On Monday, a 24-year-old man, Lucky Friday faced an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stabbing an Uber driver and robbing him of his Toyota Corolla car valued at N1.4m.

The accused is now facing two counts of conspiracy and armed robbery.

Police Prosecutor, Benson Emuerhi, told the court that Friday committed the offences with others still at large on March 16 at Ekingbon Estate in Lekki area of Lagos. Adding that he allegedly stabbed the complainant, Mr. Godfrey Ovie, on the stomach with a dagger and robbed him of a Toyota Corolla car with registration number FST 663 EZ.

“The complainant was attacked while driving the accused and his accomplices who had earlier boarded his car. Suddenly, the accused brought out a dagger and stabbed the complainant on the stomach and thereafter robbed him of the car. He was arrested by some policemen from Ajah Police Division while trying to escape, but his accomplices fled the scene in an unmarked motorcycle,” Emuerhi said.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat remanded Friday in prison and directed that the case file should be sent to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions for advice and adjourned the case until October 22.

Featured Image

Music super couple Beyoncé & Jay-Z, alongside Ed Sheeran and Wizkid have been penciled in to perform in Global Citizen Festival‘s Mandela 100 in Johannesburg, South Africa celebrating a hundred years since Nelson Mandela’s birth.

The free concert will hold on December 2nd at Johannesburg’s FNB stadium and Bob Geldof, Naomi Campbell, Gayle King, Tyler Perry, Forest Whitaker and South African TV host Bonang Matheba will serve as hosts. Other artistes lined up include Pharrell Williams, Femi Kuti, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Usher, Cassper Nyovest, Sho Madjozi, D’banj, Eddie Vedder, Tiwa Savage. Oprah Winfrey will also deliver a keynote address on Mandela’s legacy.

“Nelson Mandela did not care much for tributes. Rather, he was concerned with action, results and impactful outcomes to ensure the restoration of the dignity of all the people of South Africa, Africa and the globe,” Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans tells Rolling Stone.

“It is our hope that the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 drives leaders to pursue such action and results in the effort to end extreme poverty,” Evans adds. “If we are able to achieve that, then we might be able to fulfill Mandela’s unfinished work and live up to being that ‘great generation’ he so desired and believed we were capable of being.”

“Nelson Mandela’s life story is a testament to the power of the human spirit and one man’s ability to change the world by standing up for what he believed in,” Oprah Winfrey added. “It is one of the great honors of my life to have spent so much time with him, and I look forward to celebrating his courageous life.”

Mandela 100

To win a ticket, fans would have to go through the Global Citizen site and perform various “actions” such as contacting world leaders and signing petitions. In addition to Mandela 100, the first Global Citizen concert to be held in Africa, the festival will also return to New York’s Central Park on September 29th. The lineup for that fest has not yet been announced.

West Ham United have announced the signing of Jack Wilshere on a three-year contract following his release by Arsenal.
Jack Wilshere, 26, left the Gunners after 17 years when his contract expired last month.

“It feels good, it feels special,” said Wilshere on the West Ham website. “Many people know that I’ve had a special bond with this club growing up.”

Born in Hertfordshire, Wilshere grew up in a family who supported the Irons.

He said: “People will have seen the picture of me in a West Ham shirt and I’ve got good memories of my childhood supporting West Ham, watching them at Upton Park.

“It feels good and of course my family and a few of my friends are West Ham fans so everyone’s buzzing.”

West Ham director of football Mario Husillos added: “Manuel and I identified him as a target as soon as we joined the club and we are delighted to have succeeded in securing Jack’s signature above a number of other teams.”

West Ham are also working on a deal for Borussia Dortmund winger Yarmolenko.

Yarmolenko only joined Dortmund a year ago for a fee of £23million from Dynamo Kiev but they are willing to let him go and their sporting director, Michael Zorc, confirmed late on Sunday that West Ham were in talks over a deal.

The 29-year-old told the club’s official website: “It’s taken a little while, but it’s definitely been worth the wait. I always wanted to stay and I told the gaffer that. Even though I didn’t say much in the news, I just wanted to do my job on the pitch.

“It was tough work to get back, ready to represent my country at the World Cup, and for Cardiff City. Now, signing this deal has been my number one priority and I can’t wait to meet back up with the boys.”

Belgium winger Nacer Chadli has praised Kylian Mbappe ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup semifinal match Vs France

Nacer Chadli scored a dramatic late winning goal to seal a 3-2 victory over Japan in the last 16, started the quarterfinal success against Brazil and is likely to start against Les Bleus with Thomas Meunier suspended.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Chadli admitted that the Paris Saint-Germain star’s meteoric rise is perhaps only equalled by that of Lionel Messi.

“What Mbappe is doing at his age, I have never seen before,” said the 28-year-old. “Except, perhaps, Messi.

“Mbappe is hard to stop — he is fast, has plenty of quality, and he is very technical.”

RB Leipzig Still In Talks With Everton To Sign Ademola Lookman Permanently

Featured Image

New RB Leipzig head coach Ralf Rangnick has confirmed the club remain in talks with Everton over a deal for Ademola Lookman.

it was reported that Everton rejected a £12m offer for the forward from Leipzig earlier this week.

“I think three more signings is realistic,” Rangnick said. “We’re still in talks over Ademola Lookman – we want him back and he wants to come.

“We’re also looking at something in central midfield, whether that’s a No 6, 8 or 10.”

Having initially been against sending Ademola Lookman out on loan last January, Everton’s then-manager Sam Allardyce changed his mind, favouring a short-term deal with a Championship club.

But Lookman joined Leipzig until the end of the season, with Allardyce saying it was “one of the most unusual situations I’ve been in”.

He added: “His stubbornness meant he got his own way. I hope he proves us all wrong.”

Galatasaray have announced that talks are ongoing with Everton to sign Henry Onyekuru on loan for the 2018-19 season.

Everton completed a deal after they activated his £6.8m release clause, but Onyekuru has yet to make an appearance for the Toffees.

Spain Appoint Jose Francisco Molina As New Sporting Director

Featured Image

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have appointed Jose Francisco Molina as the new sporting director.

Jose Francisco Molina succeeds Fernando Hierro, who resigned from the role on Sunday.

“This is the best place to work,” Molina said in Monday’s news conference in the RFEF’s headquarters in Las Rozas, Madrid. “I’m very enthusiastic. A magnificent job has been done in the past. It’s true that in the last three tournaments we have not achieved the results we expected.

“Things have to change and a new chapter begins. We have to look to the future.”

Spain were eliminated from the World Cup by hosts Russia in the round of 16 of the competition after losing 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

Molina has signed a two-year contract and RFEF president Luis Rubiales says Molina is the right man for the job.

“Molina has played for the national team,” Rubiales said. “He is known, he has worked for the last 10 years as a manager. We consider him the ideal candidate.” Molina met with Rubiales last week to discuss who will replace Julen Lopetegui as coach of the national team.

Spain Appoint Luis Enrique As New Manager On A Two-year Deal

Featured Image

Spain have announced the appointment of former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique as their new coach on a two-year contract.

Luis Enrique takes over from Fernando Hierro, who was thrown into the role on the eve of Spain’s disappointing World Cup campaign following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui.

Enrique, strongly linked with the Chelsea job earlier this summer, begins a new era for Spanish football with a trip to face England in the inaugural UEFA Nations League on September 8.

Spain endured a disappointing World Cup campaign in Russia this summer, having been dumped out by the tournament hosts in the first knockout round.

Spain’s new sporting director, José Francisco Molina, said: “We need a successful coach, who’s modern and who knows the game style but can make small adjustments. We can’t swipe everything clean, with regards to all the work carried out.” His first game in charge will be a friendly against England, on 8 September at Wembley.

The president of the SFF, Luis Rubiales, said: “We have not spoken to anybody else – only Luis Enrique.”

Rubiales added that the decision to appoint Luis Enrique was unanimous. “We liked his commitment and he has turned down better paid jobs to coach the Spanish national team.”

Oye AKD Of 360nobs Wins Big At The 2018 Marketing Edge Awards

“Last week Friday, I was so elated to have won the Digital Entertainment Innovator of the Year award in #Marketingedge’s 2018 awards,” says Oye Akideinde, a co-founder of 360nobs, after receiving the award.

Mr Akideinde, who also doubles as the GM Operations, Mobile App at TECNO Mobile, added: “The award meant so much to me and was definitely larger than me. I couldn’t have won it without the support of my family, colleagues, friends and industry stakeholders.”

Oyebowale Akideinde: African Innovators Can Help Solve Our Problems

Oyebowale Akideinde: African Innovators Can Help Solve Our Problems

“The moment was about visibility and about representation. What and who is seen in the media defines our perception of Nigeria and the world around us. My aim has always been to impact humanity positively through innovation and ensure that Nigeria stops being seen as a consumer but as an innovator. Innovation is one of the strongest agents that help move a nation and humanity ahead.”

“It got me thinking about how we can position Nigeria and Africa firmly on the Global innovation map. Most innovations that work so well in other continents never seem to be suited to solving Africa’s problems – from poverty to corruption to poor infrastructure. Our best hope really lies within us – the African innovators. I have seen a lot of indigenous innovations perform better than their Western offerings. The answer is simple – Our understanding of the local market and the problem help us to innovate better solutions – at a cheaper cost too. We simply need help from big corporations and investors to fund our initiatives and executions. Thankfully, knowledge in tech advancements, lower costs of tech and data penetration have helped to overcome some of our financial MVP needs and understand how to deliver low-cost solutions.”

“Africa is seen as the last untapped market for opportunities. I simply urge us to not just tap these opportunities but to innovate what can improve our well-being and solve our “quick-sand” problems. Once we achieve these, the opportunities will be endless in Africa in all sectors from Fintech to Entertainment to Tech to Agriculture to Education. Then can we start being true entrepreneurs who identify the opportunities in great innovations and create more opportunities, add values and keep the value improving over a period of time.”

“Let’s start actualising our light bulbs everyone.”

Noble Takes The BUJ: Haircut With A Happy EndingI got into Abuja on Thursday Afternoon and because I was busy in Lagos, I didn’t get the chance for a haircut before flying out but an email requesting a head shot got me searching for a hair salon. You know Man’s gotta look hot.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I could trust any Abuja barber but when a friend suggested that I try the folks at Prime Touch, I accepted with batted breath. After all, if the beard is not out of shame, one can always go skin.

Noble Takes The BUJ: Haircut With A Happy EndingI left Transcorp Hilton with Philip my friend and photographer, on getting to the address, Philip was already out of the car and snapping away.

I felt like a proper “small boy with big a God” arriving an event and people legit stopped to watch me come down from my uber, flips invisible weave.

On entering the store, I asked to see the best fade barber and I was directed to Austin the owner who then asked Abdul to attend to me. I took off my jacket, sat down on the chair and allowed Abdul to do his thing and at the end of it all, I was really impressed with the result.

CAF Bans Kenyan Referee For Life Over Bribery

CAF Bans Kenyan Referee For Life Over Bribery

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Saturday banned Kenya’s celebrated assistant referee Aden Marwa from all football activities for life after being caught in a bribery sting.

Marwa, who had been due to officiate at the ongoing World Cup in Russia, was handed a life ban, after he was filmed receiving a 600-dollar bribe during Confederation of African Football (CAF) assignment in Ghana.

He is one of 22 referees sanctioned by CAF in an unprecedented clean up, announced at the weekend.

A statement released by the CAF Disciplinary Board announced the sorry fate that befell the former teacher, but it failed to explain whether such a decision came as a consequence of investigation into the allegations.

“The following decisions were taken by the Caf Disciplinary board regarding the referees involved, Mr. Marwa Range, assistant referee (Kenya); life ban from all Caf related football activities,” statement partially reads.

Marwa, who was a reserve at the 2014 finals in Brazil, had earlier been removed from the list of match officials due to officiate in Russia.

The life ban was handed out by CAF’s disciplinary board, which also banned 10 other referees for between two years and 10 years for similar offences.

A further 11 persons have been suspended pending an appearance at the board in August.

African football has long been plagued by allegations of bribery but never before has CAF banned such a large number of officials.
