182 Prison Inmates Still Missing After Minna Jail Break

Featured Image

More than 180 inmates in a medium-security prison in central Nigeria were at large after unidentified gunmen opened fire on the facility, the government said on Monday.

The attack happened late Sunday at the jail in the Tunga area of the Niger state capital, Minna. Guards were overpowered and inmates were able to escape.

“Out of the 210 inmates that escaped from prison custody, 28 have been re-arrested while 182 are still at large,” Nigeria’s interior minister Abdurrahman Dambazau told reporters.

“We have identified some lapses… part of it is that the prison personnel on duty yesterday were inadequate,” he said after touring the prison.

An investigation has begun but it was not immediately clear who or what was behind the incident.

Earlier today, the Niger Command of the Nigeria Prisons Service confirmed the death of its officer and a motorcyclist in the Sunday jail break at the Minna  Medium Security Prison.

The command’s Spokesman, DSP Rabiu Shuaibu, made the confirmation in a statement on Monday.

“On Sunday, June 3, 2018, at 8:00p.m., there was a jailbreak at Minna Medium Security Prison located at Tunga area of Minna metropolis.

“The unfortunate incident was perpetrated by armed criminals who attacked the prison and gained access after exchange of gunfire with armed prison men.

“The incident led to the death of a prison officer and a motorcyclist, who conveyed a prison officer on night duty,’’ Shuaibu said.

Periodic jailbreaks occur in Nigeria’s congested and poorly maintained prisons, mostly aided by criminal gangs to free their comrades.

In November 2014 a group of gunmen armed with explosives blasted a prison in the town of Koton Karfe, in Kogi state, which neighbours Niger to the south: 132 inmates escaped.

AFP reports that in 2012 the same prison was raided by gunmen who freed more than 100 inmates. Boko Haram Islamists claimed responsibility and said its fighters were being kept in the facility.

St. Chika began recording the song on Sunday, May 20 and finished on Thursday, May 24, 2018. His song lasted 4 hours, 2 minutes and 4 seconds.

Indian Police have arrested a popular actress in Southern State of Tamil Nadu for allegedly running a prostitution racket.

Sangeetha Balan, 41, was nabbed from her home in state capital Chennai, along with her male partner Sathish, police said on Monday.

They were produced in a court that remanded them in judicial custody for two weeks.

The arrests came after police raided a resort in Panaiyur on the outskirts of Chennai, based on a tip-off.

“We conducted raids at the resort during the weekend and rescued four young girls who revealed that they were lured into prostitution by the actress,’’ a police official said.

Initial police investigation has indicated that the actress and Sathish used to lure young girls into flesh trade on the assurance that they would be offered roles in Tamil movies and television serials, he said.

“The rescued girls have been sent to a rehabilitation home. A probe has been ordered and we intend to file a charge sheet against the actress and her partner in the case soon.

‘Yahoo Yahoo Not Normal’ – Falz Sheds Light On ‘This Is Nigeria’ Video (WATCH)

Featured Image

Popular Nigerian rapper, Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana, has shed more light with respect to the video of his trending song, “This Is Nigeria” – a cover of Childish Gambino’s record breaking song, ‘This is America’.

Falz gave this explanation while addressing his highly debated ‘This is Nigeria’ video which touches on many issues including the Nigeria police, corruption and online fraud, also known as ‘yahoo yahoo’.

Despite the criticism and backlashes that have greeted the song, the concept has been hailed by many, including prominent US hip-hop superstar, Sean Combs, alias P Diddy, and has also gathered more than three million views on Youtube.

WATCH VIDEO: Falz – This Is Nigeria

But in an interview with CNBC Africa, the actor, singer and comic admitted that the manner in which Childish Gambino “told the American story” inspired him to embark on the project.

“I was inspired by that and I thought it would be amazing to tell the Nigerian story,” he said.

“I feel like we need to stay at a heightened level of social consciousness and political awareness out here because everyone is seemingly distracted by entertainment… that we sort of forget we’re facing a lot of struggles as a country.

“At the end of the day, money is very important. People need to make money, even I need to make money. But I feel like at every interval we need to stop and think. We need to pause and look around. Are we becoming too insensitive?”

“It’s very appalling and it’s very disturbing that the irregular has become regularised and more people now look at things that should be frowned upon as normal.

“Oh you know it’s just hustle, they’re just trying to make ends meet meanwhile that is blatantly a crime, that is blatantly wrong.

“I didn’t feel any need to take back what I said about Yahoo boys and I still stood by what I said. I readdressed the point in my ‘This is Nigeria’ video.”

Speaking on the insecurity issues in the country, Falz stated that the police are not protecting lives and needs revamp.

“The serious insecurity issue that we have right now, nobody is secure.

“The police force that is supposed to be enforcing law and order aren’t really doing that if we’re going to be honest. In my opinion, the entire police force needs a complete revamp.

“People constantly in the north being killed, being kidnapped. It’s really disturbing. And that what I said earlier about insensitivity.

“We’re all carried away by everything that is going on. We’re forgetting that everyday little girls, little children are being kidnapped, being killed and it’s just not right,” Falz added.

Dirty Lagos Buses By Oshineye Victor Oshisada

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

It is conventional that, whenever we, as Nigerians are confronted with challenges, the usual mantra that is invoked is: “Prayer to God is the solution.” It is believed that “prayer’’, “prayer” and nothing, but “prayer” is the solution to our numerous problems. But, can our resort to “prayer” without pragmatic efforts solve problems? I doubt if it is the panacea for every challenge. Two instances readily come to my mind.

This piece was written by Oshineye Victor Oshisada and was first published on Nigerian Guardian. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

In the early 1970s, my radio-mechanic assured me that, if he retired into seclusion for prayer, he would successfully accomplish the task of repairs. Instantly, I concluded that he was incompetent and a failure. The second instance was a student who confidently told me that if she prayed on to her bath- water, she would succeed in her examinations. The lazy drone spent hours praying in the bathroom, but failed her examinations. I have it on the authority of the ancient Romans: `Ora et labora`, meaning. “Pray and work”. The Romans did not exhort us to pray, and fail to work. Therefore, actions and not prayers alone can solve our problems. It is against this backdrop that our public utilities are examined.

A case that is in view is the appalling condition of transportation in Lagos State. Do we need to pray to keep our utilities in clean order? In Lagos State, there are privately and government-owned transportation systems. This writer is more concerned with the privately owned buses, than the modern Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) owned by Lagos State government. The none-government buses are so horrific and terrifying. The BRT buses have their deficiencies, notwithstanding, I shall touch upon them later. The long and big buses are in my focus. Thousands of commuters live in Ikorodu city, and its environs. By environs, it’s meant that apart from Ikorodu city, there are many satellite towns and villages around it. Because of the basic necessity for accommodations and work, people come in droves to these surrounding locations. Besides, Ikorodu city itself is a developing commercial centre.

Therefore, commuters come in and out every morning for work and other transactions. They do these through messy and untidy buses. These buses are not cleaned for years or months, and the upholsteries are in tatters. What with the conductors and fares collectors who may number up to four in some cases? They look filthy in appearances, uncouth in behaviour and uncivil in their tongues. I have occasions to caution and castigate these conductors: “Please, be civil in your tongue with me .Comparatively, I am as old as your uncle. After all, I am entitled to collect my balance from you”. I try to avoid the use of “father”, so as not to incense him; two wrongs do not make a right. There is what is described as “polite insult”. So, I must be polite in my insult to the bus workers.

The stenches emanating from their bodies are so intolerable.. Do the commuters have to pray to God to have the buses in hygienic condition? Definitely not. The seats’ heads-rests cause cancer of the hind-heats. The floors of these buses are like dung-hills or refuse dumps: empty plastic bottles of water roll here and there. One day, I was startled like a rabbit to stand up, because I had a feeling that a snake was coiling around and meandering on my legs. “Danfo” mini-buses are not exempted. These are good for carrying goods, but not human beings.

Do we need prayers to keep these buses clean? Is it not the supervisions of Lagos State Transport Ministry officials that are required? The concerned transport operators must not continue to treat the paying passengers like animals. In the process, the clean outfits of passengers are stained and smeared with coloured substances. Worse still, the seats are so compact that you feel cramp on your legs. Lagos State Ministry of Transportation must see to the cleanliness of these buses by punishing the operators to ensure compliances with rules of hygiene. No prayer to God, with this end in view.

Furthers medicine and drugs peddlers abound inside these buses. These peddlers begin their sales gimmicks by regaling the passengers with the sexist comments, jokes and stories for customs and encouragements. These sexophiliac tendencies send the passengers reeling in nauseating laughter and guffaw, to the annoyance of other serious and cool-minded passengers. Theses drug-peddlers in the buses must be banned forthwith with stringent penalties, because the drugs are not prescribed or recommended by doctors. These peddlers are dangers to the gullible and fickle-minded buyers. Prescriptions must be according to doctors, diagnoses of patients’ ailments. Unrecommended drugs sold inside buses are dangerous to buyers’ health. Therefore, drug sellers must be banned from inside buses. They do not operate in BRT buses, however.

What is more, inside the small coaster buses, besides that they are equally filthy, five instead of four passengers are jam-packed like sardines in a row, and they are compelled to pay fares as much as N250 to Oshodi and N 250 back to Ikorodu. There is no human feeling .The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation must look into these overcrowding, with exorbitant fares and discomforts.

For the BRT blue buses, there is comfort, because these are air-conditioned. But the snag lies in the ageing buses which often squeak, causing trauma and the fear that something un-toward is about to occur. Besides, the BRT drivers do not care about what befalls the passengers whenever they are crossing the kyphotic sleeping-police. God knows how many pregnant women, aged and physically-challenged passengers who are in the buses. There must be element of care, in the interest of the afore mentioned categories of passengers.

On the whole, what I am advocating are that the buses must be clean, and the politeness of the conductors /fares collectors, the regular maintenance culture and moderate transport fares in Lagos State. After all, there is no increase in petrol prices to warrant increase in the bus fare. These considerations require deliberate efforts with determinations, but not “prayers”.

VIDEO: Ruggedman Reveals Why He’s Yet To Sign Upcoming Artistes – ‘Most Of Them Are Greedy’

Featured Image

Popular Nigerian entertainer and veteran rapper, Michael Ugochukwu Stephens, better known by his stage name Ruggedman, has revealed why he is reluctant to sign upcoming artistes to his Rugged Record label.

Undisputedly one of Nigeria’s finest rap acts, Ruggedman, during an interview with HipTV, said he is yet to sign any upcoming artist because most of them are greedy, selfish and impatient.

Is Police Your Friend? Ruggedman Asks In New Music Video (WATCH)

Recalling that he had tried working with a few young artistes in the country’s music industry, the Nigerian rapper, fondly called Ruggedy Baba, noted that a “lots of them miss the point”.

His words: “I have actually tried working with a couple of young talents, and trust me, lots of them miss the point.”

“A lot of them just want to be popular real quick, a lot want to be out there and just be like Wizkid, Davido, Tuface not checking how long these people I have just mentioned have been in the industry, how long they have been paying dues for.”

“I have worked with a couple of young artistes who were too quick, who were in a hurry, who had nothing else to offer except talent.”

“Talent is not enough. You need to bring more than talent to the table, because some of you have messed up the chances for yourselves by being greedy, selfish, in a hurry, by being rude to people who have invested millions in you and the backlash of that is affecting other young artistes even if they are very good, even if they have a lot to offer.

“Because of the bad things you have done to other record labels, now others are suffering for it. So, it is not about Rugged Label anymore not wanting to sign people, it is about young artistes themselves.

“So now, we are being careful. You won’t spend 20, 30, 40 million on an artiste and he or she just gets up and walks away because they feel they can do better or they should have been bigger than they are right now, forgetting that all you brought to the table was talent.”

Lagos Police To ‘Wield Big Stick’ On ‘Unlawful’ Okada Riders From June 15

Featured Image

The Lagos State Police Command has said that plans have been concluded to commence massive arrest of unlawful commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as Okada riders from June 15.

Speaking after a meeting between the Lagos State Police Command and commercial motorcycle unions, the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, said the decision was made following the May 30 attack on the Ibeshe Police Post, during which a police patrol vehicle was burnt.

In a statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, it is understood that the meeting was attended by leaders of the Motorcycle Operators Association of Lagos State, Nagari Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association and Okada Riders Welfare Association.

He said during the meeting, held at the MD Abubakar Conference Hall of the Police Headquarters, the CP decried the attitude of some okada riders who attack members of the public or constituted authorities at the slightest disagreement.

The statement read in part, “During the meeting, the CP said the police would not only arrest unruly okada riders but ensure that they face the full wrath of the law.”

Oti, in the statement, added that five resolutions were reached at the end of the meeting which would take effect from Friday, June 15.

In his words, from June 15, “Any motorcycle without licence plate number will be impounded; “All commercial motorcycle operators are restricted from plying the highways and the bridges;

“Every commercial motorcycle operator must register with any of the approved unions for the purpose of accountability and easy identification.

“Every commercial motorcycle operator must wear an apron which must indicate the union he belongs and bear boldly, his identification number.

“A joint taskforce, comprising the police, the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental Sanitation and members of the motorcycle unions to oversee the implementation of the resolution reached and the enforcement of the Lagos State traffic laws.”

He said the CP also charged members of the union to embark on massive enlightenment of their members before enforcement will begin on June 15, so that they don’t run foul of the law.

In his words, from June 15, “Any motorcycle without licence plate number will be impounded; “All commercial motorcycle operators are restricted from plying the highways and the bridges;

NUPENG: Petroleum Workers Threaten Strike After 21 Days Over Unpaid Salaries

Featured Image

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Sunday, June 3, issued a 21-day ultimatum to employers in the Nigerian oil and gas sector to address workers’ welfare or witness a total shutdown.

Speaking at a news conference in Lagos, NUPENG president, Williams Akporeha, said that over 500 union members have not been paid after working for some international oil companies.

Aside that, he further disclosed that the companies have continuously ill-treated the workers who are also casuals.

According to him, the companies did not allow for unionisation, refused collective bargaining negotiation, non-payment of end of contract benefits and practice other anti-labour activities.

“This is alien to our extant industrial rules. Some of the workers have died, while others are roaming the streets because they could not get their money,” Akporeha said.

“A prominent oil company which is among the debtors claimed that it cannot locate the contractor who hired the workers to do the job. This is sad.’’

The NUPENG president further called on the oil companies to prevail on such contractors to do the needful as it was criminal and a slap to the government.

“It is few months to the expiration of the agreement and Petroleum Tanker Drivers have shown considerable tolerance and endurance in the denial of their rights,’’ he said.

Akporeha said the ultimatum would take effect from tomorrow and urged the affected organisations to resolve contending issues to avoid further action.

Nigerian Football Legend, Nwankwo Kanu Robbed At Russian Airport

Featured Image

Former Super Eagles and Arsenal striker, Nwankwo Kanu was allegedly robbed at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport in Russia.

The ex-Eagles captain had just landed in Russia from London for a World Cup curtain raiser game organised by Fifa when the cash sum of over £8,000 was taken from his suitcase.

Kanu, 41, reported the money missing when he reached Kaliningrad and Russian police say the money has been recovered and was taken by two loaders at the airport. Spokeswoman for the Russian Interior Ministry, Lieutenant colonel Irina Volk, said the loaders were dealing with the baggage from a London to Moscow flight.

The loaders, aged 30 and 36, face criminal investigation and could be sent to jail for up to six years.

2018 World Cup: Nwankwo Kanu Gets Robbed Of N4 Million At Russian Airport

Former Super Eagles of Nigeria and Arsenal star Nwankwo Kanu had £8,230 in cash stolen from his suitcase in Moscow after he arrived from London, says report coming from Russia.

Russian News Agency, TASS reports that US$11,000 (approximately N4 million) was stolen from him.

It was gathered that Kanu was allegedly robbed by two loaders at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport while on his way to another Russian city that will host the Nigerian squad’s 2018 FIFA World Cup opening match.

The 41-year-old Nigerian reported the money missing when he reached Kaliningrad – one of 11 Russian cities to host the tournament that kicks off in less than two weeks – where he was playing in a World Cup curtain raiser game organised by FIFA.

“Two baggage handlers were detained after Kanu discovered that he was missing $11,000 upon receiving his bags and checking in at a hotel in Kaliningrad,” Russia’s Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

“Two handlers who unloaded baggage from the London-to-Moscow flight and stole the money from the passenger’s luggage have been identified and detained,” the ministry said in an online statement.

The Interior Ministry later confirmed the former Arsenal striker’s identity to the state-run TASS and RIA news agencies.

Lt-Col Irina Volk, spokeswoman for the Russian Interior Ministry, said the loaders were dealing with the baggage from a London to Moscow flight.

Kanu, travelling on a British passport, had appealed for help to police in Kaliningrad.

Vokm said: “The stolen cash was removed [by the loaders] and will soon be returned to the owner.”

Mash online news outlet reported:

“The World Cup has not even begun yet, but world soccer celebrities already require the help of Russian police.”

The loaders, aged 30 and 36, face criminal investigation and could be sent to jail for up to six years.

Kanu played alongside ex-Manchester United and England star Wes Brown in a FIFA legends team against a Russian legends side.

The ex-Arsenal man, a former Nigerian international, did not mention the theft in speaking to the media in the Baltic city, where England will play on 28 June.
