Senate Ask INEC To Release The Official Results Of The June 12, 1993 Elections

Featured Image

The Nigerian Senate has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the official results of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

The demand was made by the lawmakers during plenary at the upper chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja, on Thursday. This comes a day after President Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 as Democracy Day, replacing May 29, in honour of late MKO Abiola – the presumed winner of the election that took place on that day in 1993.

President Buhari had explained that June 12 was more symbolic than May 29 and also conferred a posthumous GCFR title on the late businessman.

Even though the late Chief Abiola was presumed winner, the election results were never declared.

Ekiti state lawmaker, Senator Biodun Olujimi lauded President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to honour Abiola for his contribution to Nigeria’s democracy

“I salute the courage of President Buhari for this. However, there are some issues that should be addressed so that we fill confident that this is not a Greek gift,” She said.

“The results of that election was never announced. This is the time for the result to be properly announced by INEC because government is a continuum. Also, MKO Abiola should be declared a president.

“If and when that is done, there has to be reparation of all his entitlements to his surviving families. Ambassador Babagana Kingibe must also be recognized as Vice President of Nigeria and everything must be brought to the legislature so that we can right all the wrongs.”

“Also, June 12 must also be declared a public holiday for the whole of Nigeria so we can begin the celebration of Democracy Day,” she noted.

Militant Herders Kill 15 In Benue

Featured Image

At least 15 people were killed over the past few days in separate attacks in central Nigeria’s Benue State, the scene of regular clashes between Christian farmers and nomadic cattle herders, official sources said Wednesday.

Suspected militant herders carried out the attacks on several villages in under 48 hours, Benue State information minister Lawrence Onoja said.

The village of Tse Ishav, near Guma, was attacked at around 3am on Wednesday, with militants “leaving behind eight corpses, several missing and many wounded,” he said.

It came after two other people were killed on Monday by the same armed men close to the nearby locality of Yelwata, he added.

The head of Guma’s local government Anthony Shawon confirmed the death toll of 10, adding that the attackers set fire to houses and farms as they left.

The same militia also carried out further attacks in the neighbouring district of Logo where “five people were killed… and many more wounded,” said Onoja.

The head of the local government Richard Nyajo echoed the report, adding that police reinforcements have been deployed.

Benue state has seen a wave of deadly clashes which have left hundreds dead in recent months.

The area lies in the so-called “Middle Belt” between Nigeria’s mainly-Christian south and predominantly-Muslim north.

AMCON Plans To Sell Off Arik, Aero Contractors, Others This Year

Featured Image

The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has indicated plans to dispose of some of its assets in 2018, which it listed to include Arik Air, Aero Contractors, Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN), Delta Queen, among others.

In a statement released by AMCON’s head of corporate communications, Jude Nwauzor, the corporation’s 2017 performance was boosted by selling Keystone Bank to new investors for N41 billion. The bank was sold to Sigma Golf Nigeria Limited and Riverbank Investment Resources Limited in March 2017.

AMCON’s managing director, Ahmed Kuru in a statement said,

“I want Nigerians to understand that our assignment at AMCON is not just tough but a daunting challenge. I think people need to pity us because we are at that stage in the life of the corporation where we are dealing with the hardcore because the low hanging fruits have been dealt with earlier in the life of AMCON.”

“I want you to understand that we are sitting on a substantial amount of assets, which we must one way or the other resolve on or before our sunset, which is around 2023/24.”

“Like I said earlier, we will deal with some of those key assets very soon like the Peugeot Nigeria Limited in Kaduna, CDL, Aero Contractors, Arik Air and a host of others. But I must tell you, as we close in on these individuals and entities that owe us, I want you to know that they will call us names, they will blackmail us, they will threaten us, malign and harass us.

“However, I can tell you that hard as they will try, we will not be deterred in going about our normal duties as mandated by law. But as we do, we ask ourselves first if the action will stand right before God Almighty; secondly, will the action be in our national interest and, is our action within the rule of law. If the answer to these three guiding principles is yes, AMCON takes decisions. It is nothing personal.”

Aminu Ismail, AMCON’s Executive Director, Operations, said the corporation’s 2017 costs were driven by an increase in the price of aviation fuel and overhead expenses for the two airlines it took over.

AMCON said it acquired 12,537 non-performing loans (NPLs) worth N1.7 trillion from 22 financial institutions, after the 2009 banking crisis. Kuru added AMCON would pursue every obligor, especially the 350 debtors of AMCON who account for almost 80% of the debts.

He said politically exposed individuals and business heavyweights, who seem untouchable, would not be spared.

Featured Image

Jack Wilshere will discuss with new Arsenal manager Unai Emery about signing a new contract worth £100,000-a-week – provided he can guarantee him an active role in the squad.

According to the Evening Standard, Jack Wilshere wants to build on his 38 appearances for the club last season and wants a contract which reflects his importance to the team after their run in the Europa League, which saw them reach the semi-finals.

MKO Abiola: Dear Nigerians, Here’s Why There Might Be No Public Holiday This #June12

Featured Image

Despite an announcement made by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, June 6, that henceforth, the nation’s Democracy Day will be holding on June 12 of every year, as against the current arrangement where the ceremony holds on May 29, there are indications that there might be no public holiday on June 12 this year, contrary to what most Nigerians are expecting.

“Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Govt has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day.

We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to the late Chief MKO Abiola,” Buhari had said on Twitter.

Buhari Formally Declares June 12 As democracy DayUnder normal circumstances, such declaration by the president is expected to be coupled with a public holiday, but the statement issued also stated that “The Commemoration and investiture will take place on Tuesday June 12th, 2018, a date which in future years will replace May 29th as a National Public Holiday in celebration of Nigeria Democracy Day.”

Nigeria ‘Scraps HND Certificates, Adopts New Rules For Polytechnics’

Featured Image

The Nigerian government has reportedly withdrew its recognition of the award of Higher National Diploma (HND) certificates issued by polytechnics in the country.

Daily Post reports that the decision was reached at the Federal Executive Council, FEC, on Wednesday where the approval of a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s tertiary education system was made.

To this effect, the award of HND will be limited to only the students currently admitted for the programmes. Also, all the programmes currently being run by polytechnics, which are not technology-based, and which are about 70%, will be scrapped.

Read details below:

Under the new rule, the polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities Councils.

The polytechnics will now be limited to award of the National Diploma (ND) while those desirous of further education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university.

To kick-start the new policy, the nation’s two most prominent polytechnics – Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic – will henceforth be known as City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna.

And to give legal teeth to these approvals, the FEC approved the submission of two Executive bills to the National Assembly for enactment.

With education being on the concurrent list, the states may wish to consolidate their tertiary institutions. But if they do not wish to follow the federal example, their programmes will continue to be regulated by the relevant agencies of the Federal Ministry of Education.

The first bill will concretise the setting up of the two city universities while the second will approve the preparation and consolidation of all federal polytechnics and colleges of education as campuses of proximate universities.

The Ministry of Justice will do the preparation and submission of the two bills to the National Assembly.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, told journalists after the weekly meeting of the council that under the reform measures, his ministry would, however, continue to license private polytechnics and colleges of education for the award of qualification at ND and National Certificate in Education (NCE) levels.

He said, “There will be no more award of HND.

“After we have exhausted the current students under the programme, there will be no more award of HND. This means that there will be no fresh admission for HND programmes. And in addition, any programme that is not technical will be out of the polytechnics.

“About 70 per cent of polytechnic graduates are in the non-technical courses. It is going to be a rigorous implementation programme.”

A ministerial committee to ensure the smooth implementation of all that is required for the take-off of the reform initiatives is to begin work immediately.

Adamu said, “The HND certificate will remain a legal tender in Nigeria and holders of such certificate will continue to be recognised as the equivalent of first degree holders without discriminatory remunerations and limit to progression in the work place.

“The NCE certificate will be retained as the minimum teaching qualification at the basic level of education. Any higher qualifications by these private or state-owned polytechnics will be only affiliation with a university. So, HND is no longer in existence, but existing HND will be respected and considered legal tender.”

Based on the 2018 edition of a survey conducted by the Global Peace Index (GPI), Nigeria has been ranked the 16th least peaceful country in the world.

The report, released on Wednesday, ranked Nigeria 148 out of the total 163 countries surveyed.

According to the survey, Iceland is the most peaceful country, closely followed by New Zealand and Austria while Syria is ranked least peaceful, coming after Afghanistan and South Sudan respectively.

In Sub-Sahara Africa, Nigeria is ranked 40 out of 44 countries, with Mauritius topping the list, while South Sudan is ranked least.

In the report produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), it is understood that the global level of peace has deteriorated by 0.27 percent in the last year, marking the fourth successive year of deterioration.

It also said the world is “less peaceful today than at any time in the last decade”.

It added that 92 countries deteriorated, while only 71 improved. Nigeria is one such countries, up one place from its 2017 ranking of 149.

The West African giant was pegged at 149 in 2016, while the figure was 151 for both 2015 and 2014.

The report said the global economic impact of violence was $14.76 trillion PPP in 2017, equivalent to 12.4 percent of global GDP, or $1,988 per person.

The report covers 99.7 percent of the world’s population and uses 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from “highly respected sources” to compile the index. These indicators are grouped into three key domains: ‘ongoing conflict’, ‘safety and security’, and ‘militarisation’.

All three domains deteriorated over the last year.

“There’s been a gradual decline in peacefulness over the last decade,” said Steve Killelea, head of IEP.

“The reason for this slow, gradual decline in peacefulness really comes back to the conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa, and the spillover effects into other areas.”
