Nigerian Army Hands Over 23 Minors ‘Linked With Boko Haram’ To UNICEF

Nigerian Army on Saturday handed over 23 minors rescued from Boko Haram to United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) for rehabilitation.

Maj.-Gen. Abbah Dikko, Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, who disclosed this at the command headquarters in Maiduguri, said the exercise was in conformity with international best practise.

Dikko said, “In compliance with global best practise, we handed over these children associated with armed group to UNICEF,” Dikko said.

He explained that the gesture was in line with the commitment of the army to promote civil military relationship toward achieving lasting peace in the Northeast.

In his remark, Mr Geoffrey Ijumba, UNICEF Chief of Field Office, Borno State, who received the minors, welcomed the release of the 23 boys and girls aged between 12 and 17 years from the military custody.

He said UNICEF was working with the military and Borno government through the Ministry of Women Affairs to provide medical attention, psychological and social supports to victims displaced by the Boko Haram conflicts.

He said, “For these children, the long journey towards reuniting with their families, with their communities and fulfilling their dreams starts immediately.

Pernille Ironside, UNICEF’s Nigeria Acting Representative, stressed that the UN would continue to work with the military and other authorities to support the reintegration of all children released by the military.

Ironside stressed the need to support these children to fulfill their hopes and aspirations, saying the organisation will not relent until there are no more children in administrative custody.

Kano govt empowers 8, 800 youths with N275miillion

The Kano State Government has spent the sum of N275 million on youths empowerment, the state Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, has said.

Ganduje stated this in Kano on Saturday during the flag-off of its newly introduced cash transfer disbursement to 8,  800 youths at the Government House, Kano.

According to him, the gesture was to enable the beneficiaries to start their own businesses in order to become self-reliant.

“The programme is driven by the need to encourage our youths to be self-employed and to establish their own businesses.

“A total of 8,800 youths drawn from across the 44 local governments of the state will benefit from the empowerment and each of them will receive N20,000.

“Another set of 6, 600 comprising women only will also benefit from the programme and each of them will get N15,000,” Ganduje said.

The governor said that the empowerment programme introduced by the state government had reduced youth restiveness, criminal activities and other anti-social behaviours.

He, therefore, urged the youth in the state to vote President Muhammadu Buhari during the forthcoming elections in 2019.

Earlier, the state commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Murtala Sule -Garo, said the programme was designed to empower unemployed youths in the state.

Sule-Garo said that the measure will go a long way in complementing the efforts of the Federal Government toward addressing unemployment especially among youths in the country.

He also urged the beneficiaries to utilise the money for the purpose for which it was given to them.

INEC Boss Speaks On Postponement Of 2019 Elections

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmoud Yakubu, has declared that the date for the conduct of the 2019 general elections remains sacrosanct and wont be postponed, notwithstanding the delay in the passage of the N189.2 billion budget- proposal for the conduct of the polls before the National Assembly.

INEC Wants N6billion To Feed Policemen During 2019 Elections

Yakubu gave the assurance while fielding questions on the implications of the development after a meeting with the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, in the Presidential villa, Abuja, on Friday.

According to the INEC chair, the date for the elections had already been set.

Saraki ‘Considers’ Unseating Buhari In 2019

He added that the issue of postponement was, therefore, not being contemplated by the Commission to alter programme.

His words: “I have said this over and over again, there are no conditions under which elections should be postponed, under section 26 of the Electoral Act. The date is formed and fixed, February 16, 2019.

“We issued the timetable way in advance. For the very first time in the history of our nation, citizens of Nigeria know when elections will take place one year in advance. It has never happened before.”

The election umpire also noted that for the first time in the history of the country, Nigerians now know the budget of the electoral commission.

“That budget has never been defended before the National Assembly, and citizens know line by line how much the commission proposed, what the money is going to be spent on, I think I am very happy with this process,” he added.

The INEC boss also clarified that the commission has no budgetary arrangements to accommodate international observers during the 2019 elections in the country.

“There is no such thing. There is no line in the budget for international observers. What we have provided for are the kits, you know the jackets, caps, publication, that we give to international observers, the stickers that are fixed on their cars to be identified on Election Day.

“This is the standard practice. Each country that organises elections provides these facilities for those who monitor elections.“But their accommodation, transportation will be borne by various election monitoring groups and not by the Nigerian government,” he said.

Yinka Ayefele Cries Out As Oyo Govt Prepares To Demolish His N800m Music House

Yinka Ayefele Cries Out As Oyo Govt Prepares To Demolish His N800m Music House

Popular Juju musician and Chairman/CEO of Fresh FM, a private radio station in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Mr. Yinka Ayefele has expressed his displeasure at the notice issued by the Oyo State government to demolish part of his Music House which houses the radio station worth close to N800m.

“Having failed to comply with the earlier stop work/quit/ contravention notice (s) served on your development or as your structure is found to be structurally defective/poses danger or constitutes a nuisance to the occupier or the general public, you are hereby ordered to vacate the site and remove the structure thereon within three days, failure of which the government shall effect the removal and commence legal action against you in accordance with Section 43 of the law,” reads the notice addressed to Ayefele.

However, while speaking with The Punch via his publicist, David Ajiboye; Ayefele said that the demolition of the edifice which houses his radio station and music studio is politically motivated.

“We don’t see it as a threat; instead we see it as a challenge because the planned demolition of the music house is politically motivated. When the governor visited the studio in 2016, he said people told him to demolish the building because Ayefele was not in his camp. The building was approved in June 2008 as a business premise; that is over 10 years ago,” he said.

Quoting the State Governor Ajimobi when he visited the studio in October 2016, Ajiboye said:

“I want to use this opportunity to thank God for the ability to be here because when we contested the first time and won, a lot of people came to meet me to destroy the music house because Ayefele is not for us and he is always using songs to insult us. But I didn’t see any reason why I should demolish it because I felt if Ayefele is not for us now, he may be for us later. I am happy today that Ayefele is beside me now and I pray that the business will keep flourishing and this is the best studio I have seen in Oyo State.”

Ajiboye further said that the organisation passed all required tests to erect the building on its current site and wondered why the government wants to demolish the structure.

“We have the deed of assignment which is the equivalent of a Certificate of Occupancy. We have a copy of the approved building plan dated June 6, 2008. In October 2012, the governor said he was going to demolish the building to pave way for the dualisation of the four lanes. The engineers came and they demolished a part of the fence, not the building.

“Until six weeks ago, we got letters from the government agencies in Oyo State telling us that they want to evaluate the building. We asked them to come; they came on June 26, 2018. They titled the letter, ‘Re: Emergency request of proof of planning from Bureau of Physical Planning’.” They claimed we didn’t get approval for the radio tower permission00 the mast that was erected in the building.

“Their final recommendation was that since the developer had deviated from the approved building plan, it automatically meant that the building is not covered with an approval any longer. During the week, the commissioner issued a press release claiming that they got series of petitions from people that stated that in the last nine months, accidents have occurred on this road and it is as a result of the presence of the music house; but that is a lie.”

“We are not losing sleep over this incident. It is beyond Ayefele now and we are not prepared to plead with them. If they want to come and demolish the building, they should come but we are not occupying the place illegally. What was the government looking at since for over 10 years? This government has been in power for seven years.

“We are expecting them; they said they will come in the midnight. The truth of the matter is that they think we will come to them to worship them but we have not offended them. If they knew the building was not properly situated, why have they been collecting premises permit from us monthly? Why have they been taking tenement rate from us monthly? They brought a letter for us to pay for entertainment, canteen fee. The governor has visited and he praised Fresh FM. Most of the governorship aspirants in APC have visited us and we featured them on the air for free.”

Ajiboye lamented that if the government destroyed the building, it would mean that it had no respect for the rule of law.

“If they demolish the Music House, it means they don’t have respect for the rule of law. The commissioner for information had told us to change some of our analysts because they are too harsh on the government but that is against the ethics of our profession in this radio station. The commissioner for information and culture said this about two months ago before all these started; so we were not shocked when the commissioner started making this move against us. We were ready for the attack but we didn’t know the angle they would hit us from,” he said

Blackface Drags Wizkid And Banky W To Court Over Alleged Copyright Infringement

Veteran Nigerian music artiste, Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo, better known by his stage name, Blackface Naija, is dragging popular Nigerian singers, Wizkid and Banky W, to court over what he calls copyright infringement.

The singer, who made the announcement via his Instagram handle, seems to be filing a case of copyright theft against the duo for allegedly stealing his song.

While stating in the suit that Wizkid’s “Slow Whine” off his debut ‘Superstar’ album, which was released on June 2011, is a reproduction of his song “Like the Way,” Blackface is demanding over a N100m in the case.

He also shared a clip of the part of both songs, showing where he’s claiming was copied, and wrote:Blackface Drags Wizkid And Banky W To Court

“I have remained quiet while my name has been dragged in the mud the past few years. Some of Nigeria’s biggest artists have infringed on my copyrights but I always restricted myself to speaking out against this in the media. Maybe because I always felt that music is an art and not really a business where you bring in lawyers and all that. That’s why I couldn’t believe when I was sued for N50m by the same people who stole my intellectual property.”

“I have nothing personal against Wizkid & Banky, in fact I can say I groove to both their music, but the fact is that they stole my song in 2011 and there’s clear evidence to prove it. We’ll allow the Court to decide.”

Two new managers will go head to head on Saturday in their first ever Premier League London derby – Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea host Unai Emery’s Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea got off to the perfect start with a 3-0 win at Huddersfield, while Arsenal’s start to the season was a stark contrast as they went down 2-0 at the Emirates against champions Manchester City.

Team news

Chelsea’s midfielder Cesc Fabregas is out of the clash with his former club which could in turn present an opportunity for new signing Mateo Kovacic, on loan from Real Madrid, to make his debut.

Eden Hazard could make his first start since the World Cup.

Arsenal will be without Ainsley Maitland-Niles. He suffered a small fracture to his leg in last weekend’s defeat to Manchester City and faces up to two months out.
