#EndSARS: Osinbajo Orders Immediate ‘Overhaul’ Of Notorious Anti-Robbery Unit

Nigeria’s acting president Yemi Osinbajo has ordered the immediate “overhaul” of Nigerian police’s special anti-robbery squad (SARS).

The directive is coming after months of street and social media protests against the police unit which has, over the years, become synonymous with brutality and wanton arrest.

“Following persistent complaints and reports on the activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) that border on allegations of human rights violations, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to, with immediate effect, overhaul the management and activities of SARS and ensure that any Unit that will emerge from the process, will be intelligence-driven and restricted to the prevention and detection of armed robbery and kidnapping, and apprehension of offenders linked to the stated offences, and nothing more,” Osinbajo’s spokesman Laolu Akande said in statement on Tuesday.Osinbajo Orders Immediate ‘Overhaul’ Of Notorious Anti-Robbery Unit

“The Acting President has also directed the IGP to ensure that all operatives in the emerging Unit conduct their operations in strict adherence to the rule of law and with due regard to International Human Rights Law and the constitutionally guaranteed rights of suspects. The operatives should also bear proper identification anytime they are on duty.”

“In the meantime, the Acting President has directed the National Human Rights Commission to set up a Special Panel that will conduct an investigation of the alleged unlawful activities of SARS in order to afford members of the general public the opportunity to present their grievances with a view to ensuring redress.”

Where’s Messi? As Ronaldo, Neymar Feature On FIFA 19 Cover | WATCH TRAILER

For a second consecutive year, Cristiano Ronaldo will front standard edition of EA Sports’ FIFA 19!

However, this time he’ll be wearing the black-and-white pinstripes of his new club, Juventus, the Serie A champions who signed the star forward from Real Madrid for a €100 million transfer fee in July.

VIDEO: Ronaldo Scores His First Juventus Goal – After 8 Minutes

On the Champions and Ultimate editions of the video game, Ronaldo will be joined by Paris Saint Germain forward Neymar on the cover. The Brazilian joined PSG from Barcelona last summer for a record transfer fee of €222 million.

Ronaldo, who was the cover athlete last year, when he was still a member of Real Madrid, becomes the face of the game since it has gone to worldwide covers, rather than differentiating the cover by region.

There is no arguing of Ronaldo’s spot on the cover because he impressed in the last Champions League after emerging the top goalscorer (15 goals in 13 games) as Real Madrid won the trophy for the third year in a row.

However, the obvious player omitted from the EA Sports FIFA front cover is Barcelona star Leo Messi.

Considering the widespread love for the Argentine forward, plenty of fans wont be happy over his omission.

Ronaldo, Messi And Neymar Shortlisted For 2017 Best FIFA Men's Player AwardEA Sports recently revealed a new trailer for FIFA 19, this time showcasing the game’s Active Touch system which promises to revolutionize what you can do with the ball at your feet and open up areas of gameplay that have never been explored before.

According to EA Sports, this new way of receiving, striking, and moving with the ball feels incredibly natural and fluid, allowing gamers to play in fresh, creative ways. Among the features that have been added to FIFA 19’s Active Touch system include multiple means of trapping the ball, feints and new flick animations.

FIFA 19 will include the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Super Cup for the first time.

The game releases on 28 Sept. on all platforms.

‘Sleeping Kidnapper’ Who Overdosed On Tramadol Dies Nine Days After

The Police in Ondo State say a suspected kidnapper who was arrested in a botched kidnap attempt in Owo is dead, following complications from a high intake of Tramadol tablets.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the suspect had been unconscious since his arrest over the August 5 incident at a chemist in Owo.

Kidnapper Who Took Tramadol During Operation Still Sleeping 6 Days After Arrest

Police Public Relations Officer for Ondo State Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, made the death public while speaking with the NAN on Tuesday in Akure.

According to Joseph, the suspect died at Owo General Hospital where medical personnel had battled to revive him.

“The suspect died nine days after we arrested him; we thought he would be revived so that he could help us in our investigation. Unfortunately, he died yesterday (Monday).

“This could be connected with his suspected high intake of Tramadol.

“We are using this opportunity to further educate the public, especially parents, to monitor their wards and the kind of company they keep,’’ he said.

NAN recalls that suspected kidnappers had stormed Chinery Pharmacy in Owo township with the intention of kidnapping the pharmacist.

The pharmacist, on sighting the suspects with arms, was said to have escaped through an exit door at the back of the chemist.

The suspects later snatched a Bajaj motorcycle from one Daodu Wale who came to the chemist to buy drugs.

While one of the suspects fell and was arrested, two accomplices escaped on the motorcycle.

One cut-to-size locally-made gun and 400mg of Tramadol tablets were recovered from the suspect.

He was said to have slipped into a coma since his arrest until his death on Monday evening.

Why Nigerian Graduates Will Continue To Be Unemployable

Why Nigerian Graduates Will Continue To Be Unemployable

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

YOUTH unemployment in Nigeria has been blamed on the youth unjustly over the years. Despite that, it remains a popular discourse in the media, online and offline, the country’s record of youth unemployment keeps getting worse.

This is a problem that poses a grave danger to the sustainability of the nation’s economic development, yet it has attracted nothing more than a talk shop treatment from relevant authority with make-shift programmes like N-Power.

As though the indignity of such schemes is not enough, the older generation also branded Nigerian youth lazy. One of such remarks proceeded from one of those who should be held responsible for whatever the problem with Nigerian youth is.

In his view, the Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Professor Biyi Daramola, believe that Nigerian graduates are unemployed because they lack self-discipline and commitment to the vigorous academic pursuit.

Even if this is the case, the likes of a Vice Chancellor should only say that sorrowfully and with a deep sense of responsibility, not cheerfully washing his dirty linen in the open. Who else should be called to explain the mournful collapse of the competence base of the Nigerian youth if not those who are given the responsibility to provide quality education?

The education of Nigerian students is taken lightly by the government. This is reflected in the recent allocation of budget.

Nigerian education sector has allocated 15 to 20 percent of national budget recommendation by UNESCO.

The global organisation recommended the budgetary benchmark to enable nations to adequately cater to rising education demands.

Unfortunately, President Muhammadu Buhari allocated only 7.04% of the 8.6 trillion 2018 budget to education.

We, then, lie to ourselves when we say we are developing because if a sector in a country is underdeveloped, it affects other sectors of the country.

The total sum allocated to the education sector is N605.8 billion, with N435.1 billion for recurrent expenditure, N61.73 billion for capital expenditure and N109.06 billion for the Universal Basic Education Commission.

The allocation is lower than the 7.4 percent the government gave the education sector in the of N7.4 trillion 2017 budget. Education cannot grow this way, Rather we will have more illiterates, dropouts who will not be fit for the labour market. Due to this, low educational achievement and unemployment are inevitable.

Implementation of the paltry budgetary allocation is even a bigger problem.

Poor funding has been identified as the major reason for the shortcomings in the education sector, especially tertiary education, which has led to frequent strikes by teaching and non-teaching staff since the early 1990s.

Between 1992 and 2017, university lecturers went on national strike 20 times, with the attendant adverse effects on education at the tertiary level.

The industrial actions were embarked on following the failure of the government to implement agreements reached with the academic union.

By the economic standard of today, Nigerian lecturers are not well paid.

Therefore, they are nonchalant about ensuring that their students attain academic excellence.

When lecturers strike, academic calendars of universities are often disrupted, curricula are not covered, and the country is affected.

Consequently, ill-equipped graduates with limited or even deficient knowledge of their area of specialization will be produced.

It should not be newsworthy that such graduates are grossly incompetent youth.

Rather, it should be news if they are actually employable and fit for the job market, considering the collapsed system of education that produces them.

It is not surprising that our leaders have refused to think outside the box since they are less affected. They are not concerned.

They give their children the best education and ensure that they secure white-collar jobs. How then will they think about the unemployed Nigerian graduates?

In the midst of this sorry situation of the Nigerian tertiary education is the growing call for an increment of the tuition of state-owned tertiary institutions.

It is true that what is paid as tuition in those tertiary institutions is quite low.

However, it is exactly what is just right for the extremely poor quality of services provided by the institutions.

There are dilapidated facilities in most universities without maintenance or repair.

Outdated curriculum with which Nigerian students are trained also play a role in their unemployability.

The world is evolving through technological advances and the labour market evolves with it.

Lecturers in tertiary institutions use obsolete teaching schemes most of which are not relatable to the 21st century.

They teach students with knowledge of what was used in getting employment in the 1960s and 1970s without taking into cognizance the fast-paced evolution of science and technology.

I believe if the curriculum is amended or renewed, it is possible for students to be groomed academically, preparing them for the global market. If not, ill-trained graduates can only be unemployed.

But when will these problems be solved? When will the government, leaders, tertiary institutions admit that they are also at fault? Will they remain deaf and we dumb? Education should be taken with so much significance and unemployment of youths should not be a problem.

A food for thought for our leaders will be that they should think more and eat less.

Much intelligent youth will be capable of working in reputable companies and generating more revenue for the economy.

As a matter of fact, youth who secure job earn an independent living and cease to constitute a burden on the economy.

To justify the thesis that Nigerian youth are unemployable because they are unfocused and indiscipline, a number of things need to be done.

The government should allocate sufficient fund to the education sector and implement a dignifying salary scheme for lecturers.

School management should also provide students with access to e-books and printed materials in a 21-century library environment, decent accommodation, update the curriculum for relevance and competitiveness, provide functional laboratory, and restore affordable cafeteria and laundry services and other things that can facilitate learning.

Only then will anyone earn the right to blame Nigerian youth for being solely responsible for their unemployability.

But as long as the status quo continues, Nigerian graduate will continue to be unemployable in today’s competitive business environment that prioritises relevant skills over moribund pre-industrial age skills.

Ghanaians Celebrate Blackness With ‘Vogue Unofficial’

Blackness has evolved into a symbol of power, boldness, and sophistication, from when being black meant playing second fiddle, being inadequate and being captured in one’s self. Voices of all kinds through every channel of arts have particularly been loud on the seriousness of Black issues across the world.

From A-List musicians to movies stars, from big-budget movies to music videos, from magazine covers to social media campaigns, etc…, blackness has taken the forefront in arts and entertainments as a subject to ensure equal opportunities and rights for black people across the world.

As September issues are the most prestigious in the magazine world, @Vogue took Black matters to a more serious level by handing over control to the biggest female artists in the world. With @Beyonce covering US @vogue and being shot by a black photographer and Rihanna @badgalriri fronting the cover of @BritishVogue, Black Excellence just reached another peak.

“Vogue Unofficial” is our recreation of the iconic and historic September 2018 issues of US Vogue and British Vogue. Our take on the covers is our way of paying homage and tribute to two Ghanaian born creative geniuses, @KwasiFordjour, the creative director for @Beyonce ’s September issue for US @Vogue and @Edward_Enninful, the Editor-in-Chief of @BritishVogue, as they take charge of the world of arts and are breaking color barriers.

Through our themes “UNAPOLOGETIC. BLACK.” “INGENUITY. BLACK.”, we re-echo all the messages and values carried by these powerful black women on the cover of these magazines and what it means to all young black women in Ghana and Africa.

Our shoot further explores Blackness as a symbol of INTELLECT, INGENUITY, and SELF-LOVE.

VOGUE UNOFFICIALUNAPOLOGETIC BLACK.

The issue of black exclusion may seem like a western problem, however within Africa, there is a more vicious issue of blackness. Lead movie roles are given to light skin people as its assumed they are more commercial. This has resulted in skin bleaching amongst celebrities and stars to push up their market value. Can we see beauty in the darkest shade of black, can we embrace strength in our melanin, as there is a place for every shade of black.

As depicted, our cover embodies the dark shades of blackness an African can be and the glory that runs through her blackness. She is Graceful, she’s Intelligent and she portrays Self-Love.

The beauty of being African is in the layers and tones of the black complexion. This is for us as Africans to embrace and appreciate our darkest tones and see beauty, power, grace and sophistication in the way we look.

VOGUE UNOFFICIALVOGUE UNOFFICIALVOGUE UNOFFICIALINGENUITY BLACK

There’s been millions of messages, writings, movies, speeches, music and various works of art pushing women’s agenda. Have all these efforts been enough??? Well… Not enough to fully curb the marginalization of women, especially women of Color and portraying them as weaklings.

Equally there’s been millions of women who are changing the world with their ingenuity in their own small or massive ways. INGENUITY BLACK. is a recreation of Beyonce’s US Vogue cover as an embodiment of such finesse, creativity, originality, inclusiveness and inspiration.

We portray black women with our model holding a golden egg to symbolize the birth of unique and innovative ideas. Before great things are birth, we believe a touch of the industriousness, creativity and brilliance makes the difference.

Umahi further gave the corps members who took part in the parade another N2 million and various cash sums to NYSC officials and military officers who trained the corps members.

In his remarks, Umahi urged them not to allow themselves to be used by selfish politicians to truncate the nation’s democracy.

He said: “I am sure you were motivated and sensitised by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on your participation in the 2019 elections.

“Your participation in that important assignment is a rare opportunity for you to contribute your quota towards enthroning credible leadership, good governance and engender peaceful and prosperous country.

“I, therefore, urge you to discharge the INEC assignment with utmost sense of responsibility and good conscience by not allowing yourselves be manipulated by desperate and unscrupulous politicians.

“Do not give in to their antics, desperation and lure of cash or kind, especially when you have to consider that posterity will judge you for the role you will play, either positively or negatively, during the elections.”

The governor said the N400 million will be used to rebuild the road leading to the camp, renovate dilapidated structures, dredge a drainage, regrass the camp’s parade ground, connect the camp to the national grid, provide solar street lights etc.

Another Nigerian University Sacks Lecturer Over Sex-for-Mark Scandal

The management of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, has announced the dismissal of one of its lecturers following his involvement in an alleged sexual harassment of a female student of the institution.

Omananyi Yunusa Adinoyi, who is a lecturer in the Department of Geology, was dismissed after the outcome of investigation into alleged sexual assault on a female student in the department who took a course taught by him.

It was gathered that Adinoyi’s dismissal was approved during the University Council’s 131st meeting.

The Nation quoted a lecturer, who sought for anonymity, as saying that the case has been on for about three months after a committee was raised to investigate the allegations.

It was also learnt that there were discriminatory evidences against Adinoyi as the student involved provided audio recording of their conversation and the act.

“It is not as if he forced her; it was a mutual affair, and we don’t know why the girl blew the lid.

“He was not dismissed because he slept with the girl; the University is angry that the act was committed inside his office because the evidence and tape did not show he forced her.

“It is also not clear that he has not been intimidating the girl since she is a student in his department. And there was no way he could have exonerated himself that he did not use his position to intimidate the student. All evidences were against him,” the source explained.

The Deputy Director, Information and Publications of the university, Lydia Legbo, also confirmed his dismissal.

“Yes, he was dismissed for sexual harassment after investigations proved beyond reasonable doubt,” the spokesperson told Premium Times.

“The news was kept away from media to avoid distraction,” Yusuf Abideen, a student of the institution, said. “In fact, most other departments were not aware. We all saw the resolution.”

A colleague of the victim also said Mr Yunusa’s dismissal would “bring peace to the department.”

“My class governor is a lady but she feels very reluctant when we want to have ‘things’ to do with Mr Yunusa. It got to a time, we felt like impeaching her only to realise that she was avoiding the lecturer because of harassment,” the student said.

“We all got the notice about his dismissal, he disappointed himself,” a senior staffer said.

Also speaking, the University Vice Chancellor said the dismissal of the lecturer will serve as lesson to others to ensure total elimination of sexual harassment in the university community.

Bear in mind that the management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, has announced the sacking of Professor Richard Akindele for allegedly demanding sex from his student, Monica Osagie, to upgrade her mark.

Luka Modric Wants To Join Inter Milan And Be A Star At The Club

Featured Image

Luka Modric‘s agent Marko Naletilic has reiterated that the Real Madrid midfielder is keen on a move to Inter Milan, where he hopes “to be a star”.

Inter boss Luciano Spalletti has acknowledged that his side may have to wait for a deal to be agreed, however, as Real Madrid are holding out for a fee of £670m.

“For whatever reason, Modric wants to be a star in Serie A with Inter. Let’s see,” he told Tuttosport. “I believe that sooner or later Luka will play in Italy. Like a lot of Croatians his age, he grew up watching Italian football.

“The fact Inter Milan tried to sign him and Modric took it into consideration shows the influence Cristiano Ronaldo is already having on Italian football.”
