ITALY

Luka Modric has opened up regarding his potential summer move, making it clear there was only going to be one outcome: “No, I am at the best club in the world, where I want to be. I am very happy to be here and nothing else. I want to continue working and doing things well as I have done in the last six years.” (TuttoMercatoWeb)

Thursday’s Champions League group stage draw has been hailed as favourable for both Juventus and Roma, with the former facing Manchester United, Valencia and Young Boys. The side from the capital take on Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen (Gazzetta dello Sport)

Inter Milan and Roma were not as fortunate and it was a feeling backed up the former Italy manager Fabio Capello: “Inter really got the worst of it. Napoli had a very bad draw too and I think in both those groups it’ll be a three-way battle for the two qualifying spots. It’ll need a great Napoli and Inter from the very start to put themselves in a good position to go forward.” (Sky Sports Italia)

SPAIN

Real Betis have not given up hope in signing Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko on deadline day. He has not been part of the club’s matchday squad this term, the English side prefer a permanent deal worth around €16m, while the Spanish club would be keen to land him on loan. (Sevilla Info)

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Giovani Lo Celso will spend this season on loan with Real Betis. The 22-year-old played 48 times under Unai Emery last season but does not figure prominently in Thomas Tuchel’s first-team plans. It has been suggested a €30m purchase option has been included. (Marca)

FRANCE

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Paris Saint-Germain have agreed a deal to sign full-back Juan Bernat from Bayern Munich. It is believed the deal will see an end to their pursuit of Filipe Luis of Atletico Madrid. (L’Equipe)

Without a club since the end of his contract with PSG, former Newcastle United attacker Hatem Ben Arfa is heading for Rennes. Nice had hopes of convincing him to make a return to the club, but the Breton club has the advantage. (MaxiFoot)

Lille’s Brazilian midfielder, Thiago Mendes, could make a switch to the Bundesliga on Friday. The 26-year-old is linked with a €15m move to Wolfsburg. Lille still need to raise funds to avoid any financial sanctions. (L’Equipe)

GERMANY

Lyon were set to sell Maxwel Cornet to Wolfsburg, with a five-year-deal being agreed, but at the last minute, the Ligue 1 side’s president Jean-Michel Aulas has put a stop to the deal, saying they want to find a replacement for the attacker before letting him go. (Kicker)

Wole Soyinka Reveals Buhari’s Pernicious Doctrine

Buhari’s Pernicious Doctrine, By Wole Soyinka

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Here we go again! At his first coming, it was “I intend to tamper with Freedom of the Press”, and Buhari did proceed to suit action to the words, sending two journalists – Irabor and Thompson – to prison as a reward for their professional integrity. Now, a vague, vaporous, but commodious concept dubbed “national interest” is being trotted out as alibi for flouting the decisions of the Nigerian judiciary. President Buhari has obviously given deep thought to his travails under a military dictatorship, and concluded that his incarceration was also in the “national interest”.

The timing is perfect, and we have cause to be thankful for the advance warning, since not all rulers actually make a declaration of intent, but simply proceed to degrade the authority of the law as part of the routine business of governance. We have been there before. It should be of mere interest, not despondency, that this latest proclamation of dictatorial recidivism has also been made before an assembly of officers of the law, the Nigerian Bar Association. We expect a robust response from the NBA as part of its conclusions.

There is no short cut to democracy. The history of law, even where uncodified, is as old as humanity. Numerous rulers have tried again and again to annul that institution. Sometimes, they appear to succeed, but in the end, they pay heavy forfeit. So does society. The Rule of Law however outlasts all subverters, however seemingly powerful. If the consequences for society in defence of the Rule of Law were not so costly, any new attempt would be merely banal and boring, hardly deserving of attention. We know, historically, where it will all end.

Inter Milan Tried To Sign Luka Modric Without Even Paying For Him – Florentino Perez

Featured Image

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has claimed that Inter Milan tried to sign Luka Modric this summer without paying for him.

Inter Milan have been in hot pursuit of Luka Modric since the World Cup, so much so that Madrid sent an official complaint to FIFA, alleging Inter contacted the player illegally over a potential move.

In return the Milan based club undertook legal action against La Liga president Javier Tebas, who had criticised the Serie A club’s pursuit of the 32-year-old Croatia star.

Now Perez has lifted the lid on Inter’s approach and claimed they tried to get him on the cheap.

Perez told journalists: “I’ve never seen a club want to buy our 10 without paying.

“It’s the first time this has happened to me in my life.”

Modric, who also won the Golden Ball at this summer’s World Cup, picked up the UEFA award last night after beating Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah to the top prize.

“I am in the best club of the world,” Modric said last night. “I want to be here.

“I am not happy, I am super happy being here, very quiet and I just like to keep working doing well things like last six years.”

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham on a season-long loan deal.

Abraham scored five goals in 31 Premier League games for Swansea last season and was also called up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate

‘Villa are a big club that belongs in the Premier League and I’m here to help them achieve that,’ said Abraham.

‘At this stage of my career, I need games and this is a great place for me to come and showcase my talent. I can’t wait to get started.’

He was a substitute in Chelsea’s Community Shield defeat to Manchester City, has struggled to secure first-team football at Stamford Bridge.

However, Abraham does already have Championship experience having spent the 2016-17 campaign on loan with Bristol City, scoring 26 goals for then.

Maurizio Sarri’s Pre Match Press Conference Vs Bournemouth: Speaks On Victor Moses, Loftus-Cheek, Europa League Group

Featured Image

Latest injury news…

“The situation is the same as last week. Cesc is still out. Actually, he is working in water. We hope that next week he will be able to work on the pitch, I think. I am sure the injury is not serious, but he has pain out of his knee. So it’s a bit strange, but nothing serious. The pain is still there, so for him, now, it’s impossible to run on the pitch. He’s only able to run in water.”

Have you spoken to Loftus-Cheek any more?

“No (more words). But I can say that I am really very happy with him because, in the last 10 days, he has improved a lot. So we’re really very happy with him.”

If he continues to improve, will get more chances in the Premier League?

“I think that he will be important for sure. Starting in September, we will play every three days, so Loftus will be very important and useful for us.”

Will any players leave today?

“I think that we don’t need anything at the moment. Out, I don’t know. I don’t know. Maybe Tammy. It’s up to him. I am not able to guarantee to him a spot at the moment, but if he wants to remain, I’m really very happy with him. He’s very young for a striker, and can improve more. I think it’s up to him.”

Thoughts on your nomination for Manager of the Month and Marcos Alonso up for Player of the Month?

“No reaction for the moment. There are four coaches nominated, so that means I’m 25% of the coaches (nominated). Alonso played very well three matches. I think he’s a very good player and can improve in the defensive phase. He can improve. Of course (I have told him).”

Is Alonso’s defensive play a concern?

“Not worried, no. He has physical qualities at the top level, so I think he can do more in the defensive phase but I’m not worried. He’s a very good player in the offensive and defensive phases, but I think he can do more.”

Is Loftus-Cheek fighting for a Premier League spot?

“I think so. It think so. It’s not easy to play here, because here there are 20, 25 very good players, so it’s not easy to play in the starting XI, but I think if he will improve more, he is ready to play from the beginning.”

You said it would take a while to implement your style, surprised you have started so well?

“I’m very happy with nine points in three matches, but I think also that the table now is not so important. Now it’s important to work and improve more. We have the potential to improve more.”

Victor Moses, what is his future?

“But because he changed the position on the pitch… last season he played (at right wing-back), and now we want him to play like a winger. We changed the position and, in the new position, he needs to improve. But it’s only a question of time, I think.”

How much do you know about Bournemouth?

“Yes. I think very well of them. Eddie came in Empoli four years ago for three or four days, and we stayed in Empoli together for three or four days. Last season with Napoli we went to Bournemouth for a friendly match, so we stayed together for three or four days. I know him very well. He is a very interesting young coach.

“I think he will make a mark in the English football in the future. They are very dangerous opponents for us, I think, because they are well organised, they are dangerous in counter-attacks, so I think the match will be very difficult for us. But I think that we want to be in control of the match. We want to try to gain points.”

Did Eddie learn a lot from you…

“He didn’t need it.”

Surprised he has done well?

“No, I’m not surprised because he’s a very good coach. Maybe the club knew it. So it’s not by chance.”

Thoughts on the Europa League draw?

“I don’t want to speak or think about the Europa League now. I want to concentrate on tomorrow’s match. I will have time to study these opponents during the international break, I think.”

Did you speak to Gary Cahill about his international retirement?

“I don’t want to discuss on Gary about his personal decision.”

Jorginho and his start

“I think that Jorginho, in this moment, is a very important player for us. He is used to playing my football so, in the first period of the season, he is very useful for me. But I think he is also very useful for his team-mates.”

Why are England players not playing at the moment?

“Because these English players were in the World Cup and returned at the beginning of August, so it’s normal they haven’t played in August.”

Why doesn’t Loftus-Cheek play more?

“Because he has to improve, just in order to play my football. He has great qualities from a physical point of view, and technical point of view. I think he needs to improve from the tactical point of view, nothing else.”

Is it hard for English players to play for top teams?

“I answered the same question in Italy: why is it so difficult for Italian players to play at the big clubs in Italy? I think it’s normal. It’s difficult to play here, difficult to play in Juventus, because in this club there are 27 or 28 great players. So it’s difficult.”

How has Kante dealt with his attacking role?

“My opinion is that Kante is a great midfielder, and I think that he is able to play in every position in my midfield. It’s not a problem for him. But I was surprised from the technical qualities of Kante.”

Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp Criticises Simon Mignolet After He Questioned His Decision Not To Sell Him

Featured Image

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has criticised the club’s second choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet after he publicly questioned the club’s decision to let Loris Karius leave this summer.

Simon Mignolet had been expected to be Leave The Reds after falling down to third in the goalkeeping pecking order behind new arrival Alisson Becker and Karius, whose mistakes in the Champions League final proved to be the beginning of the end for him at Liverpool.

However, Karius was instead sent on a two-year loan to Besiktas which is expected to become permanent, prompting Mignolet to describe Liverpool’s decision as “bizarre”.

“Discussing your individual problems in public doesn’t make too much sense,” Klopp told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

“It was still okay. If he was happy to be a number two then I wouldn’t know him – he’s a top professional.

“If you want to say something, say it to me directly than to a newspaper. He’s on pretty good pay at Liverpool by the way.”

I Remain One Of The Greatest Managers In The World – Jose Mourinho

Featured Image

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that he remains “one of the greatest managers in the world”.

The Manchester United boss has come under scrutiny during the early stages of the season following reports of unrest behind the scenes and back-to-back Premier League defeats.

However, Jose Mourinho once again pointed to his past record as evidence that he is among the world’s elite in his job, reiterating that last season’s second-placed finish was one of his biggest achievements, despite ending up 19 points behind champions Manchester City.

“I am the manager of one of the greatest clubs in the world but I am one of the greatest managers in the world. I had great success last season and that’s probably what you don’t want to admit,” Mourinho told reporters.

“Two seasons ago we had a fantastic season because we won the Europa League. This season and last everybody thought Atletico Madrid was amazing because they won the Europa League after being knocked out of the Champions League.

“We won it because it was our level. We are the last team in England to win a European competition. I’m the only manager to win eight titles, in Italy, Spain, England. And by winning eight titles – not small titles or countries – my second position last season is one of my greatest achievements in football.”

UEFA To Commence Use Of VAR In Champions League From Next Season

UEFA To Commence Use Of VAR In Champions League From Next Season

UEFA Champions League Draw 2018: Man United, Real Madrid, Liverpool Group Stage Fixtures Revealed

It has also been introduced in Spain and France this season, with those leagues following on from the Bundesliga and Serie A, although the English Premier League has been more cautious.

“For me, VAR is not completely clear for now, but we also know that there is no way back anymore, technology will come sooner or later,” Ceferin told journalists in Monaco, where the Champions League group-stage draw was held on Thursday.

“The plan for now is to use it from the next season, with the first match which is the Super Cup.”

That match is due to be played in Istanbul on August 14, 2019, and the Champions League would then bring in VAR from the playoff round the same month.

“When we are ready we will use it, but it is not so easy because we have to choose the provider, it is not easy to organise a competition across the continent with all the referees, so we have some issues,” said Ceferin.

There had been reports that VAR could come in from the latter stages of this season’s competition, but UEFA’s Slovenian president now says it is unlikely to be used even in the final in Madrid next June.

“I’m not ruling it out but for now it doesn’t look like it will happen,” he admitted.

Ceferin acknowledged that VAR “worked quite well” at the World Cup, but UEFA’s biggest concern is how they can effectively run the system in a competition spanning an entire continent.

Luka Modric Wins UEFA’s Men’s Player Of The Year Award

– ‘Very complex’ –

At the World Cup, FIFA used a centralised system based in Moscow, yet doing the same thing with matches being played in different countries is far more complex.

“It’s really much more problematic than it looks. We really have a huge territory, we have different countries. We don’t know yet how to do it,” added Ceferin.

“The plan is to do it next season, but let’s see what happens, I don’t want to predict anything 100 percent.”

Nevertheless, it seems that UEFA will wait a further year before the Europa League follows suit.

Giorgio Marchetti, the organisation’s deputy general secretary, admitted that VAR was “obviously not impossible but very complex, and requires a lot of planning”.

“The Europa League would follow exactly like GLT (goal-line technology), because of this complexity of the operations,” he said, confirming that the idea would be to wait another season.

Meanwhile, reports in Germany on Thursday indicated that UEFA were considering bringing back a third continental club competition, two decades after the Cup Winners’ Cup was scrapped.

Sport Bild said the idea was to start a 32-team tournament from 2021, reducing the number of participants in the Europa League from the current 48 down to 32 and further opening up continental competition to sides from smaller countries.

But Ceferin said: “They are just discussions, is it better to have 64 in the Europa League or 32 and 32? They are just discussions.”

– Restoring competitive balance –

The 50-year-old, who succeeded Michel Platini as UEFA president in 2016, looks set to be re-elected early next year, with a vote taking place in Rome in February.

The increasing dominance in the Champions League of an elite few raises ever greater concerns about competitive balance, something Ceferin says is his “greatest challenge” going forward.

He is nevertheless optimistic that a breakaway, closed league for the super rich will not happen.

“I think, as much as I spoke to the big clubs, that it’s clear to them that the competition only between the big clubs will not happen and would be very boring, and they understand that for the development of football they have to share some money,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari will be departing Nigeria for China on Friday, August 31, to participate in the 7th Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) scheduled to hold September 3 – 4, 2018 in Beijing.

The President’s first engagement in the country will be an interactive session with the Nigerian Community in China at the Nigerian Embassy.

According to a statement issued by the President’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, the President will deliver his remarks as the current chair of ECOWAS at the “High-level Dialogue between Chinese and African leaders, business representatives and African entrepreneurs”.

‘‘We send our gratitude to the Chinese for all their support to Nigeria. Since independence, no country has helped our country on infrastructural development like the Chinese. In some projects, the Chinese help us with 85 per cent payment, and soft loans that span 20 years. No country has done that for us.’’

He will be accompanied to Beijing by his wife, Aisha, who is scheduled to participate in a Spouses’ Programme on China-Africa at the Great Hall of the People, under the theme, ‘‘Joining Hands for a Future of AIDS.’’

Buhari Welcomes German Chancellor Angela Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday morning arrived Nigeria and was received by Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja.

Her visit to Nigeria marks the final part of her three-day trip to West Africa countries: Senegal, Ghana and Nigeria with a focus on strengthening economic development and containing illegal migration.

Before her arrival, Nigerian Ambassador to Germany, Yusuf Tuggar said Nigeria’s strong economic relations with Germany over the years necessitated her visit.

Tuggar further stated that security, particularly in the Northeast, would feature in the discussion between the leaders of the two countries.

“We need support to address security issues, particularly in the North Eastern part of Nigeria. As people are returning to their villages and towns and begin to normalise their means of livelihood, which is mostly farming and trading, there is a need for global support to rebuild communities,” Tuggar said.

“But one of the major challenges in recent times has been how to attract German medium-size businesses to invest in Nigeria. The backbone of the German economy is essentially made up of medium-size, family-owned businesses. There are quite concerns about how to de-risk their investments,”

He further revealed that this sort of step requires cooperation and support by both governments to facilitate the investment and minimise risk.

“This, of course, fits into Nigeria’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan and the Presidential Enabling Business Council. On the German side, they know the importance of these medium-size companies and they try to support them and see that they take an increasing role in a globalised world.”

The ambassador said that some business persons on Ms Merkel’s entourage would sign agreements with some Nigerian companies.

“At the moment, the German Government is also doing everything to push out their small and medium- scale businesses to take their place in an increasingly globalised world.”

“Nigeria wants to take advantage of the areas Germany has comparative advantage. Some German companies are interested in Nigerian agriculture sector. This is about how to strengthen our agricultural sector to create prosperity for Nigerians, especially, for young people,” Tuggar said.

Burton Albion Complete Loan Signing Of Chelsea Goalkeeper Brad Collins

Featured Image

Burton Albion completed the loan signing of Chelsea goalkeeper Brad Collins until January.

Burton Albion have been forced into the transfer market after thier first choice goalkeeper Stephen Bywater was ruled out for at least a month with a shoulder injury.

That has resulted in Burton moving for 21-year-old Collins, who made 45 appearances for Forest Green Rovers during the last campaign.

Manager Nigel Clough told the club’s official website: “We are still awaiting scan results for Stephen but at the moment we are thinking anywhere between four and eight weeks, so we have chosen a good young Chelsea keeper who had good experience out on loan last year with Forest Green.

“I spoke to Mark Cooper (Forest Green manager) about him and he recommended him and said he really grew up in his time there last season. By the end of the loan spell, he had become more of a man by playing in League Two and he will start on Saturday.”

Ed Woodward Reportedly Monitoring Jose Mourinho’s Training Sessions At Manchester United

Featured Image

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has started watching some of the first-team squad’s training sessions at Carrington, according to a report.

Manchester United have endured their worst start to a Premier League season since 1992, with back-to-back defeats having been suffered against Brighton and Tottenham

That has resulted in the pressure building on Jose Mourinho, and there have been mixed reports regarding his future at Old Trafford .

According to The Sun, concern over the team’s recent performances has resulted in Woodward taking a look at the work and mood at the club’s training facilities.

The report says that Woodward and Mourinho still possess a strong relationship, but a third successive defeat would put the club and Mourinho under further scrutiny heading into the international break.
