Lagos – Ibadan Rail: Transport Minister Says Construction Is 90% Done

Featured Image
The Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has said construction work at the ongoing Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge is about 90% done.

The minister disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria while inspecting the project at Ewekoro-Papalanto axis of the project on Monday.

“We are progressing but there is no way they can fast-track the project during the raining season, but 90 per cent of the construction works has been done”.

“I have told them to work day and night, to ensure the project keeps moving as expected, especially on the bridges and construction of modern station at Ebute-Metta Lagos.

“I also told them that two weeks after the rain must have stopped, they have to complete the remaining 10 per cent to allow them focus on laying of tracks”. He added.

According to Amaechi, there’s a target to finish all the bridges from Iju to Abeokuta by the end of October. He added that laying of tracks would be an easy task after all the earthworks must have been completed.

He also called on the contractor – China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) – to expedite action on the pace of work to ensure timely delivery of the project. Adding that the major challenge facing the project now was where to site the railway stations at various towns and communities along the corridor.

“Where to locate the railway stations has posed a great challenge as many communities find it difficult to release their land for such. We have such challenges in Abeokuta, Agege and other vital areas, where we needed to site the stations.

Lagos

“It won’t be ideal after finishing the construction work and there is no rail station for people to board their train, but we are talking to the communities. Let them know the benefit of the stations to their communities,” he said.

According to him, the challenges of pipelines and cables in Lagos state have been resolved by casing the underground pipes for more protections against the vibrations of the train.

Jim Iyke Arrested For Slapping Dana Air Employee! Here’s All We Know

Report emerged this evening that Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke, was in the afternoon arrested at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, for slapping an employee of Dana Air.

According to the reports, the actor arrived late for his 12:15pm Abuja flight and the airline’s security personnel tried to help him to meet up with the flight by searching him.

Sources gathered that the Nigerian actor refused to be searched as he pushed the man away.

However, the man insisted that he must be searched before boarding and his insistence was said to have angered Iyke, who slapped him for ‘wasting his time.’

Iyke was later arrested by officers from the Airport Police Command.

Confirming the incident, Dana Air’s Media and Communications Manager, Kingsley Ezenwa, said Iyke was, however, released, after he had apologised to the airline employee.

Ezenwa added that the actor eventually missed the flight, which was still on ground when the incident happened.

The Public Relations Officer, Airport Command, Alabi Joseph, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, also confirmed the incident, saying that Iyke was released after he tendered an apology.

Actor denies reports of arrest at airport

Mr Iyke has denied reports going around that he was arrested at the airport.

Speaking with Pulse NG, he said:

“I am surprised at this news. I am presently seating at the Dana Air office about to board my flight. I missed my flight and when I got to the airport, I wanted to try and see if I could make it because the plane hadn’t gone, they even tried speaking to the pilot but it was late. They had to put me on the next flight.

“My sister just called me to ask this same question because she said her old school friend called her and told she held about my arrest. I have been at the airport for two hours. I don’t know why people will come up with stories like this.”

Success With England Did Not Change Harry Maguire – Claude Puel

Leicester City Manager Claude Puel believes defender Harry Maguire commands “respect” for keeping his feet on the ground after his World Cup exploits with England

Harry Maguire scored a last-gasp winner as Leicester City beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s on Saturday,.

Claude Puel rushed the pitch after the last-gasp victory, then later paid tribute to Maguire for not letting recent successes go to his head.

He didn’t change, and it was important he didn’t change after his fantastic World Cup,” said Puel. “It’s always difficult for a young player like Harry to come back and to come back with a good mentality, good focus and concentration.

That’s all important for a defender, and he came back focused and I have big respect for this. Because not a lot of players have that ability and capacity to come back and do that straight away, after a big World Cup like Harry, to come back with this good attitude and mentality.

“Now it’s important he continues to find this good stability and emotion, and it was a good reward to score that goal.”

There Is No Rift In The Arsenal Dressing Room – Matteo Guendouzi

Matteo Guendouzi has dispelled rumours of a rift in the Arsenal dressing room and says that the club can do “great things” this season.

Matteo Guendouzi has been a surprise starter for Arsenal so far this season and has enjoyed a bright start to life in North London.

However, things have not been so smooth for some of his team mates, with reports of a falling out between Mesut Ozil and new manager Unai Emery, although the boss yesterday denied the claims.

The youngster was asked about the rumoured unrest after Arsenal’s victory over West Ham but said: “No, no, no, there are never tensions.

Of course we lost the first two matches but there were very positive things in those first two matches, it should be noted,” he told RMC Sport.

“So now we won against West Ham and maybe we showed people who didn’t believe in us that we will be there this season and you have to count on us until the end of the season.

“We know what we are capable of, we have a great squad, a great staff. It’s a great club, we know we can do great things this year.”

David Luiz Admits He Would Have Left Chelsea If Antonio Conte Was Still The Manager

David Luiz has revealed it is likely he would have left Chelsea if Antonio Conte had remained as manager

David Luiz was frozen out by Antonio Conte after a reported disagreement over tactics and missed the majority of last season through injury

Like his team-mate Willian, Luiz believes he would departed this summer if Conte had remained in charge

“If the manager had stayed the same, of course, everybody knows maybe I had to move clubs. Now I am here and so happy,” Luiz told Sky Sports.

I think I always have to feel fresh start because I am getting old! It is amazing to play football, of course last season was not the best for me inside the pitch, but also I learned a lot outside the pitch as a person, as a man. It is always great to be on the pitch.

“I learned a lot, sometimes you have to be patient, sometimes you have to take care of your body, sometimes you have to learn from outside to be good in the future. So for me it was great.

“I got time to take care of my body; many times I was on the pitch in pain, and I never refused to play one game. It was good to rest and be fresh.

The ambition has to be to win every single match, every single competition,” he added.

“This is Chelsea we can’t think in a different way but we also have to have humility to understand we’re at the beginning of a new philosophy, so we start day-by-day every single week.

Michael Owen Admits He Hated Playing Football Towards The End Of His Career And Couldn’t Wait To Retire

Featured Image

Michael Owen has revealed injuries had left him “petrified” and made him hate playing football toward the end of his career.

Michael Owen scored 262 goals in 571 career appearances for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Manchester United, Stoke City and England.

The England international first suffered a torn hamstring at the age of 19, forcing him to spend five months on the sidelines, and a series of similar injuries seriously affected the second half of his career.

“Once I did it once I was gone really,” Owen told BT Sport. “I was quick, running in channels, beating people. That’s who I was — compared to the last six or so years when I turned into the only thing I could.

“I was petrified of running into a channel. I just knew I was going to tear a muscle. The worst thing about it is your instinct is to do what you have done all your life but you start thinking: ‘Oh no, don’t.’”

Injuries took their long-term toll on Owen, who admitted he could not play as the same kind of forward that he did early in his career.

“For six or seven years I hated it,” he added. “I couldn’t wait to retire.

“It wasn’t me. All I was doing is coming short, linking play and getting in the box. It ended up with people thinking I was a great goal scorer who didn’t do much else. Mentally I could do it, but physically I couldn’t.

“I admire people who can play for the love of the game. They may lose a yard of pace and they can go down a division or play against lesser teams — but, for me, it was turmoil.”

Real Valladolid President Carlos Suarez Admits Their Pitch Isn’t Up To La Liga’s Standard After Barcelona’s Complaints

Featured Image

Real Valladolid president Carlos Suarez has admitted the condition of the Jose Zorrilla stadium pitch against Barcelona was not up to La Liga standards.

La Liga have now opened disciplinary proceedings following Barca’ 1-0 win at Valladolid on Saturday.

“We thought it was going to be better than it was and that it wouldn’t come up as much as it did,” Suarez told Cadena Ser radio.

“It’s our responsibility and if a fine is given, I obviously think it will be just.”

Valladolid laid a new pitch last week for their first home league game since gaining promotion after a four-year absence. Barcelona defender Gerard Pique branded its condition as “shameful” and “deplorable.”

When you’ve just laid it out, even if it is of very good quality, it can come up, although we didn’t think it would do so as much as it did,” he added.

Unlike other clubs, including Real Sociedad and Huesca, Valladolid did not ask La Liga to change the location for their first few home games in order to allow plenty of time for the grass to be set.

“We had limited time [to lay the pitch] because we gained promotion [on June 16] and we thought we would arrive on time,” Suarez said.

Jose Mourinho Unsure About Antonio Valencia’s Fitness For Tottenham Hotspur Match

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho has said that it is still too early to tell whether Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia will be fit to return for their match with Tottenham Hotspur this evening.

Antonio Valencia is yet to feature this season due to injury, but returned to training alongside fellow doubts Nemanja Matic, Alexis Sanchez and Diogo Dalot last week.

United have had eight days to rest following their 3-2 defeat at the hands of Brighton last weekend, and The Portuguese gaffer is thankful for the extended break.

“When you have a good week when you train really well, things are positive, you expect good individual performances. You don’t expect mistakes and you expect a good result, not a defeat,” he told Sky Sports News.

“Normally when you lose you want to play immediately and two days after that was not the case. But I am happy that was not the case because in this moment we need some time. We need players to be back, we need players to train more to have a kind of pre-season after the pre-season that they didn’t have after the World Cup.

“[Valencia] is one of the guys that we have to wait and see. Not injured, training with the team Valencia, Matic, Diogo Dalot, they are all back to working with the team but it is too early today.”

Pleased with getting the win in the end?

“We knew that here is a difficult game for us, especially for us, but I think for every team. Because only in the last season Chelsea lost here, Manchester United lost here, Arsenal lost here. So I think it is not so easy to play here against this opponent. The match has maybe been more difficult. In Italy I have never seen Rafa play with five defenders and also so compact, so it was really very difficult. We needed to move the ball very fast and be patient.”

Were you angry with the apparent elbow on Giroud in the build up to the Newcastle goal?

“No, I thought only it was the first time of our opponent of our box, it is impossible, was a bit unlucky, but I don’t know if it was an elbow or not. I was far [away].

What did you make of the penalty?

“It is the same, I saw from far. The benches are on the line of the half, so for me it was really difficult for me to say if it was a penalty, the same for the action on the other side. I was about 50 or 60 metres, I am not able to say. I am not a referee and I don’t want to be a referee ever.”

Did Giroud suffer?

“I don’t know.”

Was it a real test of character to come through?

“I think so. To win here is difficult, it is very difficult for Chelsea and for every team. To draw with five minutes to the end for us it would have been more difficult. I think that this team from a character point of view is a strong team.”

Hazard’s first start…

“I think he played very well. Maybe it would have been better for him in this moment to play 70 or 75 minutes, but after the first goal Kovacic asked me to make the substitution. So it was the preferred [option], so it was impossible for him to rest.”

“I don’t know. In Italy it was usual, of course not against Inter, Rome, Juventus but if we played against the last ten in the table, it was usual. I don’t know about here in England.”

What does it mean to be top now?

“Nothing, I think. The league is on 38 matches, so after three… it is important to start very well. But now the table is not important.”

Impressed with Hazard not losing his head over being fouled?

“Like usual, he is used to have this kind of attitude. In a normal way I think.”
