is also set to overtake Ronaldo’s tally of four Golden Shoes with his most recent victory.

Messi also broke the 30-goal mark in La Liga for the seventh season in the last nine, having failed to reach that tally only in the 2013-14 and 2015-16 campaigns.

‘Over 100 Secondary Students In Edo Trafficked To Libya In 4 Months’

Featured Image

There are indications that over 100 students of Idogbo Secondary School in Benin, Edo state have been trafficked to Libya in the last four months.

The Senior Special Assistant to Gov Godwin Obaseki on Human trafficking and illegal migration, Mr Solomon Okoduwa, who stated this in Benin on Sunday, May 20, during an advocacy programme, said the fact was revealed to him by some teachers in the school, concerned about how the institution has become the harvesting ground for traffickers.

He, however, assured that the government will not allow the evil to continue to thrive in the state, adding that campaign against trafficking will be raised while the state Task Force Against Human Trafficking will be on the trail of the human traffickers.

Okoduwa also warned the students to be wary of the antics of the traffickers who are bent on deceiving them into embarking on the dangerous journey.

He continued: “Henceforth, report anyone who tells you to travel to Europe. They are simply taking you through Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea and you may eventually end up in Libya.

“The number of students that have been trafficked from your school in this short period is overwhelming.

“The truth is that many of them might have been imprisoned there or facing one challenge or the other.

“Taking the route of Sahara Desert and other illegal routes is hellish.

“Many died of hunger, many were drowned in the Mediterranean Sea in search of greener pastures.

“Worst still, the families of those people that died on their journey were made to pay for the travel expenses, when unknown to them their loved ones have gone to the great beyond.

“If anyone tells you to travel abroad through Libya, tell him or her capital ‘NO’. If you must travel for any reason, travel the right way.”

41 Items Still Banned Under Nigeria-China Currency Swap Deal – CBN

Featured Image

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said the Nigeria-China currency swap deal would not cover the importation of the 41 items banned in its 2015 circular on items not valid for foreign exchange.

CBN’s acting Director, Corporate Communications, Mr Isaac Okorafor, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

According to him, this will ensure the currency deal does not stifle local companies and make Nigeria a dumping ground for Chinese goods.

“The fear is unfounded and I’ll give you reasons why.

“The first one is that we are going to focus on exports to China. Also, remember that we already export cassava products to China as well as leather, hides and skin amongst others.

“So this deal will open further the export market to China.

” Also, I want Nigerians to know that the items that will come in are not necessarily finished goods, so the issue of Nigeria becoming a dumping ground for China does not arise.

“This is because the 41 items that had initially been banned from the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market will still not qualify under the deal,” he said.

The CBN recently signed a bilateral currency swap agreement with the People’s Republic of China worth about N720 billion.

On June 23, 2015, the CBN placed a ban on accessing foreign exchange in the official foreign exchange market for the importation of some goods and services.

The aim was to encourage local production of these items, conserve foreign reserves, resuscitate domestic industries and improve employment.

Some of the items banned were rice, cement, poultry, tinned fish, furniture, toothpicks, kitchen utensils, table wares, textiles, clothes, tomato pastes, soap and cosmetics.

Also banned were private jets, roofing sheets, metal boxes, wire rods, steel nails, security and razor nails, ceramic tiles, glasswares, cellophane, plastic and rubber products.

Okorafor said with the Nigeria-China currency swap deal, the Naira was expected to appreciate against the US dollars as the demand for dollars eases.

“China accounts for a quarter or more of imports into Nigeria.

“The exchange of currencies between the Nigerian Central Bank and the Chinese Central Bank will make it easier for our entrepreneurs to have direct access to foreign exchange in Renminbi.

“Before now, when importing necessary machineries or merchandise from China, you first exchange Naira for the dollar before changing it again to Renminbi and this puts pressure on the Naira.

“Now what it means is that a large portion of the demand for dollars in Nigeria has been lifted off the back of the Naira and put directly on the Chinese Renminbi.

“And so it is a positive development as it will enhance the value of the Naira and reduce our dependence on the dollar for imports,” he said.

Okorafor explained that the two central banks were still working on the exchange rates between the Naira and Renminbi.

“As we speak, the modalities, the operational manual and the guidelines are being developed.

“But I can assure you that the exchange rate will be such that it will be competitive, fair to all and will not hurt our local producers and importers,” he said.

According to Okorafor him, once everything has been fine tuned, Nigerian entrepreneurs will be able to access renminbi through money deposit banks, using similar rules for the dollar.

He, however, stated that a clearing bank would be appointed for the transaction.

He said one of requirements for the appointment was that the bank must have a branch in China, which some Nigerian banks already have.

Okorafor said one of the advantages of the deal was that it would encourage Chinese companies to set up factories in Nigeria, which would lead to industralisation and job creation.

“Chinese investors are interested in setting up shop here. And that is because if they produce here, it will be better for them.

“The cost of transportation, shipping, and all that, will be eliminated. We have a good environment, so a good number of them are interested in setting up production lines here.

“Also, when they do that, they are not going to employ only Chinese workers. A greater portion of the job opportunities in these plants will be filled up by Nigerians.

“So for us, it’s a good deal,” he said.
