$16bn On Power: You Are Ignorant – Obasanjo Replies Buhari

Featured Image

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has replied a statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari in which he said that the administration he (Obasanjo) led between 1999 and 2007 wasted $16billion on power projects without anything to show for it.

The president had while receiving a delegation of Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) at the Presidential Villa Tuesday criticised previous Nigerian administrations for “lack of imagination.”

In what appeared a direct reference to Mr. Obasanjo, the president asked “where was the power after a former president claimed to have spent $16 billion on the project?”

“You know the rail was killed and one of the former heads of state was bragging that he spent more than 15 billion American dollars on power. Where is the power? Where is the power? And now we have to pay the debts.” he asked.

However, Obasanjo who said the action of President Buhari was based on ignorance, added that he was relying on the unsubstantiated allegations against him by the then leadership of House of Representatives over the project.

The former President said this through his media aide Kehinde Akinyemi.

It read: “It has come to the attention of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo that a statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari, apparently without correct information and based on ignorance, suggested that $16 billion was wasted on power projects by “a former President”.

“We believe that the President was re-echoing the unsubstantiated allegation against Chief Obasanjo by his own predecessor but one.

“While it is doubtful that a President with proper understanding of the issue would utter such, it should be pointed out that records from the National Assembly had exculpated President Obasanjo of any wrong-doing concerning the power sector and has proved the allegations as false.

“For the records, Chief Obasanjo has addressed the issues of the power sector and the allegations against him on many occasions and platforms, including in his widely publicised book, My Watch in which he exhaustively stated the facts and reproduced various reports by both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which conducted a clinical investigation into the allegations against Chief Obasanjo, and the Ad-Hoc Committee on the Review of the Recommendations in the Report of the Committee on Power on the Investigation into how the Huge Sums Of Money was Spent on Power Generation, Transmission And Distribution between June 1999 and May 2007 without Commensurate Result.

“We recommend that the President and his co-travellers should read Chapters 41, 42, 43 and 47 of My Watch for Chief Obasanjo’s insights and perspectives on the power sector and indeed what transpired when the allegation of $16 billion on power projects was previously made. If he cannot read the three-volume book, he should detail his aides to do so and summarise the chapters in a language that he will easily understand.

“In the same statement credited to the President, it was alleged that there was some bragging by Chief Obasanjo over $16 billion spent on power. To inform the uninformed, the so-called $16 billion power expenditure was an allegation against Chief Obasanjo’s administration and not his claim.

“The President also queried where the power generated is. The answer is simple: The power is in the seven National Integrated Power Projects and eighteen gas turbines that Chief Obasanjo’s successor who originally made the allegation of $16 billion did not clear from the ports for over a year and the civil works done on the sites.

“Chief Obasanjo challenges, and in fact encourages, anybody to set up another enquiry if in doubt and unsatisfied with the EFCC report and that of the Hon. Aminu Tambuwal-led ad-hoc committee.”

Tramadol, Codeine Abuse: Reps Propose N2m Fine, 2-Year Jail-Term For Offenders

Featured Image

The House of Representatives on Tuesday, May 22, proposed a N2 million fine and a two-year jail term for corporate offenders of the ban on Tramadol and Codeine in the country.

According to the proposal, individual offenders will be liable to N500, 000 fine and two years imprisonment or both on conviction.

A Bill on it also stipulates that in the case of a corporate body, all the directors, managers, partners and trustees would be guilty of an offence and would be punished as if they had committed the offence themselves.

The Bill, sponsored by Betty Apiafi (Rivers-PDP) seeks to amend the Food, Drugs and Related Products (Registration) Act Cap. F33 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The bill also seeks to review the penalties and confer jurisdiction on High Court of the State to try offences under the Act.

Leading debate on the bill, Mrs Apiafi said “In Nigeria, between January and December, 2015, 1,044 patients were admitted for treatment in the 11 treatment centres currently part of the Nigeria Epidemiological Network of Drug Use (NENDU) reporting system.

“And, 28.3 per cent of the patients had an opiate addiction and the opiates were mainly prescription Medicines: Tramadol (71 per cent as 1st most frequently used substance and specified).

“Codeine (15.1 per cent) and Pentazocine (9.9 per cent), Heroine and Morphine represented only 3.3 per cent of the opiates declared,” she said.

She added that since 2015, Codeine had nearly overtaken Tramadol as the most abused opiate in Nigeria.

“Thousands of young people in Nigeria are addicted to Codeine cough syrup – a medicine that has become a street drug. Three million bottles are drank everyday in Nigeria’s North alone, according to a recent Nigerian government report.”

The lawmakers also explained that the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated in 2011, that 64 per cent of anti-malaria drugs in the country were found to be counterfeit.

“It is assessed that counterfeit drugs provided approximately 75 billion dollars in revenue annually to illegal operators and have caused more than 150,000 deaths worldwide,” Mrs Apiafi said.

According to her, legislators must also do their part in this war against commercialisation of illegal and unregistered food and drugs.

Sections 6, 7, 9 and 13 of the Principal Act were amended in the new bill which the lawmaker said was birthed 25 years ago and had never seen any amendment or reform till date.

The bill unanimously passed the second reading when put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.

NAN reports that the bill was referred to the Committee on Health Care Services for further action.

Nigeria 2 Atletico Madrid 3: Kelechi Nwakali And Usman Mohammed’s Beautiful Goals Steal The Show Despite Loss

Nigeria 2 Atletico Madrid 3

Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have defeated Nigeria B Team  3-2 in a friendly played on Tuesday, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

The Super Eagles B team took the lead through Kelechi Nwakali. The midfielder drove in and lashed an astonishing effort from outside the 18-yard box past Jan Oblak.

But the newly-crowned Europa League champions quickly levelled through Angel Correa.

Fernando Torres came off the bench after half-time  to head Atletico Madrid in front in the second half, before Usman Mohammed equalized for the hosts with a brilliant solo effort.

Usman Mohammed fed off fellow substitute Tosin Omoyele’s pass, skillfully – and severally turned an Atletico defender in and out, before converting to draw Nigeria level.

But Garces ensured Simeone’s men ended the tie winners after he sliced an effort past Thomas with only five minutes to go.

It Would Be ‘Damn Great’ To Win The Champions League – Cristiano Ronaldo

Featured Image

Cristiano Ronaldo said it would be “damn great” to win his fifth Champions League medal if Real Madrid beat Liverpool in Saturday’s final in Kiev, Ukraine.

Cristiano Ronaldo won his first Champions League with Manchester United in 2008, adding three more as Madrid lifted the trophy in 2014, 2016 and 2017.

“It would be an historic moment,” he told Real Madrid TV on Tuesday. “We are excited — the whole team. We do not realise completely the history we are making, and maybe that is best so people remain focused on the game.

“Later, if all goes well, we will go down in history. I am confident, feeling good, and my teammates [are] too. To win a fifth would be damn great.”

Paco Gento, a Madrid winger in the 1950s and 1960s, is the only player to have won the European Cup six times.

If Madrid beat Liverpool, Ronaldo would join a list of nine players who won the cup five times — seven of whom are fellow Madrid players from the late 1950s, among them legends Alfredo Di Stefano and Hector Rial.

“Finals are always special,” Ronaldo said. “I’d prefer if it had been Manchester United. You have to respect Liverpool a lot. I don’t believe it will be any easier. They deserve to be there. They remind me of Madrid three or four years ago. The three up front — very fast, powerful, I respect that.

“But Madrid are the best. We must be at our level while respecting the opponent.”

It looks like the Fresh Prince, Will Smith is recording the official song for the FIFA World Cup which kicks off in Russia in less than a month.

The multiple award winning Actor, Rapper and Singer posted a picture on Instagram of himself with fellow American singer and songwriter Nicky Jam, with the caption: “One Life to Live. The four are believed to have filmed the video for the World Cup track over the weekend as well. Will Smith and Nicky Jam have been spotted in Colombia and music producer DJ Nelson confirmed to music website Vibe that they would be performing the song for July’s World Cup tournament.

“Nicky Jam and Will Smith are producing the new copa de futbol, they’re doing it together. They’re making this big song and it’s just so crazy.” He said.

Although there are usually multiple songs associated with the FIFA World Cup, the official anthem is usually the most high-profile and is performed at the finale of the World Cup. For example, Shakira’s “Waka Waka” was the official theme song for the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa.

How To Save Nigeria From NNPC

How To Save Nigeria From NNPC – Feyi Fawehinmi

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Nigeria has had very many dark days. A series of unfortunate events has meant that the country has never quite managed to live up to its potential. But one particularly terrible dark day – April 1, 1977 – stands out as the biggest economic disaster that has so far befallen Nigeria since independence. That day, Nigeria’s economic future was altered negatively in such a way that the four decades since then can be counted as a lost generation.

This piece was written by Feyi Fawehinmi and was first published on Nigerian Guardian. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

On that most unfortunate Friday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was born and ever since, Nigeria and its economy have not known peace. It is not that NNPC introduced new vices into Nigeria’s political economy – no, there was already corruption and bad governance in the country. But the coming of NNPC raised all these terrible things to exponential levels and made all of them infinitely worse. From day one of its unfortunate birth, NNPC has been involved in making public money disappear – $16bn went missing between 1979 and 1983, just in case you think this is something that just started recently.

Every aspect of Nigeria’s governance and politics has been infected by the virus of this organisation. Much less known is that even the origins of the explosion of 419 crime in Nigeria can be traced to senior NNPC staff who aided and abetted the fraudsters in the 1980s. That is, NNPC has exponentially corrupted the leadership as well as the citizenry of the country. Having eaten the past, it is currently destroying the present and is all set to set fire to the country’s future.

As you read this, money is going missing at NNPC. The corporation is not really in the business of finding and selling oil – it leaves all that work to others. It simply concerns itself with new and innovative ways of making the proceeds from oil vanish – recall that $40m once disappeared in NNPC due to a ‘spreadsheet formula’. This is an organisation that never suffers the consequences of its failures – it simply shrugs its shoulders and moves on to the next disaster.

For a democracy to properly function, it needs commercial energy to be allowed to flourish. What the birth of the NNPC did in effect was to curb commercial energy in the country by concentrating power in the hands of government. And of course by concentrating so much power in one place, the job of looting the economy and abusing that power was made so much easier. So what can be done about this situation? With apologies to Jonathan Swift, I have a modest proposal.

Sell it off and give a sizeable chunk to Nigerians. Yes – the first step of this plan will be to distribute 20% of NNPC, in the form shares, to every adult Nigerian who meets a minimum criteria like having a BVN or a Tax Identification Number (TIN) or both. A deadline for this can be set say 6 months in advance. Once the deadline has passed, the number of Nigerians who met the deadline to register will be counted and then 20% of the godforsaken NNPC’s value will be divided into shares and distributed to them. Another condition of the shares is that they will have a 10-year lockup period – that is, you will not be able to sell them in that period but you will receive dividends. After 10 years, you will be allowed to sell 10% of your shares every 2 years. However, you will be allowed to nominate a member of your family who will receive your shares in the event that you die before the end of the 10-year lockup period.

Once this first part of Nigeria’s emancipation from NNPC has been sorted, the next step will be to completely privatise the remaining 80% of it. This will be done by listing the shares in a foreign stock exchange like New York, London or Singapore as well as Nigeria. The shares given to Nigerians, as well as the dividends from them, can even be denominated in US dollars guaranteeing all those Nigerians some level of US dollar income for 10 years. Let ordinary Nigerians too earn some dollars for a change.

How about the government? It simply faces its work as a tax collector. It will collect taxes on NNPC’s income – NNPC will finally start making money once it’s owned by private investors and foreign ones for that matter. Just watch. Government will also collect dividend taxes on the dividends paid to Nigerians as well as capital gains tax when they start selling their shares. Once all this is done, the day when NNPC is finally removed from the government’s hands can be declared as Freedom Day and made a public holiday. And Nigeria can begin the long journey towards becoming a normal and fast growing economy. And that was when I woke up from my dream.

This piece was written by Feyi Fawehinmi and was first published on Nigerian Guardian. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Nigeria Unveils N64 Million Website

Featured Image

The Nigerian government has inaugurated its upgraded website, which cost about N64 million, to encourage e-participation and bring governance closer to Nigerians.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, during the launch of the website, on Monday in Abuja, said the idea of the website was in line with the government’s policy of encouraging transparency in all its dealings.

NAN reports that the SGF explained that the launch was in line with the civil service reforms strategy, which calls for greater openness, transparency, and public responsiveness in government agencies in their delivery on policies and programmes.

According to him, Nigerians now have the opportunity of interrogating the policies of the government, as they have the right to be critical of government’s policies.

Mr Mustapha said that Nigerians could now request for information from the government, submit any idea, lodge complaints and ”the government would respond in 72 hours”.

He also disclosed that the website costs about N64 million, which include the design, procurement of servers, training, provision of consultancy services, among others.

“E-Participation allows you to play an integral role in government services – from submitting an idea you have to government, requesting for information from government, making a complaint to the government, routing neighborhood issues to the right official; and then receiving a response.

“Arrangements have been concluded to train people to manage the website.

”Governance is being drawn closer to the people in line with the freedom of information act.

“The office will not hesitate to publish any material, all in a bid to have an open government.

“We have created a forum for e-participation. We will make sure the website is current so that people can interrogate government,” he said.

“The award of the contract for the website followed the pre-requisites of the Public Procurement Act 2007, before it was awarded on October 17, 2017, “he added.

’15 Agencies Failed To Remit N8.1trn Under Jonathan’

Featured Image

The Federal government on Monday said about 15 revenue agencies failed to remit N8.1 trillion to the federation account between 2010 and 2015 – a period of time when former President Goodluck Jonathan was in charge of the country.

This disclosure was made known the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, and was issued by his spokesperson, Segun Adeyemi.

Adeyemi quoted the minister as stating this in Osogbo, Osun State, while commissioning phases one and two of the channelization, de-silting, flood control and development of Okoko and Ogbagba rivers, on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Recently, the Federal Government ordered an audit (between 2010 and 2015) of 15 government revenue generating agencies. The result was the discovery that the agencies had not remitted over 8.1 trillion Naira to the Federation Account. This amount is about six times the N1.34 trillion stolen between 2006 and 2015.

”It is also the equivalent, on the average, of the country’s yearly national budget! Imagine, for a moment, how many kilometres of roads could have been constructed, how many kilometres of rail tracks that could have been laid, and how many modern hospitals and schools that could have been built if that money had been properly accounted for,” Mr Mohammed was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, the minister said the projects executed by the present administration across the country could have long been completed but “for the mind-boggling looting of the treasury by previous administrations.

“This is why we will not stop talking about those who have looted the public treasury, despite the push back from their apologists. If we do not stop the looting of the treasury, there will be no money for the kind of projects we are commissioning here in Osogbo today.

”I have no doubt in my mind that the successful completion of these projects would enhance the holistic solutions to soil erosion and flood menace in Osogbo town.

“This would at the same time reduce the danger to lives and property associated with erosion and persistent flooding that has been experienced here in the recent time.”

West Ham United Appoint Manuel Pellegrini As New Manager

Featured Image

West Ham have appointed Manuel Pellegrini as their next manager, replacing David Moyes on a three-year deal.

Most recently the coach of Hebei China Fortune in the Chinese Super League, Pellegrini, 64, parted company with the club last week, before the league’s two-month break for the World Cup, in order to pursue other opportunities.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester City manager moved to the top of West Ham’s shortlist after it became clear Rafa Benitez would not leave Newcastle United this summer.

David Sullivan expressed his desire to bring in a manager with experience and he will hope Pellegrini that brings the stability which has been lacking in recent seasons.

West Ham statement

‘I am delighted to welcome Manuel Pellegrini to West Ham United. He is one of the world’s most respected football coaches and we look forward to working with him,’ joint-chairman David Sullivan said.

‘It was important that we appointed someone with knowledge and experience of the Premier League, who already has an understanding – not only of the teams and players we face – but of West Ham United and our ambitions.

‘Manuel brings a reputation for attacking football and getting the best out of his players. We believe he will attract new talent to the London Stadium as well as improving the current squad.

‘Above all, he is a winner, who knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level and is driven to continue that success. Manuel is the first West Ham United manager to have a Premier League title on his CV, and we believe that his experience, quality and proven record of taking teams forward quickly will ensure that he is successful here.

‘We have listened to fans who asked us to be ambitious. We hope they agree it is an exciting appointment.

‘Manuel will shortly announce the names of the new staff he will bring in and he will then get down to shaping the squad he wants. We all wish him the very best of luck.’

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Given First-half Red Card In LA Galaxy Win Vs Montreal Impact

Featured Image

Zlatan Ibrahimovic received a red card for slapping an opponent in the head but  LA Galaxy were still able to grind out a 1-0 win over the Montreal Impact without their marquee acquisition.

Montreal Impact defender Michael Petrasso stepped on the 36-year-old’s foot in the 40th minute of the match in Montreal and the towering Swede retaliated with a slap to the back of Petrasso’s head.

Both players fell to the ground in an apparent effort to win the sympathy of referee Ismail Elfath but after a review of the video, Petrasso was shown a yellow card and the former Juventus, Barcelona and Manchester United striker a red.

Despite the Impact controlling the ball for 56% of the game and taking 15 more shots, Galaxy’s 10 men prevailed when Ola Kamara scored the only goal of the game in the 75th minute.

Ibrahimovic made a Hollywood entrance during his first game for the Galaxy in March when he scored twice, including the winner, in a thrilling 4-3 victory over local rivals LAFC but has added only one more goal since.

ICYMI: Unai Emery Set To Be Named As New Arsenal Manager

Featured Image

Arsenal are close to appointing Unai Emery as the successor to Arsène Wenger.

The club have conducted a thorough recruitment process as they look to replace Wenger – their manager of almost 22 years – who departed at the end of the season and Mikel Arteta had been considered as the favourite for the past week or so.

However, the signs on Monday were that Emery, the former Paris St-Germain and Sevilla manager, was set to be chosen. The club have spoken to him and a decision is expected to be confirmed later in the week.

Former Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta, who spent six years at the club before retiring and joining Manchester City’s coaching staff, was thought to be the frontrunner.

Unai Emery is a safer bet in terms of his experience and, in the end, it is this factor that has swayed the decision of Ivan Gazidis, the Arsenal chief executive, who has led the recruitment drive

Emery has gone on to take charge at Almería, Valencia, Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and, most recently, PSG – clubs of mounting profile – and he has impressed Gazidis, even though he is not fluent in English.
