Police Rescue Mikel Obi’s Father From Kidnappers’ Den

The Enugu State Police Command has disclosed that it has rescued Pa Michael Obi, the father of Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, from the den of kidnappers on Monday evening.

It was gathered that Chief Obi who was abducted on June 29 along Enugu- Makurdi road was rescued inside a forest in Udi local government area of the state on Monday afternoon.

The Spokesman of the Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, made this known in a statement entitled ‘Enugu State Police Command rescue Pa Michael Obi father of Mikel Obi’.

Mikel’s father, according to the police, was on his way from Jos, Plateau State, in a grey coloured Toyota Prado sports utility vehicle, with registration number MUS 604 CG, when he was kidnapped.

The kidnappers demanded N10m as ransom from Obi’s family, according to Amaraizu.

However, at about 2:00 pm on Monday, operatives ‎of the Ninth Mile Division of the Enugu State Police Command rescued Obi and his driver in a forest in the Udi area of Enugu.

Amaraizu said the rescue followed a gun battle between the police and the kidnappers, who escaped after being overpowered by the security agents.

Speaking on what happened, Amaraizu said, “The Enugu State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, through its operatives of the Ninth Mile Division, on Monday July 2, 2018, at about 2:30 pm, rescued Pa Michael Obi and his driver, one Ishaya John, unhurt in Egede Udi forest, in Enugu State along old Egede-Affa road, Enugu.

“They were rescued hale and hearty and Pa Michael Obi and the driver have rejoined their family.

“Pa Michael Obi and and his driver were abducted along Markurdi-Enugu road on June 29, 2018, in the afternoon, on his way from Jos in his grey coloured Toyota Prado vehicle with registration number MUS 604CG and taken to an unknown destination through the thick forest part of the area.

“The abductors started calling to demand a ransom of N10 million before the operatives, acting on intelligence information, swooped on them, after which a gun duel ensued which forced the hoodlums to abandon their victims inside the forest and they were promptly rescued.”‎

“In his reaction, Pa Michael Obi extolled the response and efforts of the police which led to their rescue.

“He thanked the Commissioner of Police, Danmallam Mohammed, and his operatives insisting that he is happy with the operatives’ performance.” ‎

“I am alive and healthy. I thank the commissioner of police and the police operatives on their efforts which led to our rescue.”

360Spotlight: Have You Seen The GLO Commercial by SO&U Everyone is Talking About?

Featured Image

A peculiar thing about us as Africans is our passion. It shows in literally everything we do; our dance, our talk, and of course our football. The beautiful thing is that we are not afraid or shy to express, indulge and enjoy our passion. Perhaps that is why the GLO ‘Indulge Your Passion’ ad hits home.

Set to connect with the world cup season, the ad shows us what we love most about our dance, our energetic moves and most of all our facial expression when we dance.

In our facial expression, you can almost see tales of our history, our joy and passion. Perhaps that is what makes African dance beautiful and interesting to watch. It’s always an all or nothing situation, you either pour it all out on the dance floor or you don’t. You either go big or you go home

Just when we think we’ve had enough, the ad by creative powerhouse, SO&U Limited, draws a connection between our dance and our football. It easily wins hearts.

The connection was well woven because like on the dance floor, when we are on the field, we pour it all out, we succumb to our fear and passion.

In spite of our loses, we don’t back out, perhaps because we don’t know how to. Though we have never won a world cup, we come out every season, and play with so much energy and passion.

It takes great insight to see and draw such a connection especially when we didn’t even think there was one, but to capture the heat, passion and energy that we are about takes hard work and dedication.

To see SO&U do this for GLO is an indication that they invest in finding creative solutions that resonate with target audiences.

Here are some screen clips from the GLO commercial

Inter Milan Confirm Signing Of Lazio Defender Stefan De Vrij

Featured Image

Stefan De Vrij has joined Inter Milan on a five-year deal, ending four years with Lazio.

The centre-half made 36 Serie A appearances for Lazio last season, scoring six times.

“Inter announces that they have completed a football contract with the player Stefan De Vrij with effect from 1 July 2018 and expires on 30 June 2023,” a statement on the club’s official website reads.

“Inter is now ready to welcome De Vrij. Welcome Stefan, good luck for this new Nerazzurri adventure!”

Stefan De Vrij memorably conceded a penalty for fouling Mauro Icardi on the last day of the 2017-18 season, an incident that directly contributed to Inter qualifying for the Champions League at Lazio’s expense.

“It was destiny. All players are professionals, I don’t think he fouled me on purpose,” Inter captain Icardi said to Mediaset Premium. “He tried to stop me scoring, it was just destiny.

#WorldCupWith360nobs: Denmark Boss Age Hareide Speaks On ‘Cruel’ Loss To Croatia

Featured Image

Denmark head coach Age Hareide has accepted that his country’s situation is ‘just the way it is’ after they were cruelly knocked out of the World Cup by Croatia

Croatia ran out 3-2 winners on penalties over Denmark, despite the best efforts of Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel – who saved three penalties on the evening.

Goals in the opening four minutes from Mathias Jorgensen and an equaliser from Mario Mandzukic gave us early drama, and there was also drama at the end of the match when Schmeichel saved a penalty in extra time.

However, despite his Man of the Match performance, Croatia were the better side in the penalty shootout and saw themselves wrap up the victory.

Sadly Denmark will now return home, and their manager has reflected on what could have been.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Hareide told reporters (per the Belfast Telegraph): “We could have progressed if those taking the penalties had done better, but that’s just the way it is.

“Lasse Schone, he normally does it for Ajax; Nicolai Jorgensen, he normally does it for Feyenoord and Christian Eriksen normally scores for the national team. But it didn’t work out today.

“There is research showing that your adrenaline and your stress is just as high as when people are in a war zone when you take a penalty.

“We had a wonderful keeper in Kasper Schmeichel, but it didn’t help.”

Mohamed Salah has signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool, keeping him at the club for the next five years.

Mohamed Salah’s record-breaking first season at Liverpool has led to him being linked with Real Madrid.

“I think this news can be seen for what it is; rewarding a person who performed and contributed greatly for the team and the club last season,” manager Jurgen Klopp told Liverpool’s website.

“It demonstrates two things very clearly also — his belief in Liverpool and our belief in him.

“We want world-class talent to see they have a home at Anfield where they can fulfil all their professional dreams and ambitions — we are working hard together to achieve this.

“When someone like Mo Salah commits and says this place is my home now, it speaks very loudly I think.

“Equally, our commitment to him says we see his value and want him to grow even more and get even better within our environment.”

Salah scored 44 goals in 52 appearances for Liverpool last season following his £36.9 million transfer from Roma.

Wilson Oruma Finally Breaks Silence On Loss Of N2 Billion To Fraudsters

A former Golden Eaglets captain and Super Eagles midfielder, Wilson Oghenekevwe Oruma, has for the first time broken the silence on his travail in the hands of fraudsters, who duped him of about N2 billion in his bid to establish himself after retiring from active football.

Earlier this year, it was gathered that Oruma suffered a relapse of the emotional disorder that bugged him six years ago after he was reportedly defrauded by an unknown pastor and some fake oil businessmen.

The midfielder, who once dragged the number 10 position with Austin Jay Jay Okocha while playing for Super Eagles of Nigeria, was said to have been broke as he also suffered a mental relapse of some sort, after he was lured into a fake oil business in December 2012 in which he invested a whopping sum of money without proper consultation after he retired from football.‎

Duped Of N1.2Billion, Wilson Oruma Suffers Emotional Disorder As Ex-Teammates Rally Support

However, the former footballer has pleaded with those behind his travail to consider his condition and return his money.

“This is my first time of speaking with any journalist on this,” Oruma told The Guardian at his Park INN Hotel in St. Petersburg shortly before he departed for Nigeria.

“It is true that I lost all my savings to some people, who turned out to be fraudsters. I have read several stories in the media since then. Those stories did not emanate from me. They quoted different amount, which is not correct. I lost close to N2 billion.”

“The most painful aspect of it all was the fact that some of my relations were involved in the deal. You can imagine losing such huge amount of money to people you trusted. I pray for them to have a human heart and return my money, even if it is part of it. That is my prayer every day, and I know that one day, the hand of God will torch their hearts,” he stated.

Nollywood: Sold-Out Culture & Other Stories – Noble Igwe

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

It took a while to decide if I was going to write this article or just shelf it. I’m not certain why I had thought it belonged on the shelf but a recent conversation with O.C Ukeje and Seyi Babatope at the waiting room of Accelerate TV helped me make up my mind.

This piece was written by Noble Igwe. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

I do not think that I am an old man, but I belong to the privileged few who saw “Living in Bondage” when it graced the shelves of many homes and movie rental centres. To many of us, it is the benchmark for many Nigerian movies years after. It could be argued that Nollywood has produced other movies better than ‘Living in bondage’, but you cannot deny, that it came out at a time when cinema culture was non-existent in Nigeria, and till date I dare say no Nigerian movie has been able to have the same impact.

Yhup, Sue me.

Perhaps I feel this way because it sits as one of the very first decent works in Nollywood, it was well told and perfectly played out.

Nollywood: Sold-Out Culture & Other Stories - Noble Igwe
African movies that come out of Nigeria and Ghana are the craze these days. The movies, which have soap-opera type themes are particularly popular among South Florida Caribbean’s population. (Michael Laughlin/South Florida Sun-Sentinel/MCT)

In those days, movies were sold on VCRs, and they were subsequently followed by the sleeker versions, VCDs. But with piracy and illegal video clubs on every street of Aba and Onitsha, it was almost impossible for movie makers to make any money and there was dire need for a more structured system. Movie producers needed to recoup money on their investment.

Thus modern cinema came and that provided an avenue for Nollywood movies to be shown on big screens and reach a wider audience, this new movie distribution system was the magic wand the movie makers needed. They could control movie viewership perfectly. The Cinemas provided movie markers the opportunity to premiere their movies properly with the cast and crew just like its done in most developed parts of the world and also lured non -traditional movie markers to Nollywood and changed the game. With a vibrant social media audience and more cinemas in major cities across Nigeria, Nollywood grew to become a Nigerian export within Africa and the world over.

We went from the Nollywood of Ossy Affason, Emmalex Associate, Kas-Vid international, Nek Video Links, OGD Pictures and OJ International to Adrey Silva, koga Studios, Golden Effects Pictures and Denzoit. New names started popping as producers such as Kunle Afolayan, Mildred Ogwo, Emem Isong, Okey Ezugwu, Tchidi Tchikere and Charles Novia to mention a few started changing the face of Nollywood as storylines gradually changed from ‘Patience Ozokwor poisoning Pete Edochie’s son with the help of Sam Loco so that said son would inherit her husband’s brother’s property’. I hope you didn’t get dizzy reading that because I did while writing that. All our movies had the same story line.

It was a welcome development and cinema goers across Africa embraced Nollywood completely. Then the likes of AY got into the movie business and took it up to a whole new level of extra by assembling star studded crews in ’30 Days in Atlanta’ and his style of movies did not only sell out in cinemas, it also got him a spot in the 2017 Guinness book of records as the movie with the highest gross in the territories of Bollywood, Nollywood and Hollywood. A record he broke with his follow up movie ‘A trip to Jamaica’ and the figures I believe encouraged non-traditional film makers to get involved in Nollywood. Wild right? But Nollywood was just getting warmed up.

Taking a leaf off the AY Productions page, on the 16th of December 2016, Ebonylife films, went to cinema with a star-studded crew of veterans and new actors with ‘The Wedding party’ and till date, the movie can be argued to be the most talked about movie in recent times.

The wedding party 1, packed out movie theaters for months unending, had folks talking and trended on social media for months and as if that wasn’t enough, it brought a movie marriage to reality in the case of Nigerian sweethearts Banky W and Adesuwa Etomi. It became the movie to beat, and birthed a monster.

This unmatched success gave birth to the new set of producers, ‘The Sold-out producers’.

I have continued to observe the newest trend in Nollywood and this is how it works.

  • Take a break from acting
  • Select people on social media with a good number of following
  • Put them in the movie
  • Pay little or no attention to story line (As long as Nigerians see their faves it’s all good right?)
  • Have them sell tickets at the cinema (Fans would be ecstatic for a selfie)
  • Post ‘Sold Out’ on Instagram
  • The End.

We have a new Nollywood out there and if you are paying attention you’ll agree that we have producers posting ‘Sold Out’ for movies that no one is talking about.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that these movies are not sold out, but let’s agree that these movies are sold out only because social media influencers are selling tickets to their fans who are looking for pictures ops with little or no interest in the actual movies.

We have gradually started forgetting the actors we loved without knowing their numbers of followers, most actors are no longer known for their acting or their role in a movie just as most new movies are not interested in a well thought out storyline.

Popular people are suddenly actors, some actors that went to school for this reason are left out not because they are not good enough but only because their number of followers will not generate the required daily ‘Sold Out’ post on social media.

It feels like the cinemas just want to fill up their chairs which I well understand, but I also agree that we can achieve same with good movies and not the recent popular contest going on with movie casting.

It’s almost award season and in a couple of weeks, we would all dress up in our bottom box to argue about why other African countries are winning awards and producing better movies. We need to get back to the drawing board and pay attention to our story lines, hire proper actors, and take away our foot away from the ‘sold out’ pedal.

Selling out is awesome, plus man’s gotta eat right? But we had better be selling out great content while we are at it. ‘Giant of Africa’ no be by number.

LeBron James Agrees To Join Lakers For $154 Million

Featured Image

Basketball superstar LeBron James has signed a four-year, $154 million deal to join the Los Angeles Lakers, his agents said Sunday night, ending months of frenzied speculation about the NBA superstar’s next career move.

The announcement was made through his agency, Klutch Sports Group.

The blockbuster contract sends the 33-year-old four-time NBA Most Valuable Player to one of the league’s most iconic clubs, adding to the legacy of such legends as Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson.

“LeBron James, four time NBA MVP, three-time NBA finals MVP, 14-time NBA All-Star, and two-time Olympic gold medallist, has agreed to a four-year $154 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers,” James’ management company Klutch Sports Group said in a statement.

James is considered a rival of retired Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan for the title of greatest player in NBA history.

However, he had endured frustration with the Cleveland Cavaliers, culminating in last month’s clean sweep defeat to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals.

“Words do not express the meaning and the feeling this accomplishment brought to the people of Northeast Ohio,” Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert said in a lengthy statement thanking James.

“None of this would have happened if LeBron James did not agree to come back home and lead the Cavaliers to the promised land.

“LeBron is a family man, first. We wish his kids, his wife, Savannah, his mother, Gloria, and LeBron himself nothing but the best in the years and decades ahead. LeBron’s connection to Akron, Cleveland and all of Northeast Ohio will most certainly endure as his commitment to the region and his support of many important causes has been impactful to so many kids and families.

“LeBron, you came home and delivered the ultimate goal. Nothing but appreciation and gratitude for everything you put into every moment you spent in a Cavaliers uniform. We look forward to the retirement of the famous #23 Cavs jersey one day down the line …”

Arsenal will complete a deal for Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira in the next week, according to reports

Arsenal have allegedly been in talks with the Sampdoria player over the past few weeks

According to The Mail on Sunday, Arsenal are in the latter stages of talks with Torreira, with the deal expected to be worth the £25m set in the 22-year-old’s contract.

The newspaper says that the midfielder’s switch will be completed at some point next week after the clubs progressed well through negotiations over a switch.

Lucas Torreira, who only made his international debut in March, has earned six caps for his country.

President Massimo Ferrero told Italian TV the player was ‘gone for €30m’, and the sale was ‘necessary to increase our club’s capital’. Perhaps the Mail is just really playing it safe, with their assessment of the situation.

One thing Arsenal fans are more and more sure of is that Torreira would be a fantastic signing for the team’s midfield

AMCON Talks Tough, To Seize Assets Worth N5.4Trillion From Bank Debtors

Bank debtors who are owing N5.4 trillion are set to lose their assets as the Assets Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) has said that there will be no more room for negotiation with them as it is now set for a new stage of complete asset takeover.

This disclosure was made by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, AMCON, Mr Ahmed Kuru, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday, July 1, 2018.

According to him, the N5.4tn debts had lingered for too long.

Kuru said AMCON had got tired of debtors coming to its office and telling lies about wanting to embark on staggered payment, which they ended up never fulfilling.

He stated that most part of the N5.4tn debt had been with the banks for five years before AMCON bought them over, adding that after seven years of its operations, the obligors had yet to pay.

Kuru said, “Resolutions through staggered plans have never worked. Let us not forget that before those loans were transferred to AMCON, they had been with the banks for over five years. Now, AMCON is almost seven years; so, the facilities have been running bad for 12 years. It is not easy to recover those kinds of facilities.

“So now, we have changed our strategy from sitting down and drinking tea and the obligors telling us lies and we pretend that we don’t know you are telling us lies. There is no more time for lies, because we have a sunset period. So, now our focus is on recovery. We do not want to hear anything; you cannot come and tell me you are going to pay me in the next six years, I do not have that time.

“If you cannot pay me the money now then give me my assets, because the assets belong to AMCON, so that we can sell them.”

He added that in the case where the registered assets of a company that was in debt were not enough to clear their obligations, then AMCON would also go after the directors and their private companies.

Kuru said as part of the new strategy of AMCON, directors of companies would now be sought after so that they would be forced to take part in repaying loans obtained by their firms.
