#WorldCupWith360Nobs: Uruguay Will “Die Or Kill” To Win The World Cup – Oscar Tabarez

Featured Image

Uruguay head coach Oscar Tabarez praised the attitude of his players after they grabbed a late winner against Egypt despite an insipid performance.

Uruguay had been fancied to excel in a weak-looking Group A but they were lifeless for long spells against an Egypt side who stood up well against Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.

But Jose Gimenez headed in an 89th-minute winner from a free kick to get Tabarez’s team off to the perfect start, and the manager was delighted with the outcome.

“To win matches in this group means we will be able to progress,” said Tabarez, per BBC Sport. “We either die or we kill and the experience today will help us grow, but we can’t make too much of it.

“Sometimes the ball will go to the back of the net, sometimes it won’t but we are always looking to score. I’m very happy with the attitude of the team and how they played.”

Egypt talisman Mo Salah was declared fit on the eve of the match after recovering from a shoulder injury, but manager Hector Cuper decided not to risk his best player, with more winnable games against Russia and Saudi Arabia to come.

The Pharaohs appeared to lack a cutting edge without Salah, and Tabarez acknowledged that it would have been a tougher challenge for his defence if the Liverpool man had been playing.

“Egypt played very well, a very good game, but I imagine with Mo Salah if he had been in top form Egypt would have benefited with him on the pitch, but we will never know,” said Tabarez.

Portugal 3 Vs 3 Spain: Cristiano Ronaldo Steals The Show With An Amazing Hat-trick #WorldCupWith360nobs

Featured Image

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in Portugal’s mindblowing 3-3 draw with rivals Spain in World Cup Group B.

It was Cristiano Ronaldo’s  51st hat-trick and also  the 51st hat-trick to be scored at a World Cup

Portugal took the lead inside four minutes when Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot after appearing to fall under the challenge of club team-mate Nacho.

Costa levelled for Spain after 24 minutes when he beat Pepe in the air and showed both composure and strength in the face of covering Portuguese defenders to drill the ball past goalkeeper Rui Patricio. After being reviewed by the VAR system for Costa’s challenge on Pepe, the goal stood.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored again after 44 minutes to give Portugal a 2-1 half-time lead after a costly David De Gea error

Costa equalised for the second time after 54 minutes with a close-range header and Spain then took the lead almost immediately when Nacho drilled a superb 25-yard effort in off the post.

Portugal somehow found a way back through the incredible Ronaldo – with two minutes to go  Ronaldo completed his hat-trick with a brilliant free-kick.

The 33-year-old gave De Gea no chance with a 25-yard effort that flew into the top corner to make it 3-3.

#WorldCupWith360Nobs: Bouhaddouz Own Goal Ruins Morocco’s Start, As Iran Win 1-0

Featured Image

It was a brilliant start for the Atlas Lions of Morocco, only for a last minute own goal from Bouhaddouz to ruin their chances of sharing the spoils with Iran.

Morocco were on the front foot from the get go, getting the first chance as early as the third minute, but that went begging. They came closest in the 19th minute, when Benatia’s eight yards shot was saved by Beiranvand.

Good link up play between El Kaabi and Ziyech was another opportunity for the North Africans, but Iran’s goalie was up to the task. The final chance of the game went to the Asians in the 43rd minute, as Jahanbakhsh sent a clever ball through a disorganised Morroco back four. Azmoun picked it up and went through on goal with only Munir to beat, but he was up to the task.

The second half started the same as the first, however, both teams could not put the ball into the net. The 73rd minute was a sad one for Morocco, as one of their threats, Amrabat had to be subbed off after an injury. He was replaced with his brother.

The Atlas Lions threatened some more, but Iran’s goalie, Beiranvand played a key role in keeping them in the game.

Then came the time of woe for Morocco sub, Bouhaddouz, with just one minute left to play, Iran won a freekick.

From the free-kick a delivery is pumped into the near post and under no pressure the sub Bouhaddouz headed the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Iran barely come out of their half for the last 30 minutes but they’re getting a precious three points.

Neymar: I Am The Best In The World, As Messi And Ronaldo Are Out Of This World

Brazil star, Neymar believes he is the best player on earth, only because Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are not from this planet.

The pair have won five Ballon d’Ors a piece and are arguably at the top of the game. Neymar, who is the most expensive player in the world has been touted as a future winner of the individual award.

And the former Barcelona star admits his former teammate and Ronaldo are still ahead of him.

“The two who are above all others today are Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi,” Neymar said to Brazilian YouTube channel Desimpedidos.

“For all modesty, today I am the best player in the world – because they are from another planet.”

Neymar has twice finished third in the Ballon d’Or voting behind Ronaldo and Messi but could compete for the 2018 prize should he shine in Russia with Brazil.

Cuper: Too Risky To Have Played Salah

Featured Image

Egypt head coach, Hector Cuper said they preferred not to risk Mohamed Salah in the opening group game, with two matches still to play.

The Pharaohs lacked the bite in their attack against Uruguay, but held their own for most of the match.

However, a last minute header from Gimenez won the game for the South Americans. Nevertheless, Cuper does not regret resting Salah, with games against Russia and Saudi Arabia to consider.

“The decision is always taken by myself and the staff – especially in the case of Mo,” Cuper told a news conference.

“We were quite certain in the training session that he would be able to play. At the end of the training session, he was examined by the doctors and there was some doubt.

“If he fell or was hit by another player, we thought he might get another injury. We wanted to avoid any further injury. The odds were important.

“We decided not to take that risk. We want to be sure we can have him on top form against Russia and Saudi Arabia.”

Cuper preferred not to speculate about how Salah’s presence might have affected the result, though.

He said: “Mo Salah is an extremely important player for us. That’s beyond any shadow of a doubt – nobody can deny that.

“But I need to stress that you need to have good players but also a good team. I think Egypt are a good team.

“Perhaps if Mo had been on the pitch, the outcome would have been different. But we don’t know that. He has contributed a great deal to the team and will in future matches.”

#WorldCupWith360nobs: Uruguay Score Late Goal To Beat Egypt

Featured Image

Uruguay have won their first opening game at a World Cup since 1970 after they beat Egypt 1-0 in Yekaterinburg on Friday, in their first game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Jose Gimenez headed powerfully into the net in the 90th minute as he met Carlos Sanchez’s free-kick to give the South Americans a winning start in Russia.

Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani each squandered opportunities to clinch the points against a Pharaohs side who kept Mohamed Salah on the bench, but it was the Atletico Madrid centre-back Gimenez who proved the hero.

The result means Russia are top of Group A after their 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in the tournament’s opening game on Thursday.

Abubakar Shekau: Boko Haram Leader’s Mother Laments His ‘Very Bad’ Behaviour

Featured Image

Falmata Abubakar, the mother of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, has said she recognizes that her son has “brought problem to many people” but she still loves him just as every mother does her son.

Speaking with the Voice of Africa (VOA) in the village of Shekau, Yobe State, Falmata said she hadn’t seen Shekau for 15 years, and wondered where she could find him to convince him to change his ways.

“I don’t know if he’s alive or dead. I don’t know,” she said adding that “It’s only God who knows. For 15 years I haven’t seen him. Since Shekau met with Mohammed Yusuf, I didn’t see him again.”

According to Falmata, Shekau left the village as a boy to continue his Islamic education in Maiduguri, a centre of religious studies for hundreds of years.

shekau is alive
Abubakar Shekau

Shekau was an almajiri. In the generations-old tradition, almajirai are sent off by their parents to study the Quran in schools locally known as a tsangaya, where a teacher coaches the dozens, sometimes hundreds, of male students to memorize the entire Quran.

Almajirai beg on the streets for food, and it is believed that Shekau did the same. At some point in his studies, Shekau, according to his mother, met Mohammed Yusuf, the founder of Boko Haram, who condemned Western education as sinful. Falmata says her son was brainwashed.

“I am praying for God to show him the good way,” she told the broadcaster.

Falmata Abubakar added:

“Yes, he’s my son and every mother loves her son, but we have different characters. He brought a lot of problem to many people.”

“He just took his own character and went away. This is not the character I gave him. I don’t know what this type of behavior is. It’s only God who knows.”

“Where can I meet him to tell him that these things he is doing is very bad?”

Eid-el-Fitr: “Stop Glorifying Thieves” – Buhari Tells Nigerians

Featured Image

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians to overcome greed and stop “glorifying thieves” but treat them with disdain for bringing hardships to others.

The President said this in his Eid-el-Fitr message to mark the end of the Ramadan fasting period.

Buhari lamented that selfishness and greed have overcome people’s conscience so much that they don’t have moral inhibitions in the pursuit of their greed.

“Religion should be the moral compass for all believers in their public and personal lives,” the president said, adding that “if people allow the teachings of their religions to influence their conducts, problems such as corruption, which diverts public funds to private pockets, would have been eliminated in the society.”

He regretted, however, that “selfishness and greed have overcome people’s conscience so much that they don’t have moral inhibitions in the pursuit of their greed.”

“I always wonder why any true believer, be they politicians, civil servants or businessmen, would seek to make profits from the misfortunes of others.’’

He thus urged ordinary Nigerians to stop glorifying thieves by treating them with disdain for bringing hardships to others.

Buhari expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their patience and assured that their sacrifices would not be in vain.

The Nigerian supreme leader also said that reforming a country that had been pushed to the brink of near decay on account of corruption, was always going to come with pains.

Yearning For Super Eagles Of 94

Featured Image

Yearning For Super Eagles Of 94 By Muhammad Ajah

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

How Nigeria can get back the football squad she had of 1994 through 1996 is part of my worries about the Super Eagles.

From the onset, I must confess that I have nearly lost interest in the Nigerian football team.

This piece was written by Muhammad Ajah and was first published on Nigerian Guardian. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

I have not been able to figure out what could be responsible for the decline of the Super Eagles.

If not for patriotism and the inborn love for the Pele’s toy, I would have stopped watching football matches.

To get relief, I sometimes prefer to watch matches of foreign clubs than our local tournaments.

Yet, though not a fan of any, I belong to every serious club but never a diehard for any.

That was me when Nigerian clubs and tournaments were interesting. Can our past football history return?

Sometimes, I feel that the politics surrounding the choice of players is responsible; politics in different ways.

Either because in the course of choosing the players, the harmful idea of federal character is placed on board or the consideration of godfathersim/who-knows-who comes to play.

Or corruption is responsible in the sense, as alleged, that players have to pay immediately to be selected or sign pacts to forfeit parts of their match allowances.

It is bad and whatever is responsible for this, I think the Federal Government has the responsibility to sanitize the system in the glass house.

I have never wept for Nigerian football like that of France 98 when Nigeria lost woefully on June 8 to Denmark by 4-1 in the round 16.

This followed the loss to Paraguay 3-1 on June 24 at the stage matches. Nigeria had earlier defeated Spain 3-2 on June 13, defeated Bulgaria 1-0 on June 19.

Hopes were very high for Nigeria to defeat Denmark. I prayed for the Eagles after the first and second goals hit Peter Rufai’s net in the third and 13th minutes.

I still prayed that Nigeria could make it in the second half as usual until hopes were dashed by the third and fourth goals in the 60th and 76th minutes by Ebbe Sand and Thomas Helveg respectively.

I took to memory every bit of the happenings in 98 Super Eagles outing. And since that year, Nigeria has been unable to build a strong team.

Any hope for Nigeria in Russia 2018 with Croatia on June 16, Iceland on June 22 and Argentina on June 26 at the group D stage?

It cannot be that Nigeria has no qualified players. Nigerian players are doing very well in many renowned teams across the world.

If this is unarguable, why is it difficult to assemble these Nigerian stars to form a formidable Nigerian football team as other countries with history in the game have maintained.

What will it take Nigeria to study the way the South Americas have sustained their supremacy over the round leather.

I know that reading or even learning culture in Nigeria is low, but football is a game that is more practical than theoretical. There are all assurances that Nigeria can build a strong football team that can last long, if all the factors enumerated above are arrested or eliminated.

I dearly yearn for the Nigerian Super Eagles of 1994. I feel for those days of Rashid Yekini, Steven Keshi, Jay Jay Okocha, Emmanuel Amunike, Daniel Amokashi, Sampson Siasia, Victor Ikpeba, George Finidi, Tijani Babangida, Augustine Egwavon, name them.

Those were the days Nigerian matches thrilled the world and many non-football lovers would spare the time to watch Nigerian matches.

Those were the days I would not eat, even when hungry, until I watched the last action in any Nigerian match.

Those were the days I used to conduct a personal prayer for the Eagles before any of their matches.

Those were the days that if the Eagles lost a match, one would be convinced that they actually did play the game.

And those were the days Nigerian footballers were selected/appointed to represent Nigeria on merits and they were cared for. There was less or no wicked conspiracy against them.

There was no compromise over their entitlements. Unity and patriotism were their watchwords.

And in 1996, the team, strengthened with some powerful football magicians like Kanu Nwankwo, conquered the world at Atlanta. Many of these Nigerian super stars are still alive.

Some of them, though retired and not tired, have been contributing positively to the development of the younger footballers.

The question is: With such vast experienced game masters, why are the new breeds not performing or replacing them.

A reported problem is that some of these retired big players have influenced the team formation negatively because they insist that their blood brothers or relatives make the Super Eagles squad, thus causing confusion during the selection processes.

And I ask: Must everybody in a family be footballers? This means that some of the players are imposed on the coach or technical adviser.

As a lover of the game and a player too, who knows what would have been of me when as a student in Egypt, I had some opportunities to play in the top Egyptian teams in the early 1990s when Nigerian football stars like Emmanuel Amunike and John Utaka, amongst others, kept the Nigerian flag high in the Egyptian soccer leagues.

As a member of the Foreign Students team which had friendly matches with the Egyptian football clubs, few of us were often invited for trainings by the clubs.

But it was a herculean task or an impossibility to combine studies with professional football in the land of the Pharaohs.

I can still remember a colleague, Abubakar Haidara from Mali and Ibrahim Mujambera from Malawi who accepted to play for clubs. Haidara played for the junior team of Al-Ahly club and later played for his country.

The Mandela Cup that used to be hosted by the Egyptian authorities for African students in Egypt seemed to be a property for Nigerians because the Super Eagles in Egypt then were often the champions.

Though captured in my book My prayers, hopes for Nigeria, I discovered something strange while in Egypt, about how Africans take Nigeria and Nigerians.

Whenever there is a football match between Nigeria and any other African country, all the students from other African countries would boldly not support Nigeria.

Even as they could not affect any change in the course of the match, they colluded against Nigeria.

Instances were whenever there were competitions between Nigeria and any other country within the students sport activities.

The Mandela Cup was a handy example. No one doubted what Nigeria stood for in football then.

So, African students would gang up against Nigerians, despite the fact that Nigerian team must have its way.

Really, I was disturbed by this attitude. It caused skirmishes between my friends and me.

But gradually I became used to it and Nigeria still remained a giant in whatever contest we undertook on behalf of the country over there.

Besides, I took time to find out the reasons behind such acrimony towards my country by my African brothers and sisters.

I got the answer in Nigerian people feel too big. They think they are everything.

They think they know everything. They say they are Giant of Africa.

Yes, we sometimes feel too big to learn. But anything that requires talent and practice can only be sustained with practice. It is said that practice makes perfect.

Let the administrators of Nigeria’s football learn why the South Americas have remained superior over the round leather since memorable times.

I believe the Super Eagles of 1994 can be built, if corruption, nepotism and frivolities in the sector can be fought to a standstill.

#WorldCupWith360nobs: Kylian Mbappe Admits Brazil, Germany And Spain Are Ahead Of France

Featured Image

Kylian Mbappe believes France have what it takes to win the title in Russia if they all stick together – even if he concedes they are not favourites for glory.

France start their campaign in Group C against Australia in Kazan on Saturday, with the 19-year-old Mbappe and the 21-year-old Ousmane Dembele supporting Antoine Griezmann up front.

“We have young team, yes, but if you look at it, you see we play at Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Juventus, Manchester. Take any big European team, there’s at least one Frenchman,” PSG striker Mbappe told sports daily L’Equipe on Friday.

“Of course we are young but several players already have plenty of experience: Raphael Varane won several (four) Champions League titles with Real, Samuel Umtiti is in the starting 11 at Barca, Paul Pogba played four great seasons at Juve. Youth is an excuse without being an excuse.

“I don’t like to talk about our age. Either you can, or you cannot.”
.

“Let’s face it, Brazil, Spain and Germany are a little ahead of us. But on one competition you never know what can happen. We have potential, but if you look at everyone’s trophy list, ours fits on one piece of paper,” he said.

The squad’s mindset, however, can be a big boost for France, according to Mbappe.

“I know the players and nobody is playing for themselves. Everyone wants to win and when you want that, you are ready to make sacrifices for your team mates,” he explained.

“We are a new generation that has just started blooming. Being a true team, what does that mean? Stick together, like each other, being able to run for your team mate.

“Then there is the work of the coach but we have a great coach, there is no worries there,” he said of Didier Deschamps, who captained France to the World Cup title in 1998.

“It has always been my ambition to work in England,” Bielsa told the club’s official website.

“I have had several opportunities to do so during my career, however I have always felt it was important to wait for the right project to come along and so when a club with Leeds United’s history made me an offer, it was impossible to turn down,” he told the club’s website.

World Cup Gp B 7:00pm Friday 15th June Fisht Olympic Stadium

Group B has a massive clash as Spain take on Euro 2016 winners Portugal.

Spain went all the way in 2010 for their first and only success in the quadrennial competition, while their opponents head into the tournament with their triumphant Euro 2016 campaign still fresh in the memory.

Just one day before the World Cup, Julen Lopetegui was sacked over the manner of his Real Madrid appointment and Fernando Hierro was appointed

“The players are excited, they want this challenge. It’s a challenge for everyone. We have no time to dwell,” he said.

“I know they’re going to give 100 per cent. In a World Cup nobody gives anything away. We all know what this means and our responsibilities.”, Spain new coach Fernando Hierro said

However, Spain’s managerial change will not affect their performance in their opening ‘Iberian derby’ match, Portugal’s coach Fernando Santos believes.

“It is Spain and Portugal,” he said. “Spain has played like that for 10 years, I don’t think there are going to be any surprises. What is important is the team that plays, and the strategy and no more than that.”

“Spain are fantastic opponents. They are highly qualified with a kind of game that has been consolidated over the years and (it) won’t change that radically.”

  • Head to head

Neighbours Spain and Portugal has played each other 36 times, with Spain will exactly half with 18 victories.

Their recent record has been fairly even, with Portugal claiming two wins and Spain three. They have no played each other since Spain won 4-2 on penalties, after a goalless 120 minutes, in the Euro 2012 semi-finals.

  • Match Statistics

Portugal and Spain’s only previous World Cup encounter was in 2010, with Spain winning 1-0 in the round of 16 thanks to a David Villa goal.

Portugal and Spain’s four encounters at major tournaments (World Cup + Euro) have produced only four goals.

Portugal will attempt to become the fourth nation to win back-to-back European Championship and World Cup tournaments after West Germany (Euro 1972, World Cup 1974), France (World Cup 1998, Euro 2000) and Spain (Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, Euro 2012).

None of Spain’s last 14 games at the World Cup have ended in a draw (W10 L4). They’ve lost three of their last six group games (W3), after winning each of their previous seven.

Spain had the joint-best defensive record in the 2018 European World Cup qualifiers alongside England, conceding only three goals in 10 games. They were also one of four teams to remain unbeaten – along with Belgium, England and Germany – winning nine of their 10 games.

  • Portugal possible starting lineup:

Patricio; Soares, Pepe, Fernandes, Guerreiro; B.Silva, Carvalho, Joao Mario, Martins; Ronaldo, Silva

  • Spain possible starting lineup:

De Gea; Odriozola, Pique, Ramos, Alba; Alcantara, Busquets, Iniesta; Isco, Costa, Silva

World Cup Gp B 4:00pm Friday 15th June Krestovsky Stadium

Morocco take on Iran in Group B of the 2018 World Cup with both countries aiming to get their first world cup three points at the Saint Petersburg Stadium.

Spain and Portugal take up the other spots in the group, leaving Morocco coach Herve Renard and Iran’s Carlos Queiroz both knowing that three points are likely to be crucial should they want to muster any sort of serious challenge for second spot.

Morocco were the only team not to concede a single goal in the third round of African qualifying, while Iran kept nine straight clean sheets in AFC qualification, letting in just two during their final game against Syria.

Iran striker Alireza Jahanbakhsh finished as last season’s Eredivisie top scorer with 21 goals for AZ Alkmaar. Morocco playmaker Hakim Ziyech – who plays his club football for Ajax – contributed the most assists in the Dutch league with 21.

This tournament represents Morocco’s fifth appearance at a World Cup and the country have only been able to progress from the opening stages once in their history, reaching the last 16 in 1986 before suffering defeat to West Germany

Iran’s main ambition will be to secure only their second victory in the history of the tournament. Iran’s first and last win in the competition came in extraordinary circumstances when Team Melli infamously beat the United States in France 20 years ago.

  • Head to head

Morocco and Iran have never faced each other in an official competitive match.

  • Team news

Iran will be without the suspended Saeid Ezatolahi, while there are fitness doubts surrounding Mehdi Taremi and Askhan Dejagah.

Morocco will be hoping Nabil Dirar is passed fit. Dirar missed Morocco’s last two friendlies against Slovakia and Estonia due to a calf injury.

  • Morocco possible starting lineup:

Mohamedi; Amrabat, Benatia, Saiss, Hakimi; Boussoufa, Ahmadi; Harit, Belhanda, Ziyech; Kaabi

  • Iran possible starting lineup:

Beiranvand; Rezaeian, Cheshmi, Pouraliganji, Mohammadi; Safi, Shojaei; Jahanbakhsh, Ansarifard, Taremi; Azmoun

World Cup Gp A 1:00pm Friday 15th June Central Stadium, Yekaterinburg

The first of today’s three World Cup games sees Egypt take on Uruguay in Yekaterinburg’s Ekaterinburg Stadium.

All the focus in the build-up to the game has been on Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and his fitness level ahead of the game

Egypt have sweating on the Liverpool forward’s fitness after he suffered a shoulder injury in the Champions League final last month but there was some encouragement for Hector Cuper’s side as Salah trained with the team on Wednesday.

Salah has recovered and will play tomorrow. And nothing prevents him from competing for the title of the Golden Boot,” he told his pre-match press conference. “I assure you 100 per cent that he will be with us tomorrow, barring unforeseen circumstances, Egypt manager Hector Cuper said

“Doctors are giving him the option. If he does decide to play he will have full guarantee [about his condition] and I am sure that he will be fine.

“If we see at the last minute that there is an issue then we will see if it can be resolved, but certainly he does not feel afraid.”

Uruguay has won the only previous meeting between the two countries 2-0 in 2006.

Uruguay’s source of inspiration will come from Barcelona striker Luis Suarez, and PSG’s Edison Cavani.

Cavani was the top-scorer in South American qualifying for the World Cup with 10 goals, while Suarez has five World Cup goals to his name, including two against England in 2014.

With World Cup hosts Russia thrashing Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening game the day before, The Pharaohs and The Sky Blue both face a tough test in their first game of the tournament.

Match statistics

  • Uruguay are unbeaten against African opposition at the World Cup (W1 D2).
  • This is Egypt’s third World Cup appearance, their first since 1990. Their last game in the competition dates back to 21 June 1990, when they lost 1-0 against England in the group stage.
  • Egypt are so far winless at the World Cup, drawing two and losing two of their four games. In fact, no African team has played as many games in the competition without winning a single one.
  • Uruguay were the first World Cup winners, in 1930. They also won on their second participation in 1950. However, they have progressed past the round of 16 only once in their last six appearances (4th place in 2010).
