Nigeria vs Iceland
World Cup Gp D 4:00pm Friday 22nd June Volgograd Arena
Iceland will be hoping to build on their impressive World Cup opening round game Vs Argentina when they take on Nigeria in Volgograd.
Having stifled Lionel Messi and Argentina, Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side can put themselves in a good position to qualify from Group D if they compound Nigeria’s misery.
Nigeria know anything less than beating Iceland will leave them with a very hard task to avoid elimination after defeat against Croatia on Saturday
If Nigeria lose, they would become the third African side after Morocco and Egypt to be dumped out after just two group matches.
Head coach Gernot Rohr hit back at a reporter when asked if a loss might see his job on the line.
“We will not lose this game so I do not answer this question. You can ask this question again after the game, but I will tell you we will not lose,” he said.
Iceland are expected to be without Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who picked up a muscle injury against Argentina and is unlikely to recover in time for this match.
Alfred Finnbogason is his side’s form player, scoring in each of his last three international appearances, although Iceland have failed to win any of those games.
As for Nigeria Ogenyi Onazi will be hoping for a recall after being dropped for the opener.
With goals required for Nigeria to get the much required victory, Ahmed Musa could also be handed a start, although to do so he would likely have to usurp either Victor Moses, Alex Iwobi or Odion Ighalo in the starting lineup.
Possible starting lineup:
Nigeria – Uzoho; Shehu, Troost-Ekong, Balogun, Idowu; Ndidi, Mikel, Onazi; Moses, Ighalo, Iwobi
Iceland – Halldorsson; Saevarsson, Arnason, R Sigurdsson, Magnusson; Hallfredsson, Gunnarsson; G Sigurdsson, Bjarnason, Gislason; Finnbogason
Nigeria 2 Vs 1 Iceland
