#June12: What Buhari Said At Abiola’s investiture (FULL TEXT)

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, in Abuja conferred National Honours on three distinguished Nigerians who contributed immensely to the enthronement of democratic governance in the country.

MKO Abiola was awarded GCFR, the higest title in the land, while Alhaji Baba Gana Kingibe and Chief Gani Fawehinmi were awarded GCON.

Read full text of Buhari’s speech below:

“Today, I am very happy to be present and to preside over the Commemoration and Investiture, marking the formal official Federal Government recognition of June 12 as National Democracy Day.

The decision and this event is not meant to be and is not an attempt to open old wounds but to put right a national wrong. Nigerians of their own free will voted for Late Chief MKO Abiola and Amb. Baba Gana Kingibe, the Presidential flag bearer and running mate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 1993 elections. The Government of the day inexplicably cancelled the elections when it was clear who were going to be the winners.

We cannot rewind the past but we can at least assuage our feelings; recognize that a wrong has been committed and resolve to stand firm now and in the future for the sanctity of free elections. Nigerians would no longer tolerate such perversion of justice.
This retrospective and posthumous recognition is only a symbolic token of redress and recompense for the grievous injury done to the peace and unity of our country.

Our decision to recognize and honour June 12 and its actors is in the national interest. It is aimed at setting national healing process and reconciliation of the 25 year festering wound caused by the annulment of the June 12th elections. I earnestly invite all Nigerians across all our national divide to accept it in good faith.

Our action today is to bury the negative side of June 12, the side of ill-feelings, hate, frustrations and agony. What we are doing is celebrating and appreciating the positive side of June 12. The June 12, which restate democracy and freedom. The June 12 that overcome our various divide and the June 12 that produced unity and National cohesion. This is the June 12 we are celebrating today and we will nurture it to our next generation.

Accordingly, on behalf of the Federal Government, I tender the nation’s apology to the family of Late MKO Abiola, who got the highest votes and to those that lost their loved ones in the cause of June 12 struggle.

At this juncture, Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like everybody present to stand and observe a minute silence in honour of the memory of Chief MKO Abiola and Chief Fawehinmi and indeed all those who lost their lives in the struggle of June 12 1993.

Thank you all and God bless Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

Gov Ambode Unveils 46-Feet Statue Of M.K.O Abiola In Lagos

Featured Image

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday unveiled a 46-feet statue of Nigeria’s symbol of democracy and adjudged winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, Bashorun Moshood Kasimawo Olawale Abiola (MKO), expressing optimism that the monument will forever crystallize what he stood for in his lifetime.

Governor Ambode, who spoke at the unveiling of the statue at the MKO Abiola Garden in Alapere, Ketu said it was in the tradition of the State Government to recognise and remember heroes and heroines who contributed to the greatness of the nation and the State in particular, adding that MKO Abiola deserves the best from the State as Lagos was his success story.

Alluding to the fact that a statue was previously sited at the location, the Governor said that his administration decided to erect bigger statues for MKO Abiola and late Rights Activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi to properly situate their immense contribution to nation building.

“There was a statue done by my predecessor, Babatunde Raji Fashola but in the divine world, some things are more glorious than what you think and so we decided at the end of 2016 that we should do bigger statues for Chief Gani Fawehinmi and MKO Abiola since almost everybody passing and entering Lagos go through this particular Ojota axis and so we started late in 2016 that we should build something bigger and so it took us about a year to do this. By the time we did the one for Gani to celebrate his posthumous birthday on April 22, we also agreed that we should unveil that of MKO Abiola today, June 12.

“But just as if God has a way of crowning all efforts to mark the 25th Anniversary of June 12, our President, President Muhammadu Buhari has deemed it fit to give our own MKO Abiola the highest honour in the land, GCFR and that is why we believe strongly that your presence here is not just for this statue but it is also historic which we would always remember in the annals of the history and politics of this country that sooner than later, there would be one day we would mark as MKO Abiola Day.

“We are very happy to gather here today at the MKO Abiola garden to unveil this statue, a monument that will forever crystallize his legacy, serves as a reminder to the greatness that Chief Abiola represents in our socio-political landscape,” the Governor said.

He described MKO Abiola as a man who transcended race, tribe and religion, adding that the late philanthropist appealed to all Nigerians who voted massively for him during the 1993 Presidential election.

“Sadly, he lost his life trying to secure his mandate. Even though he was from another State, Lagos was his home. And we recognize his contribution to our State and our democracy,” Governor Ambode said.

Responding on behalf of the family, MKO Abiola’s son, Abdul Mumuni Abiola thanked Governor Ambode and the Lagos State Government for the honour done the Abiola family, saying the statue was indeed befitting to honour his late father.

“God is great. I heard about this statue six months ago and I was called to come and see it and when I got here, I saw a statue of three-storey building. This is indeed massive. The family of late MKO Abiola really appreciates this and we want to thank the Governor,” Abdul Mumuni said.

He also appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for posthumous award conferred on his father and declaring June 12 as the Democracy Day, as well as the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for standing solidly behind the struggle.

“We thank the President for doing what he did. This statue was planned before the President did what he did and so we want to thank Governor Ambode for this,” he said.

Governor Ambode, who earlier spoke at a symposium held at the Blue Roof, Lagos Television in Ikeja to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the June 12, 1993 election, paid glowing tributes to other comrades who led the struggle from the front including Gen. Alani Akinrinade, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Ambassador Walter Carrington, Justice Dolapo Akinsanya, Chief Frank Kokori, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Mr. Wale Oshun, Alhaji Balarabe Musa and other Nigerians and Civil Society Organisations, Trade and Labour unions.

“We also pay glowing tribute to the beautiful memories of patriots such as Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, Pa Michael Adekunle Ajasin, Pa Abraham Adesanya, Chief Michael Enahoro, Chief Alfred Rewane, Dr Beko Ransome Kuti, General Adeyinka Adebayo and several others including innocent ordinary Nigerians, young and old who were murdered in cold blood on the streets of Lagos and in other major cities of Nigeria. Today, we declare that their sacrifice has not been in vain,” he said.

The Governor commended Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for being the pioneer Governor to declare public holiday on June 12 throughout his tenure in office as well as Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) for his steadfastness in upholding the tradition, saying that the occasion attests to their visionary leadership.

Speaking on the theme: “Restructuring: Antidote For Efficient And Effective Polity,” guest lecturer, Dr. Dele Ashiru of the Department of Political Science, University of Lagos (UNILAG), called for the amendment of the Constitution to ensure removal of provisions which inhibit successful running of functional system, especially revenue sharing formula which he said must be by derivation, among others.

He also said considering the strategic importance of Lagos to the country, special attention must be given to the State, adding: “The Federal Government must wake up and pay Lagos adequately from the national resource so that the State can continue to play the role it had been playing in the country.”

He described Lagos as a model and mega city not only in Africa but the world, and as such all hands must be on deck to work for its sustenance.

Also, Chairman of June 12 Coalition, Comrade Linus Okoroji commended the Lagos State Government for sustained commitment to the June 12 struggle which had yielded fruits with the recent declaration of the day as Democracy Day in Nigeria and recognition of MKO Abiola as GCFR.

Police Recruitment: 6,491 Successful Candidates Commence Training On Wednesday

Featured Image

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has commenced training of 6,491 successful candidates, which is above the 6000 new recruits approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Police had earlier planned to employ the services of 6,000 Nigerians, but out of the 37,000 candidates that sat for the examination, conducted by JAMB, it was gathered that only 5,107 candidates were successful, with Kano State having the highest number with 308 candidates, followed by Katsina with 238.

But in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Head of Press and Public Relations, Police Service Commission (PSC), Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, it is understood that the newly recruited police constables were expected at their different training colleges nationwide by Wednesday, June 13, 2018 for the commencement of training.

The police spokesman also said the PSC had on Thursday, June 7, uploaded the list of 6,491 successful candidates on its recruitment portal, psc.org.ng with specific instructions on how, when and where to report for training.

He said the training colleges were opened to admit the new recruits from Friday, June 8, 2018 and will last till Wednesday June 13, 2018.

He added, “Successful candidates were required to visit the Police State Command Headquarters in their states of origin to check their names and colleges for training. 6,491 candidates were recruited, 491 higher than the presidential approval of 6,000.

“Recent recruitment exercise where 10,000 were to be enlisted, only about 9,000 passed out at the end of the exercise due to one reason or another, including certificate forgery.”

He stressed that the Police have complained of lack of manpower especially at the constable level and want to maximise the benefit of the presidential approval by ensuring that 6,000 constables were admitted at the end of the training programme.

Antoine Griezmann Refuses To Announce Which Club He Will Play For Next Season

Featured Image

Antoine Griezmann has made a decision on his future but refused to state where he will play next season when he spoke to reporters at France’s World Cup camp in Russia on Tuesday.

Last weekend, Antoine Griezmann said he would confirm his plans before France begin their World Cup campaign against Australia on Saturday.

But he told a news conference: “I apologise — I am really very sorry. I know that many of you were waiting for [his decision], but I will not be revealing it today. I have made my choice.

“However, today is not the time, nor the place, to say what it is.”

Barcelona had hoped to sign the 27-year-old on July 1, when his release clause drops to €100 million, but Atletico have offered him an improved contract worth a reported €23m a year.

France coach Didier Deschamps prohibits players from undergoing negotiations during tournaments, pushing Griezmann towards making a decision.

The France forward, who scored 29 goals and created 15 others last season, was strongly linked with Manchester United last summer before a contract tying him to Atletico until 2022 was agreed.

Barca’s pursuit has angered Atletico, who in December reported them to FIFA for making an alleged illegal approach and followed up with a statement in May that said “enough is enough.”

Cristiano Ronaldo Discusses The Chance Of Mohamed Salah Winning The Ballon d’Or

Featured Image

Cristiano Ronaldo believes the chance of Mohamed Salah winning the Ballon d’Or are not yet finished, should he recover from his shoulder injury.

Mohamed Salah, 25, injured his shoulder after a coming together with Sergio Ramos in the Champions League final against Ronaldo’s Real Madrid and is fighting to be fit in time for Russia.

Ronaldo could realistically face off against Salah’s Egypt with Portugal in this summer’s World Cup, with a last-16 tie a real possibility.

And speaking ahead of the tournament in Russia, Ronaldo did not rule Salah out of the running for the Ballon d’Or, instead insisting that it will not just be the Ronaldo vs. Lionel Messi race for the individual accolade.

“Mo Salah has been one of the revelations of the year.

“I hope his injury in the final in Kiev doesn’t keep him out [of the World Cup].

“Many people talk about the Cristiano Ronaldo-Lionel Messi battle but there are other players who have chances to enter the race [for the Ballon d’Or].

“Salah is one of them.”

Huddersfield Town Announce Signing Of Ramadan Sobhi From Stoke City

Featured Image

Huddersfield Town have completed the signing Egypt international Ramadan Sobhi from Stoke City for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old winger signs a three-year deal with the Terriers, keeping him at the John Smith’s Stadium until at least 2021.

His contract will begin after the 2018 World Cup.

Ramadan Sobhi made 30 appearances for Stoke City last season, netting three goals for the relegated side – including an equaliser against Town in West Yorkshire on Boxing Day.

The Egyptian also played a key role in his nation’s qualification to the World Cup in Russia, featuring in all six Confederation of African Football (CAF) third-round qualifiers.

On the forward joining the Terriers, head coach David Wagner said: “I’m very happy that we will be able to welcome Ramadan Sobhi to Huddersfield Town.

“He’s a real talent and has achieved a lot for a player who is only 21 years old, playing over 20 times for his country ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

Just as Jonas Lössl, Elias Kachunga and Laurent Depoitre did, Ramadan will join our club on the back of a challenging season.

“However, he already has a lot of the qualities that we look for in our ‘Terriers Identity’; he’s skilful, direct and very quick-thinking. He still has a lot of space to improve too, which is very exciting.

“We’re looking forward to working hard with Ramadan on the training pitch to give him every chance of success at Huddersfield Town.”

Arsenal Appoint Former Midfielder Freddie Ljungberg As New Under-23s Manager

Featured Image

Arsenal have announced that former midfielder Freddie Ljungberg will return to the club as head coach of the club’s under-23 side.

Freddie Ljungberg spent the 2016-17 season as the U15 coach before leaving to become then-academy director Andries Jonker’s assistant when he took over at Wolfsburg.

He will work under new academy director Per Mertesacker as Arsenal continue to make former players key figures in the youth setup.

“I’m delighted to be returning to the club,” Ljungberg said. “Arsenal has always been a special place for me and I’m really excited at this opportunity to work with our under-23 team.

“I look forward to working with the talented young players we have at the club. I know many of them well and will work hard to help them continue developing and become the best players and people they can be.”

Ljungberg inherits a team full of talent as Arsenal’s U23s won the Premier League 2 division last season despite often playing without top players like Reiss Nelson, Joe Willock and Eddie Nketiah when they were called up to Arsene Wenger’s first team.

Ljungberg’s return also helps continue Wenger’s legacy at the club after he ended his 22-year reign as manager, with Jens Lehmann also part of backroom staff under new head coach Unai Emery.

“It’s great to have Freddie back at the club. He brings great footballing experience and the highest possible levels of enthusiasm, energy and encouragement for our young professionals,” Mertesacker said.

“He understands the club’s values and how important it is to give young players the opportunity to grow and develop. When Freddie left for Wolfsburg it was with the club’s blessing and with a return to Arsenal some day in mind. Everyone knows Freddie loves the club and we look forward to him developing his career with us.”

Ljungberg joined Arsenal in 1998 and stayed for nine seasons, winning two Premier League titles and three FA Cups as well as being a member of the side that went a full league season unbeaten.

Pep Guardiola Has Some Strong Words For Yaya Toure

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola has branded Yaya Toure a liar after he accused the manager of being “cruel to him” and having “problems with African players.”

Speaking earlier this week, Yaya Toure, who was released by City at the end of the season after spending eight years with the Premier League champions, lashed out at his ex-coach, saying that he wanted to “destroy the Guardiola myth.”

Guardiola did not acknowledge Toure’s comments at a golf tournament in Spain on Tuesday, but did respond in an interview with TV3 on Saturday.

“It’s a lie and he knows it,” Guardiola said. “We were together for two years and now this is when he says it. He never told me face-to-face.”

Toure previously spent two years playing under Guardiola at Barcelona, too, before he was sold to City by the Catalan coach in 2010.

In the interview with France Football, Toure said Guardiola “has often had problems with Africans wherever he has been” and suggested the City boss is “jealous” of him.

“He will never admit it but the day he fields a team with five Africans, non-naturalised, I promise that I will send him a cake.” he added.

Julen Lopetegui has been appointed as the new Real Madrid manager – this comes just weeks after committing his future to Spain’s national team.

Julen Lopetegui signed a deal until 2020 on May 22 but Real Madrid have swooped for his services and he has agreed to join the Spanish giants after the World Cup.

The 51-year-old represented Barcelona as a player for three years but will now take charge of their bitter rivals.

Real Madrid said in an official announcement: ‘Julen Lopetegui will be the Real Madrid coach after the celebration of the 2018 World Cup.

‘Real Madrid announce that Julen Lopetegui will be the coach of the first team during the next three seasons.

‘Julen Lopetegui will join the club after Spain’s participation in the World Cup, after two years leading the national team.’

Lopetegui has never lost a match as Spain coach since taking the reins in July 2016 in the wake of the European Championship, earning 14 wins with six draws for the second-longest unbeaten start by a coach in Spain’s history.

At the World Cup, Spain will face Iran and Morocco in Group B after the challenge of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in their opener.

After the tournament, Spain will have to find a new boss ahead of the new UEFA Nations League, in which they will open against England and Croatia in September.

Barcelona could use Rafinha as a bargaining chip with Tottenham Hotspur in a bid to land Christian Eriksen. Spurs are keen on the Brazilian midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Inter Milan. The Italians had an option to sign Rafinha permanently for €35m, but believe they can land the 25-year-old at a cheaper price. Spurs have made Rafinha a transfer target but the player has also been the subject of West Ham United transfer rumours. (Sport)

Zinedine Zidane is relaxed about his future after leaving Real Madrid and has no immediate plans to return to management. The Frenchman was at the French Open tennis final and spoke to journalists at the weekend. “I’m resting and I don’t know what I’m going to do,” he said. “What’s important is the decision that I took. We will see what happens afterwards.” Madrid are yet to appoint a replacement so far, and according to French network Radio Montecarlo, Andre Villa-Boas has emerged as another candidate for the role. (Marca)

Real Madrid are weighing up whether to sign Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea or Jan Oblak from city rivals Atletico. The former would be a cheaper option, as Oblak has a €100m release clause. Courtois, who has one more year on his current Chelsea deal, is believed to favour a return to Spain for family reasons – and this summer could be the only chance for the Blues to cash in on him. (AS)

Antoine Griezmann could reveal his future today at a World Cup press conference. The striker, a Barcelona transfer target, said he would announce where he will be playing next season ahead of France’s opening game with Australia this Saturday. “In Spain, some say I’m staying, others I’m leaving,” Griezmann told Téléfoot. I’ll say it before we play the first game. The World Cup for France starts on Saturday. There is still time.” (Mundo Deportivo)

Italy

Depending on the future of Medhi Benatia, who is an Arsenal transfer target, Juventus have eyed a move for Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt. However, if they are unable to land the 18-year-old, they could make a move for 32-year-old Uruguayan, Diego Godin. The centre-back’s contract runs out in a year and may be available for £15m, with his club Atletico Madrid willing to cash in. (Tuttosport)

Juventus are closing in on Manchester United transfer target Aleksandr Golovin, with the Italians in advanced talks with CSKA Moscow. The 22-year-old is set to feature for Russia in the opening match of the World Cup against Saudi Arabia on Thursday. Juventus are believed to have been tracking Golovin for the last six months and are hopeful on completing the deal. The player was also a transfer target for Chelsea, Arsenal and Monaco. (Corriere dello Sport)

Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan is an Inter Milan transfer target for £30m. The Belgian has been with Roma for four years but is keen on the move. Nainggolan’s agent Alessandro Beltrami is believed to have already met with Inter officials. Inter could make a lower offer initially, throwing in a couple of younger players, Nicolò Zaniolo and Federico Valietti, as part of a potential deal. (Gazzetta Dello Sport)

France

Lyon are tracking Nantes’ versatile midfielder Valentin Rongier, who is also a transfer target for Marseille and Napoli. The 23-year-old can play as a defensive midfielder or in a more attacking role if required, and Lyon are exploring whether to make a bid for the player contracted until 2022. Lyon’s Jordan Ferri could be part of a swap deal. (L’Equipe)

Nice striker Alassane Plea will not leave the club for less than €25m. The Frenchman scored 16 goals in Ligue 1 last season and has become a Monaco transfer target. It is believed Nice will allow Plea to leave the club this summer but not on the cheap. Borussia Dortmund are also said to be keen, while Plea was the subject of Leicester City transfer rumours in May. (Le 10 Sport)

Germany

Schalke 04 defender Thilo Lehrer has emerged as Juventus transfer target for around €20m. The 21-year-old’s current deal runs out next summer and Schalke could lose the player for nothing. Barcelona have also made Lehrer a transfer target, with new sporting director Eric Abidal a fan of the versatile defender. (Kicker)

Borussia Dortmund face a battle to hold on to 13-year-old sensation Youssoufa Moukoko, who features for the U17 side. Moukoko scored 39 goals in 27 games last season and has now become a Barcelona transfer target. Officials from the Catalan giants were in attendance at the weekend to watch the player in action against Bayer Leverkusen, where he scored once and assisted another in a 2-0 win. (Sport Bild)

#EndSARS Today, Another Police Criminal Gang Will Replace It – Fredrick Nwabufo

The ‘End SARS Campaign’ is a shot in the air. The campaign is a combustion of citizens’ frustration without galvanised action. It is a right cause with a hollow purpose.

This piece was written by Fredrick Nwabufo. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Police brutality and criminality predate SARS. I remember, in the days of ‘Operation Sweep’ in Lagos, there were surplus reports of police criminality – extra-judicial killings, harassment and extortion.

Really, the problem is the individuals peopling the police, and not the “unit”.  The Nigeria police is still trapped in the Stalinist era of darkness. It is an entity of state terror. And an umbilical cord of inhumanity connects the top hierarchy of the police to the lees of the agency.

As a matter of fact, the police force, as it is today, is primed to be anti-people, but pro-government because of a lack of institutional and legal reform. This is why the police only excel in regime protection.
Ending SARS while the same vermin remain in the system will only recycle evil. If the unit is shut down now, in a few months, we will be back to where we are.

By the way, have you seen an honest policeman?

I did a little research on why the SARS unit of the police is brazen in criminality, and I found out that it stemmed from its mandate. SARS has been given “extra-terrestrial” powers; chief of which is to use all means to check violent crime – but in checking armed criminality innocent citizens are often the victims.

I think, it is perhaps, the most powerful unit in the police. A police acquaintance told me that most of his colleagues lobby vigorously to have themselves deployed in the unit. Why? Because it is a general and potent belief in the police that once you are deployed there, “you are made”.  This accents the commonplace perception of the Nigeria police as the Sodom of corruption.

I plead with fellow citizens, who have faced the terror of SARS, while they are on EndSARS, should campaign for an immediate and sweeping reform of the police. Nothing will change if the Nigeria police is not reformed radically. And this reform must include a hierarchal purge of the agency. If 13 deputy inspectors-general of police could be compulsorily retired for Ibrahim Idris to become inspector-general of police, I see no reason why the purge of both the top hierarchy and the rank and file of the police will not be possible.

We must seize this moment to cause a revolution in the police. We have, for too long, “stood aside and looked” while they harassed, humiliated, intimidated, violated and extorted us.

Ariana Grande “Confirms” Engagement To Pete Davidson Weeks After Dating

Featured Image

Ariana Grande is reportedly engaged to boyfriend Pete Davidson, only a month after their relationship was initially confirmed.

A source told People: “It’s a recent engagement. They’re just two people who found love quickly and make each other happy all the time.

“They both started talking about it this past weekend. It’s nothing they’ve been hiding.”

The singer too seemed to confirm reports that she’s engaged as she has been replying to fans tweeting her about a potential wedding to comedian Pete Davidson.

“I hope he knows he is marrying us as well,” one fan tweeted. “HAHAHAHAHAHH HES BEEN BRIEFED,” the 24-year-old replied.

The pair also reportedly told friends of their engagement as they attended a house party hosted by Robert Pattinson last weekend.

Ariana and SNL comedian Pete began dating earlier this year, although it’s believed that they have known each other since 2016.

Pete Davidson joined the cast of SNL aged 20, making him one of the youngest actors ever to be on the show.

Last week, the couple attended Kanye West and Kid Cudi’s Kids See Ghost listening party in Los Angeles, where they cozied up around the bonfire bash to celebrate the album’s debut.

Ghana, Others “Eager” To Import Petroleum Products From Dangote Refinery

Featured Image

Ahead of the completion of the Dangote Oil Refinery, petroleum importing African nations and Bulk Oil Distributors based in Ghana have expressed eagerness to patronize the Nigerian Refinery when production starts.

The oil buyers said arrangements have been put in place to import petroleum products from the world’s largest single-train refinery, situated, Lekki, Lagos state owned by the foremost industrialist.

The disclosure was made known at this year’s Ghanaian International Petroleum conference (Ghipcon 2018) which held in Accra, Ghana.

Participants at the international Conference as well as oil distributors and marketers from various countries were eager to know how they could key in for supplies from the 650,000 barrel per day refinery, that is preparing to take the continent by storm.

The Ghanaian government expressed the view that dealing with Dangote refinery for petroleum import would be a better business for African nations than depending on the international market for the supply of refined petroleum products, “we will rather purchase from the Dangote Refinery due to the proximity of the refinery to Ghana and other neighbours.

The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, who was represented by Vice-President Alhaji Mahamud Bawumia, said African nations are anxiously waiting for Dangote Refinery.

The Meaning Of June 12

The Meaning Of June 12 – Simon Kolawole

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

For the record, I did not vote on June 12, 1993. Not that I did not want to vote, but the situation conspired with the circumstances to disenfranchise me: I was out of Lagos. If I was in town, though, I would have voted for Chief MKO Abiola, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Ironically, I was originally against Abiola. To be more direct, I did not like him. I saw him as a proxy for Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, the military president, and — out of spite — I had opted for Alhaji Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC). But after the TV debate between the two candidates, my heart softened, although I was still pretending to dislike him.

This piece was written by Simon Kolawole. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

My friend, Lanre Issa-Onilu, engaged me in a long argument, challenging me to list areas where I would say Tofa was better than Abiola. I lost the argument. I decided to vote for Abiola. He would go on to win the election convincingly but he was denied his mandate. The events leading to the annulment looked well orchestrated. On June 11, a court ruled that the election should not hold, despite the electoral law ousting the jurisdiction of courts. On election day, NRC accused Abiola of breaking the law by “campaigning”. He had worn an “agbada” that had SDP’s horse logo to his polling unit. SDP argued that the image on Abiola’s dress was that of a donkey, not a horse.

We thought it was a joke until events started unfolding, culminating in the dramatic annulment. Nigeria dissolved into chaos, death and destruction — and the ensuing political impasse lasted for at least five years, not counting the pain, hurt, bitterness and resentment that still live in some people’s hearts 25 years after. With Babangida having exhausted his cards in his unending transition programme full of deceit, he left power in a hurry on August 26, 1993 — a day earlier than planned — and put up the smokescreen of an interim government that paved the way for the ascendancy of Gen. Sani Abacha, who turned out to be the most sadistic ruler in Nigeria’s history.

Why was June 12 so significant? For one, it confounded us. Context matters. Religious acrimony and tension was perhaps at its zenith at the time. The differences between Christians and Muslims had taken a highly hostile, political turn when Nigeria became a full member of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) in 1986 under Babangida. Christians continuously accused him of harbouring an Islamisation agenda, an allegation he denied. The polity was polluted and tense. Muslim/Christian clashes became a way of life in northern Nigeria: from Kafanchan to Tafawa Balewa, Zangon-Kataf, Kano, Zaria and even the usually peaceful Ilorin, the land of my birth.

It is safe to say it was under Babangida that the Muslim/Christian animosity became overly entrenched in our polity. When Babangida appointed new service chiefs in August 1990, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) pointed out that all the service chiefs were Muslims — Gen. Sani Abacha (chief of defence staff); Major General Salihu Ibrahim (army); AVM Nuraini Yussuff (air force); Rear Admiral Murtala Nyako (navy); and Alhaji Aliyu Attah (inspector-general of police). This, CAN alleged, was one of the conditionalities for Nigeria’s full membership of OIC. Indeed, the religious tension in the country was touchable. A little spark and there would be an inferno.

Meanwhile, in Kaduna state, Sheikh Ibrahim El Zakzaky, the Shi’ite leader, was heightening tension and disturbing public peace with his brand of Islam, but he was somewhat contained by the military. Then in May 1992, a horrendous religious violence broke out in Zangon-Kataf LGA with hundreds killed. The Justice Benedict Okadigbo tribunal, set up by Babangida to probe the carnage, sentenced Major-Gen. Zamani Lekwot and six others to death for “culpable homicide”. They were all Christians. CAN said Babangida only took action because Christians finally “defended” themselves, asking why nobody was punished for the previous clashes when Christians suffered heavy losses.

The death sentences and other religious troubles were still hanging when the June 12 election came calling. The idea of a Muslim/Muslim ticket was unthinkable. You can understand the crisis in Abiola’s hands about picking a running mate. Conventional wisdom was for him to pick a northern Christian to “balance” the ticket. His dilemma was compounded by a historical Christian perception of him as a bigot who used his newspaper to support Nigeria’s membership of OIC. Christians had been asked to boycott Concord in the heat of the OIC controversy in 1986. Faced with the religion dilemma, Abiola toyed with picking a Christian to appease the Nigerian Christians.

CAN even offered a list of northern Christians for consideration — Paschal Bafyau, Ishaya Audu, Chris Abashiya and Bala Takaya, etc. Problem was: they were no political heavyweights. In reality, to pull northern votes, Abiola had to pick either Amb. Babagana Kingibe, who had tightly fought for the SDP ticket with him, or Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who had come third in the primary and aligned with Abiola in the run-off to defeat Kingibe. Both were Muslims. Abiola eventually picked Kingibe despite the risk with Christians north and south. Incredibly, the distrust and bigotry went out of the window and Abiola coasted home to victory. This is the Nigeria of my dream.

Abiola did so well nationwide at the poll. He even defeated Tofa in his home base in Kano, winning nine of the 16 northern states then. In my opinion, Igbo pulled one hell of a surprise. Despite having virtually nothing to benefit from SDP, despite the Muslim/Muslim ticket, despite the fact that an Igbo, Dr. Sylvester Ugoh, was the NRC vice-presidential candidate, despite the age-old animosity towards Yoruba over the civil war, south-easterners voted impressively for Abiola, giving him 49.45% of their votes. Tofa, with an Igbo son on his ticket, got just 50.54%. Remember, also, that NRC controlled three of the four states in the south-east. This is the Nigeria that I love.

Why was June 12 so significant? One of its biggest miracles, if you ask me, was that it threw up Abiola as an unlikely hero. Here was an establishment man having a “Road to Damascus” experience. If any politician was going to stand up to the military, it was never going to be Abiola. He was expected to simply lick his wounds and move on. Babangida was his friend. But he became a new man and insisted on his mandate. He was clamped into detention; his wife was assassinated; his businesses paralysed. Yet he refused to give up or give in. Nigerians also showed remarkable resistance to iron rule. Over 300 demonstrators were killed by soldiers in one day!

The struggle for June 12 was, regrettably, abandoned by most members of the political class who felt it was Abiola’s problem. Regrettably, too, the narrative down south was that it was annulled because northerners hated southerners. At some point, I analysed the results. When I saw the number of votes Abiola got in the north, I told myself northerners do not hate southerners. That was when I began to make a distinction between the ruling elite and the people on the streets. It has shaped my worldview ever since. The trouble with Nigeria is not one religion against the other, or one ethnic group against the other; it is the mindless manipulation of ethno-religious sentiments by the elite.

Tragically, President Olusegun Obasanjo, the ultimate beneficiary of Abiola’s struggle and sacrifice, blatantly refused to honour him or give June 12 its place in history. He scoffed at the idea of June 12 becoming Democracy Day. Yet, if Abiola had not insisted on his mandate, if he had not been arrested and detained, if he had not died in government custody, Obasanjo would not have been president. President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua did not honour Abiola or celebrate June 12 either. President Goodluck Jonathan, to his credit, finally recognised Abiola, but his choice of monument did not cut it. He also fell short of declaring June 12 as Democracy Day. But, at least, he made an effort.

God bless President Muhammadu Buhari for finally according June 12 its rightful place in our democracy. The historic election needed official recognition. The winner of the mandate needed official acknowledgment. We needed closure. We needed to stop running from our shadow. Buhari has done what others before him failed to do. I have heard a legion of critics accuse Buhari of playing politics. If it’s politics, it’s beautiful politics. I hope Buhari will play more of this brand of politics. We condemned those who refused to honour the heroes our democracy; we are now condemning Buhari who has chosen to honour them. That’s the way life goes.

In sum, June 12 means more than Abiola to me. If you confuse June 12 with Abiola, you are missing the point. June 12 brought out the best in us. It showed what is possible in spite of our sharp differences and fragile fraternity. June 12 was not perfect, but it was peaceful, fair and devoid of hijacking of ballot boxes. The figures were credible and realistic. We showed the world what Nigerians can do if given opportunity and encouragement. Sadly, the annulment destroyed key gains and denied us a golden opportunity to recalibrate our nationhood. Instead, we were re-fractured. We are struggling, till this day, to patch things up. But Nigeria will surely rise again.

AND FOUR OTHER THINGS…

BELLICOSE BELGORE

Justice Alfa Belgore, the former chief justice of Nigeria, caused some controversy on Wednesday when he said it was “illegal” for President Muhammadu Buhari to give national honour to a dead person. Belgore, who chaired the 2016 awards committee, was commenting on the GCFR awarded posthumously to Chief MKO Abiola. It is significant to note that Belgore did not quote a single provision of the law which expressly forbids giving national honours posthumously. The law is silent on it. If anything, the law gives the president discretionary powers. I think the ex-CJN is out of order to strongly condemn Buhari’s gesture without a concrete legal basis. Overruled.

THIS IS MURIC

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has asked Falz to withdraw his ‘This is Nigeria’ video — or face legal action. The video, a parody of Childish Gambino’s ‘This is America’, is viewed by MURIC as “thoughtless, insensitive and highly provocative”. MURIC said the “hate video” manifests “ethnic bias against Fulanis while it ignored the criminal activities of ethnic militia of the Middle Belt who have also massacred Fulanis and rustled their cattle in their thousands”. Fair point, just that the tone of MURIC’s protest already reveals its deep political bias which it barely disguises in any case. I just hope Falz will not be intimidated to be singing only about Ferrari and Gucci. Aluta.

OFFA ROBBERS

Senate President Bukola Saraki was poised to dominate the airwaves for the whole of last week until President Muhammadu Buhari interrupted the news cycle with the June 12 declaration. It was a needed breather for Saraki, having been circumstantially linked to the Offa bank robbery heist that claimed 33 lives, including pregnant women and policemen. He has a lot of sympathisers who believe he is being witch-hunted because of the politics of 2019 elections. Police also appear desperate to nail him. However, since many of the suspects are allegedly associated with him one way or the other, I think he has to clear his name in a court of law, politics or no politics. Essential.

AND FINALLY…

I wish Fela were alive to hear President Olusegun Obasanjo raise the alarm that President Buhari is after him. For the avoidance of doubt, Fela never liked Obasanjo, Maj. Gen Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and Chief MKO Abiola. He sang vigorously against them in the late 1970s. Even though he didn’t like Gen. Sani Abacha either, he was all too pleased when Abacha put these men in jail. “You mean say Obasanjo, Abiola and Yar’Adau fit go jail for this country?” Fela said, triumphantly. Though he never liked Buhari, who also controversially jailed him in 1984, I would have loved to hear his reaction to a “whole” Obasanjo panicking that the Buhari is coming for him! Ironic.

FIFA Announce Major Changes To The Way World Rankings Are Calculated

Featured Image

FIFA has announced that it will make changes to the way that the world rankings of international teams are calculated

The new method will add or subtracts points from a country’s total rather than averaging them over a multi-year period as it has been done

It should ensure that countries are less able to attain false rankings by winning a string of less important games or difficult games, as has long been an accusation held against FIFA’s system.

FIFA notes that the new Elo method has been used in other sports for a number of years and is even involved in calculating the women’s world rankings, with a specific version (SUM) developed especially to take into account FIFA’s considerations.

FIFA explains: “Teams gain and lose points based on their performance. The number of points gained or lost is a function of the relative strength of the opponents. Thus a weak team beating a strong team gains more points than a strong team beating a weak team. It is a fair and logical concept.”

As well as the relative strength of both teams involved, less importance will be given to friendly games when determining the rankings, while more will be given to the major tournaments. Knockout stage matches will also carry more weight than group stage games.

FIFA have also explained that teams from all over the world will now have an ‘equal chance’ of rising the rankings after the old weighting variables that favored European and South American nations has been removed.

Host nations, who do not play qualifiers, will additionally not see their ranking as badly affected as before as winning friendly matches will still add to their points tally, even if only slightly. Under the old method Russia slid down the rankings after the Confederations Cup, which had been their only competitive football since 2016 and are now the lowest ranked country at their own World Cup.
