No fewer than 500 members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos on Tuesday defected to the All Progressives Congress.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the new entrants to APC concluded their defection at an elaborate ceremony held at the APC secretariat in Ikeja.

The defectors, from the 57 councils in the state, were led by a former PDP chieftain, Mr. Elijah Awodeyi. They were received into their new party by the APC chairman in the state, Mr. Tunde Balogun.

Balogun said that the APC was delighted to receive the new members and groups joining the party. He said their coming meant that they had decided to join the progressive train and stay with the party that stood for development.

“We are happy to receive these 500 people into our fold. We want to congratulate them for leaving darkness for light.

“These people have realised that APC is the party to be in view of the sterling performance of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in his first term in office.

“We are happy at their joining us once again and we want them to feel at home,” he said.

Awodeyi, while receiving the APC flag from Balogun, said they decided to dump the opposition for the APC because of the progress in the state, noting that they were encouraged by the performance of the governor.

“APC has done well in Lagos. Ambode has done well. We are joining APC because this is the party of progress,” Awodeyi said.

He promised that he and others would contribute their quota to take the party to greater heights.

NAN reports that different groups within the APC openly endorsed Ambode for second term at the ceremony.

#WorldCupWith360nobs: Michael Carrick Praises The Qualities Of Jesse Lingard

Featured Image

Michael Carrick has paid tribute to the qualities of “unique” Jesse Lingard.

Jesse Lingard, 25, scored 13 times in all competitions for United during the 2017-18 campaign, and worked his way into the England XI ahead of the 2018 World Cup.

Lingard is expected to be in the team when England face Colombia in the last-16 stage of the World Cup on Tuesday night, and Carrick has hailed his former teammate.

“I think his movement – he moves off the ball very well. It’s something that sounds quite simple, but it’s difficult to defend against,” Carrick told United’s official website.

“He senses where the space is and how to use it. I wouldn’t necessarily say he’s a dribbler with skills and tricks but he’s dynamic. How he plays, he is unique in some ways.

“You don’t see so much of that in the game as everyone wants to get on the ball and do something on the ball. Off the ball, he’s very effective.”

Ramsey Nuoah Reveals Why Nollywood Has Failed To Capture Herdsmen Attack

Prominent Nigerian actor, Ramsey Nouah, has revealed why filmmakers in the country’s movie industry (Nollywood) have failed to capture herdsmen attacks and political issues in their films.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s programme, Rubbin Minds, the very handsome actor said Nollywood, in recent time, lacks structure, depth and is largely driven by the demands of the ‘market’ compared to the past.

His words: “The industry had more depth in the past than it has today. Now, everyone is more interested in the outlook (eye candy) than the performance and we are not talking about political issues or the herdsmen.

“Why is the story all about Bentley cars? Everyone wants to shoot about posh things, cars and not filming issues about herdsmen attack, killings, villagers and the political issues happening in the country. It is not the actors or filmmakers fault, it is what the market is demanding and everyone is thinking about the quick way to wealth so they jump into it.”

According to him, actors are more interested in portraying ‘posh’ things, appearing on red carpets with perfect pictures rather than concentrating on pressing issues in the country.

He continued: “There is a lot of dynamics going on in the industry tending towards not finding bearing and lack of structure.Back in the days, most filmmakers and my contemporaries were passionate about arts and gave it all today it is more like on the surface, people are more conscious about their looks rather than acts.”

Ebonyi Announces Total Ban On Sales Of tramadol, codeine substances

The government of Ebonyi State has announced a total ban on the sales of tramadol and codeine-containing products in chemists, pharmacies and other health facilities in the state.

NAN reports that Dr Sunday Nwangele, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Gov. David Umahi on Health Services, announced this in Abakaliki after the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting.

The spokesman, who said that the ban took immediate effect, added that restriction has also been placed on the sale of antibiotics and analgesics Over The Counter (OTC) in these health outlets.

His words: “Henceforth, issuance of antibiotics and analgesics will be strictly on doctor’s prescription as this directive will be adequately monitored.”

“OTC drugs are not affected by the restriction as is obtained in the country, African continent and other parts of the world.

“The OTC drugs such as paracetamol, minimal dosage of Ibuprofen, aspirin, among others, are basic analgesics and drugs used to treat fever but we are talking of serious analgesics.

“These analgesics are orally administered, injected into the muscles or veins and can also be steroidal or non-steroidal.

“This is the area doctor’s prescription comes in because such drugs such as tramadol are greatly abused and they reflect in the brain.

“The state government is aware of the devastating effects of these drugs especially on the youths which have led to increase in crime and other social vices.”

Nwangele further said that the government has also declared war on adulterated kerosene and other petroleum products across the state by placing total ban on their sales.

“The government, however, sympathises with the family which lost its dear ones at Ezza South Local Government Area due to kerosene explosion.

“The governor further directs his special assistant on petroleum pricing and distribution to liaise with relevant security agencies and petroleum products-dealers in the state to enforce the directive.

“The government will deal decisively with individuals or groups who sell tramadol and codeine-containing products, flout the restriction on sale of antibiotics and analgesics and sell adulterated petroleum products.

“The committee set up to check the sale of fake drugs and other substandard products are working assiduously with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

“It is our desire that the committee and these agencies work together to achieve a total stoppage to the sale and usage of fake products in the state,’’ he said.

Thibaut Courtois spent three seasons on loan with Atletico Madrid between 2011 and 2014, before returning to Chelsea to replace Petr Cech.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Real Madrid over the last 12 months or so amid suggestions that he does not want to sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge

Courtois’s current deal with Chelsea actually expires next summer, and the Belgian has hinted that he wants to secure a return to Spain ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

“London is a great city to live in, just like Madrid,” Courtois told Diario Sport. “My children live in Madrid and for me it is important for them to be close to me so I want to do something to be able to see them more regularly.

“That does not mean I will return to Madrid and I do not want to discuss my future now, that will be after the World Cup. But my children are the most important thing for me.”

#WorldCupWith360nobs: Joachim Low To Remain As Coach Of Germany Despite Early World Cup Exit

Featured Image

Germany manager Joachim Low will remain in charge despite their disastrous World Cup campaign.

Joachim Low is understood to have given a verbal commitment to see out the new contract he signed before the World Cup, which extended his stay in the role until 2022.

Germany failed to make it out of the group stage at this summer’s World Cup in Russia, finishing bottom of Group F after a shock 2-0 defeat to South Korea

“I feel, in spite of the legitimate criticism of our departure, generally much support and encouragement,” said Low.

“But now I want to design the rebuilding with full commitment. It all takes time, but everything will happen in time for the start of the new international season in September.”

DFB President Reinhard Grindel had insisted Low’s position was safe even if they suffered a premature exit.

National team director Oliver Bierhoff said: “I am very pleased that Jogi Löw is at the helm of our national team and we sat together for a long time yesterday and I felt the full energy to continue.

“After 14 years of successful work, we now have to rebuild and we will now be thinking about it and about further structural changes.”

The duo are expected to discuss issues bordering on security and terrorism.

French President Macron To Visit Fela’s Afrika Shrine In Lagos On Tuesday

Macron had on Monday in Nouakchott during the closing ceremony of the AU Summit met with the Nigerian leader.

The French ruler will after his engagement with Buhari visit the Afrika Shrine, a nightclub in Lagos founded by Nigerian music legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

It is believed that Macron would become the first “real president” to enter the club synonymous with marijuana smoke, sexy backup dancers and protest music.

Bear in mind that the French president is not a stranger to Nigeria. He trained as a senior civil servant at the French Embassy in Lagos in 2004, seven years after Fela died.

How The Nigerian Police Rescued Super Eagles Captain Mikel Obi’s Kidnapped Father, Pa Michael Obi

Featured Image

The Enugu State chapter of the Nigerian Police has confirmed the rescue of Pa Michael Obi and his driver, Ishaya John, after he was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Friday, June 29.

The Father of the Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi was rescued by the police on Monday around 2.30pm in Egede Udi forest of Enugu State. Pa Michael Obi and his driver were abducted along Markurdi Enugu road on Friday afternoon while he was on his way from Jos and then taken to an unknown destination. He was in his grey coloured Toyota Prado jeep with registration number MUS 604CG.

A police statement released on Monday said,

“The abductors then started calling the families to demand a ransom of N10 million but the operatives acting on intelligence information swooped on them. A gun duel ensued which forced the hoodlums to abandon their victims inside the forest and they were promptly rescued,”

In his reaction, Pa Michael Obi heaped praise on the response and efforts of the police which led to their rescue, noting that he is alive and healthy. A team of doctors from the police medical unit later conducted a medical check on Pa Michael Obi at the office of the commissioner of police and confirmed that he was healthy.

Pa Obi and the driver have since rejoined their family.

Crisis In NFF As FG Sacks Pinnick, Asks Giwa To Take Over

Featured Image

The crisis in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) took a new dimension on Monday after the federal government asked Chris Giwa to assume duty as president of the NFF.

This followed a directive from the Minister of Sport, Solomon Dalung, who sought that Amaju Pinnick should hand over to Giwa.

Dalung, in a statement from his media aide, Nneka Anibeze, said the directive followed a written notification signed for the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice requesting the Ministry of Youth and Sports to ensure compliance.

Dalung stated, “I have been directed to notify you of the orders dated June 5th, 2018, made by Honourable Justice M. H. Kurya, sitting at the Federal High Court, Jos, in respect of the above-mentioned suit between Yahaya Adama vs Aminu Maigari, which states that the election of the NFF held on August 26, 2014, under the leadership of Chris Giwa, be given recognition pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed in this case and that the purported ban of the Executive Committee elected on August 26, 2014 from football activities of the NFF is unconstitutional, null and void.

“It is trite law that court orders are sacrosanct and any act of disobedience to it constitutes a threat to the rule of law. Consequent upon the above, you are hereby advised to comply with the orders of court made therein, which for now, is the valid and binding order of court, in the absence of any other subsisting order or judgment to the contrary.”

“This is a court order and not from Dalung. I will not want to go to Kuje prison because of disobedience of court orders. Therefore, I hereby comply with the court orders of June 5th 2018, while Mr Amaju Pinnick and others are also directed to comply with same.”

Giwa, who was elected as NFF president on August 26, 2014, has been locked in a leadership tussle with the Amaju Pinnick-led NFF board, after an order from a Jos High Court had stopped the election which brought Pinnick to office on September 30, 2014 in Warri, Delta State.

But yesterday, Giwa reportedly resumed at the Glasshouse with armed policemen to enforce the Supreme Court judgment.

Speaking also to newsmen at the Glasshouse in Abuja, Giwa said his assumption of office was in line with the ruling of the court on June 5, 2018.

He said: “We are here today (Monday) by virtue of the mandate we got at the Annual General Assembly of the NFF that took place on 26th August 2014 at Chida Hotel (Abuja), where we were elected into the NFF Executive Committee to serve for four years.

“We have plans on ground for all the national teams which we will roll out after our next board meeting on Friday. I know that Nigerians want results and my prayer is to get the needed positive results for all the national teams. Though, it is one thing to have a good plan and programmes and another thing to get the needed result but I know with God on our side, our national teams will make all Nigerians proud once again.”

However, Pinnick’s legal representative, Festus Keyamo (SAN), said the court order was not binding on his client’s led board.

“Whilst our clients respect the sanctity of court orders, unfortunately the said court orders are not binding on FIFA, the World Football Governing Body. The NFF is an affiliate of FIFA. It should be noted that FIFA has consistently maintained that this same matter has been taken to the highest Court of Sports Arbitration in Switzerland by these same individuals and they have lost,” Keyamo said in a statement.

“The obvious implication of all these is that if any attempt is made to recognise Chris Giwa and derecognise Amaju Pinnick and his board, FIFA will definitely impose a lengthy ban on Nigeria from all football competitions locally and internationally and that will spell doom for Nigerian Football.”
