The World Is Uniting Against Buhari’s Second Term Bid, By SKC Ogbonnia

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

The Independent newspaper reported yesterday, August 14, 2018, that many influential nations are joining to mount pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari to discard his second term ambition. The report reads in part, “There is serious pressure on him from the international community, especially the United States, European Union, the United Kingdom (UK), and even Saudi Arabia.”

This piece was written by SKC Ogbonnia. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

However, Buhari’s camp did not waste time to counter this, bewailing, suggesting that the report is not credible. The presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, added that, “If there are quarters in which President Buhari is held in very high esteem, and the work he is doing for Nigeria highly lauded, it is in the countries mentioned. Some of them are equally bastions of democracy, and will not interfere in the democratic affairs of a sovereign country.”

The statement from the presidency is self-serving and too far from the truth. The simple truth is that neither the world nor democracy, in and of itself, promotes bad governance — whether in democratic, pseudo democratic or autocratic governments. So, the international community does indeed interfere in “the democratic affairs of a sovereign country”, where necessary. As a leading figure in selling Buhari’s candidacy to the international community in 2014 through 2015, I know firsthand the role of such democratic nations during the campaign and in the events leading to President Goodluck Jonathan’s historic concession.

Further, my campaign has been crisscrossing the globe in the past weeks, consulting with fellow Nigerians, as well as influential leaders within our major allies, including Great Britain, the United States, France, Germany, Russia, China, Canada, etc. I can state unequivocally that the emerging consensus among these nations is that President Buhari’s second term ambition lacks in cogency. They point to Buhari’s failing health, lack of clear vision, lack of intellectual capacity, an apparent pattern of torpor, nepotism, wanton killings, disregard for the rule of law, and a growing sense of disunity and uncertainty in the land, among many failings.

President Muhammadu Buhari should consider our great party and country before self. The worst omen that can meet Nigeria at this stage of national development is any opening that allows the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to wangle itself back to power. Buhari’s candidacy is squarely that opening, period. Therefore, it is incumbent upon more patriots, including Buhari’s henchmen, to join to appeal to the president to permanently suspend his campaign, emulate Mandela, and retire with dignity. The future of the ruling APC and Nigeria belongs to a younger generation of leaders who possess the vim and the competencies to cope with the challenges of the 21st century. True.

Baba Kuboye and Femi Kuti Collaboration for #OneDayEGoBetter Confirmed

Featured Image

Over the weekend, rumors of a Baba Kuboye and Femi Kuti collabo sparked after a photo of the two kicking it in the studio in Texas surfaced. Whether or not a new Baba Kuboye album is on its way is still in the air, but the Afrobeat luminary confirmed Kuboye’s hero is indeed working on new music with him.

“Right from days, keeping family tradition is not just on social issues but in music. The same way Fela Kuti used to jam at Jazz 38 (Baba’s parents’ franchise club from the 80’s) is the same way I am jamming with Baba Kuboye now.”, said Femi Kuti.

Baba Kuboye later added: “Well, I did some work with him for some stuff that would be released soon. I’m not really sure of the details of his personal project in that sense, but we worked on some music together. I’ve been a fan of his music since he started working with his Dad. We’ve never done any musical work together. So that was a joy to finally work together musically.”

We’re here for the hit.

Despite clues pointing to a possible collaboration, there’s no official proof that Femi Kuti’s 2018 Tour will end 16 of November as stated on Song Kick dot Com. On the other hand, Baba have been spotted in Nigeria, which probably means he’s in town for business.

But in a chat with This Day, the 24-year-old professional photographer and model said that he was working on many things, stressing that this was not the time for any relationship.

When asked “are you in a relationship?”

He said: “Everybody is curious about that. For now, I am busy working because there is a whole lot of work to do. This is not even the time to be in any relationship. I need to be settled with this life first, so when I have all my onions together, I will start looking around for a relationship.”

“One of my childhood dreams was to get married at the age of 24. But now I am 24, and there is still a lot to be achieved before I settle down. For now I just keep working so that I can get to my destination faster. Once I reach a certain level, I can then make a decision on a life partner.”

Bear in mind that in May, Bakre had said he does not see a relationship with Alex working at the moment.

Speaking with BBN host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu on Channels ‘Rubbing Minds,’ Tobi said there is a lot of pressure from fans for them to start a relationship but it is not the goal for him at the moment.

2019: Pastor Okotie Speaks On His Plans For Nigeria, Defection By Politicians

2019: Pastor Okotie Speaks On His Plans For Nigeria, Defection By Politicians

The founder of the Household of God Church, Pastor Chris Okotie, who recently renewed his ambition to run for the President of Nigeria, has revealed how he hopes to govern the nation in view of the divergent philosophies of the country’s two most political gladiators (APC and PDP).

Pastor Okotie Declares To Contest Against Buhari

During an interview with Vanguard newspaper, the prominent cleric also said the gale of defection blowing across the country portends good tidings for the nation.

Okotie As God’s Political Missionary

Asked how do you hope to govern Nigeria in view of the divergent philosophies of the APC and PDP on whose joint platform you want to run for the Presidency?

He said: “Politics is essentially the negotiation of instrumentality for a place and for a time. Every political agenda is predicated on an ideological philosophy that finds expression in its manifesto. The manifesto is an aggregation of philosophical abstractions that are seeking practical materialisation. I believe that the two dominant parties understand the seriousness of what confronts Nigeria and we would resort to a certain political pragmatism that would enable Nigeria overcome these existential adversaries as I mentioned in my letter.”

“There are many patriots within these parties who understand that we have an aboriginal connectivity as a nation or as a people that cannot be vitiated by any political philosophy or alliance. We have come to that point in our political evolution where we must be willing to be messianic, that is, sacrificial in our disposition towards Nigeria. Even if it is just based on the terms of examining the Constitution and re-ordering it, and all of the ramifications that derive therefrom. I am sure that we can find a certain level of philosophical syncretism that will enable us take Nigeria to the next level.”

Speaking on the current defections, he said:

“The present political scenario in Nigeria is not unusual and is characteristic of a free democracy like ours which empowers you to establish a position and to pursue it, looking for a platform on which you can articulate and crystallize that political posture.

“This phenomenon, in my view, represents birth pangs and it portends good things; that there is light at the end of the tunnel and the renaissance of our great nation.

“These things will play out in their natural sequence and eventually, we will come to a place where we will all recognise the need for a certain mutuality that must be available to each political party and all political actors involved; for the sake of the unity, holistic existence of our nation and posterity.”

US Earmarks $12.5million For Food Security In Nigeria

The Feed the Future, a U.S. government global hunger and food security initiative, has earmarked 12.5 million dollars for food security in Nigeria.

Dr George Mavrotas, Head of IFPRI Nigeria office, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

Mavrotas, who is also the Chief of the Project, The Feed the Future Nigeria Agricultural Policy Project, said that the fund which has been released since 2016 would cover various agricultural and food security programmes in Nigeria for the next five years.

Nigeria Agricultural Policy Project is designed to address the need for policy research and capacity building and to ensure that Nigeria institutions are equipped to respond effectively to increase capacity, knowledge and information needs of the policy makers.

He explained that the initiative was a joint effort between the Michigan State University (MSU), International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and Nigeria Strategy Support Programme (NSSP) funded by USAID-Nigeria.

Mavrotas said that the initiative has three main objectives, which includes strengthening of the National capacity for greater evidence based policy process in agriculture.

Others are to promote and foster informed policy dialogue among stakeholders and support government efforts to improve their capacities to plan and implement effective research and policy analyses.

He noted that the project would undertake three components that would enhance Nigeria’s policy capacity; fill the knowledge gaps in the policy process and improve policy dialogue process to achieve its objectives.

The Chief of the Project said that the project is taking a robust approach to enhance skills, training and institutional capacities for meeting the demands for policy analysis by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), IFPRI and MSU.

He added that the components would also include policy driven collaborative research analysis to strengthen local capacities and dialogue by undertaking policy research and analysis.

Mavrotas, however, added that the component would ensure that the project address policy impact through increased and targeted policy communications.

He said the move has become imperative because Nigeria agriculture policymaking has evolved and the capacity to make and implement policy has improved overtime.

Mavrotas, however, noted that the shortfalls in human and institutional capacity remain and this has limited the potential to support the efforts of the FMARD in policies and programme implementations.

#DapchiGirls: Nigeria Rejects UN’s Claim Of Ransom Payment To Boko Haram Terrorists

The federal government of Nigeria has reacted in denial to a report that it paid ransom to a Boko Haram splinter group Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) to secure the release of the Dapchi schoolgirls.

The rebuttal is coming hours after a United Nations report presented to the UN Security Council on Thursday revealed Nigeria paid ransom to free scores of female students kidnapped in Dapchi, Yobe State.

UN Reveals How Boko Haram Is Funded

The girls were kidnapped from their school on February 18. One of the girls, Leah Sharibu, is yet to be released for refusing to convert to Islam, other freed girls said.

The Nigerian government said on March 21 that negotiations through a back-channel led to the release of the girls and a boy. But a recent report published by the United Nations said the government lied.

“The girls were released around 3:00 am through back-channel efforts and with the help of some friends of the country,” said Nigeria’s Information minister Lai Mohammed in March.

While the minister disclosed that before the girls were freed the insurgents only demanded for a temporary ceasefire, the United Nations, however, said in a recent report submitted to the Security Council Committee that the Nigerian government paid “large ransom” to ISWAP.

“In Nigeria, 111 schoolgirls from the town of Dapchi were kidnapped on 18 February 2018 and released by ISWAP on 21 March 2018 in exchange for a large ransom payment,” the UN said in the report.

The report said such ransom and the predominance of cash economy was providing oxygen for the insurgency around the Lake Chad region.

In its reaction to the report, the Nigerian government through Mr Mohammed said it stands by its statement that no ransom was paid.

It described the UN report as a “mere conjecture.”

”It is not enough to say that Nigeria paid a ransom, little or huge. There must be a conclusive evidence to support such claim. Without that, the claim remains what it is: a mere conjecture,” the minister was quoted as saying in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Segun Adeyemi.

Nigeria’s foreign exchange inflow hits $91bn in 2017 – CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has revealed that the aggregate foreign exchange inflow into the country stood at $91 billion in 2017.

The bank disclosed in its 2017 annual report released on Thursday that the figure was an increase of 45 per cent from $62.75 billion in 2016.

The bank also said the figure surpassed the total outflow by $57.32 billion in the period.

According to the bank, inflow through the CBN was $42.17 billion, while inflow through autonomous sources amounted to $48.33 billion.

In percentage terms, inflow through the CBN accounted for 46.3 per cent, while autonomous sources took 53.7 per cent.

Also, aggregate foreign exchange outflow, from the economy, increased by 31.8 per cent to $33.68 billion, higher than the $25.55 billion in 2016.

The report said the outflow through the CBN accounted for 90.7 per cent, about $30.55 billion. It was $23.16 billion in 2016.

Outflow via autonomous sources was calculated at $3.13 billion

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said increase was attributed to the increased intervention by the CBN in the inter-bank and Bureau De Change (BDC) segments of the foreign exchange market.
