Fishermen React As Ghana Ban On Fishing Starts On August 7 | Fine Is $2m

The Government of Ghana has placed a one-month ban on all fishing activities across the country’s coasts, stating that the wholesale ban takes effect in August 2018.

Elizabeth Naa Afoley Quaye, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, who confirmed this at a press conference in Accra, on Friday, stated that the ban takes effect from August 7 to September 4, this year.

The Minister said although August had been touted as the bumper season, the same period has been described as the perfect high food production for fish to eat.

“The fish consume food rapidly, grow quickly and spawn. The maximum spawning potential is often in August every year.”

Pulse Ghana also quoted Quaye as warning that fishermen who are caught at sea during the closed season will be handed hefty fines.

According to her, government will ensure strict compliance with the one-month ban, adding that defaulters will be fined between $500,000 and $2 million.

She said in addition to the fine, the equipment of the offenders will also be confiscated by government.

“A person who engages in fishing during a closed season declared, commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of not less than $500,000 and not more than $2 million in respect of a local industrial or semi industrial vessel or 100 penalty units and not more than 500 penalty units in any other case and in addition, any catch, fishing gear or vessel or any combination of them used in the commission of the offence maybe forfeited to the state,” Mrs. Afoley Quaye explained.

The directive, which was was first issued last month, from the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MOFAD), is expected to affect all industrial trawlers in the country.

It is understood that the objectives of the implementation of ban are in keeping with Ghana’s Fisheries Management Plan and to help in reducing the excessive pressure and over exploitation of fish stocks.

To ensure adherence to the directive, the Control and Surveillance at the Fisheries Commission, Navy, Marine Police and the Fisheries Enforcement Unit will conduct regular patrols on Ghana’s waters.

However, some members of the Ghana Inshore Fisheries Association at the Bosomtwi-Sam Fishing Habour in Sekondi staged a protest during the weekend against government’s decision to ban fishing activities next month.

The country’s fishing communities say they strongly oppose the government’s decision to impose a one-month ban on all fishing activities.

“The month of August is the bumper season and it’s wrong for the government to ban fishing activities during the period,” they asserted.

Modern Ghana quoted some as saying that they had never witnessed a ban on fishing activities since they started fishing in the sea many years ago.

‘I’ve Been Given A Red Card’ — Ortom Withdraws From APC

In what seems to be a proverbial way of announcing his departure from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State on Monday declared that he has been given a “red card” by his political party.

Ortom, who stated this at the inauguration of a Special Adviser to Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Jerome Torshimbe, disclosed that he is now floating and awaiting any party to admit him.

“As for party, I have been given red card and I’m outside the pitch. So, if I have been given red card and I’m standing outside, I’m a free man.”

“So, I don’t know what will happen next; but I’m waiting. If approached, then I will tell the Benue people that I’m joining another football club.

“I’m a child of destiny and it’s only God that will decide what I will be,” Ortom said.

The governor, who decried the challenges facing the state, enjoined the people to be united so that development would come to the state.

“Many people have been wondering that though we dedicated the state to God, we are still facing challenges; but all these challenges that we see today, we shall see them no more.

“All that we are required to do is not to begin to be wayward in our conduct, but to move to the righteous side of God. Once we do that, things will work out for our good.

“Looking at what is happening to us, sometimes I’m tempted to think that we are dying like people who do not have God. But we must choose the path of walking with God, obeying and serving him.

“If we do that and ensure that His values get into our hearts and we work with him, development will be inevitable. Let us work and encourage those things that can develop us.

” We need to come together and not allow party or ethnicity to divide us.”

“We Dated For Six Years” – DJ Jimmy Jatt Reveals How He Met Wife

Featured Image

Legendary Nigerian DJ, Oluwaforijimi Adewale, popularly known as DJ Jimmy Jatt has opened up on how he met his wife, Jennifer.

In a recent interview with PUNCH, DJ Jimmy Jatt revealed that he met his wife when he was 22 years of age at a party where he was performing and their courtship period span up to six years.

While narrating how he met the love of his life, the father of two girls said;

“We met at a party. Where else should a DJ meet a lady? Also, don’t mind the Yoruba who say a wife you meet in a dance house will later dance away. It is a big lie. My friend met his wife in the church and she is gone.

I met mine at a party, we danced and we are still dancing. When you tell people you met a girl in the club, they would have a wrong impression of her. But the club is not the devil’s place of hangout; it is just a fun place.”

On how he convinced her to marry him;

“It was a progression. I dated my wife for six years before we got married. We never planned to get married from the start. When we met, I was very young. I was 22. ,I thought she was pretty and she thought I was sociable. Before we knew it, we had spent years together”.

Speaking further, DJ Jimmy Jatt stated that at the time he married his wife, DJ’s were perceived as unserious and wayward.

In his words;

“For her parents to even accept her to marry a DJ, I must commend them. The truth is that no one would like his or her daughter to marry a DJ at the time I got married to my wife, but this made me determined because I knew people expected me to disappoint and I wanted to make a point that being a DJ didn’t mean one would be wayward.

People thought a DJ was unserious, unreliable and irresponsible. I needed to show that I was not all they thought of me. I feel I have done well in that direction. We have been married for 22 years.”

Tragedy As Gunmen Kill 4 Policemen, Set Corpses Ablaze In Edo

Saturday, July 14, was a tragic day in Edo state after four policemen of the Sabongida-Ora division of the Nigeria Police Force were ambushed and murdered by unknown assailants at Oke-Ora and Avbiosi in Owan West Local Government Area of the State.

Panic As Gunmen Kill 7 Police Officers In Abuja

It was gathered that the policemen who were on routine security patrol were shot as they were about to alight from their Toyota Hilux patrol van on Saturday evening around 6pm.

The patrol vehicle was said to have been set ablaze with the bodies of victims inside burnt beyond recognition even as their weapons were allegedly taken away by the assailants.

It was also learnt that the gunmen later fled the scene before the arrival of a team of policemen from the Sabongida-Ora Police Division.

Narrating the incident to newsmen, a community member, who witnessed it, disclosed that one of deceased policemen managed to come out of the vehicle but died few minutes later.

The source said, “Just as they (police rescue team) arrived, the next thing they saw was smoke. It was not really possible to say exactly what happened.

“But the first people that arrived there were able to see somebody coming out from the burning vehicle. He happened to be one of the shot policemen. But he died; he came out with the last spirit of a man and fell by the side of the vehicle.

“Apparently, what people are looking at is that they (deceased cops) did not come out of the vehicle before they were shot.

“Perhaps, they (assailants) were prepared for them. The vehicle was not involved in an accident because they (victims) could have come out of it.”

Also speaking, the Chairman, Owan West Local Government Area, Mr. Frank Ilaboya, said:

“From information available to me, the policemen were about to alight from their vehicle when the assailants opened fire on them.

“They were said to have set their vehicle ablaze and took away their guns. I cannot confirm whether they were armed robbers or not.

“As I speak with you, the communities in the area are in total confusion. However, I have convened an emergency security meeting for this afternoon (Sunday) to look at the issue because there is no eyewitness that can give an account of what really happened.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chidi Nwabuzor, said he had yet to be briefed about the incident.

“I just received the information from the media. We are yet to be briefed,” he said.

Fayose Reacts As EFCC Taunts Him |”We’re Expecting You Soon”

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has reacted after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) taunted him following the failure of his preferred candidate, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, at the polls.

The anti-graft agency had threatened to arrest him via a Twitter post it released on Sunday, July 15, over an alleged failed poultry project.

In the tweet, that has already been deleted as of the time of writing this report, the EFCC reminded Fayose that his tenure is coming to an end in less than three months, coupled with the loss of his immunity. It further urged the governor to begin to prepare to visit the commission.

Fayose Reacts As EFCC Taunts Him |”We’re Expecting You Soon”The commission hinted that investigation into Fayose’s alleged N1.3bn poultry project during his first term from 2003 to 2006, would be reopened and the prosecution would be able to continue

The tweet read, “The parri (party) is over; the cloak of immunity torn apart and the staff broken.

“Ekiti Integrated Poultry Project/Biological concepts Limited N1.3bn fraud case file dusted off the shelves. See you soon.”

The tweet was however met with outrage from a large section of Nigerians as they accused the anti-graft agency of being unprofessional and fighting a one-sided anti-corruption war.

In his reply, the undaunted governor said he will not abscond from Nigeria when his immunity from criminal prosecution elapses in October.

“He is not afraid of anything. What are they going to do to him. Is EFCC the court of law?” Mr Fayose’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, told newsmen on Sunday night.

“The governor will hand over when the day comes in October,” Mr Olayinka said, adding that “and if it is necessary that he should go to the EFCC for questioning after leaving office, he will go and meet them.”

Saraki And Buhari: ‘Politically-Sinless’ Before The Law

Saraki And Buhari: ‘Politically-Sinless’ Before The Law by Ademola Adeoye

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Governments (especially those ones practicing same systems of government as ours) that work prolifically in saner climes—are working productively with three arms: Executive, Legislative and Judiciary. In Nigeria, I opine that our type of government that is supposed to have three arms have been amputated by those who are in the corridors of power, serving themselves, their wives, children, siblings and their cronies, and I am very sure that every right thinking Nigeria would agree with me. The question is; how can a nation without healthy arms move from 3rd world to 1st?

This piece was written by Ademola Adeoye. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

On the condition that you want to be sincere, what arm of government can you say is working for the good of the common man in Nigeria? Is it the Executive arm of government? Is it the Legislative arm of government or the Judiciary? Over the years, lawlessness and greed have amputated those three arms of government. Until the three arms of government are completely restored, Nigeria would continue to remain as she is.

A few days ago, Senator Bukola Saraki was declared guiltless by the highest court of competent jurisdiction in the land. Truth be told, I have no issues with the judge who declared the man sinless. The problem is with the thoughtless people who put the case together—wasting tax-payers money! It was a mere media trial that had no depth. For over 1000days, Saraki was called corrupt without any tangible evidence. If I were him, I would sue everyone behind his slow on the uptake travail—starting with the chairman of the EFCC.

When Saraki’s case started, we all knew that it was political. We all knew that it was connected to the unusual and defiant way he chose to climb to the highest seat in the National Assembly. We all knew that they were trying to pay him back in his own coin and now that they need everyone on board to ensure the second coming of PMB to the highest seat of power in the land, they would do anything possible to set anyone free, even if the person did steal the whole of Nigeria years back.

Now that a court of competent jurisdiction has declared the man sinless, it becomes very wrong for anyone to say that he is corrupt. It is not about your opinion and mine; it is about what courts of competent jurisdiction say. As far as I am concerned, when it comes to the only quality (integrity) that Buhari’s worshippers run with on our streets, there is no difference between Buhari and Saraki before the law. They are both political saints. All their sins have been washed away in the river of nothingness. Isn’t that interesting?

To you, Saraki may not have integrity of heart (politicians rarely have it), but I am so sure that even the blind can see that he is not lacking in (what I have chosen to call) skillfulness of hands as PMB. He has led the Senate luminously. He has led everyone in the Senate as one. Since he became the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I have not heard of any major crisis, rocking the boat of that house. Under his leadership, they all speak as one. I am talking about the Senate where the APC senators are in the majority!

The Executive arm of government that PMB presides over, they hardly speak with one voice. The vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo would say one thing in the morning and in the afternoon; PMB would say something entirely different. One minute, Buhari would speak on an issue and a few minutes after, his handlers would twist it, saying something different. One minute, PMB’s handlers would say he did not take ill; a few minutes after, PMB would say he took ill. On Sunday, a man who erred would be suspended by a team member and on Monday, same man would be reinstated by the team lead, Buhari. Arguably the most confused arm of government on earth!

I prefer Saraki to Buhari, because it is clear as water that he’d make a better president. You said that? Yes, I did, because he has shown that he is more able to lead, and the highest court in the land has said that he is not corrupt. Buhari is politically-sinless and he is also politically-sinless! PMB and Saraki are at par within the context of being politically-sinless, though he is higher than PMB when it comes to being able to lead. And when the highest court in the land said someone is guilty, who are we to say he is guilty?

On the day Senator Bukola Saraki was declared politically-sinless, PMB tried a little to patronize him and our courts—pretending that he believes in all our courts of competent jurisdiction, but if he truly believes in them, why is the current administration still keeping Col. Sambo Dasuki without being tried, especially when both local and international courts have ruled that he should be released? The current administration is a very lawless one and it is impossible for same administration to—truly fight corruption without falling flat on its own face.

The Pastor of the Household of God Church, Rev. Chris Okotie, has once again declared his intention to contest Nigeria’s highest position with the current ruler in next year’s presidential election.

The prominent cleric had contested the presidency three times earlier on the platform of the Justice Party (JP) in 2003 and 2007, while in 2011 he contested on the platform of Fresh Democratic Party (FDP).

On the three “failed” occasions, he said he received a divine mandate to enter the race.

But during last Sunday service in his church in the Oregun area of Lagos, he told the congregation that he had re-emerged from his political hibernation, based on his conviction that Nigeria needed a credible, dependable and a trustworthy man to lead.

The cleric, who posited that the problems bedevilling Nigeria were not political, said he believed that the solutions to such problems were neither in the hands of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) nor the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said he had indeed written to the national chairmen of the two main parties, urging them not to field any presidential candidate for next year’s general elections but to adopt him (Okotie) as a consensus presidential candidate.

The cleric urged the APC and the PDP to support his proposed “Government of National Reconciliation and Reconstruction.”

It reads: “Nigeria has become a divided and segregated society like never before. We have become polarised by ethnicity, we have become balkanised by religious fundamentalism; we have become fractured by political insensitivity and leadership disability.

“I have re-emerged from my political hibernation to contest the office of President in the forthcoming elections. I am fully persuaded that Nigeria needs a man who is credible, dependable and trustworthy. A God-fearing man who is embroidered with compassion and love for (this) country. A man who will be readily accepted as a symbol of national unity, who can bring genuine reconciliation and guarantee peace and tranquillity in our nation.

“A man who is completely insulated from the variegated conflicts that mark the antecedents of our major political actors. A man who can apply the principle of malice towards none and charity for all; who can invoke a pan-Nigerian philosophy to reject the partisan provincialism of finger pointing at this time when Nigeria is threatened by existential adversaries. A man with the requisite intellectual capacity and moral perpendicularity. I believe that the benevolent grace of God has telescoped these virtues into my person, to prepare for such a time as this.”

“Nigeria is in dire need of restructuring. Our federalism is simply terminological inexactitude. It is a realistic piece of fakery. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is obsolete, retrogressive and subversive to the Nigerian cause. It can no longer subsist as a legal protocol to guarantee the peaceful coexistence of autonomous ethnicities. No extant or subsisting government can right these aberrations, for obvious reasons of parochial party considerations and entrenched partisan rivalries within the polity.”

“My mandate, therefore, will be to set up an interim government which I have christened GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL RECONCILIATION AND RECONSTRUCTION as the mechanical instrumentality for the crystallization of the new Nigeria of our dreams. It would be predicated on a new concept of Aboriginal democracy. Our current democracy has been hijacked by elitism, mysticism and Satanism.”

“Aboriginal democracy will focus on cultural historicity, evolutional modernity and global relativity as the necessary ingredients of our evolutional political indigenisation. Under this system, the current legislature would merge with the judiciary to create a unique judicature that administers justice and shares the enactment of legislative responsibilities with the Presidency. This would save us the huge cost of running the National Assembly and obviate all the paralyzing debates that often stalled the passage of bills.
In sincere humility and deference to our democratic institutions, I appeal to the APC to subscribe its support to this ideal by adopting me as a consensus presidential candidate at the next elections. I ask the APC, respectfully, within the confines of conventional propriety, to temporize and observe a peaceful hiatus in the commonality of the Nigerian brotherhood; and embrace me as a consensus remedial facilitator. This of course is tantamount to a paradigm shift and the only way forward. I have extended the same overtures to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).”

“There is an intrinsic resilience embedded in our national psyche which must now be summoned to strengthen the feeble hands of discouragement and re-ignite hope in the Nigerian fraternity. This is our reasonable service. This is the season. This is the time to demonstrate our love for Nigeria. Indeed, love is coterminous with sacrifice.”

“I am fully persuaded that when posterity recalls our voluntary capitulations for the love of our great country, it shall be said that there were giants in Nigeria in those days.
May the blessing of the God of heaven be vouchsafed to you in the plenitude of His grace.

Rev. Chris Okotie
#Okotiesletter”

Bear in mind that after months of speculations, President Muhammadu Buhari on April 9, officially informed the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that he will be seeking the party nomination to fly the party flag in the 2019 presidential election.

Another Nigerian Killed By Gunmen In South Africa

The Nigerian community in South Africa has expressed shock over the killing of another Nigerian, Martin Ebuzoeme, by unknown assailants in that country.

The President of Nigerian Union in South Africa, Adetola Olubola, confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, that the victim was killed in Yeoville, Johannesburg around 7:30 p.m. on July 12.

Nigeria Fumes As Gunman Kills Another Nigerian In South Africa

The killing occurred barely 24 hours after the visit of South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, to Nigeria.

Mr Ramaphosa had during his visit on July 11 said that the killing of Nigerians and other foreign nationals in the country was an act of criminality, not specifically targeted at Nigerians.

”The killings are caused by high level of unemployment among the youth as well as other social factors emanating from long apartheid misrule.

”Government is however, doing all best possible to bring it down,” Mr Ramaphosa had said.

The Nigeria Consul General in Johannesburg, Godwin Adama, said that latest killing did not have anything to do with xenophobic attacks.

Mr Adama told NAN on phone from Johannesburg that the killing happened in a crime prone area of the country.

”The man was killed by unknown gunmen and has nothing to do with xenophobic.

“The place is a crime prone area and those kind of assassinations happened often in that area.

”There is no investigation that showed that it was xenophobic.

”Within a year here, we have about 16,000 murders which do not necessarily have anything to do with any national of a particular country,” he said.

NAN reports that killing of Nigerians in South Africa had been on the increase in recent times.

Before the latest one, there was the assassination of Ozumba Tochukwu-Lawrence, by an unknown gunman at 10 Koppe, Middleburg, Mpumalanga, South Africa, on July 6.

Another Nigerian, ThankGod Okoro, was also reportedly shot dead in Hamburg, Florida West Rand, Johannesburg, on April 9 by the South African Police Flying Squad.

There was also the killing of Clement Nwaogu in April, a father of two, who was burnt to death by his assailant.

The wanton killings of Nigerians in South Africa had sparked a number of protests there.

For demanding justice on behalf of their fallen compatriots, 14 of the protesters were taken into custody and branded drug peddlers.
