Everton also confirmed the signings of former Shakhtar Donetsk winger Bernard on a free transfer, alongside fellow Barcelona player Yerry Mina for £28.5m.

Borno Governor Honors JAMB 2018 ‘King’ With N5Million Scholarship

Borno Governor Honors JAMB 2018 ‘King’ With N5Million Scholarship

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State has granted a scholarship award worth N5million to Galadima Zakari, the highest-scoring candidate in the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), to enable him study Electrical Engineering at Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State.

JAMB: Borno Indigene Scores Highest (364) In 2018 UTME (See Top 5)

The development comes after the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on August 5, announced that Zakari from Biu in Borno State scored 364 points to emerge the overall best in the 2018 UTME.

Impressed by Zakari’s performance, Shettima invited the boy and his mother, Jummai Zakari, into the council chambers where he offered a seat to the young man he called ”King of JAMB”.

The governor further honoured him with N5 million full scholarship under the Borno State Ministry of Higher Education.

GCE Exams: WAEC Releases Timetable For 2018 Nov/Dec WASSCE | Download Here

He said Israel’s performance has proven to the world that the people of Borno State are ”not known for the Boko Haram conflict alone; but also in academic and scholarly excellence”.

“I am fixating on his achievement because it has also put me particularly in the spotlight. An orphan, raised by a single mother a son of Boko Haram-ravaged Borno who triumphed against all odds.

“He has proven to the world that where there is will, there is a way; he has proven to us that adversity should not lock us down; adversity should bring out the best in people. We have to identify with this young man; we have to identify with the boy and his family, fundamentally for two reasons; we must avoid the tyranny of the majority. I am a Kanuri man and a Muslim; this young man, is a Bura-man and a Christian – but above all he is a son of Borno. We must at all times have the generosity of courage and magnanimity to be inclusive.

“I am an advocate of inclusivity, I am an advocate of tolerance and accommodation. This is the fundamental reason we invited the Zakaris so that we can all come together and celebrate this young man who is a symbol of excellence, resilience against all odds, so that any young man from Borno can be inspired.

“Incidentally the young man has secured an admission into Covenant University and the Borno State Government would want to take full responsibility for his full scholarship. I am in the last lap of my time in office as a governor, so I want to pay the full five years scholarship for him; even though who ever that would succeed will sustain whatever commitment we have made, but I felt that when opportunity beckons like this one should utilise it optimally. So to keep the mind of his mother at rest, we are going to pay the full package of his scholarship now.

“The full five years scholarship include the cost of books, cost of living in the campus, and all other related expenses. While we are giving you the offer letter today, the commissioner for higher education will hand you a cheque of N5 million naira which covers all that he needs to study electrical engineering at the Covenant University till graduation.

“And I want you the mother to make the payment upfront so that this will not be affected by any kind of inflation.

“If not because it is a little bit late, I won’t mind taking him to Harvard or Oxford to pursue his degree; but we will still not lose hope in exploring those opportunities.”

Mateo Kovacic First Words After Completing Season-long Loan Move To Chelsea

Featured Image

Chelsea have today finalised the signing of Mateo Kovacic from Real Madrid on a season-long loan deal.

After signing on loan in west London, Kovacic told the club’s official website: “I am really happy and excited to be here at Chelsea. It is an amazing feeling.

“I will try to do my best for this club.

“It is a new league for me, the beginning is always tough but I am sure the coach and my new team-mates will help me and I am looking forward to a great season.”

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: “We are very happy to welcome Mateo to the Chelsea family.

“He is a perfect fit for us this season, his style is well suited to how Maurizio wants to play and we are sure he will prove to be a valuable asset for the club.”

Soon after his arrival last night, Kovačić also gave a brief first interview to Chelsea TV (again, exclusive to the official app, The 5th Stand — free on iOS and Android), in English, wherein he reflected on a busy summer and an exciting move to London.

“I am really happy, excited to be here at Chelsea. It’s an amazing feeling. […] I will try to do my best.”

“I hope I will come straight to the team, to show my best, and that for me now is the most important thing. […] It will be nice to play here of course but there is a coach who needs to decide and I need to give my best to prove myself.”

Kovačić is of course looking forward to playing with Kanté and Jorginho, but he’s also looking forward to the challenge of the Premier League. When asked about the relative ease with which Real can win trophies when compared to Chelsea, he gives a perfect answer.

For sure [with Real it’s easier] but I think this team is winning a lot in the last years so I am coming to a team that is winning all the time. I am happy to be at Chelsea. Great club, amazing city and like I said before, I will give my best for the team and say a huge thank you to Chelsea for giving me this opportunity.”

One of Mateo’s teammates both at Real and at the national team is a certain Luke Modrić, who used to live in London as well and once came close to making the move to Stamford Bridge. As it turns out, Luka gave some good advice to his younger friend just now.

“I am speaking to Luka always. He is of course happy for me, sad that I am leaving because we are very close there, but London is an amazing city. […] He said the Premier League will be tough in the beginning but it is a nice league, amazing football, the stadiums are full and I will enjoy it.”

Now he just has to get into match shape. Arrizabalaga may be expected to play on Saturday already, but Kovačić probaby won’t be quite as ready.

I didn’t train a lot in Madrid now because I wanted too badly to come to Chelsea so I didn’t have too many trainings, but I will give my best to be ready soon.”

Thibaut Courtois Deletes Farewell Message To Chelsea After Getting Abused By Fans

Featured Image

Real Madrid latest summer signing Thibaut Courtois posted a farewell message to his former club Chelsea through his Facebook page following his exit on Wednesday night, only to later delete the post after it was targeted with abuse from angry Blues fans.

Many Chelsea supporters have not liked the way that Courtois has engineered his move to the Spanish capital after he failed to report for training at the start of the week

With the transfer now completed, Chelsea went out to spend a world record €80m fee to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao as a replacement

Thibaut Courtois has now been branded a ‘snake’.

And it was that abusive response to his statement, which included the sentence, “I want to thank the fans for their great support over the years. I hope you understand that being closer to my kids was considerable in my decision,” that is thought to be behind the decision to remove it.

ASUU Commences 2-Week Warning Strike In LAUTECH, Disrupts Exams

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has commenced a two weeks warning strike.

ASUU Threatens Fresh Nationwide Strike

The industrial action is also said to have disrupted the ongoing second semester examination for 2017/2018 academic session at the institution – which is jointly owned by both Oyo and Osun state governments.

ASUU in a statement jointly signed by the duo of Comrades Biodun Olaniran and Toyin Abegunrin after its congress on Wednesday declared that LAUTECH chapter of the union had gotten approval to embark on the warning strike from the national body of the union.

According to the union, despite the Memorandum of Action, MoA, signed with the management of the school, the governments of the two states are yet to fulfill their own part of the agreement.

#GetYourPVC: Dear Nigerians, You Have Just Days To Register To Vote In 2019 Elections

They maintained that the two states headed by Senator Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (Osun) only paid one out of the eleven months salary arrears owed the workers.

The statement read: “On 13th February, 2018, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) LAUTECH Branch Ogbomoso signed a Memorandum of Action (MoA) with the Governing Council (GC) of the University.

“The signing of the MoA led to the suspension of the 8 months old strike on the 17th February 2018. One of the fundamental clauses of the agreement is the promise of the GC that ‘it will ensure that the governments (of Oyo and Osun states) will be made to be responsive to their legitimate responsibilities (funding inclusive) to the University’.”

“The GC also promised to work out the modality of paying salary arrears, promotion arrears, earned academic allowances (EAA) as well as paying monthly salaries as and when due. Out of eleven months salary arrears owed, only one month had been paid.

“The payment of monthly salary had become dwindling since May and nothing had been paid on promotion arrears and EAA. The Union observed these reneges of the MoA on the part of the GC and the University administration and several correspondences were made to the duo of the University administration and GC to call their attention to the implications of reneging on the MoA.

“It is worthy of note that most of the time, the GC do not reply our correspondence to it and whenever it does, the message has been ‘bear with us until the University finance improves.’ The latest of such correspondent to the GC was on the 5th July, 2018. No reply was made on this correspondence.

“Reviewing the MoA, the union observed that the situation in LAUTECH is not improving because the Visitors to the University are not responsive to their financial responsibilities to the University. The situation becomes unbearable to members of ASUU in LAUTECH, who are being owed 10 months salaries among others. The branch sought and obtained permission to embark on two weeks warning strike from National Executive Council of ASUU.

“The ASUU LAUTECH branch is on two weeks warning strike due to poor funding of the University by the owner states government. Let the owner states remember the masses and give them their social right”.

He however blamed the development on the fact that snatching of ballot boxes and other violent forms of rigging had become almost impossible.

The INEC boss also said the Electoral Act recommends an open secret ballot system which allows voters to cast their ballots publicly.

Yakubu, however, said the commission was exploring the possibility of changing the process of voting without breaking the law.

His words: “First, we must look into the administration of our polling unit, particularly the place where we place the voting cubicle where the citizens vote and the place where we keep the ballot box. Remember the law says it is an open secret system.

“You vote in the cubicle but have to drop the ballot in the open. So, we learnt from experience from previous elections like Edo, Anambra but it wasn’t as pronounced in Ondo. However, we had complaints in Ekiti. As we move to other elections, we will see what we can do in that respect.”

He added: “From the 2015 elections, we have about seven million cards uncollected and by the time you add 11.8 million so far to the seven million, you will end up with close to 20 million cards uncollected. So, we will have to suspend the registration at a point, make the cards available and work with groups to ensure that citizens collect their cards before the 2019 elections.”

Bayelsa Announces N70,000 Incentives For All Pregnant Women

The Bayelsa State Government has announced that all pregnant women in the state, notwithstanding their marital status, will henceforth get about N70,000 each as a form of motivation to use approved health facilities in the state.

The State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said that Governor Seriake Dickson was concerned about the high mortality rate.

Speaking on Wednesday during a briefing, he stated that the move was meant to reduce the rate of infant and maternal mortality in the state and discourage them from attending unapproved traditional birth centres.

It was learnt that the maternal mortality figure stood at about 1,870 per 100,000 births with poor access to communities and hard-to-reach areas due to the extensive riverine terrain, being a major factor.

The Punch quoted him as saying that:

“Some days ago, Governor Seriake Dickson inaugurated the Safe Motherhood Initiative which is one very important programme. We are losing a number of our pregnant women due to cultural practices because they don’t go to the hospital and they are not well informed of what to do.

“We are taking the message to every nook and cranny of our state. We will reach every single community because most fatalities happen there.

“No woman should die during childbirth. We are deploying all our means to sensitise our people. We are going from door to door to get the message to those that matter. As long as you are pregnant, married or not, you are covered.”

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ebitimitula Etebu, said the ministry was adding N4,000 to the N3,000 earlier approved for pregnant women to make it N7,000 in about 10-month period of pregnancy.

Etebu said, “At the level of the ministry, we are going further because about 70 per cent of our people go to primary health centres, they will no longer wait for people to come to them.

“We will go from house to house. Get records and ensure that these women attend our facilities. The governor has said he is giving N3,000 to these pregnant women but we are adding some incentives.

“For coming to the health centres we are incentivising them with N2,000 and at the antenatal, we are giving out another N2,000 and this is to ensure that they are motivated. The traditional birth attendants will also be motivated to ensure that they take these women to where they can get the right care.

“We are giving them money to ensure they do this. The community governance structure will also be brought in. Traditional rulers, community groups etc will be involved. This is a continuous measure. All communities must be reached. We are taking this seriously.”
