Naira Loses Against dollar

Featured Image

The Naira on Wednesday fell by one point, exchanging at N361.5 to the dollar at the parallel market in Lagos, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

This is just as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) approved an upward review of the trading margin for Bureau de Change (BDC) operators in the country.

The Nigerian currency had exchanged at N360.50 to the dollar on Tuesday.

The Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N484 and N420 respectively at the market.

At the Bureaux De Change (BDC) window, the naira was sold at N360 to the dollar while the Pound Sterling and Euro closed at N484 and N420, respectively.

Trading at the investors’ window saw the naira close at N360.95 to the dollar.

At the CBN segment, the naira was sold at N305.95 to the dollar, while the Pound Sterling and Euro closed at N410.71 and N360.16, respectively.

The naira exchanged at N47.83 and N23.93 against the Yuan and the South African Rand.

Currency traders said the demand for the dollar had remained high in spite of the huge interventions of the CBN at the foreign exchange market.

NAN reports that the CBN had been making frantic efforts to keep the naira afloat through its series of interventions at the FX market.

Confirming the review of rates for BDCs, the acting Director, Corporate Communications of the CBN, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, had said the decision was aimed at giving the BDCs a level playing field to enable them to compete favourably with other authorised foreign exchange (forex) dealers.

With the review, BDC operators will now buy the United States dollar from the CBN at N357/$ and sell same at N360, leaving the currency dealers with a margin of N3. The revision also means that BDCs will buy forex at the same rate that banks buy from the CBN for retail transactions such as BTA, PTA and for school fees.

Falz stated this during an interview Usifo Umozokpea of BBC Africa, while addressing his highly debated ‘This is Nigeria’ video, which touches on many issues including the Nigeria police, corruption and online fraud, also known as ‘yahoo yahoo’.

‘Yahoo Yahoo Not Normal’ — Falz Sheds Light On What He Said On ‘This Is Nigeria’ Video

Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana,

His statement comes at a period of time when the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) is requesting that he withdraws the viral video or face legal action.

The group, in a statement by its Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Tuesday, condemned the song and the video and further issued Falz a seven-day ultimatum to take it down.

”The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) strongly denounces the Shaku Shaku dance video. It is thoughtless, insensitive and highly provocative. It is a hate video. It is Islamophobia nulli secundus. This video has the potential of causing religious crisi of unprecedented dimension. We therefore demand its withdrawal and an apology to Nigerian Muslims within seven days or the authors and their agents will face legal action if they fail to comply,” the Statement had read in part.

But in the interview with BBC Africa, Falz, an actor, singer and comic, said majority of what he has been facing, in terms of backlash is just a matter of people that are trying to shoot the messenger so that they miss the message.

Read part of the interview below: ”The video has been very well received. Even initially when I was releasing it, I didn’t sort of anticipate the magnitude of reaction… I thought there will be some form of reaction and conversation but I didn’t know how largely it will be received.”

”It was important, first of all, I was inspired by the original, This is America by Childish Gambino, I thought it was a very artistic and creative way to tell the American story and I thought it will be amazing to tell the Nigerian story in a similar fashion.”

“It was very important to stir up a heightened level of political and social consciousness out here.”

”Majority of what I have been facing, in terms of backlash is just a matter of people that are trying to shoot the messenger so that they miss the message, but at the end of the day, the message is really clear and everyone knows that the message is the truth.”

FG Warns Employers Against Sacking Women Over Marital, Maternal Status

Featured Image

The Federal Government yesterday, told delegates at the ongoing International Labour Conference, ILC,  in Geneva, Switzerland, that employers of labour in public and private sectors have been warned against sacking women from work due to their marital or maternity status.

The federal government yesterday, in Geneva, Switzerland, told delegates at the ongoing International Labour Conference, ILC, that employers of labour in public and private sectors have been barred from sacking women from work due to their marital or maternity status.

Ngige said,

“The promotion of youth and women employment, and enhancement of the status of women at work continue to be a big challenge in our society over the last decade. This has been exacerbated by economic recession brought about by fall in oil prices, militancy in some parts of the country, especially the North East, and the issue of returnee migrants, majority of whom are women and young girls trafficked for slavery and sex work.

“For a country in which females constitute 49.4 per cent of the total population of over 190 million, it is, therefore, imperative that the issues which hinder increased and effective women participation in the labour force be properly addressed.

“To address the issue of gender inequality and youth unemployment, the government drew up and had been implementing an Economic Recovery and Growth Plan. Government also initiated a School/ to Work (N’Power) programme, designed to empower young women and men with skills to facilitate their entry into the labour market. The programme has an initial 2-year life span.

“In terms of specific measures to address inequality our government recorded some successes in the following areas: The principle of equal pay for equal work for all, without discrimination on account of sex, is enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended. A Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE) is in place to promote girl/child school enrolment and also put in place special packages for women in the region for their economic empowerment.

“Employers of labour in both the public and private sectors are by regulation requested to provide work place crèches for nursing mothers for ease at work place. In the Public Service, Government recently increased the period for maternity leave from 12 to 16 weeks to allow enough recuperation time for both baby and mother, especially in the area of breast feeding. In addition all disciplinary proceedings against any female staff which might have been taken during the period of her maternity leave shall be put in abeyance till the expiration of the leave.

“Employers of labour are also barred from removal of women from work due to their marital or maternity status, Illegal labour migration, contract staffing and labour casualization which affects most women, are being reformed through policies and regulations at national, bilateral and multilateral levels.”

2018 World Cup: Scandal Hits Mexico Camp As Players Throw World Cup Farewell Party With Prostitutes

Featured Image

According to reports, members of Mexico’s national football squad held a farewell party with around 30 prostitutes before the team travelled to Europe ahead of the World Cup.

Mexican gossip magazine, TVNotas claim nine members of Mexico’s World Cup squad partied with dozens of escorts at a private compound in Mexico City last Saturday following the team’s 1-0 win over Scotland in a World Cup preparatory match.

The magazine published images of players arriving at the party under the headline “The true farewell of the Tri!“.

However, Mexican officials said the players involved will not be sanctioned because they attended the party in their free time. General Secretary of the Mexican Football Federation, Guillermo Cantu said the players would not be punished because “they have not missed training”. “A free day is a free day and those are the risks that one runs with freedom,” Cantu said.

Among the players in attendance were goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, Benfica striker Raul Jimenez, Los Angeles Galaxy brothers Jonathan and Giovani dos Santos, defender Carlos Salcedo and midfielder Marco Fabian, who both play for Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany.

The Mexico team is already in Copenhagen, where they are preparing for a friendly against Denmark on Saturday before heading on to Russia.

This isn’t the first time the Mexican football team have faced scandal like this, in September 2010, Mexico players partied with women after a game in Monterrey. On that occasion, all participants were fined while defender Efrain Juarez and forward Carlos Vela were suspended from the selection for six months.

In June 2011, shortly before a trip to Argentina to participate in the Copa America, Mexican players hired sex workers in a hotel in Ecuador. They were fined and suspended from the national team for half a year.

AC Milan are preparing a package for Lyon’s Memphis Depay which could see midfielder Suso moving in the opposite direction. A fee of up to €40million has been suggested, and while no offer has been made yet, it’s believed initial talks have been held by representatives of both clubs. (Gazzetta dello Sport)

Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos has decided to choose Arsenal as his next club, snubbing interest from Manchester United. That’s the view of his father Charalambos Papastathopoulos, with the player set for €19million move to north London on a three-year contract.

“He is currently in England and will be doing everything he needs on Tuesday,” said the player’s father. “There was also interest from United, but he would have had to wait until July. Sokratis chose Arsenal.” (Sport Bild)
