Arsene Wenger Undecided On His Managerial Future

Arsene Wenger has admitted that he has yet to come to a decision regarding his future as a manager

The former Arsenal manager ended his 22-year managerial spell with the Gunners at the end of last season.

Wenger was initially expected to make a decision after the World Cup but, in an interview with Corse Matin, the 68-year-old stated that he plans to take a little longer to make up his mind.

“I decided not to decide,” Wenger told the Corsican publication while on holiday on the French island. “I was intoxicated for such a long time that I promised myself not to make any decisions before September.

“When you have been as busy as I have been, you always fear a little emptiness. But I quickly organised myself in this new stage of my life, I do a lot of sport, here I eat with my friends. I talk a lot too, I can sit for hours contemplating the horizon, I read every day.”

Manchester City Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo Ruptures Achilles Tendon, Says ‘Life Will Go On’

Featured Image
Claudio Bravo picked up the injury in Monday’s training session and underwent scans in the afternoon.

Bravo was reported by numerous media sources to have suffered the injury on Monday, with the player himself posting a tweet which alluded to coming back from adversity.

“No matter what happens, or how bad it looks today, life will go on, and tomorrow will certainly be better,” wrote the 35-year-old.

On Monday night, the Premier League champions revealed that scans on Bravo “confirmed a rupture in the tendon of his left foot”.

City also announced that the Chilean “will fly out to Barcelona for further tests on Thursday where the extent of the injury will be examined”.

Bravo’s injury leaves City reliant on 20-year-old Daniel Grimshaw to act as deputy to first-choice Ederson.

While Grimshaw is yet to make a single senior appearance, he signed a three-year contract at the club in June.

Arsene Wenger Confirms Thierry Henry Wants To Manage Bordeaux

Featured Image

Arsene Wenger says Thierry Henry wants to take charge of Bordeaux.

Bordeaux are on the hunt for a new manager after Gus Poyet was sacked for criticising the club’s board over the sale of Gaetan Laborde to Montpelier without his knowledge.

Poyet lost his job at the Nouveau Stade after labelling Bordeaux’s board a ‘disgrace’ following the side’s Europa League victory over Mariupol. ‘What happened with Gaëtan Laborde is a disgrace,’ the Uruguayan said.

‘I asked the club not to sell him until we bring in another player. They didn’t listen to me, they let Laborde leave. ‘We arrived at the hotel today at 11.45am, Laborde was not there. We called him, he was at Montpelier. Nobody said anything to us. I will discuss with my agent and then make a decision.’

Thierry Henry is Bordeaux’s number one target to succeed Poyet and it’s understood the iconic Frenchman has been approached over the vacant position.

“Yes, he wants to do it,” Wenger told Corse Matin. “He is intelligent and he has the qualities.

“The existential question that we always ask ourselves is whether we are ready to sacrifice our life for the coaching profession.”

Solomon Dalung Gloats As Nigeria Narrowly Escapes FIFA Ban

World football governing body (FIFA) has confirmed that Nigeria will not be suspended following Federal Government’s directive that Amaju Pinnick-led executive committee remains the legitimate board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Suspension! FIFA Issues Final Ultimatums To Nigeria

In a statement released on it’s website, FIFA confirmed that they will not go ahead with the ban, but that they “will continue to closely monitor the situation”.

The statement read: “Following the decision of the Bureau of the FIFA Council of 13 August 2018 concerning the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), FIFA received confirmations that the legitimate leadership of the NFF under President Amaju Melvin Pinnick and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi has been given back effective control of the NFF and its offices.

“In view of these circumstances, FIFA deems that the conditions set by the decision of the Bureau of the FIFA Council have now been met and consequently the suspension of the NFF will not take effect.

“FIFA will continue to closely monitor the situation in order to ensure that FIFA’s rules and regulations are fully adhered to.”

Earlier in the week, FIFA issued Nigeria with an ultimatum, stating that they have until today to restore and recognise Amaju Pinnick as the legitimate president of the NFF, or face a ban.

But earlier today, Laolu Akande, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, Office of the Vice President, tweeted FG’s position on the leadership tussle at the Glass House, insisting that the Amaju Pinnick-led executive committee remains the authentic board of the NFF.

Nigeria was to be handed a lengthy ban this afternoon, a development that would have thrown Super Eagles qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations into jeopardy.

Meanwhile, before now, Nigeria’s Sports Minister Solomon Dalung had bragged that the African most populous nation will not be scared by the world football governing body FIFA.

The Minister told KweséESPN on Friday in Kampala that since Nigeria is a sovereign state, it will not bow to pressures from FIFA.

“FIFA will not scare us. We are a big country and FIFA must learn to listen to a country that is investing a lot of money in football development,” Dalung said at the Seninde Foundation Women’s Football tournament hosted at the Philip Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, where he was a guest.

“There is a misconception of the entire situation. FIFA is an international organisation. Nigeria is a country and a defined sovereign state which is affiliated to FIFA. We have a crisis in the football leadership and the crisis went to the courts and the supreme courts decided. So, what is FIFA talking about? And yet they also don’t want to meet us.” said Dalung.

Dalung is adamant that FIFA are incorrect and he believes that FIFA should treat governing bodies in Africa with more respect.

“FIFA cannot be right. They have not even appreciated what is on the ground. Football is funded in Africa by governments which build the infrastructure and pump in money. FIFA must therefore learn to treat the government partners with respect,” added Dalung in his interview with KweséESPN.

“We wrote them a letter seeking [a platform to] discuss about the crisis in Nigerian football. But, we received a letter on Thursday saying that they are not willing to meet with the Nigerian delegation. That is the best we have done to engage with them and discuss the crisis.

“They have decided to take sides and stand by what they think,” added the Sports Minister.

Ekiti Monarch Stabbed To Death

Odo-Oro-Ekiti, a community in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State, was on Monday thrown into mourning as its traditional ruler, Oba Gbadebo Ogunsakin, was stabbed to death.

Some residents, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria, said the traditional ruler was stabbed with a knife by a man suspected to be insane after a meeting of the traditional council.

A resident, Mr Henry Olu, said the assailant was from the same royal family as the slain traditional ruler.

Olu said the assailant was earlier seen before the council meeting sitting on the throne and was chased away.

The monarch was stabbed by the assailant while he was attempting to enter his vehicle after the council meeting.

“All we heard was a cry for help from the traditional ruler’s driver shortly after the council meeting.

“On getting there, we saw our traditional ruler in a pool of his blood with a knife in the chest.

“We tried rushing him to the hospital, but Oba Ogunsakin gave up the ghost,” another resident, who does not want his name mentioned, said.

NAN reports that some irate youths in the community took to the streets in search of the assailant who was said to have fled into the bush after the incident.

The youths mounted roadblocks on major junctions leading into the community while the search lasted.

NAN also reports that there was panic in the community, with its market deserted as the news of the incident filtered.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with NAN.

“It is true the incident actually happened and policemen have moved in.

“The person alleged is of unsound mind and he actually escaped into the bush after committing the crime.

“Our men are combing the bush to fish out the suspect.

“All I can say for now is that the suspect is within reach and will be put in custody,” he said.

NAN reports that the late Ogunsakin ascended the throne in 1986.

Jerome Boateng’s Chances Of Joining Paris Saint-Germain Remains 50/50 – Uli Hoeness

Featured Image

Jerome Boateng is rated “50/50” over whether he could move to PSG this summer, Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has said.

He told a reporter: “Only Paris is an option, if they pay accordingly, then we will deal with it. If they do not, he will stay with us and then everything is okay. I would say the odds are 50/50.”

When a player wants to leave and we have alternatives, then we busy ourselves with that. A decision will be reached in the next few weeks.”

Boateng, who won the World Cup win Germany four years ago, has missed 33 games due to injuries over the past two seasons, reportedly leading some clubs to wary about spending big money to sign a player with that injury history.

Manchester United tried to sign the Germany defender before the English transfer window closed on August 9.

Roma sporting director Monchi has confirmed that Maxime Gonalons is set to leave the club. Paul Scholes Slams Paul Pogba’s Comments After Manchester United’s Loss To Brighton

Featured Image

Paul Scholes has slammed the comments made by Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba following the team’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of Brighton on Sunday.

Paul Pogba admitted after the surprise defeat that he and his teammates went into the match with the wrong attitude, and were subsequently beaten in their opening away game of the new season.

Scholes was left amazed by the Frenchman’s statement , insisting that only the player is to blame if his attitude was part of the reason for his side’s lacklustre performance.

Paul Pogba Questions His Attitude After Manchester United’s Loss To Brighton

“I hope that is lost in translation. There is no defence for that comment, there is no defence for it,” Scholes is quoted as saying by The Mirror.

“You say it to yourself, don’t you? You’re constantly saying to yourself: ‘Attitude right, make sure it’s right’. You don’t need other people to tell you. You don’t need a manager to tell you that or your teammates.”

Scholes also criticised the French international’s “inconsistent” displays for the club.

Newcastle Forward Kenedy Avoids Retrospective Punishment Over Kick Out

Featured Image

Newcastle midfielder Kenedy has avoided retrospective action for his off-the-ball challenge on Cardiff City’s Victor Camarasa on Saturday.

Kenedy appeared to kick out at Camarasa during the goalless draw, but referee Craig Pawson did not produce a card.

However, the referee did award Cardiff a free kick, and as such the incident will not be referred to a disciplinary panel as it was dealt with at the time.

Kenedy had been facing a three-match ban for violent conduct, but the Brazilian will not be handed any further punishment.

The Chelsea loanee endured something of a nightmare in south Wales, capping a poor individual display by missing an injury-time penalty from which he could have snatched three points for his team.

He will sit out Sunday’s clash with his parent club under the terms of his loan agreement, but will be free to return to the side, if selected, for the Carabao Cup second round trip to Nottingham Forest two days later..

Tottenham Hotspur Reach Agreement With UEFA Over Champions League Home Game

Featured Image

Tottenham have reached an agreement with UEFA to play their opening Champions League home match at Wembley Stadium.

Tottenham are currently without a permanent home ground due to construction delays at the 62,000-capacity ‘Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’.

The Lillywhites have already moved their Premier League games against Liverpool and Cardiff City, on September 15 and October 6 respectively, from their new stadium to temporary home Wembley.

An agreement is also now in place to stage their first Champions League home match at the national stadium, while talks are ongoing about potentially swapping the venue for their other remaining home group games.

The club said: “We have agreed with UEFA that the first home matchday of this season’s Champions League group stage, scheduled on either matchday one (week commencing 17 September) or matchday two (week commencing 1 October), will be staged at Wembley Stadium.”

They may also be forced to apply for special dispensation to stage next month’s EFL Cup third-round tie at a neutral venue or reverse the fixture to play it away, as Wembley is already being used that week.

In the event that Tottenham Hotspur are drawn at home in Round Three of the Carabao Cup, the Club can apply for special dispensation from the EFL Board to play their fixture away from home as a result of the delays in moving to their new stadium,” the EFL said in a statement.

“If the circumstances dictate a reversal is required, then the EFL Board can also determine a level of compensation to be paid by Tottenham Hotspur to the opposing club.

“The compensation precedent was set in August 2016 when, prior to the draw, Liverpool FC were given permission to play their EFL Cup Round Two tie under the same terms due to redevelopment work taking place on the Club’s Main Stand. On that occasion the draw determined it was not necessary.

An EFL spokesman said: “If required, the rules of the Carabao Cup provide for the Board of the EFL to consider requests to reverse fixtures or for matches to be played at a neutral venue. Any decision to grant dispensation takes into account all relevant circumstances facing a Club at the time the fixture is scheduled to take place.”

Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp Admits He Almost Gave Up On Signing Alisson Becker

Featured Image

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he considered pulling out of a deal to sign Alisson Becker due to the continuous criticism aimed at Loris Karius.

Liverpool spent £67m to sign Allison from Roma this summer two months on from Karius’s howlers in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

The Liverpool manager is adamant that Karius’s display in Kiev was not the catalyst for change, however, and he nearly stuck with his German compatriot as a way of proving a point.

“We simply identified another keeper, who is better, and signed him,” he told Kicker. “I didn’t tell Karius what he wanted to hear, but how it is. The Champions League final had nothing to do with us getting Alisson.

“Even if he had won it and Alisson would have been on the market we would have still signed him. How the people reacted negatively to Karius after the final, tried to isolate him, almost made me not get Alisson and rather stick it out with Karius.

“But we had to be professional. Our job is to have the best players on every position. [Karius] is now 25, at an age, in which keepers keep improving. All the best keepers make mistakes.

“But sometimes timing is important in life. If Loris makes a mistake now it isn’t cool. In eight years nobody will care. We are totally happy with him.”

Here’s Alternative Routes As Lagos Shuts Third Mainland Bridge On Thursday

Here’s Alternative Routes As Lagos Shuts Third Mainland Bridge On Thursday

The Third Mainland Bridge, which is one of the three bridges from Lagos Island to the Mainland, will on Thursday, August 23, be shut for four days, according to the state government.

This was disclosed in a statement signed on Sunday by the Lagos State Deputy Director, Public Affairs Ministry Of Works and Infrastructure, Sina Thorpe.

The bridge, which will be closed a day after 2018 Eid-el-Kabir celebration, is to allow investigative Maintenance Test to be carried out on the Bridge.

The shutdown will start from midnight of August 23 to midnight of August 26, 2018.

The federal government had earlier announced plans to shut the bridge in July but postponed the action after consulting with the state government and other stakeholders.

Reacting to the closure last month, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) also advised Lagos residents to use Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and waterways transportation during the repair of Third Mainland Bridge.

FRSC speaks on alternative routes:

  • “We advise residents in that axis to ensure that they use alternative routes or other means of transportation to avoid traffic jam.
  • “Motorists who have nothing to do at the Lagos Island should stay off at this period and people should make use of waterways and BRT that has designated routes.
  • “People from Ikorodu going to Apapa should endeavour to use waterways transport system, at least for the main time to avoid delay on the road.”
  • “We are identifying various routes to cover during the process of repair like Cater Bridge; Ido to Ijora Olopa to Eko Bridge.
  • “Mostly, the vehicular movement will focus on Ikorodu Road up to Eko Bridge; but I am assuring you that enough personnel will be deployed to curb gridlocks.”

Meanwhile, the Lagos government urged motorists and residents to minimise non-essential travel and movements during the four-day closure.

Frank Blasts Buhari For ‘Vowing To Jail Corrupt Nigerians’ – Alleges Plot to Arrest Obasanjo, Saraki, Atiku

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has raised fresh allegations over alleged plot to arrest former President Olusegun Obasanjo; former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senate President Bukola Saraki, among others.

Buhari Vows To “Jail More Thieves” As He Resumes Office

Frank, who raised the concern in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja, also cautioned President Muhammadu Buhari over a reported statement credited to him that he will jail some Nigerians now that he is back from 10 days leave.

Frank, who considered the statement as a threat to Nigerians, called on the President to look inward within his administration if he is looking for looters to jail.

President Buhari had reportedly told journalists in an interview after his arrival in Abuja last Saturday that he would jail more of the ‘thieves’ that brought economic problems to the country.

But reacting to the President’s comment, Frank said:

“I want to tell you, Mr. President that you are presiding over the worst and most corrupt administration ever. If you realy want to fight corruption why not start from your kitchen cabinet and the leadership of APC?”

“Nigerians and international community are fully aware that all you have been doing is not fighting corruption but your perceived political enemies.”

“Against this backdrop we have reliably gathered that the current administration have penciled down the likes of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Senate President Bukola Saraki among others to be arrested and detained ahead of the general elections in the name of fighting corruption.”

According to Frank, Nigeria is currently in a democratic system of government which requires that a competent court must finds someone guilty of any allegation before he or she can be sent to prison.

While calling on the president to fully imbibe democratic culture, Frank said if the President carefully search his government with an open mind, “he will realise that he is surrounded by thieves.

“It is no longer hidden that president Buhari’s party, the APC is now a heaven for looters. So many known thieves who have stolen Nation’s common wealth at all levels are now congregating in the ruling party. So, if President Buhari will make do with his threat, I will suggest that he stary with his party members.”

Manchester United Unlikely To Mount A Premier League Title Challenge – Gary Neville

Featured Image

Gary Neville has admitted that a Premier League title challenge from Manchester United looks “unlikely” following their 3-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Manchester United fell to a shock loss at the Amex in just their second game of the season, and Neville believes that his former club will once again have to target a top-four finish first and foremost.

“It will get better and Manchester United will get stronger and won’t be easy to play against. I do think they will finish in the top four, but the top four historically has never been the benchmark of what Manchester United are. They have always judged themselves by Premier League titles,” Neville told Sky Sports News.

“At this moment in time, that looks unlikely. Obviously it is still early in the season, but it does look unlikely that Manchester United are anywhere near good enough, as we sit here today. Forget everything else, that back four is not good enough to win a Premier League title. Let’s start and finish with that.

“The goalkeeper is the best in the world, the midfield is strong with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Fred and up front there is Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and a lot of good players. But that back four looks like it will always cause problems and always concede goals. It doesn’t have authority and that is a problem.

“Jose Mourinho knows about Premier League title-winning teams and about winning titles in different countries. The base and foundation of that is a good defence.”

I Never Thought About Leaving Chelsea This Summer – Alvaro Morata

Featured Image

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata insisted that leaving the club was “never a thought” for him this summer

Juventus and AC Milan were both linked with moves to sign the Spaniard after a Premier League campaign that yielded just 11 goals in 30 appearances

After scoring his first goal of the new season in Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Arsenal on Saturday, Alvaro Morata revealed that he is in the process of buying a house near the club’s Cobham training ground and is committed to proving his doubters wrong as he raises his young family in the English capital.

“There was never a thought for me to leave,” Morata said. “For me, it’s easy. I could have gone back to Spain or Italy, all the people believe in me there but I want to change all the things here. I want to, not for all the haters, but for me and for Chelsea.

“I am looking forward to buying a house and I can’t wait for the babies to grow up to put them into school. I am very happy and it’s just the beginning of the new season. Why would I not be happy? I want to change all the thinking from the people who say I’m not.

“It’s the only reason I stay here, otherwise if Chelsea said you are not in our plans, I move.”

Manchester City Film Not Disrespectful To Manchester United Or Jose Mourinho – Pep Guardiola

Featured Image

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola agreed with Jose Mourinho’s comments that “money can’t buy class” but insisted the recent documentary by the was not intended to be disrespectful.

Jose Mourinho accused the Premier League champions of “lacking class” after the eight-part film, “Manchester City: All or Nothing,” appeared to poke fun at the Red Devils

In the build-up to last December’s derby, narrator Ben Kingsley describes the game as a clash of styles between City’s stylish football and Jose Mourinho, who “parks the bus.”

“That is true, you cannot buy class, I agree with Jose, you cannot Jose,” Guardiola told a news conference after City’s 6-1 win over Huddersfield Town on Sunday. “I think we lived an amazing season with cameras. We did it for ourselves. I don’t agree with Jose in terms of [being] disrespectful. That was not our intention — just filming what happened last season.

“As a club we try to grow and to win titles like all the big clubs in the world, we did [the documentary] for ourselves and our fans to see what happens in the locker room. It is Jose’s opinion. Other guys say ‘we like’ and other guys will say ‘no’.”

Guardiola refused to be drawn on further questions about Mourinho’s comments, preferring to focus on City’s performance as they made it two wins out of two in the Premier League. Sergio Aguero claimed a hat trick, the 13th of his City career and ninth in the league, although he could have had even more goals.

“With three goals a game it’s okay, I am not going to demand him to be more clinical,” Guardiola added. “Since he came back from the first second … wow, he came back perfect.

“He feels free now and he suffered the last years with some problems. It is not just scoring goals, it’s the spaces and the chances. He never stops. and when this happens, Sergio is one of the best strikers in the world without a doubt. So chapeau [hat], this period is perfect.”
