Celebrating Lagos at 51 – Akinwunmi Ambode

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Exactly a year ago, Lagos State turned 50. Nigerians came out in larger numbers to participate in the one-year long celebration of the coming of age of the State of aquatic splendor. The celebrations culminated in a spectacular show on 27 May, 2017 at the grounds of Eko Atlantic.

It has been one year now since those celebrations took place. We look back today, one year after, and see a Lagos that is remarkably different at 51. Infrastructure development continues to be in the front burner of our administration. From Abule Egba to Ajah, from Epe to Badagry; Lagos resounds with an endless run of repaired and newly constructed roads and bridges. From Alapere to Okokomaiko, Agege to TBS, the city breathes with lay-bys that have drastically whittled hours spent in agonizing traffic jams across the State. From Agege to Yaba, Ojodu Berger to Lekki, Lagos stares with shimmering streetlights that adorn the most populous black city in the world with glee.

The pace of development in Lagos State since last year, and indeed since we came on board, is modestly noticeable.

Yet during our campaign, our resonant message was that Lagos must work for all. We said it then and has continued to reiterate it since assuming powers that ours would be government of inclusion; where every hard working Nigerian would have a place to call home. Our message of hope knows no difference between federal and state roads: for the reclusive child of fate there are no federal or State Lagosians. All roads in Lagos, as with all other infrastructure, belong to the people.

Through the years, we have steadily repaired our State, modernizing and retooling things to the point where we now talk about turning Lagos into a Smart City.

In every way, our infrastructure is improved.  Our roads are better, our mass transportation has expanded, hospitals give better care to the sick and afflicted, education is improving and more affordable housing is being constructed before our very eyes.

The face of Badagry is changing. The makeover of Oshodi will cause you to marvel at the transformation that can take place even in densely populated urban space when there is the political will and determined creativity to give the people the infrastructure they deserve. We are improving and expanding the Airport Road so that a trip to and from the airport no longer takes more time than your flight itself.

The Lekki-Epe axis was once an isolated, inactive tract of land. Now it bustles with energy, activity and prosperity due in large measure to the roads and other infrastructure our State has constructed.

We have and will continue to build bridges linking parts of Lagos that have not been linked before so that commerce, transport and communication among Lagosians will be facilitated. We aim to make this state fully integrated so that one part is well connected to any other.

All of this work is underpinned by the belief that Lagos belongs to all of us. Lagos is not an exclusive club. It is an inclusive family.

Available statistics from the United Nations confirmed the fact that an average of 86 people enter into Lagos every one hour which is the highest in the world, while the population of the State was now around 24million, with attendant impact on infrastructure and other social amenities. And the significance of Lagos to the overall economy of Nigeria itself is not what anyone would want to toy with. There is therefore the need for a pragmatic approach by a visionary government to put machinery in place to tackle the future challenges. That is what our government has been doing in the last three years and the desire destination in the nearest future is to make Lagos the third largest economy in Africa.

As a government, we are conscious of the fact that infrastructure, security, stability and partnership with all stakeholders are fundamental ingredients for tourism development. We have channeled a lot of resources into creating an enduring infrastructural architecture for the business of tourism to thrive.

In order to do this successfully, we must first build a solid infrastructural architecture that will endure. It must be safe and secure; it must provide functional and diverse venues for the arts, culture, festivals, creative industry, recreation and wildlife; and it must constantly and productively engage with its critical stakeholders.

The Tourism Master Plan is focused on Six  key sectors; Culture and Heritage, Film, Art and Entertainment, Business Tourism, Nature and Adventure, Medical and Wellness, Beach and Leisure.

Qualitative education is one of the cardinal duties a government must render to its people and the importance our government attaches to education is reflected in the 12.07% of the total 2018 Budget allocated to Education.

This allocation is surpassed by only that of Economic Affairs and General Public Services. Our State has always been a trailblazer in various spheres of life and in order to consolidate on the economic gains made so far, the education of our youth is paramount. We seek the cooperation of all Lagosians to ensure we eradicate illiteracy in the State, groom the next generation of leaders and captains of industry as well as position our State as the standard bearer for the nation in the provision of qualitative tertiary education.

On security, we believe that the continued prosperity of our State can only be achieved under a well-secured and peaceful environment, hence our strong financial investment on security architecture, modern equipment, vehicles and welfare to enhance the fighting capacities of our security agencies.

We have inspired Lagosians to pay taxes. In truth, Nigerians do not like paying taxes, not because they are naturally averse to taxes, but because they have been taken for a ride for too long. We have demonstrated our readiness to judiciously and efficiently manage the state resources for the benefit of the generality of our people. The positive response of our people has shown that when a government wins the confidence of her people, they will respond with decisive performance of their civil obligations. This is the essence of the social contract we made with Lagosians when we resumed on 29 May, 2015.

The social contract of inclusive governance and purposeful leadership is what we are renewing with our people today that Lagos is 51; and in this month that our governance of Lagos clocks three years. We wish to assure Lagosians that our government is one that listens. Our administration does not play the Ostrich that buries its head in the sand. Ours is a responsive government that promises and delivers on inclusiveness. Yes, it’s not a perfect state because we believe there will always be challenges, but with God and all our citizens on our side we would always triumph.

I will readily admit that I am not infallible and it is an evident truism that I exhibit a different DNA and leadership style which some might not be alienable to, but we have kept faith with our cardinal principles by consistently delivering the goods/services and making our people happy. The future of Lagos State is bright and secured.

Happy Anniversary!!!

Ambode is the governor of Lagos state

JOHESU: Saraki To Meet Again With Striking Health Workers On Monday

Featured Image

In an attempt to resolve the dispute between the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and the Federal Government, which has led to an industrial action, the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has set aside Monday, May 28, to meet with the leadership of the health workers’ union.

A statement issued on Sunday by the Media Office of the President of the Senate said the meeting would hold in Saraki’s office at 3pm.

The senate president had last week begun his mediation between the government and JOHESU over the ongoing strike action by the workers, which has crippled Nigeria’s public health care facilities for the past 40 days.

Saraki had held a meeting with JOHESU’s leadership on Thursday afternoon; and later on Friday morning with the Minister of Labour, Productivity and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige and Minister of Health, Prof. Issac Adewole.

The statement said since the discussions initiated by Saraki, it was believed that the government had improved on its offers to the striking health workers.

It read, “If it is true that government has improved on its offers to JOHESU, it will be desirable for the health workers to also stretch out a hand of fellowship — in good faith — to meet the government mid-way and accept the offer, so that we can finally resolve this matter and have a win-win situation for the union, the government and the Nigerian people who make use of our public health institutions.”

JAMB Prepares To Conduct Recruitment Test For FRSC

Featured Image

A few days after it conducted a test for applicants seeking recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is set to conduct a similar test for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos.

Benjamin said that the patronage by FRSC resulted from the success the board recorded in the recent conduct of recruitment test for the Police.

“The corp marshal was at the board a few days ago, where he expressed confidence in the conduct of such third party examination by the board.

“He solicited for a partnership with the board to conduct the corps’ examination coming up soon.

“The examination is for three cadres – officers, marshal inspectorate and road marshal assistant cadres,” Benjamin said.

He advised the prospective candidates for the examination to adhere strictly to instructions to prevent unfounded speculations.

”The board still finds it hard to believe speculations trailing the Police recruitment examination that candidates were examined in Arabic, alongside other subjects.

“Such rumours are not only misleading, but malicious and wicked.

“Let me state clearly that the candidates were tested on only English Language and nothing more,” he told NAN.

The spokesman said that JAMB would continue to be transparent in examination conduct, adding that it would always give candidates equal opportunities.

According to him, the board has been equipped with human and materials resources to conduct hitch-free examinations for recruitment, promotion and other selections in the most transparent manner.

“It is because of the confidence that organisation such as the EFCC, West African College of Surgeons and others have in our process that we conducted similar examinations for them in the past,” Benjamin said.

Belgium Must Learn From England’s Golden Generation – Roberto Martinez

Featured Image

Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez has revealed that the team are learning from the failure of England’s ‘Golden Generation’ to succeed on the International stage.

England’s squad in the first decade of the 21st century had high expectations placed on their shoulders, with the likes of David BeckhamPaul ScholesJohn TerryWayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard all featuring for the Three Lions.

The team never amounted to any international success, and Martinez wants to avoid a similar fate for his Belgian stars.

“You do try to find out what stopped England going on to achieve something,” the former Everton boss told reporters.

“Over a lot of years, you speak to people, who played against that team or were in the dressing room, and you’re trying to find reasons. It’s very difficult when something hasn’t really clicked – it’s very interesting. There are many dressing rooms, many teams because it doesn’t just happen at international level, it happens at club level. And there is never one reason why things don’t click into place. It’s almost a combination of things that, for one reason, go the wrong way and it almost becomes a negative momentum. What you learn is that you need to find the level of commitment of everyone to become a team.

“I’m not bothered by the label one way or the other, but to be the Golden Generation, you need to win gold. You need to win the Olympic gold or the World Cup, you need to win something. We need to make it a Golden Generation. You get to the international level and the margin for error is very, very little because straightaway you are in the knockout phase. Even if you lose a game in the group phase, you are going to be against it to try to qualify. That means you have to have a real strong mentality to make it competitive. The tactical and technical aspects of the game are important, but it is almost more important to be right psychologically for the occasion.”

I Can’t Stop Mauro Icardi From Leaving Inter Milan – Luciano Spalletti

Featured Image

Inter Milan coach Luciano Spalletti says he could be powerless to stop Mauro Icardi from being poached by a major European club, despite assurances from the Argentinian star that he is going nowhere.

“I’ve spoken with Mauro several times and he sent very precise signals,” Spalletti told Sky Sports Italia.

“He’s happy at Inter and wants to stay, but then there are clubs which, if they decide to take a player, you could have been saying ‘I won’t leave here’ the day before, then the next day they take you and in the end you’re happy to go, even though the previous day you were thinking very differently.

“We have to be ready for anything, but for now there are no signals and no doubts about what he wants.”

Mauro Icardi has been with Inter since 2013, netting 107 times across five seasons.

Davy Klaassen says he determined to fight for a place in the Everton team when pre-season training begins in July.

Everton outcast Davy Klaassen insists he feels “at home” and wants to fight for his Goodison future.

Last summer’s signing from Ajax has made only 16 appearances following his £23.5m switch.

“For the team, we want to finish higher than this season – and I want to play as much as possible,” Klaassen told EvertonTV. “We have a vacation now and I will relax for a couple of weeks but then start training to come back in top condition.

“That is my goal and everybody’s goal, so there is going to be good competition for places. You have to be ready as soon as you are needed. It is hard to be patient but if you keep working it will come. You have to work hard and try to show yourself when you get a chance.”

Group Vows To Declare ‘Biafra’s Independence On May 30’

Featured Image

The Biafra Zionists Federation (BZF) has stated that nothing would stop their plans to declare Biafra republic on May 30.

Nigerian Guardian reports that the group added that no amount of fighter jets deployed against the zone would stop the group from announcing Biafra and occupying the Enugu State Government House, which it said, was the designated headquarters of Biafra on May 30.

It is believed that air surveillance by the joint patrol of Army and Police had increased in the zone since Monday; fuelling fears of possible clashes in the event of security breaches.

But the leader of the group, Mazi Benjamin Onwuka, told newsmen in Enugu that the group was prepared to face any kind of security apparatuses that may be deployed to frustrate the exercise.

Onwuka alos called on Biafrans to assemble at the Enugu Government House on May 30, asking Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to steer clear of controversy “by vacating office before that date.”

He said already the, “fighter jets deployed for that purpose are hovering everywhere in Enugu State and southeast. The agenda is simple, to intimidate and instill fear in us and in our members.

“But, we want to make it clear that we cannot be intimidated; that era is gone. Should anything happen to any of our members on that day all those involved will pay dearly for it.

“Nigeria and President Muhammadu Buhari are already in panic. You can see them flying fighter jets all over. This is intimidation. They have failed,” he said.

Onwuka further said his group expects “all Biafrans to observe a public holiday on May 30, adding: “Nigeria will not escape independence of Biafra on May 30th, if they arrest us, they have dug their hole. If they don’t arrest us, the announcement will be made.“

“Nigeria will not escape it because of the diplomatic support of the United States of America; we have their backing. We initiated Buhari’s visit to the White House; people don’t know what happened in the background.”

John Terry’s Future At Aston Villa Is For Him To Decide – Steve Bruce

Aston Villa’s manager Steve Bruce has revealed John Terry’s future at the club is entirely up to him after his side’s Championship playoff final loss to Fulham on Saturday

Aston Villa were denied the chance to return to the Premier League after a crushing 1-0 defeat at Wembley.

John Terry, who is out of contract this summer, was a key cog in Bruce’s team this term, providing stability and leadership in his 32 league appearances. However, his future at the club is now in doubt after Saturday’s failure to win promotion.

Asked if he expected Terry, 37, and midfielder Jack Grealish to stay on for another season, Bruce said: “Is John going to stay? That’s the question for everybody. That’ll depend on John.

“There’ll be discussions over the next few weeks. He had an option [for a further year’s contract] if we’d gone up but we haven’t got that now.

“Of course there is going to be speculation over Jack. I would like him to stay; another year with us will do him a world of good. We will see what happens.”

Third Successive Champions League Win Is ‘Something Crazy’ – Zinedine Zidane

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has called the club’s third successive Champions League win “something crazy” but is not thinking about number four yet.

The La Liga side were victorious again in Europe, beating Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev on Saturday evening, thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and a Gareth Bale double.

In the process, Zinedine Zidane became the first coach to win the Champions Leagues in three consecutive seasons, having only taken charge of the team in his first senior management role in January 2016.

“Tonight is certainly a historic moment,” he told BeIn Sports. “To win three times in a row… It’s something crazy to experience that. Even if we believe it, we think about it when we work hard.

“With a team like this, we can go far but to win three of them, it’s something crazy. You have to make the most of it, and think about what the players have done together.”

Real Madrid have continued to dominate in Europe with a fourth Champions League victory in a row now a possibility, although Zidane is focused on celebrating his most recent win.

Zidane said: “We are going to think about what we achieved, enjoy the moment first. This is the most important thing now.

“We had a complicated season but to finish it with this result, this game, this great joy, makes us really happy.

“I’ve had a little bit of time to think about what this means. This is the status of this club. This is a legendary club, a club that has won 13 Champions Leagues so I’m happy to be part of this history.”

Zidane also hailed Bale’s first goal but stopped short of ranking the overhead kick higher than his own stunning volley in the 2002 final against Bayer Leverkusen, adding: “It’s not the same thing. This is just the latest one that we have witnessed. Gareth’s goal was magnificent. Congratulations to him.”

Report: Maurizio Sarri Has Agreement To Replace Antonio Conte At Chelsea

Featured Image

Chelsea have a general agreement with Maurizio Sarri via his representatives to take over if Antonio Conte leaves his role as manager, according to Sky in Italy.

However, Chelsea have no intention of paying Sarri’s £7million (€8m) release clause, which expires on May 31, Sky in Italy are reporting.

Sky Sports reports that this is in part because the Blues will need to pay £17.5m (€20m) in compensation if they decide to sack the Italian Conte, who lifted the FA Cup with the Blues last week.

The update suggests Sarri could be on his way to Chelsea early next week because of the expiration date on his release clause.

The Blues were disappointing in their Premier League title defence this season, finishing fifth in the table.

Napoli announced earlier this week that they have an agreement with ex-Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti to become their next manager.
