Watford want to retain the services of on-loan Barcelona winger Gerard Deulofeu, reports Mundo Deportivo.

The Hornets snapped up Deulofeu on loan during the January transfer window and he is set to return to his parent club.

However, they want to keep hold of him and will meet his representatives in the next few days to inform them of their intention to submit a bid to Barcelona.

They also want to confirm that the player is open to the move and find out if he has received offers from elsewhere.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the wideman has told Watford boss Javi Gracia that he is happy to stay at Vicarage Road.

Bournemouth Defender Rhoys Wiggins Forced To Retire Due To Knee Injury

Featured Image

Bournemouth defender Rhoys Wiggins has been forced to retire due to a serious knee problem suffered more than 18 months ago.

The 30-year-old, who was on loan at Birmingham at the time of the injury in October 2016, has undergone a series of operations but been unable to make a full recovery.

“This isn’t something I ever thought I would have to write at the age of 30, but due to the injury I sustained I am unfortunately not able to continue with the job I love to do,” Wiggins wrote in an open letter to fans.

“I have been battling for the last two years, doing everything possible to get back out there, but my knee just won’t allow me to do so.”

“I feel I have done everything possible to give myself the best chance of a return to the pitch and, for that, I can hold my head high.

“It’s not been easy since the injury. I’ve had three operations, along with countless injections and drainages of the knee.

“A lot of people are also unaware that I had an accident after my first operation and sustained a fractured skull.

“This was, and has been, the most challenging time of my life.

“I have not only had to deal with the injury, operations and the other freak accident, but I have also found out at the end of a lot of hard work from everyone involved that it was not meant to be, and I would have to give up on my dream once and for all.

“I’m absolutely gutted on a number of levels. I feel that with previous injures throughout my career I never got to show my true potential, and never quite reached the level I felt was possible for me to achieve.

“This is the worst thing about having to retire early – that I will never get the chance to prove what I believed all along.

“Having said that, I have to keep my head high. I still made it and in doing so proved a lot of people wrong along the way.

“I have enjoyed many years playing football and been involved in some great teams with some great people. I have made history and memories that I will be proud to tell my daughter.”

Despite being unable to take to the field in his most recent spell with Cherries, Wiggins also took the time to acknowledge the club for their continued support.

He added: “I have to thank AFC Bournemouth and the fans for everything. I have received nothing but the best possible care from everyone from the first day I returned, to the day I called it quits.

“It is a team not just on the pitch but throughout, and that runs from every member of staff through to each player.

Rhoys Wiggins also played for Crystal Palace, Norwich City and Sheffield Wednesday.

The 54-year-old has been appointed to lead the club into the new season and beyond, while his assistant Mark Bowen and coach Eddie Niedzwiecki have also signed long-term contracts.

Eric Many Slams Fresh N267m Lawsuit On Runtown

Featured Image

The on-going legal battle between Eric Many Records and its signed act, Runtown, has assumed a different dimension as the former has said that it has filed a fresh lawsuit against the latter due to the monies owed.

According to a statement issued on Friday, May 25, by the label’s general manager, Johnson Adumike, the initial injunction filed against Runtown was only for the “unapproved collaboration” he took part in.

The statement read: “As you are aware, lately we have been in court with Runtown over copyrights issues with regards to two collabo videos he made without our prior approval.”

“Truly, the much-publicized legal action at the Federal High Court in Lagos was, contrary to what many believe, not on the entire contract we signed with Runtown. It was only on the unapproved collabo videos and we claimed general damages of about N65 Million for the copyright infringement.”

The label’s GM further said that the singer is not free from Eric Many as he has led the public to believe, adding that the name ‘Runtown’ belongs to the label as it has been licensed to Eric Many.

“We had thought that Runtown would see reason to retrace his steps on our contract following the ‘warning case’ on copyright infringement,” the statement read.

“This was not to be as he took to the social media, especially Twitter, dishing out insults on our Chairman, Prince Okwudili Umenyiora, boasting that he was no longer with Eric Many.

“His elder brother joined on Instagram boasting that his company ‘JSparrowMedia’ is now the person booking Runtown’s shows and no longer Eric Many.

“Under our contract, the professional name ‘Runtown’ and other names are licensed to Eric Many. Yet Runtown went to Trademarks Registry in Abuja and has been working to take the names from us.

“These and many other issues thrown up by the copyrights suit confirmed to us that indeed Runtown had walked out on us. We therefore decided to sue him for comprehensive breach of contract, to the sum of N266,694,755.”

“While our contract is supposed to fall due for expiration on 22nd June 2018, Eric Many now has an outstanding balance of about N266,694,755.08 to recoup on our investment and expenses on Runtown’s career.

“He is also yet to deliver an album which the contract requires him to deliver to us during the contract period.

“The contract spells out the procedure for the production of the album. Runtown is yet to initiate the procedure, whilst he focuses on Abuja Trademarks Registry scheming on how to make us lose grip of his professional name.”

Eric Many said it has withdrawn the case against Runtown at the federal high court, Lagos, following the advice of its legal team.

It said: “Last Wednesday, 23rd May 2018, following the advice of our lawyers, we withdrew our case at the federal high court on the collabos to have more time and focus to pursue the case of breach of contract.”

“Our lawyers had advised that since the breach of contract and recovery of our outstanding sum of N266,694,755.08 is a bigger picture, it would be more reasonable to drop the copyright case and focus our energy on the contract case.

“We accepted this advice and gave a go-ahead for the Lagos case to be withdrawn.”

Meanwhile, Runtown is yet to respond to the fresh lawsuit.

UEFA Will Be Very Tough On Clubs Who Breach Financial Fair Play – Aleksander Ceferin

Featured Image

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin says he has faith in the Financial Fair Play (FFP) process, which he believes treats every club the same.

In August, Ceferin said his organisation would not be a “tiger without teeth” when it came to clubs who breach FFP regulations, the set of rules that link club spending to revenues over a three-year period.

“I completely trust the division of UEFA that is taking care of it and I trust our independent bodies,” Ceferin told ESPN on Friday. “We don’t divide clubs into big ones and small ones, but rather into those who respect the rules and those who do not.”

Among those clubs thought to be at risk of falling foul of FFP were traditional European giants like Milan, whose net spend exceeded $150 million under new ownership last summer and Paris Saint-Germain, who committed more than $400m to the signings of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

On Tuesday, UEFA announced that Milan were referred to the adjudicatory branch of UEFA’s Club Financial Control Board (CFCB). It is the first time a club from one of Europe’s major five leagues was referred to the CFCB.

In the past, clubs who have been sanctioned, including Manchester City, Roma and Inter, were given the opportunity to reach a “settlement agreement,” effectively a plea bargain with reduced punishments. A decision is expected by the middle of next month. As for PSG, it is likely that CFCB will wait until after the end of the club’s financial year — June 30 — to assess the situation.

Ceferin added that there was a range of sanctions available — up to and including exclusion from all European competition — but that each case would be judged on its individual merits.

“We’re not going to be populists and punish someone just because people say we’re afraid to do it,” he said. “We will not kick out all the big ones just to show that we are strong.”

He reiterated that decisions were not up to him, but he would back whatever outcome.

“Me personally, I don’t decide,” he said. “But I don’t run away from responsibility. The relevant bodies decide, but we shape the politics of European football. I trust them, I don’t interfere and they will do what they have to do, according to the rules.”

Mohamed Salah’s Long-term Potential Not Important – Jurgen Klopp

Featured Image

Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted that it is “not important” whether Mohamed Salah will one day eclipse Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the world’s best player.

Mohamed Salah has matched Real Madrid ace Ronaldo for goals in all competitions this season, finding the net 44 times in a memorable debut campaign at Anfield.

Salah has been tipped to break Ronaldo and Messi’s stronghold on the Ballon d’Or award, with victory in the Champions League final against Real Madrid going a long way to helping him achieve that dream.

Speaking on the eve of that huge clash with Madrid in Kiev, though, Klopp was reluctant to get tied down about what his star man can achieve in the long term.

“That’s not important,” he told reporters on the comparisons with Ronaldo and Messi. “No manager is interested in that. Messi and Ronaldo deserve their praise and all the things they’ve won. For years they were on that level and now are 30-something but still on that level.

“If Mo can do that, we will see. He has fantastic potential. There is one more game to go but the season was outstanding. The next few seasons will show if he can do something similar.”

Michy Batshuayi To Wait Until After World Cup Before Deciding His Future

Featured Image

Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi has said that he is happy to wait until after the World Cup to find out whether his future lies at the club or Borussia Dortmund.

Michy Batshuayi, 24, was sent on loan to Dortmund for the second half of the season, and scored nine goals in 14 matches before suffering an ankle injury in a game against Schalke in April.

The former Marseille player has recovered in time for the World Cup, but still does not know where he will be playing his club football next season.

“There’s already been contact — some phone calls — but I’m not aware of all that,” he told a news conference while on international duty with Belgium.

“It’s up to them to talk, and afterwards there’ll be a decision. But I can’t respond right now because I have the World Cup first.”

When pressed on where he would like to play, he stressed that both Chelsea and Dortmund are great clubs but said that he would rather not indicate a preference at the moment.

“The World Cup is a big event, but I’m not thinking too much about afterwards,” he said.

“I’m thinking about preparing for the friendly matches that are coming up and the World Cup. For me afterwards is really too far away, so I’m not thinking about it at all.”

Barcelona Won’t Be Able To Bring in Arthur Before December – Gremio President Romildo Bolzan

Featured Image

Gremio president Romildo Bolzan has rejected claims that Brazilian midfielder Arthur will be allowed to join Barcelona before December.

Barcelona reached an agreement with the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A side earlier this year over a price for Arthur, which could rise to around £35m.

Following Andres Iniesta‘s departure this week, Barcelona chief Josep Maria Bartomeu hinted that the Catalan giants would hand over the agreed sum and bring the 21-year-old to Camp Nou this summer.

Bolzan insists that Arthur is staying put until the end of the Brazilian football season, though, unless his contract is bought out in full.

“There’s no chance that Arthur leaves the club in the coming months because it’s already written down,” he told Sport.

“There’s a contract signed and that is not a possibility. Barcelona have never brought to the table any interest in signing Arthur halfway through the [Brazilian] season.

“The only right that Barca have is an option to buy him, in which case they must do the transaction before July 15.”

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said earlier this this week that his club would act on the 21-year-old when the coaching staff found it appropriate.

“He’s a footballer for whom we have a purchase option and, when the coaches believe he should come, we will execute this option,” Bartomeu said.

Liverpool Owner John W Henry Hails Jurgen Klopp’s ‘Tremendous Job’ At The Club

Featured Image

Liverpool owner John W Henry has heaped praise on “natural leader” Jurgen Klopp for guiding the club into the UEFA Champions League final.

Liverppol have defied expectations to make it all the way to the fianl, where they will take on the competition’s most successful side in Real Madrid.

John W Henry has lifted the lid on Liverpool’s decision to appoint Klopp as Brendan Rodgers‘s successor in October 2015, three years after initially approaching him, and says that winning the world’s top club prize would be a deserved reward for the German coach.

“It took [sporting director] Michael Edwards winning more and more of the battles internally to get us to the point when we met with Jurgen,” the Daily Mail quotes him as saying. “[Klopp] said: ‘I really want to coach this group this will be fun.’

“He has done a tremendous job getting us into this position. He has been just as effective in inspiring not just our players but everyone who loves this club. He is an inspired, natural leader who is sensitive to what some might see as small things but are very important over the long term.

“Being in the final is a reflection of the incredible support this club gets at Anfield and the ability of Jurgen and the entire staff to put our players in the position to be successful. You can do all of that but the players have to step up and they have.”

Obasanjo’s Roadshow And Buhari’s Forgotten Task

Obasanjo’s Roadshow And Buhari’s Forgotten Task, By Azu Ishiekwene

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

After weeks of shadow-boxing, the gloves are finally off between President Muhammadu Buhari and former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

This piece was written by Azu Ishiekwene. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Obasanjo’s roadshow to drum up support against Buhari’s second term got under his skin. The president, who only weeks ago praised his minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, for his cool and calculated response to the former president, lost his cool and returned fire for fire.

That’s dramatised, really. It wasn’t exactly fire-for-fire. Buhari’s response this week to Obasanjo’s tantrums was false, impotent anger. It was a window on how the public is held in contempt by its leaders, especially politicians.

For years now there has been public outcry that the billions of naira poured into the power sector under the Obasanjo administration only produced more darkness and misery. Buhari was listening but he wasn’t hearing.

In the past, when he was under pressure to respond to the wasted billions, Obasanjo said it was not $16 billion but $3 billion that his administration spent in a blueprint that was also supposed to integrate independent power producers and double power generation, which was around 2,000 megawatts at the time.

He said that he met things in a terribly bad state and that no investment had been made in infrastructure since he left office over two decades earlier.

He claimed that he did his best to rebuild the sector and blamed his successors, particularly late President Umaru Yar’Adua, for neglecting the energy blueprint and slowing down gains which could have been made.

Again, Buhari was listening but he wasn’t hearing.

Like the typical Nigerian story, there was not one credible, coherent version; not even two or three. Investigations by the House of Representatives, Senate and other bodies have produced different accounts, which suggest that contrary to what Obasanjo claimed, sums ranging from $13 billion to $16 billion – apparently more than $3 billion – were spent by his government with little or nothing to show for it.

In fact one report said that between Obasanjo, Yar’Adua and Jonathan, government spent N2.74 trillion on power.

When Buhari took office three years ago and decided to prioritise the fight against corruption, not one of these versions was unfamiliar to him.

Whether $3 billion, $13 billion or $16 billion, Buhari knew that billions of dollars had been spent to provide electricity and yet there’s hardly enough supply to power a 60-watt light bulb consistently.

He knew that this nonsense happened largely on Obasanjo’s watch and yet for reasons best known to him, he chose to look the other way, while laying out the red carpet to receive Obasanjo at least five times in Aso Rock within his first one and a half years as president.

As long as Obasanjo was saying what he wanted to hear about his government, Buhari was happy to look the other way.

And suddenly, three years down the line, because Obasanjo is opposed to his having a second term, Buhari is upset; very, very upset, and is forced to conveniently remember that Obasanjo may have misused public funds. But he is not even upset enough to mention Obasanjo by name. He simply described him as “one former head of state”.

He let the press put the name in his mouth. That is how upset Buhari was – enough to get an applause in the room but not enough to say what he plans to do after waiting three years of indulging a scandal.

When rolling power cuts threatened to disrupt South Africa, Eskom, the largely state-owned power company, launched the Medupi power station project. Medupi, a coal-fired power generator, comprises six 794-megawatt units. It is the fourth largest coal-powered plant in the southern hemisphere and the largest of its kind with direct dry cooling operation in the world.

That project, which started in 2007 and will be completed in the next two years, has led to the hiring of nearly 20,000 staff. It would cost R145 billion (about $12 billion) at completion and would deliver 4,764 megawatts. Compare this to nearly $30 billion spent on power in Nigeria in 16 years and Obasanjo’s admonition that we should, to paraphrase Femi Falana, connect to pages 41-47 of his book, My Watch, to power our appliances.

Yet, cost is one thing; and the viability of the model on which the billions have been spent in a potentially energy diverse country like Nigeria is another kettle of fish.

Whether it was $3 billion, $13 billion or $16 billion, Nigeria hardly added up to 1,500 megawatts to its generation capacity; yet it has taken Buhari three years and a dissenting view about his interest in a second term to rouse his outrage.

He said it wasn’t impotent outrage, as such. That unlike his former life as a military head of state when shooting before aiming was his pastime, the system now makes it incredibly frustrating to tackle crime suspects.

There are certainly more than half a dozen examples of democracies around the world from where he could take a leaf, if he is genuinely interested. For a start, he could ask his older cousin, Mahathir bin Mohamad, how he’s managing to tackle former Malaysian prime minister, Najib Razak, who left office nearly richer than his country.

And why is it incredibly frustrating to find a way to tackle the Obasanjos of Nigeria, the Mainas and the murderous herdsmen, but not so the El-Zakzakys and the Dasukis?

Whatever happens next, Obasanjo does not appear to care. And he knows that Buhari’s impotent outrage cannot hold him to account.

To achieve his goal of stopping Buhari’s second term bid, Obasanjo has turned to the second chapter of his anarchist cookbook, the same manual from which he joined forces with the bandwagon to frustrate Goodluck Jonathan’s attempt for a second term.

This time though, Obasanjo is going the extra mile.

He’s not stopping at a public letter bomb in which he rated Buhari’s performance below average. He’s not even stopping at forming a movement, even though he had said at some point that he would wash his hands off once the movement becomes a political party. The world’s busiest retired president is on a roadshow rallying old friends and foes alike against his former godson.

Some have urged that we should ignore the messenger and accept the message.

Is it not true that more Nigerians are poorer, in relative terms today, than they were when Buhari came to office? Is it not true, even by the government’s own statistics, that an average of two million people have lost their jobs every year for the last three years under Buhari?

Is it not true that Nigeria is more divided today than it has been at any time in the recent past? And is it not true, as Obasanjo has alleged, that Buhari’s narrow-mindedness makes nepotism look like a virtue?

It’s true, all very true. Except that it’s just as true, also, that Obasanjo is both message and messenger: you can’t take the one and leave the other.

We take his message that Buhari’s government has under-performed but we also remind this messenger who knows where the dead bodies of the unrealised power projects are buried that even though Buhari may have chosen to turn a blind eye, he, Obasanjo, would yet pay his debt to justice someday, somehow.

2019: Osinbajo’s VP Position Is “Under Threat” – Buhari

Featured Image

With just months to the 2019 general elections, President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the position of Vice President Yemu Osinbajo is threatened.

Daily Trust reports that the president stated this at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday while hosting a delegation of the Conference of Nigerian Female Parliamentarians.

While the president has indicated his interest to seek reelection in 2019, it is not yet officially confirmed whether he will run with his Vice.

But while responding to the demand of the group for a female vice president of the country, Buhari jocularly said:

“It is a pity the VP is not here, but I believe the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will brief him that his position is threatened.”

The president also stated: “It is only the vice president who is threatened. And if we win the next election, he may lose his election.”

The President also urged the delegation to disabuse the minds of other female politicians from their belief that men are aggressive.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Thursday, May 24, injected additional $100 million into the foreign exchange (Forex) market, barely a day after the apex bank had made available $210 million on Wednesday.

In a statement it issued with respect to the latest injection, the CBN said the money was injected to cater for the personal needs of Nigerians who may want to travel to fulfill personal obligations, particularly for pilgrimage, Premium Times reports.

According to the bank, the move was to safeguard the interest of customers seeking to purchase foreign exchange for personal obligations and checkmate any attempt at causing panic in the market.

$210 million was allocated to the wholesale segment of the market on Wednesday to take care of the the spike in the seasonal demand for foreign exchange to meet various personal obligations.

The statement said the CBN plans to inject more dollars into the market in the coming days, to checkmate any attempt to trigger artificial scarcity.

The CBN spokesperson, Isaac Okorafor, said the decision to inject fresh funds became necessary to protect customers from the activities of speculators who might want to capitalise on the increase in demand for foreign exchange at this time to make brisk gains.

Noting that the CBN had sufficient foreign exchange to meet genuine needs, Mr Okorafor cautioned dealers against speculation.

He warned that they stood to lose much if they chose to hoard currencies in anticipation of a spike and a depreciation in the value of the Naira.

JAMB: Reps Ask FG To Reduce UMTE Fee To N3000

Featured Image

The House of Representatives has urged the federal ministry of education to slash the cost of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) application form – which is currently being sold at N7,500.

The call was sequel to a motion introduced during plenary on Thursday by James Faleke, a lawmaker from Lagos.

The lawmaker is calling for a downward review of the current examination fees from N7,500 to N3,000 with the view to making university and other tertiary education accessible and affordable for Nigerians, Daily Post reports.

Faleke said by remitting N7.8 billion to the federal government as proceeds from sales of Unified Tertiary Examinations (UTME) application forms in 2017, JAMB has become a “revenue generating agency”.

He said the N7.8 billion excludes revenue from the sale of ‘change of course’ and ‘change of university’ forms “at the rate of N5,000 each”.

He said: “An estimated 250,000 candidates purchase the UTME forms, bringing the income from sales of the forms to an estimated sum of N2.4 billion per year.

“The House notes that the cost does not include the Post UMTE Examinations that are conducted by universities at an average cost of N2, 500 per candidate, excluding the expenses made on logistics.

“The House is aware that the Board had a surplus of N7 billion budget in 2017, meaning that the sum under consideration is from sales of forms only, making the Board a profit making venture to the detriment of the educational and social development of the country.

“The House is also aware that the increase in the number of universities from 12 at inception of JAMB in 1798, with less than 50,000 candidates to over 400 tertiary Institutions with more than 1.7 million candidates writing the exams and indices shows only about 50% of those who wrote the examinations were admitted in the universities as at 2017.

“The House is further aware that JAMB, as a government agency, is not set up for profit making but to promote educational development of the young citizens in pursuit of their professional careers.

“The House is alarmed at the allegation of  the huge sum of money missing from the vaults, burning of scratch cards, lending out money made from sales of application forms, conversion of proceeds from sales of application forms to loans and image ’empowerment’ funds to private individuals and fictitious by stories by the officials of the board.

“The House recognises that being the first time such an amount is being  returned to government coffers by any government agency, the management of JAMB deserves commendation for upholding the Federal Government’s anti-corruption policies.”

TheCable reports that a lawmaker from Benue state, Hassan Saleh, supported Faleke’s stance, saying he spends a “huge” sum of money to buy JAMB forms for students in his constituency yearly.

However, a Kwara state lawmaker, Zakari Mohammed, cautioned his colleagues on fixing a specific fee for JAMB to charge without knowing the exact administrative cost for organising the examination.

The motion was thereafter unanimously adopted and referred to the Committee on Basic Education led by Hon. Zakari Mohammed (APC, Kwara) to ensure compliance and report back in two weeks for further legislative action.

Innoson Motors’ Chairman Declared Wanted For Alleged Forgery

Featured Image

The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja on Thursday declared the Chairman of Innoson Motors Nig Ltd, Innocent Chukwuma, wanted following his continuous refusal to attend court proceedings for his alleged fraud trial.

Justice Mojisola Dada issued the bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for his arraignment for the fifth time following an application to that effect by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

While the anti-graft agency had charged the businessman and his firm with alleged forgery and stealing, he has however repeatedly failed to show up in court for his arraignment.

Apart from filing an application challenging the court’s jurisdiction to try him, Chukwuma, through his legal team, also submitted a petition to the National Judicial Council accusing the trial judge, Justice Dada, of bias.

At the Thursday proceedings, counsel for the EFCC, Mr. Anselem Ozioko, decried Chukwuma’s repeated absence from court.

He prayed the court to declare the businessman wanted, contending that he was not too big to submit himself to the court.

“This appears to be the fifth time this matter is coming up before Your Lordship for arraignment.

“The learned Senior Advocate of Nigeria representing the second defendant (Innoson) is still insisting on taking his application without ensuring the defendant is physically present in court.

“The question is: where is the second defendant? Is he too big for the court? Is he too big for the Federal Republic of Nigeria? Is he too big because he has money? Where is he?

“What my learned friends, the defence counsel, are doing is contemptuous.

“We shall be applying for an order to declare the second defendant wanted,” Ozioko said.

In a short ruling, Justice Dada granted the prayer, holding that, “The second defendant is hereby declared wanted and the case adjourned until June 22 for possible arraignment.”
