Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City.

Xherdan Shaqiri has signed a long-term contract and becomes Jurgen Klopp’s third summer signing after the arrivals of Naby Keita and Fabinho.

The Switzerland international will wear the No 23 shirt at Anfield, vacated by Emre Can after his move to Juventus.

Shaqiri has outlined his reasons for joining Liverpool, three years after he was denied the move.

“As a player, you always want to be on the biggest stage in football. A few years ago I wanted to come too but it didn’t happen. I’m really happy that now I’m finally here. I want to improve myself too, I want to be with the best and I want to win titles. That’s what I’m here for.”

Shaqiri had two years remaining on his Stoke contract but made clear his intentions to leave following the club’s relegation from the Premier League last season.

Real Betis Announce Signing Of Portuguese International William Carvalho

Featured Image

William Carvalho has joined Real Betis from Sporting Lisbon, signing a five-year deal with the Spanish club.

Carvalho was linked throughout the summer with a move to the Premier League, with Everton among the clubs interested in securing the midfielder.

The 26-year-old, who represented Portugal at the World Cup, is heading to Betis in a deal reportedly worth £22m, despite Monaco‘s best attempts to persuade Sporting to hold off accepting a bid.

William Carvalho recently terminated his contract with former club Sporting Lisbon, from the Portuguese Liga NOS, after an attack on Lisbon’s training centre in May by a group of ultras. They trashed the centre and attacked players and staff, in violent protest against the club’s chairman, who has since been replaced.

Huddersfield Town Complete Signing Of Erik Durm From Borussia Dortmund For Undisclosed Fee

Featured Image

Huddersfield Town have signed German international defender Erik Durm from Borussia Dortmund for an undisclosed fee.

The full-back has signed a one-year contract, with the Terriers having the option on extending it into the 2019/20 season.

Erik  Durm has earned seven caps for his country and is well-known to Huddersfield head coach David Wagner, who signed him for Borussia Dortmund II in 2012.

Durm has struggled for game time at the Westfalenstadion in recent years due to injuries, making just 20 appearances over the last two seasons.

He has however recovered from his latest injury sustained in January when he ruptured ligaments in his ankle.

Wagner told the club’s official website: “It is not every day that you can bring a player of the quality of Erik to your Club. He is a World Cup winner and has played at the very highest level, so this is a fantastic day for Huddersfield Town.

“Obviously I know Erik well from our time together at Dortmund and he has all the qualities to be a great success in our ‘Terriers Identity’.

“He has been very unfortunate with injuries for a year now, but he was training with Dortmund at the end of the season and he’s passed our medical with flying colours this week. That’s no surprise to me; he was always one of the fittest players at Dortmund and has great physical attributes; real stamina and speed.”

Featured Image

FIFA has fined both the Swedish and Croatian Football Associations 50,000 Swiss francs each for equipment breaches by some of their players.

Sweden, who have already returned home from the World Cup after being eliminated, were fined for the same offence prior to their quarterfinal defeat to England.

The Swedish FA had confirmed at the time that it had received the sanction about its kit and socks.

“Despite having been previously requested to cease the activity that led to the breach and receiving a sanction on 6 July 2018, one member of the Swedish national team (as opposed to several players in the previous case) displayed unauthorised commercial branding on playing equipment items during the … quarterfinal match between Sweden and England,” FIFA said.

World Cup finalists Croatia, who face France at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday, were also fined.

“A fine of CHF 50,000 and a warning to the Croatian Football Federation for breaching the Media and Marketing Regulations and the FIFA Equipment Regulations,” FIFA said.

“In particular and despite having been previously requested by FIFA to cease the activity that led to the breach and receiving a sanction on 5 July 2018, one member of the Croatian national team displayed unauthorised commercial branding on playing equipment items during the … semifinal match between Croatia and England,” it said

FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed on Friday that The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be played between Nov. 21 through December 18, he, however, failed to confirm the number of participating teams

The next edition of the tournament will switch to the winter months because of the summer climate in Qatar, and Infantino announced the exact dates.

“The dates for the World Cup are set. It will played in Qatar from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18, 2022,” he said. “The leagues are all aware and they will have to adapt their calendars as a consequence.

“In the end it is the right decision. It cannot be played in June and July and in November and December the players are very well prepared because it is almost the beginning of the season.”

Gianni Infantino went on that reveal that Host nation Qatar can insist on keeping a 32-team format, though he is “pretty sure that all options will be on the table.”

“In the coming months, we will meet with them and adopt a decision. For the moment, it will be played with 32 teams and the distribution of spots will remain as they are,” he said.

“First we will discuss with the Qataris and then with the FIFA Council and stakeholders and decide calmly what the decision is. For the moment, we have a World Cup with 32 teams.”

Juan Fernando Quintero Happy To Remain At River Plate Despite Offers From Other Clubs

Featured Image

River Plate midfielder Juan Fernando Quintero has stated his desire to remain in Argentina – but could be available for £22m, according to the club’s president Rodolfo D’Onofrio.

Quintero is on a year-long loan from Porto, impressing during the World Cup with Colombia despite their last-16 exit to England.

River have an option to buy, and D’Onofrio said: “I know of offers for Quintero. He is happy to be in River. If someone wants to take him, they will have to pay €25million. Let’s not take it out of context; the boy says he’s okay here.”

Juan Fernando Quintero’s World Cup place had looked in doubt after struggling for form, fitness and games at Porto, but a transfer to River Plate in January reignited his fortunes. He made 13 appearances in the Argentine top flight and secured his place in Russia.

He scored his country’s first goal of the 2018 World Cup with a low free-kick against Japan in a game they lost 2-1.

The 31-year-old scored six goals in 13 games for Las Palmas, an impressive return, but fell out with new coach Paco Jemez almost immediately upon his appointment and days later was shipped out on loan to Getafe.

Fayose’s Worst Fear Coming True

Featured Image

Fayose’s Worst Fear Coming True, By Azu Ishiekwene

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, has been on been on the rooftop and won’t come down till long after Saturday. He has been screaming, for all the world to hear, that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) plans to rig this weekend’s governorship election for his arch foe, Kayode Fayemi.

This piece was written by Azu Ishiekwene. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

From Fayose’s camp, it seems that the APC will not be content to win. The icing on the cake would be to brutalise Fayose, break his neck and present his head on a platter to Aso Rock. Armageddon is the closest metaphor.

As Fayose wept, with a neck brace worn upside down and his left hand in a sling, claiming he had been attacked shortly before his party’s rally in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, it would take someone who has eaten the proverbial head of the tortoise not to feel sorry for this drama prince.

According to Fayose, the APC has enlisted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the police, the Department of State Services, and maybe a few stray devils from Libya, to help Fayemi win the vote by means fair and foul.

On Tuesday, he said the result of the governorship election had been written and quoted dodgy figures in two local government councils, ostensibly to support his claim.

Even though it is Kolapo Olusola, and not Fayose, that is the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the election, you’ll be forgiven to think that Fayose is in the race. And he might well be.

Whatever the constitution says about term limits, Saturday’s contest between Olusola and Fayemi is a proxy war for Fayose’s third term. He will summon both real and imaginary conspiracies, if not to win the vote, then perhaps to discredit the system and get public sympathy.

His brace and sling are part one of the wretched political game, the costume of a political dramatist.

When Fayose cries wolf about alleged connivance between INEC, security services on the one hand, and Fayemi’s campaign on the other, he’s haunted not only by concerns for a free and fair contest. He is tormented also by prospects that he could be at the receiving end of a system from which he was a principal beneficiary four years ago.

Documented records after the election showed that Abuja robbed the treasury, dragged a major commercial bank into the mess and also put top military and government officials at the disposal of Fayose. The PDP federal government left nothing to chance in a desperate effort to ensure victory for its candidate at the time.

It’s probable that Fayose would still have won that contest, partly because of Fayemi’s complacency. But a taped conversation by an insider, Captain Sagir Koli, on how the election was rigged by state agents, revealed that rival party leaders, especially those of the APC, were deliberately subjected to harassment and intimidation on the eve of the election, casting serious doubt on the integrity of the result of the 2014 governorship election.

This history is playing out as a farce, with the APC government deploying more policemen and soldiers in Ekiti in peacetime than we have seen in any of the numerous hotspots begging for attention.

After four years of Fayose’s politics of stomach infrastructure, which essentially comprised eating roasted corn by the roadside, eating amala at a market shed, sharing birthday cake on the streets, and supplying petrol to okada riders from the underground tank in the government house, Fayose ought to have raised enough foot soldiers from the 913,000 registered voters to defend the vote and secure a third term, without faking a broken neck.

If this were a vote for brinkmanship, Fayose’s candidate would gain immeasurably from the hubris of the last four years. When Fayose is not advertising his death wish for President Muhammadu Buhari with state funds, he’s taunting and teasing the Presidency over one policy mishap or the other.

He’s been ruthlessly efficient at criticising the federal government, insinuating and inflaming public opinion with half-truths often shared on a speed dial.

Now, it has dawned on him that whatever his grouse against Abuja might be – and there are quite a few legitimate ones, like the herders-farmers clashes, for example – his candidate will be judged not by his fans outside, but by voters in the state that he, Fayose, abandoned in his quest for popularity as the self-assigned lightning rod of the opposition.

His worst nightmare must be what happens next. All the brace, the sling and the arrow are diversions from his poor record and the fear of what might happen to him once he no longer enjoys immunity.

The fear runs deep. It goes as far back as Fayose’s first term when police, SSS and court records linked him to the deaths of Tunde Omojola, Ayo Adaramola and Kehinde Fasuba, whose families are yet to get justice.

At home, in Ekiti, where he was re-elected to govern, there’s little evidence that Fayose’s record would save his candidate in Saturday and give him a third term by proxy.

He said, in an interview with The Guardian in March, that education has been his greatest area of achievement. The records do not support his claim. Ekiti is one of the 17 states that has failed to access a N16.2 billion UBEC fund, provided to ease basic education in the states.

Instead of accessing the fund, Fayose’s government defaulted on the N850 million counterpart fund loan provided by Access Bank under the previous administration. The government creamed off the interest, estimated at N70 million by two independent sources, and simply continued levying primary and secondary school pupils.

On Fayose’s watch, the state university has been starved of subvention and the nursing school is a shadow of itself. Primary and secondary school teachers are being owed salaries of between six and eight months, while pensioners have not been paid for 11 months.

This woeful record casts a shadow on the government’s eager attempt to claim credit for the modest improvements in WASC/NECO school results in the State. Pressed between the rock and the hard place, students may well have taken their fate in their own hands.

If Fayemi lost four years ago because of internal rebellion, his weak grip on a few wayward personal staff and lack of common touch, Ekiti has careened from the elitist Fayemi end of the spectrum to the squalid Fayose end where drama, gimmickry and a personality cult have been elevated to statecraft.

Governance, it seems, has become a joke and it’s doubtful if serious-minded voters would recognise Ekiti as the same land of honour and integrity they used to know.

In this important election over which Olusola has canvassed strong progressive views on education and ICT, I imagine that he would like to be judged, not strictly by Fayose’s standards, but in his own right as a candidate and, inescapably, a joint heir in the legacy of the last four years.

That’s the whole point of elections – for voters to weigh the candidates on the ballot and decide who will get their mandate on the simple question: Is your life better today than it was four years ago?

None of the major contestants in Saturday’s race is a stranger and their backers have not hidden their hands either.

If voters allow themselves to be blindsided by the drama on either side, they’ll live with the consequences, perhaps for another four years and the god of the stomach will not save them.

Real Madrid Rule Out Signing Neymar From PSG This Summer

Featured Image

Real Madrid have released a statement this evening denying reports that they have made a bid for Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar.

The Spanish club says they have no plans on making an offer for the Brazilian this summer.

The statement reads:

“Given the constant information linking the PSG player Neymar Jr. with our club, Real Madrid CF wants to clarify that there are no plans to make any offers for the player,”

“The relationship between the two clubs is extraordinary so that if at some point Real Madrid were considering signing a PSG player, the first thing the club would do would be to make an official approach.”

Real’s statement comes less than two weeks after they were forced to deny they were interested in signing Neymar following reports regarding a £275m offer in the Spanish press.

“Given the information issued tonight by TVE on a supposed offer of Real Madrid to PSG and player Neymar, Real Madrid CF said that this information is outright false,” it said.

“Real Madrid has not made any kind of offer to PSG or the player.

“Real Madrid is surprised that Spanish public television has been able to broadcast absolutely false information without anyone from this medium has contacted any of the parties to contrast the alleged information that could easily have been denied.”

Arsenal Transfer Target Christian Pavon Signs New Boca Juniors Contract

Featured Image

Arsenal has been handed a transfer blow after Arsenal transfer target signed a new deal at Boca Juniors.

The Argentine giants were keen to increase Pavon’s release clause, which will now be worth around £37.5m.

Barcelona were also interested in the player who featured at the 2018 World Cup for his country.

Christian Pavon’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo said last week

“There is still nothing official from Arsenal,” he told Radio La Red earlier in the month. “Pavon informed Boca’s hierarchy about his desire to stay and play in the Copa Libertadores.”

Whether Emery and Mislintat are able to secure the signing of Pavon or another winger before deadline day remains to be seen, but the Gunners did welcome their fifth signing of the summer on Wednesday.

French youngster Matteo Guendouzi completed a £7m move from Ligue 2 side Lorient and has been allocated the No.29 shirt ahead of the new season.

Nice Manager Patrick Viera Surprised By Mario Balotelli’s Behavior

Featured Image

New Nice manager Patrick Vieira has said he was surprised by Mario Balotelli’s failure to return for pre-season training after claiming he and the striker had spoken on the phone over plans for the new campaign.

Vieira also claimed that Mario Balotelli has put to waste two good years on the French south coast, ahead of his expected move to Marseille on a free.

“It’s a surprise for me,” Vieira told Nice Matin. “I was on the phone to him a few weeks ago and we had an appointment for his return. Unfortunately, he’s not here.

“It’s a shame because he had two beautiful years here, he built a very good relationship with the club and fans, so it’s a shame that it’s ended like this.

“If he wants to go somewhere else, it’s football and there are no problems, but it’s a shame that he wants to spoil the two beautiful years he had here.”

#WorldCupWith360nobs: England Should Be Proud Of Their World Cup Performance – Didier Drogba

Didier Drogba believes England can be proud of their performance at the 2018 World Cup in Russia

England beat Colombia and Sweden in the first two knockout rounds to book their spot in the semi-finals of a World Cup for the first time in 28 years, they, however, failed to progress to the final of the competition with Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Croatia seeing them crash out in the last-four stage.

Didier Drogba, however, has paid tribute to England for their showing in Russia.

“Of course it is [disappointing] because you’re one step away from playing the final. At the same time I think the country needs to be proud of this young generation and what they achieved,” Drogba told reporters.

“I was very surprised and happy with the atmosphere around the team and the media supporting the team. All the country were behind them, giving them a chance, not really believing in it but when they got closer you could see everyone was behind them.

“I was disappointed for them but at the same time I was happy that players like [Ruben] Loftus-Cheek, Marcus Rashford and all these young boys managed to perform at the highest level of competition in the world.”

FIFA BAN: Infantino Issues Strong Warning To Nigeria – “Pinnick Is Legitimate NFF President”

FIFA Warns Nigeria Against Ban, Says Pinnick Is Legitimate NFF President

The world football governing body FIFA has made it very clear that Nigeria risk being banned if the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), as recognized by it, continues to be compromised.

NFF president Amaju Pinnick is facing a challenge to his position from Christopher Giwa, who claims he was elected on August 2014 and, acting on the basis of an interim court order, has taken control of the NFF.

READ FULL DETAILS: Crisis In NFF As FG Sacks Pinnick, Asks Giwa To Take Over

However, ESPN reports that FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, while fielding questions from journalists during a press conference at the Luzhniki Stadium in Russia on Friday, didn’t mince his words as he said that FIFA recognises Pinnick as the NFF president.

He added that the crisis, which has seen Chris Giwa take control of the body, could cost Nigeria a ban.

His words: “Well, Nigeria Football Federation president is Pinnick. He is the elected president,” Infantino said.

“That has been made clear long time ago when the issue came up four years ago and the issue came up again.

“The situation is very clear, we have statutes and regulations that there cannot be interference in the running of associations.

“Of course, for these reasons, Pinnick is working here in Russia in an official capacity.

“He is the president, he is the president for FIFA, he is the president elected by the members of the Nigeria football association.

“And that’s the end of the story. But if any external bodies believe they can change the situation, of course Nigeria risks being banned like it happened in other countries.

“Because we have democratic process and they just need to be respected. It is a very clear cut and simple case as far as I am concerned.

“And we’ve made this very clear and will make it more clearer.”

“Maybe you can help us transmit it if we didn’t come across very clear enough.”

Beyond Kante! The Accountant Who Turned Omnipresent Midfielder

Featured Image

Meet France’s Kante – The Accountant Who Turned Omnipresent Midfielder

First, the numbers. In the past three seasons, N’Golo Kante has played 129 club matches for Chelsea and Leicester City, scoring four goals and providing seven assists. In roughly the same time frame, he has played 29 matches for France, with a goal and an assist. So he’s not a goal-scorer or goal provider.

He has got a total of 21 yellow cards in that same period, and not a single sending-off – so he’s not really a defender either, with those last-ditch tackles, taking one for the team.

At 168 cm – shorter than Xherdan Shaqiri, shorter than Tuesday’s opponent Dries Mertens – you could miss him on the pitch amid the muscled-up giants of the modern game.

And yet, in those three seasons, Kante has seen his market valuation go from 9 million Euros, when Leicester signed him from French club Caen, to 36 million Euros, when they sold him to Chelsea, to the 100 million Euros Chelsea are now reportedly demanding of any club that wishes to sign him now.

N’Golo Kante has been one of the breakout stars of the 2018 World Cup and if France win it all, he’ll have played a major part.

In those three seasons, Kante has won the Premier League title twice – with different clubs – and been voted player of the year by his Premier League peers and by the English football writers’ association, each a difficult constituency to please.

On Tuesday, Kante was the wall standing between Belgium’s star-studded attack and the French goal they couldn’t penetrate.

So, for those who’ve come in late, who is N’Golo Kante and why is he important to club and country?

The second part first. Kante’s role, in one line, is to stop the opposition’s attacks before they become dangerous, anywhere on the pitch, and to then start his own team’s movement forward before the opposition has time to organise itself. It sounds simple and complex at the same time – how could one man do both jobs, and all over the pitch?

And that’s the key to Kante: His ability to be wherever the danger is – or, actually, a second before the danger arises. That explains those facts above: He is not interested in scoring goals, he is not necessarily the player who will pass to the scorer either. His job is to anticipate, intercept, pass, anticipate. As France’s coach Didier Deschamps said on Monday: “He is an essential part of our plan. You don’t want to just steal the ball from your opponents. Kante uses the ball, he has a lot of trajectories for his passing.”

Deschamps would have an affinity with Kante; he was dismissed as the water carrier in his playing days by Eric Cantona – his sole role being to pass the ball to his team-mates. Kante is the water-collector and carrier. The ultimate firefighter.

So how does his play help his team? Basically, by enabling swift counter attacks. Leicester City’s game plan was built around the speed of their striker Jamie Vardy, who would run at opposing defences in a quick counter; the key was to get the ball to him as fast as possible once his team had the ball. France use a similar style with the tear away Kylian Mbappe. Chelsea have Eden Hazard. They all need someone who can turn a threatening move against their team into a threatening move by their team in the shortest possible time, before the opposition can recoup.

That’s what Kante does.

He is an unlikely star on YouTube, with clips focusing on his reading of the game and his ability to cover distance at speed. One short clip – 20-odd seconds – features a sequence where he gives away the ball, then wins it back three times in succession each time a team-mate gives it away.

The most common description of Kante is that he’s everywhere at one time. It’s what Steve Walsh, the Leicester scout who spotted him while he was playing in France, says about him. “When I first saw him (playing for French club Caen) I thought ‘is there two of him?”

When Leicester improbably won the Premier League title in 2016, the joke was that they won it with three players in midfield – Danny Drinkwater in the middle and Kante on either side of him.

Those jokes – born out of sheer incredulity – followed him to Chelsea. His club team-mate Hazard, Belgium’s captain and creative force who Kante stopped in Russia, said: “Sometimes, when I’m on the pitch, I think I see him twice. One on the left, one on the right. I think we play with twins.”

Marcel Desailly, a former France captain, tweeted this probably unoriginal joke when Kante was helping Chelsea to the league title in 2017, “71% of the earth is covered by water. The rest is covered by N’Golo Kante.”

That same season, Thierry Henry – who is now on the Belgium coaching staff – wrote of his visit to a Chelsea training session: “I went over to him and stood in front of him. And I poked him in the chest. I had to, just to check if he was real!”

And yet all of this might not have happened. Kante’s football career began late – so late that, at 21, when his current peers were making their first millions, winning their first championship medals, making their first headlines, Kante was still studying for a diploma in vocational accounting.

The problem was his size; no academy in France signed him because of his height. Perhaps it was understandable; there is a picture of Kante, pre-teen, with his local club team-mates after winning a trophy. There is only a couple of years’ age difference but he is about half the height of the others, a baby among boys. Watching him in training today presents a similar image: a boy among men.

But he had quality and he had determination. He finally made his professional debut at 21, for Bolougne against Monaco, and his progress since then has been swift. Yet, like an expert tackler, he has kept both feet on the ground. In an age of football stars driving Ferraris and Lamborghinis, Kante drives a Mini – it was the first car he bought when he moved to England in 2015 and it was easy for him to learn how to drive in it. The story goes that he bought the car only after being persuaded to abandon his plan of running to training every day. There’s a lovely video out there of a doorman at the plush Chelsea Harbour Hotel, where the club team assembles before matches, kitted out in top hat and formal coat and opening the door of the Mini Cooper for Kante.

Kante is also notoriously reserved. Those who’ve spent long spells of time with him – whether team-mates who drove him to training, or a flatmate back in France – remember him saying absolutely nothing. But occasionally he would break into that innocent, gap-toothed smile. He hasn’t given too many interviews but one journalist who has interviewed him, Jonathan Northcroft of the Sunday Times, writes of “the genuineness of the look in his eyes”.

In a game that has at one level become increasingly complex, with multiple systems and formations, Kante keeps things simple. Where the game celebrates its goalscorers, dribblers and creative geniuses, Kante minds the baseline. He never did become the accountant but out on the field, Kante is the one who will ensure his team remains on the credit side.

Ondo Set To Begin Bitumen Exploration

Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State on Thursday said the mining and exploration of bitumen in the state would commence before the end of the year.

Akeredolu made this known in Akure during a courtesy visit by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Amb. Paul Arkwright.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State has a huge deposit of bitumen said to be the largest in Africa and second largest in the world.

NAN also reports that the Federal Government had awarded a mining licence to Ondo State Government on July 18, 2017.

The governor said equipment for mining were already being shipped into the country while Southwest Bitumen Company would soon debut.

Akeredolu further said that Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the state would be better only when economic activities pick up.

“We are trying and the IGR has improved a little, but it could still be better. We will make the best of what we have.

“Ours’ is a civil service state. We are just trying to bring in one or two industries to shore up our IGR,” he said.

Earlier, Arkwright said the governorship election scheduled to hold on Saturday in Ekiti State must be free, fair, peaceful, credible and acceptable to all.

Arkwright said he would lead a large group of observers from the British High Commission in Abuja and Lagos to monitor the exercise.

He urged security agencies to ensure residents of Ekiti were protected before, during and after the election.

“Security personnel have the responsibility to ensure the safety of lives of every citizen of the state.

“Citizens of the state should be allowed to freely vote according to their conscience for any candidate of their choice and their votes must also be made to count.

“We do not support any political party, but we do support a credible process and we are here to observe that,” he said.

The ambassador added that he was in Ondo State to discuss some of the economic opportunities available in the state.

He pointed out that creating jobs, especially for the youths, would go a long way in developing the state and boosting its economy.

“More young Nigerians are fast coming up into the job market, so creating jobs and investing in employment opportunities for them is a priority for me.

“Bringing British expertise and companies into the state are also ways to help reduce the rate of unemployment in the state and the county at large,’’ he said.

Arkwright further stated that the British government would assist the state to revive its cocoa industry.

Fiat: Angry Italian Workers “Strike” Over Ronaldo

Featured Image

Juventus’ signing of Ronaldo for around €112 million ($130 million) has angered workers of Italian automaker Fiat, with the workers vowing to down tools.

The workers at the Fiat Chrysler plant in Italy are preparing to embark on strike after the car company decided to pay Cristiano Ronaldo’s huge amount following his move from Real Madrid to Juventus.

While both the football club and the car-maker are controlled by the Agnelli family through their holding company, the workers are angry because they believe the huge sum spent on Ronaldo would have been better spent investing in Fiat.

The USB (Unione Sindacale di Base) Union, which is leading the strike, said that the Agnellis would have been better served helping the lives of workers, “rather than enriching only one.”

“It is unacceptable that while the (owners) ask workers of FCA… for huge economic sacrifices for years, the same decide to spend hundreds of millions of euros for the purchase of a player,” a statement from the union said.

“The owners should invest in car models that guarantee the future of thousands of people rather than enriching only one,” it added.

p class=”mol-para-with-font”>Fiat factory workers began to protest the decision on Thursday afternoon by plastering anti-Ronaldo posters on walls of buildings in Pomigliano, Italy.

Daily Mail reports that the strike will begin on Sunday at 10pm local time (9pm UK) and will go through until Tuesday evening at 6pm (5pm UK).

The USB union called for the strike at the Melfi plant (one of seven in Italy) but the impact is expected to may be limited with the union only representing a section of workers for the company.

Ronaldo moved from Real Madrid to Juventus this week. The deal could be worth €300 million ($349 million) when wages are included.

However, football finance expert Rob Wilson, of Sheffield Hallam University, said Juventus should earn more than enough money from Ronaldo to cover the transfer fee and his wages.

He added: “The marketing leverage that Juventus will be able to create will be significant. Added to that the likelihood that he will strengthen the team, it seems plausible that they will be more successful domestically and qualify routinely for the Champions League. That means more sponsors, more TV money and more prize money.”

Police Barred From Operating In Mufti In Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday, July 12, warned that any policeman who carries out operational duties in mufti will be sanctioned.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Mr. Edgal Imohimi, made this known during the 3rd Stakeholders’ Security Meeting on Security Policing, organised by the Area ‘D’ Command, Mushin, with the theme: ‘Policing the Community by the Community.’

Imohimi, however, disclosed that only certain policemen were allowed to wear jackets with the inscriptions of their units on them.

Imohimi said: “Henceforth, no policeman should carry out operational duties in Lagos in mufti without police uniform. The only units allowed to wear jackets with the inscription of his unit on it are the Anti Cultism unit, Anti Kidnapping unit, RAIDER; and the Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad, FSARS.

“Every other policeman on operational duties must be in uniform. They will only be in mufti only if they are attached to the investigation unit of the command.

“We don’t want any policeman to cause us any embarrassment.”

In an attempt to buttress what he has said with action, the Command boss revealed that the two policemen, who allegedly assaulted a lawyer last week in Ikoyi area of Lagos, would be demoted in ranks, for wearing plain clothes to effect the arrest of the legal practitioner.
