Saraki ‘Considers’ Unseating Buhari In 2019

Nigeria’s Senate President Bukola Saraki has said he is considering running against President Muhammadu Buhari when Africa’s giant holds elections in February, 2019.

Saraki, who faces a battle to retain his position at the Senate following his defection to the opposition party, made this known during an interview with Bloomberg held at his Abuja residence on Tuesday and published on Wednesday.

The senate president said first, he would need to win the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to actualise his objective of leading the country.

When asked by the paper if he was running, Saraki said:

“I am consulting and actively considering it. I believe I can make the change.”

“The PDP has learnt its lesson from the loss in 2015, and I think unfortunately the APC did not learn from their victory.

“While negotiating with the PDP, we listed a number of issues. We talked about how to sustain and improve the fight against corruption; the issue of providing more powers to the states; inclusion and having a more nationalistic approach on things we do; to continue to improve the environment that will ensure investments.

“We listed a number of items during the discussions with the PDP, and there is a written agreement to that. We trust that we can hold them to that.

“We would ensure that the party is strong on security. The APC too have not done well on the issue of security. We have the opportunity with the right kind of presidential candidate and president to provide the leadership for the party. The party has a good opportunity to lead the country in the right direction.”

To win the PDP ticket at the party’s primaries on Oct. 5 and 6, Saraki would need to beat another presidential aspirant, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who also defected from the APC last year.

Lagos Ranked 4th Cheapest City To Live In The World

Lagos State has once again been ranked but as the fourth cheapest city to live in, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit report on global liveability index.

The is after the country’s commercial and economic hub was ranked the third worst city to live in among 140 cities worldwide.

According to the report, Lagos ranks fourth on the cheapest city to live chart and 130 in the global liveability ranking, ahead of Almaty, Caracas and Damasus.

The report, however, warned that cheap doesn’t necessarily mean “always cheerful.”

Lagos Ranked 4th Cheapest City To Live In The World

“Cheap but not always cheerful. As Damascus and Caracas show, a growing number of locations are becoming cheaper because of the impact of political or economic disruption. Although the Indian subcontinent remains structurally cheap, instability is becoming an increasingly prominent factor in lowering the relative cost of living of a location,” the report said.

“This means that there is a considerable element of risk in some of the world’s cheapest cities. Karachi, Algiers, Almaty and Lagos have faced well-documented economic, political, security and infrastructural challenges, and there is some correlation between The Economist Intelligence Unit’s cost of living ranking and its sister ranking, the liveability survey. Put simply, cheaper cities also tend to be less liveable,” it added.

Nicki Minaj’s Ex-Boyfriend Accuses Her Of Stabbing Him In Heated Twitter War

In what appears to be an alleged domestic abuse incident, US rapper Onika Maraj, popularly known as her stage name Nicki Minaj, has been accused by her ex-boyfriend Safaree Samuels of stabbing him.

While it is understood that the duo were together for almost 15 years, Samuels is accussing the rapper of cutting him up with a knife so badly that he almost died, and that he was forced to tell police it was a suicide attempt so she wouldnt be arrested.

Samuels wrote on Twitter: “Remember the night you cut me and I almost died the police and ambulance had to take me out the crib on a stretcher. I had to lie and tell them I was trying to kill myself so they wouldn’t take you to jail. When things like that start happening more than once it’s time to dip.”

He isn’t pressing charges over the alleged incident, adding: “You know what I still don’t have no hate for you cuz I’m happy in my own mind now.”

In response to this accusation, also via Twitter, the rapper said Samuels was lying although she specifically did not address the domestic violence allegation. She wrote:

“U stole my card & told me you thought it was an account with ‘free money’ that I didn’t know about. On God. God will strike you down & more for lying. Ha! Stop saying u packed & left ! On Jesus u came to my house CRYING BEGGING to go w|me to Europe to the EMA’s. I said NO DUMMY.” She followed up with, “Sherika & I had a bet that soon as you knew meek was bout to come home your crawl back & ya did! came to my house CRYING. JOYCE WAS THERE! My whole glam was there! Left who?!?!”

The rapper, whose newly released fourth album Queen could top the US charts this week, had previously accused Samuels of stealing her credit cards, and of paying for prostitutes during their relationship, in an interview with radio station Hot 97.

Bear in mind that Nicki released her new album, Queen, on August 10th, which follows her 2014 album “The Pinkprint.”

Trouble For Mourinho As Zidane Eyes Manchester United Job

Trouble For Mourinho As Zidane Eyes Manchester United Job

The transfer window may have closed in the Premier League, but there is a rumour that Zinedine Zidane wants to succeed Jose Mourinho as Manchester United manager as the former Real Madrid coach considers his return to football.

Trouble For Mourinho As Zidane Eyes Manchester United JobThe France legend, who won three consecutive Champions League trophies at Real Madrid, as well as La Liga in 2017 and two Club World Cups but left on a high this summer, was being lined up as sporting director at Juventus but wants to stay in management and has set his sights on the Premier League and, in particular, Manchester United.

This is coming on the back of complaints from pundits and fans about the negative football being played by the Jose Mourinho led united.

The Frenchman, who stepped down from his position as Real Madrid manager at the end of May – barely five days after his Champions League triumph with Los Blancos against Liverpool in a memorable Kiev final – is, according to French outlet L’Equipe, keen on taking over at Old Trafford.

It would be an almost cruel twist if Zidane was eventually named to replace Mourinho at the United helm considering it was the Portuguese who first encouraged he be brought into the Real Madrid setup in 2010.

Doctors Set Date To Embark On Indefinite Strike In Abuja

Doctors Set Date To Embark On Indefinite Strike In Abuja

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Abuja chapter has disclosed that it will begin an indefinite strike on August 25.

The union made this known in a statement jointly signed by its president, Michael Olarewaju and secretary, Roland Aigbovo, on Wednesday in Abuja.

The union also blame the impending strike on the failure of the FCT Administration to repay “obnoxious” tax deduction from July salaries of staff, among other demands.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the association had earlier condemned the tax deduction of N78, 000 from each of its members’ July salaries.

It said the current deduction was against the initial N36, 000 deductions imposed on the doctors.

The union noted that it had on Aug. 1, 2018 issued a-21day ultimatum effective from Aug. 3 to FCT administration, calling on the Minister, Muhammad Bello, to address the issue.

They listed other demands to include payment of first 28 days allowance of members effective from 2011, as calculated without further delay, appropriate placement and payment of arrears to members who were successful in the 2016 promotion exercise.

“We totally reject the obnoxious and double taxation imposed on our members by FCTA management, which negates all scientific reasoning and Law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the union said.

“The appropriate tax should be done using the Joint Tax Board/Personal Income Tax Act template (PITA) and all excess deduction paid back.

“We will be compelled to proceed on an indefinite strike for failure of the FCT administration to meet our demands on or before the expiration of the ultimatum which is Aug. 24,’’ they said.

Mr Olarewaju said, “Based on our investigations at the Health and Human Resources Service Secretariat, Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) and FCT Inland Revenue Services (FCTIRS).

“It was revealed that the obnoxious tax didn’t follow the PITA template or other conventional means of taxation.

“We have earlier written the FCT Minister on the myriad of problems faced daily by our members regarding conditions of work and services delivery in FCTA.

“This is largely due to poor remuneration in comparison with our contemporaries in other health institutions and Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) both in the territory and other parts of the federation.

“It is pertinent to say that a motivated workforce always give rise to an on improved work done and with regard to job satisfaction our members are in pathetic state,’’ he decried.

Nigerian Convicted For Phishing US Universities Of $6M To Know His Fate On Oct 22

A jury in Atlanta has convicted a Nigerian man on federal charges related to hacking universities in the United States.

According to a press release issued on Monday, August, 13, the prosecutors told the court that the 34-year-old Olayinka Olaniyi and his accomplice, 29-year-old Damilola Solomon Ibiwoye ran several phishing scams targeting employees at US colleges and universities, including Georgia Tech and the University of Virginia.

US’ Ledger Enquirer quoted the prosecutors as saying that they obtained employee logins and passwords and used them to steal payroll deposits and to file fraudulent tax returns.

All in all, their attempted theft totaled over $6 million.

It was gathered that Olaniyi was convicted last week of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, computer fraud and aggravated identity theft. He is to be sentenced October 22.

Ibiwoye, who’s also from Nigeria, pleaded guilty to similar charges. He was sentenced to serve three years and three months in prison.

Sharing information on their arrest and subsequent convictions, a release by the Department of Justice, US. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Georgia, dated Monday, August 13, 2018, quoted US Attorney Byung J. ‘BJay’ Pak, as saying:

“These defendants used trickery to lure and exploit their unsuspecting victims, but they will now face the consequences of their scheme in federal prison.”

According to Pak, the duo were behind “phishing scams” that targeted institutions in the US, including the Georgia Institute of Technology (“Georgia Tech”) and the University of Virginia.

The statement read: “A ‘phishing scam’ is the act of sending fraudulent emails that appear to come from legitimate enterprises for the purpose of tricking the recipients into providing personal information, including usernames and passwords.

“Olaniyi and Ibiwoye directed phishing emails to college and university employees.  Once they had possession of employee logins and passwords, they were able to steal payroll deposits by changing the bank account into which the payroll was deposited.  Also, while logged into the university system through the stolen logins and passwords, these defendants were able to gain access to employee W2 forms, which they used to file fraudulent tax returns.  The attempted theft was over $6 million.

“The stolen funds were routed into U.S. bank accounts, and the evidence showed that access to these bank accounts was acquired through the use of romance scams, where fraudsters pose on dating sites and apps as potential partners to gain the trust of their victim.  At some point, the fraudster will make a request to deposit money into their victim’s account and claim to need all of the account information, including their account number, routing number, passwords, and answers to security questions.  In this case, all of that information was then used to funnel the proceeds of theft through those accounts and out of the country.”

Jurgen Klopp Comes Up With New Excuse For Losing Champions League Final Vs Real Madrid

Featured Image

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has given a new reason as to why Liverpool failed to beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final

Liverpool lost the final to Real Madrid, 3-1 in Kiev, Star Player Mohamed Salah getting injured early in the game after a coming together with Madrid defender Sergio Ramos

“We had a fantastic season last year, although the result of the Champions League final was not what we were hoping for,” Klopp told the French magazine. “Nobody was waiting for us there, even though, as the season progressed, we thought that the final was a possible goal.

“Everyone knows that Mo Salah’s injury has changed things. But not only that. We are not going to rewrite the story, but we played the last two months of last season with twelve valid players.

“We had to fight with Chelsea until the end.”

ICYMI: Tottenham Confirm Move To New Stadium Has Been Delayed

Featured Image

Tottenham have confirmed that their planned stadium move has been delayed by at least another month.

Tottenham were due to host Liverpool in the £1bn stadium’s first fixture on September 15, having been allowed to play their first home match of the season, against Fulham next Saturday, at Wembley Stadium.

A delay in construction means that they will now play at least three matches at Wembley, however, with the games against Liverpool and Cardiff City also being switched, as well as the NFL clash between Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders.

Spurs announced the news in a statement on their official website on Monday evening following press speculation that they may not move into the ‘Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’ until early 2019.

“Following the release of the Premier League fixtures for the 2018-19 season, we announced that, barring any significant issues with the final stages of stadium completion, our match against Liverpool on 15 September would be the first match in our new stadium,” the statement read. “Recent testing and commissioning has now shown issues with the critical safety systems.

“Urgent follow-up meetings with Mace and the trade contractors are now taking place. We are reviewing the situation and planned timetable to rectify and re-test, after which we shall be in a better position to outline a revised timetable. The delays created by these difficulties mean that we can no longer hold the necessary Test Events on August 27 and September 1.

“These will need to be rescheduled to take place ahead of any first official match at the new stadium in order to achieve the safety licence. In the meantime, therefore, our upcoming Premier League matches against Liverpool (September 15) and Cardiff City (October 6) will be switched to Wembley, as will the NFL match scheduled for 14 October.”

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said: “We know this will be disappointing for all our season tickets holders, premium members and our fans worldwide. We appreciate the support our partner the NFL has shown since the extent of this issue became evident today.

“At the start of the project we asked for your support during what we knew would be a complex and challenging build and now we ask for your continued patience and forbearance.”
