Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao, making him the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.

Kepa arrives at Stamford Bridge after his release clause of £71.6m was met, with the deal surpassing Alisson’s £66.8m move to Liverpool.

He will replace Thibaut Courtois, who has joined Real Madrid.

Kepa is Spain’s number two behind Manchester United’s David de Gea and has one international cap.

He has spent the past two seasons in Bilbao’s first team, making 53 La Liga appearances

Upon completing his move to Chelsea, Kepa Arrizabalaga said: ‘It’s a very important decision for me, for my career, and also for my personal life.

‘So many things attracted me to the club, all the titles the club has won, the other players, the city, the English Premier League. It’s an accumulation of things, and I am very glad Chelsea has decided to trust me and to take me in as well.’

Chelsea’s Director of football Marina Granovskaia added: ‘Kepa is a talent we have admired for a long time and we are extremely excited about his arrival. He has already demonstrated fantastic quality and consistency and will be a big part of any success Chelsea have in the coming years. His long-term contract reflects the belief we have in him and we look ahead to the coming seasons with an enormous sense of optimism.’

Matteo Kovacic To Join Chelsea On Loan From Real Madrid

Featured Image

Mateo Kovacic will join Chelsea on a season-long loan deal from Real Madrid as part of the deal that sees Thibaut Courtois move to the Spanish capital

Mateo Kovaci arrives at Stamford Bridge hoping for more regular first-team opportunities after three years spent on the fringes of Madrid’s starting XI.

Kovacic joined Madrid from Inter Milan for £27 million in the summer of 2015 and was part of the team that claimed three Champions League titles in four seasons, as well as winning La Liga in 2017

Speaking last week, new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri revealed that he still wanted one more midfielder to round out his squad before the deadline.

“I talk with the club about the market but only one or maybe two times, not more,” he said. “I spoke about positions and characteristics but no names. So, I don’t know. I think we need something, but maybe only a player.

“We have very good midfielders, but maybe a midfielder with different characteristics [would be a good fit].”

Olympique Lyon winger, Memphis Depay has revealed his desire to play for a bigger club.

The Netherlands international joined the Ligue 1 club from United in January 2017 and enjoyed a successful 2017/18 season, scoring 19 goals in 36 matches.

Memphis’ performance last season has attracted interest from big clubs in Europe, with AC Milan interested in his signature.

“I’m happy at the moment,” Depay told reporters after Lyon’s International Champions Cup match against Chelsea.

“Of course I want to make the step to a bigger club but we will see when that is.”

Memphis was disciplined by Lyon after failing to report for pre-season training on time, leading to increased speculation over his future.

“As soon as I have to play here, or as soon as the league starts, I will give 100 per cent,” said Depay.

“If you ask any player they want to play in big leagues at big clubs.

“If a big club comes, I’ve got to discuss that but other than that I’m happy in Lyon, I’m happy with the players and the quality that we have.”

Featured Image

Former Liverpool star, Dirk Kuyt has backed Liverpool defender, Dejan Lovren to shake off his critics and have a great season.

The Croatia international has been the recipient of jibes from critics, due to his inconsistent defending.

Lovren helped Liverpool to the Champions League final and had a brilliant showing in the World Cup with Croatia.

And despite his foibles, Kuyt is convinced that Liverpool fans will see the best of the centre-back this term.

“Lovren is a great guy. I am big Liverpool fan, follower on social, and I saw Dejan joined the team,” the former Netherlands international explained to reporters in Zagreb.

“He will have a great season and I believe Liverpool can fight Man City for the title this season.

“I enjoyed watching Croatia at the World Cup and how passionate they fought, not giving up for one second. They deserved a little more, but France are a terrific team and reaching the final is, in itself, amazing.”

Agent: Witsel Snubbed Manchester United For Dortmund

Featured Image

Paul Stefani, Alex Witsel’s agent has stated that the midfielder opted for a move to Dortmund, snubbing United because he would not be appreciated at Old Trafford.

The midfielder has joined Dortmund from Tianjin for a fee of €20 million, after just one season in China. Stefani stated the Belgium international had offers from two top leagues in Europe.

However, he steered him away from joining Jose Mourinho’s side after the Premier League side showed an interest.

“We chatted for a moment, Axel says: ‘Maybe I want to leave China’. I say to him laughing: ‘Axel, I promise that I will come up with something really great!’” Stefani told  Het Laatste Nieuws .

“I remembered that a few months earlier I had been to Dortmund, where I met someone from the club. I call that man and he brings me into contact with the management.

“Sports director Michael Zorc and CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke invited me to come and talk at a time when Axel was at the World Cup in Russia. There I heard that Dortmund were looking for a player like Witsel.

“I explained to them that the Portuguese lawyer of Witsel has negotiated a buy-out clause of €20m with Tianjin. That sounded like music to them, because they thought that Tianjin would ask for an amount of around €60m for Axel. When the transfer later started rolling, the Chinese still tried to get out of that buyout clause, but it was conclusive.

“There were other candidates. Manchester United wanted him, Napoli too. But I told Axel: ‘At Dortmund you are the number one, at Manchester you are one of the many… and at Napoli too’.”

But Witsel was not the only midfielder United were chasing, according to Stefani, who says they also had Chelsea star N’Golo Kante high on their shortlist.

“I know from a very good source that Mourinho said he wanted Witsel, but not in the first place. N’Golo Kante topped his list. Eventually Axel said: ‘Do me a favour and finish it as quickly as possible, because I really want to go to Dortmund’.”

Luiz: Kepa Arrizabalaga Will Live Up To €80 Million Tag

Featured Image

David Luiz has backed Kepa Arrizabalaga to live up to his world record fee, as he prepares to complete his move to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have agreed to pay the 23-year-old’s €80 million release clause, as he is set to become the world’s most expensive goalkeeper.

And as Thibaut Courtois is edging closer to a move to Real Madrid, Arrizabalaga will slot in to the role as no. 1 under Maurizio Sarri.

And David Luiz insists the 23-year-old is exactly the kind of keeper the club needs if it is to continue winning silverware.

“He is a great keeper, that is why everybody is talking about him,” Luiz told reporters. “The financial side – every club in the world spends money, not just Chelsea.

“The numbers don’t matter, we are happy because Chelsea are always doing the best for the club.

“When you play for Chelsea you have to think about titles, it doesn’t matter the name of the competition. We have to always try to win.

“That has to be the mentality of every single player when you play for a big club like Chelsea. We are going to fight for that.”

The Bank accounts of the Akwa Ibom state government have been reportedly frozen by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“The governor was shocked when he was briefed about the development,” the source said on Wednesday.

“He has demanded explanation from the EFCC. Our suspicion is that our big friend who just departed is behind the issue but we will fight this injustice.”

The development is coming barely a day after Governor Samuel Ortom raised an alarm that the EFCC has frozen the state’s bank accounts, trapping workers and pensioners’ salaries in a state beset by hardship following months of deadly attacks by suspected herdsmen.

Presidency Speaks On Buhari’s Role In Osinbajo’s Dismissal Of Daura As DSS DG

Presidency Speaks On Buhari’s Role In Osinbajo’s Dismissal Of Daura As DSS DG

The Presidency on Wednesday, August 8, clarified the role of President Muhammadu Buhari in the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo’s decision to sack Mr. Lawal Daura as the Director-General of the Department of State Services, saying it was a unanimous decision.

Behold The New Director General Of DSS, Matthew Seiyefa

Mr Osinbajo had on August 7 directed the termination of the appointment of Mr Daura and directed him to handover to the most senior person in the organisation.

The dismissal follows the siege on the National Assembly on Tuesday by DSS officials. The presidency said the siege, which has been condemned by most Nigerians, was not authorised.

Osinbajo Fires DSS Boss, Lawal Daura

This has even led to many asking who ordered Daura to invade the National Assembly and deny lawmakers access into their chambers?

Who is the famed “order from above” that one of the DSS operatives quoted to have given the order?

However, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, has refuted claims that Osinbajo’s decision to sack Daura had anything to do with power struggle between him and his principal.

Speaking with state house correspondents after the meeting of the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday, Adesina restated that it was not possible that there would be no unanimity when it came to such a decision.

His words: “What we will like to say for the umpteenth time is that the presidency is one. Whenever the President is proceeding on vacation, he transmits power to the Vice-President, who then becomes the acting President. On this occasion, he also did that.

“So the acting President has all the powers of a President. Now it’s a matter then of decency and we know that the acting President is a decent man. There is no tussle for power; there is no tough battle between him and the president. When something like what happened yesterday happens, there will be unanimity. There is no way there won’t be unanimity on that kind of decision. It’s not something that will be discussed with the press, but know that there was unanimity in the decision.”

Real Madrid Boss Julen Lopetegui Refuses To Comment On Thibaut Courtois Transfer, Praises Keylor Navas

Julen Lopetegui has refused to comment on Real Madrid’s move for Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Real Madrid could wrap up the signing of Thibaut Courtois on Thursday

Rather than discuss any potential deal for Courtois, though, Lopetegui instead focused on praising “phenomenal” Keylor Navas, who has been first choice at the Bernabeu for the past three seasons.

Asked for an update on Courtois following Madrid’s 2-1 friendly win over Roma in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Lopetegui told reporters: “As I’ve said, I don’t speak about players who do not belong to Real Madrid.

“I’ll only speak about the ones who are at Real Madrid and today is no different. Did you see him today? Keylor is our goalkeeper. He’s here. There is no other goalkeeper we can talk about. Keylor, Kiko [Casilla], Luca [Zidane] and [Andriy] Lunin are the ones I can speak about.

“Keylor is phenomenal. He’s been phenomenal all pre-season. He’s an extraordinary goalkeeper. He’s delighted to be with Real Madrid and we’re delighted to have him with us.”

INEC Chairman Reveals Who Will Decide Winner Of 2019 Elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, has predicted that Nigerian youths, with their population, could be the ones to determine the outcome of the 2019 general elections.

Don’t Just Pray And Wail, Get Your PVC (See Details Here)

Yakubu also revealed that the Osun State governorship election, slated for September 22, would feature the highest number of contestants in the history of governorship elections in Nigeria so far.

These comments were made on Tuesday, August 7, while he spoke during a courtesy visit to the management of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), which hosted the INEC Youth Votes Count Campus Outreach Initiative.

Mr Yakubu revealed that judging from the figures emanating from the on-going Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, coupled the voting pattern noticed in the 2015 general elections, Nigerian youth currently constitute a sizeable percentage of the total population of registered voters that could be a game changer in the 2019 polls.

He averred that since the commencement of the CVR exercise in April 2017, the commission has registered close to 11 million Nigerians.

His words: “By the time we suspend the CVR exercise on August 17, the number of registered voters will be well over 11 million. If we add this to the existing Voter Register of 70 million, and by the time we go into the 2019 general elections, we would have had over 80 million voters.”

“From what we are seeing so far (in the ongoing CVR), 2019 is going to be the year of the youth. Quite a large number of those that have registered to vote are the youth, meaning the young boys and girls between the ages of 18 and 35. When we did the analysis of the 2015 presidential election results, the youth also played a very important role.

“So, we are here (Bayero University) to continue to encourage them. We have already announced the date for the suspension of the CVR, which is August 17th. We have been registering eligible Nigerians for the last 16 months (since April 27, 2017).

Again, Female Photographer Snaps Fashola Photography Foundation Top Prize

For a second successive time, another budding female photographer has emerged winner of this year’s photography contest organized this year by the Fashola Photography Foundation (FPF) and curated by Temple Management Company (TMC), a pan-African talent agency and event company.

Ebun Akinbo, a young talented full-time photographer based in Lagos shone high among a group of 10 finalists to snap up the top prize of Canon Camera as well as an exclusive exhibition at the Lagos Photo Festival holding in October this year.

The duo of Oyedeji Fawaz, 2nd runner-up, and Nnamezie Asogwa, 1st runner-up won, Apple Mac Book Air and Nikon Camera, respectively. Other contestants who participated include Anthony Onyejesi, Ralph Eluehike, Adedokun Oluwatoyin, Akhenebiri Joshua, Adekunle Bryan, Christopher Nelson and Stephanie Ugwu.

It would be recalled that last year, the duo of Vivian Nwobi and Kehinde Yusuf emerged winners and underwent a month-long training course at the New York Film Academy.

The winners were unveiled at a private ceremony which held in Lagos and was hosted by children of the late Alhaji Ademola Fashola. They were led by Honourable Minister of Power, Works and Housing (PWH), Babatunde Raji Fashola, his wife, Dame Abimbola Fashola, brother, Tokunbo Fashola among other members of the family.

While accepting the prize, Ebun said, “I want to thank my colleagues, without you, I wouldn’t have won. You brought out my real self. It never looked like a competition, it was like a team bonding exercise. I am excited to be a winner.”

Commending the winner, ex-Governor Fashola saluted her humility and sportsmanship for acknowledging her co-finalists. He added, “I would like to say this especially to my siblings that women have really taken over.  “While the prizes were announced, nobody felt any sense of shortcoming but that of fulfilment for having participated. For me, that is a very important spirit and value for our nation today and I feel privilege that my family is involved with something that is contentious yet not acrimonious. They are very strong values. A sense of competition; the nation needs it. Our communities and homes will thrive with competition and it will increase productivity.”

It was the climax of a one-week free intensive workshop where the budding photographers were exposed to street photography, documentary-making, video art and portraiture, as well as developing curatorial and technical skills.

The exercise was helmed by professionals including Uche Okpa Iroha, Charlotte Langhorst, Adeola Olagunju, Uche James Iroha, Isaac Emokpae and Tam Fiofori. Other facilitators include Emmanuel Oyeleke, Oyinda Fakeye, Abraham Oghobase, Lukman Olaonipekun (Lukesh) and Logor Oluwamuyiwa Adeyemi.

Benue Youths Allege Plot To Assassinate Governor Ortom

Benue Youths Allege Plot To Assassinate Governor Ortom

The TIV Youth Organisation (TYO) has alleged that there is a plot to assassinate Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State.

Nigerian Guardian reports that President General of TYO, Comrade Timothy Hembaor, has averred that the plan was being perfected by ‘Abuja Forces’ “as the next action after the impeachment move (against the governor) seems to have failed.”

Benue Governor Ortom Formally Dumps APC, Joins PDP

Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday in Makurdi, the state capital, Hembaor disclosed that information at their disposal indicate that the elimination plot was mooted long ago, “but its implementation was pushed to 2019 when, by the plotters’ calculation, Ortom would no longer be governor.”

He claimed that it was on this premise that the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership was earlier instructed to deny the governor a return ticket come 2019.

Court Prevents Governor Ortom’s Removal

The recent defection of the governor to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hembaor stated, had supposedly distorted the hatching, hence the decision to move for his immediate removal from office by the legislature.

He alleged: “The plotters were believed to have carefully developed ways to stoke a political crisis in Benue as well as supervise another programme in the state so that if Governor Ortom could not be impeached, the coordinated crisis and sponsored mayhem would be escalated enough to declare a state of emergency.”

He continued that “in all of this, the cries of the people of Benue and those of other Nigerians did not make any impression on the president.

“We want to put it on record that the life of Governor Ortom is at risk and if anything happens to him, President Muhammadu (Buhari) will be held responsible.”

“We call on the President Buhari to henceforth withdraw the police that he has mandated to terrorise and intimidate Governor Ortom.

“We also demand that the President should direct the Inspector General of Police and the DG of Department of State Services (DSS) to withdraw their men from the State House of Assembly.”

ASUU Threatens Fresh Nationwide Strike

Featured Image

ASUU Threatens Fresh Nationwide Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to down tools as it disclosed that it could no longer guarantee that its members would continue to work if Wole Babalakin negotiating for the Federal Government was not sacked.

Dr Wale Babalakin is the Chairman of the Government Renegotiating Team of the 2009 ASUU/Federal Government of Nigeria Agreement.

But after a three-day National Executive Council meeting, which held at the University of Calabar in Cross River State, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, is saying that anything could happen if nothing was done about a letter it had already written to the Minister of Education over the development.

The union said the peaceful renegotiation and implementation of the union’s demands had collapsed over the alleged arrogance of Babalakin, who was said to have made a mockery of the renegotiation process.

Ogunyemi further said the union might soon embark on strike if Babalakin was not replaced.

“Recall that in January 2017, the NEC meeting of ASUU held at Bayero University, Kano, welcomed the reconstitution of the government renegotiation team to enter into a renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU/FGN Agreement, which was long overdue,” The Punch quoted him as saying

He continued: “The renegotiation commenced in March 2017. At the inauguration of the committee, the Minister of Education declared that he expected the renegotiation to be completed within six weeks. Since then, for over 14 months, our union has had a series of negotiation meetings but it has been a fruitless exercise.

“The Chairman of the Government Renegotiating Team, Dr Wale Babalakin, has constituted himself into a stumbling block in the process of the renegotiation. He has arrogantly exhibited the I-know-it-all attitude and also conducted himself as a judge, instead of a negotiator.

“With unwarranted arrogance, he has disregarded the cardinal principles of collective bargaining, deliberately slowed the process and made a mockery of the core tenets of industrial democracy. He has arrogated to himself the power to decide matters that should be collectively debated, analysed, and agreed upon by the two parties.

“He has also consistently attempted to substitute core constitutional provisions of Nigeria on education, including university education, by market principles of trading in and purchasing higher education, putting Nigerian children in debt in order to acquire higher education. This situation is not acceptable to the union.

“ASUU has tried through several entreaties to make him see reason and return to the path of collective bargaining and respect for the constitutional provisions on education to no avail. Since March 2017, a period of over fourteen (14) months, the discussion has hovered only on funding and Babalakin’s insistence that a tuition regime must be introduced into the public universities in Nigeria.”

He said NEC took reports on the status of the implementation of the September 2017 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action and the FGN/ASUU renegotiation which commenced in March 2017 and resolved to condemn in strong terms the Federal Government’s failure to faithfully implement many items on the 2017 MoA.

The NEC also approved the decision of the ASUU team to withdraw from the re-negotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement as a result of Babalakin’s insistence on the commercialisation of tertiary education in the country.

They also resolved to update ASUU members on the failure of the government to keep its promises on the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and September, 2017 MoA and meet in due course to consider the next line of action.
