Nigeria Speaks On Plans To Sell NLNG

Nigeria Speaks On Plans To Sell NLNG

The Federal Government on Tuesday, August 28, denied that there were plans to sell the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG).

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, dismissed the speculations during an investigative hearing by House of Representatives Committee on Gas Resources and Allied Matters in Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of the minister, the Director, Gas Resources in the ministry, said that they were not aware of any plans to sell NLNG by the Federal Government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the documents submitted by the ministry and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on the issue, though harmonized, were not accepted by the committee because of identified issues.

The committee discovered irregularities in the documents as presented by NNPC’s Chief Operating Officer (Upstream), Mr Bello Rabiu, who represented the Group Managing Director (GMD), Baru Maikanti.

The committee also pointed out that the documents were not authenticated as they were unsigned.

This was in spite of the explanation by representative of the GMD that the documents may be different but that the figures were the same.

Also, the lawmakers queried NNPC and the Petroleum Ministry over some increases in the upgrade contract of OML 58 and the execution of the Northern Option pipeline.

Jamie Vardy And Gary Cahill Announce Retirement From International Football

Featured Image

Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill have announced their retirement from the England national team

Vardy and Cahill were involved in Gareth Southgate’s side that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, marking their country’s best finish since 1990.

However, they have confirmed that they will be stepping down from the set-up to offer the younger generations an opportunity to represent their country.

“This has been on my mind for a while,” Vardy, 31, told the Guardian.

“I’m not getting any younger and you can see, to be fair to the gaffer, he wants to make it more youthful, which obviously had its benefits during the World Cup – we got to the semi-finals and finished fourth, which is equal to the furthest we have ever been on foreign soil.

“So I just said to Gareth [Southgate] that I think it’s probably best from now on, especially with the way he wants to go, to bring youngsters in who he thinks have got the ability and start nurturing them into international football.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea defender Cahill will end an eight-year career with England after amassing 61 caps.

“I think in terms of my international future I think it’s time I take a step back now. I feel that it’s the right moment to do that,” Cahill told Chelsea TV.

“I have been hugely proud of what I have achieved in terms of over 60 caps, I’ve captained my country on a few occasions which has been a huge honour, it’s something I have been really proud of in terms of my career.

“I can see now it’s going in a younger generation and I think for me to take a step back now is the perfect time.”

IT’S OFFICIAL: Mourinho’s Manchester United Are In Crisis!

Featured Image

It’s Official: Mourinho’s Manchester United Are In Crisis! – Kris Voakes

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

There can be no doubt now as to whether Manchester United’s malaise has turned into a full-blown crisis.

Monday’s 3-0 home loss to a Tottenham Hotspur side that normally find it so hard to express themselves at Old Trafford dumps United into a pit that they look ill-prepared to dig themselves out of.

With their various issues having been played out in public over the last couple of months, their fortunes on the field are in every respect mirroring their issues behind the scenes.

Last week’s defeat at Brighton showcased a lack of heart, direction and courage, and while against Spurs they had more of each, they were outclassed when it was necessary in an abysmal second-half showing.

Jose Mourinho’s selection of Ander Herrera as a centre-back smacked of an act of desperation, maybe even an attempt to prove a point to his superiors. But while the Spaniard battled away well in the unfamiliar role, it was a move which would come back to bite the manager.

His decision to boldly change to a completely new back three of Herrera, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones and make a total of six changes had Spurs startled to begin with but there was little sign that United were actually going to make the most of their early running.

Romelu Lukaku’s inability to make the most of Danny Rose’s short backpass in the first half loomed large over the match, and by the time half-time was approaching it was Spurs making all the headway.

The visitors should have had a penalty during that spell after Phil Jones’ clumsy challenge caught Lucas Moura’s leg and brought down the Brazilian, but referee Craig Pawson waved away Spurs’ claims.

There would be no saving United’s bacon after the break though. Harry Kane opened the floodgates with his first-ever Old Trafford goal when he easily lost Phil Jones to power home a header from Kieran Trippier’s right-wing corner, then within 133 seconds Lucas pounced after Herrera dropped five yards deeper than Smalling and played the Brazilian onside as Christian Eriksen roamed free on the right.

It could have got worse, with substitute Victor Lindelof handing the ball on a plate to Dele Alli only for the England attacker to waste the chance.

United’s awful play in their own half was unbecoming of any top-level side and only served to underline Mourinho’s concerns over the ability of his current squad to protect David de Gea in a title challenge.

For too much of the game United looked utterly rudderless. The manner of their second-half performance was in many reminiscent of their Champions League exit to Sevilla last season. A quick counter-punch amid a period of utter chaos.

The third goal always looked likely to come on the break late on and Smalling’s bumbling attempt to stop Lucas on the break was symptomatic of their evening. The sight of the net rippling for a third time led to a mass exodus in the stands.

Ed Woodward has told the world that he doesn’t trust his manager with any more of his money, Mourinho himself has made it be known he does not have the requisite faith in his defence to do the job for him.

Paul Pogba has said there are issues he cannot talk about for fear of being fined, while Anthony Martial has become more a pawn in a political game being played out by Woodward and Mourinho than an attacker of high quality.

All the while, United have now lost two of their opening three league fixtures for the first time since 1992-93. They went on to win the Premier League that season under Sir Alex Ferguson but the club is in a very different state right now and there are very few Eric Cantonas going cheap on the market these days.

With the club’s main figures on the verge of all-out warfare and their team looking completely devoid of confidence or ideas, things need to come to a head sooner rather than later at Manchester United. The club is in a self-made crisis, and the sooner they do something about it one way or another the better.

UK Gives Nigeria £70million Stolen By A Nigerian Citizen

The United Kingdom (UK) said it has returned the sum of £70 million stolen by an unnamed Nigerian citizen who was convicted of fraud in an Italian court.

German Chancellor Merkel To Visit Buhari In Abuja

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Paul Arkwright, who made this known while speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Monday, however, declined to disclose the identity of the person involved in the offence.

He said, “There was an Italian court case with a particular person involved. A portion of the fund has been in the UK and that was the portion that was returned recently from the UK to Nigeria. So, it’s in that context that the £70 million was returned.”

He said more funds would be repatriated, stressing that his country was working with the Federal Government to accelerate the legal process of returning the looted money.

“The British government has no intention of keeping one kobo of Nigerian funds in the UK, it all must come back to Nigeria. Just as in Nigeria, the UK feels that the judicial process is important, and we have to go through those processes before the money can be returned,” he added.

Arkwright also confirmed that British Prime Minister Theresa May will visit Nigeria as part of her visit to Africa.

According to him, security, trade, investment and 2019 elections will top the discussion between the British Prime Minister and the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ronaldo’s bicycle kick against Juventus wins UEFA Goal of the Season

Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning bicycle kick for Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final clash with Juventus has been voted UEFA’s Goal of the Season for 2018.

The former Real Madrid striker, who has now joined the Bianconeri, beat off competition from 11 nominees from the various UEFA competitions to win the award for his goal in last season’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg.

Ronaldo’s strike, which was applauded on the night by his opposing – and it turned out future – fans, topped the poll with nearly 200,000 of the total 346,915 votes.

He succeeds his new Juve colleague Mario Mandžukić, who won last year for goal against Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final, while Lionel Messi took the award in both 2014/15 and 2015/16.

Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen was also among the nominees for his counterattack finish in Denmark’s World Cup playoff victory over the Republic of Ireland.

Brits Lucy Bronze and Elliot Embleton were also on the list but missed out.

6,000 Party Members Dump APC, PDP, And AD For ADC

About 6,000 members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in the Ogun East senatorial district on Monday, August 27, defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

A statement issued yesterday revealed that the politicians were led by a former member of the AD in Ijebu Ode, Abayomi Mighty.

They were said to have been received into the ADC by the Ogun East Senatorial Chairman of the party,  Ladi Odujirin, at an event at the Ijebu Ode campaign office of Deji Ashiru, the ADC Ogun East senatorial aspirant.

“Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Mighty said they moved to ADC to support Ashiru’s senatorial bid and the party’s ideology of togetherness.

“Mighty, who was once a Nigerian Youth Ambassador to the United Nations, equally mentioned opportunities offered youths by the ADC, as another major reason for their defection.

“Addressing the new party members, Odujirin assured them of a level playing field. He explained that the party was open to any individual or groups who crave for good governance.

“Odujirin, who expressed confidence that the party will win the governorship of Ogun State in 2019, enjoined the new members to continue to mobilize support for ADC.

“The Ogun East senatorial aspirant of the party,  Deji Ashiru, said his aspiration was informed by his desire to engender meaningful development in Ogun East,  through quality legislation,” the statement said.

Liverpool Appoint Long Throw World Record-holder Thomas Gronnemark As Coach

Featured Image

Liverpool have appointed the world-record holder for the longest throw-in Thomas Gronnemark as a part-time coach on Jurgen Klopp’s backroom staff.

Thomas Gronnemark, who considers himself a professional throw-in coach and threw a football 51.33 metres in June 2010, has been hired by the club to improve their threat in dead-ball situations.

Gronnemark worked with Liverpool players during a preseason training camp as Klopp hoped to strengthen his side’s ability to retain possession after throw-ins.

Although Gronnemark is known for his long throws, he also advises players on how to use the restart to trigger their side’s attack and how to avoid putting teammates in a position where they can lose possession.

Gronnemark was most recently an assistant coach at Midtjylland and has also worked for Horsens and Viborg, as well as held sessions with the Denmark national team.

Speaking after his appointment, the newest Red said: “Midtjylland showed that the long throw-in can be a weapon, if you can do it with the correct technique, precision and tactical awareness.

“It’s very important that it’s a flat throw, because if it’s too high it’s easy to defend.

“If you can make a long throw-in precise and flat, together with some tactical aspects, then it’s much easier to score.”

La Liga Close Down Rayo Vallecano’s Stadium Due To Safety Concerns

Featured Image

La Liga side Rayo Vallecano’s Vallecas stadium will be closed until at least mid-October because of safety concerns regarding renovation work.

The match between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Bilbao, scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed and the games against Alaves and Espanyol are at risk too.

Options being discussed include reversing the fixtures so Rayo play away, or holding them behind closed doors.

“Today the community of Madrid told La Liga their decision not to hold any events with fans at the stadium from September 1 until the end of the works being done there,” La Liga said in a statement.

Fans complained after the stadium was in a dangerous state during the 4-1 defeat by Sevilla on the opening weekend, with debris, dust and poles left out.

Construction company Fonsan requested an extension on the project which was granted by the community of Madrid which owns the stadium.

Brazil Call-up Richarlison To National Team After Impressive Start To Life At Everton

Featured Image

Brazil have called up Everton winger Richarlison for the first time to their squad for two friendly games in the United States in September.

Richarlison has replaced Fluminense’s Pedro, who twisted his right knee in his team’s 2-1 defeat at Cruzeiro on Sunday.

Neymar and Philippe Coutinho are included in a strong Brazil squad, with Manchester United’s Andreas Pereira among the new names announced.

The Brazil coaching staff has called up Everton attacker Richarlison,” the Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed in a statement.

“The player will form part of the team that will take on the United States and El Salvador on September 7 and 11.

“Richarlison will replace the attacker Pedro. The Fluminense player suffered an injury in his right knee playing against Cruzeiro in the Brazilian Championship, on Saturday.”

Richarlison moved from Watford in July in a five-year deal that could reportedly be worth more than £50 million.

The Brazilian was sent off on Saturday in Everton’s 2-2 draw at Bournemouth after trying to head butt an opponent.

Brazil will play the U.S. on Sept. 7 and El Salvador four days later in their first games since the World Cup quarterfinal defeat against Belgium.

The games are part of Brazil’s preparation for Copa America, which they will host in 2019.

Gary Neville Insists Manchester United Must Not Sack Jose Mourinho

Featured Image

Manchester United must not sack manager Jose Mourinho despite the club’s dismal start to the Premier League campaign, former defender Gary Neville has said.

Manchester United’s 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham was their second in their opening three matches of the season

Mourinho signed a contract extension in January to keep him at United until 2020 and Neville said he must be given the chance to turn the team’s fortunes around.

“We saw Louis van Gaal sacked after an FA Cup final victory, we saw David Moyes sacked with four games to go of a season, so we are no longer talking about a club that is behaving as it has historically done,” he told Sky Sport’s Monday Night Football.

“I accept these are different times and I accept the difficulties and challenges, but my honest view as I stand here now is that Ed Woodward gave him a contract last season. He should see that contract through to the end and do the job.

“You can’t keep jumping around with managers. ”

Meanwhile, Harry Kane says Tottenham’s win is a big statement to their title rivals.

“It’s massive, just what we needed,” said Kane, who opened the scoring in the rout.

“We wanted to put a statement out there. We need to kill teams off, especially away from home. After the goal we had the high press, we were playing it quicker, moving in behind and punished them when we needed to.

“We took our chances and coming here to Old Trafford and winning 3-0 is a big, big result.”

Tottenham Striker Harry Kane Delivers Premier League Title Prediction After Massive Victory Over Manchester United

Featured Image

Harry Kane believes that Tottenham’s 3-0 win against Manchester United will send out “a big statement” to the rest of his side’s Premier League title rivals.

Tottenham maintained their perfect start to the season three wins from three games on Monday night

Tottenham are now up to second in the early standings, behind leaders Liverpool on goal difference, and Kane – the scorer of Spurs opening goal this evening – is now intent on making some history over the coming months.

“That’s massive. To come here and win the way we did is a big statement,” he told Sky Sports News. “Three wins out of three, it’s a fantastic start. We did well to come in at 0-0 at half time. In the big games, the first goal is so important. We then saw the game out great. This is the only way we’re going to win the league.

“The top six is so strong now you have to stay at the top all the way through. This will give us huge belief and this is the type of game we have to win. We’re trying to create our own history. We’re not a club who have been at the top of the league winning titles like United and Chelsea. We’ve been doing well but we’ve not quite got there.

“We’ve got the hunger and the desire to take the club to the next level. For us, it’s a about building what we’ve been doing for the last four of five years now. We’ve got so much belief in each other. A lot of us have been playing for a while now and that always helps.

“You’re not going to play well every game, but we stuck together and we kept going. The gaffer said he’s not going to bring players in for the sake of it. He believes in this squad and that’s a huge bonus for us. We have to prove him right and prove the club right as well.”

Lifeless President: Nigerian Govt Speaks On Trump’s statement To Buhari

The Federal Government of Nigeria has questioned the veracity of a statement credited to the US President Donald Trump which alleged that he described President Muhammadu Buhari as a “lifeless leader.”

Trump Never Wants To Meet Someone As Lifeless As Buhari Again

The world’s leading global business publication, Financial Times reported on Monday, that Trump told his aides that he never wanted to meet someone as lifeless as Buhari again.

This was said to have occurred shortly after a meeting between the two leaders on April 30.

“The first meeting, with Nigeria’s ailing 75-year-old Muhammadu Buhari in April, ended with the US president telling aides he never wanted to meet someone so lifeless again, according to three people familiar with the matter,” the newspaper claimed.

However, in his reaction, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that if Trump said so, it would be of no significance since the President of the United States of America had earlier publicly endorsed Buhari.

Mohammed told The Punch:

“I doubt the authenticity of the claim that the President of the USA said that.

“But if truly he said so, then it is of no significance to us.

“This is because the same Trump publicly endorsed and applauded the President for a job well done.”

Jose Mourinho Walks Out Of Press Conference After Tottenham Loss, Slams Media For Orchestrating Campaign Against Him

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho ended his press conference early by demanding to be shown more respect following Manchester United’s embarrassing home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Mourinho endured a very spiky press conference after a 3-0 defeat to Tottenham, his heaviest home loss in management, which left the side 13th in the table with just one win from their opening three matches.

His closing gambit was to inform the media he needs more “respect”, because he has won more Premier League titles than the other 19 top-flight bosses combined.

“We lost a game because we conceded a goal from the first corner of the match against us,” he said.

“In the first half zero corners, zero free-kicks, on minute 50-something they had one corner and scored a goal, and you want, with that goal, you want to transform the story of the game.

“But don’t lose your time. Today I had the proof the best judge in football are the supporters.”

When it was suggested to Mourinho many had walked out before the end, he added: “I would do the same, losing 3-0 and taking two hours from here to the centre of Manchester.”

The Portuguese then went on the offensive, suggesting those in the media questioning him were orchestrating a campaign.

“Keep trying. Keep trying. Keep trying. We lost last season here against Sevilla and were booed because we deserved it, because we were not good,” he said.

“Today the players left the pitch after losing at home and they were applauded because they deserved it.

“So keep trying. Do you know what was the result? Three-nil. Do you know what this means (holding up three fingers)?

“Three-nil but it also means three Premier Leagues and I won more alone than the other 19 managers together. Three for me and two for them.”

Jose Mourinho then left his seat repeating “respect, respect, respect” as he walked out of the press conference.

Jose Mourinho Needs To Spend Another £200m On Transfers – Jamie Carragher

Featured Image

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has suggested that it will take another huge amount of new signings if Manchester United are to seriously challenge for the Premier League title.

Manchester United are now 13th place in the early-season standings after suffering back-to-back defeats, following up their 3-2 setback at Brighton with a 3-0 loss at home to Tottenham on Monday night.

The Red Devils have lost two consecutive league games and two of their opening three fixtures for the first time since 1992-93.

Despite spending more than £400m on players since Jose Mourinho took charge a little over two years ago, Jamie Carragher expects United to fall short again this season with those available to him.

“We saw the side of United tonight where they’re still fighting. The worrying thing is if you’ve got that in a game, and you’re still losing 3-0,” he told Sky Sports News.

“There’s a serious lack of quality, if you’ve spent £400m on a squad. How do you lose 3-0? That’s a team that looks like it still needs £200m spent on it. Some of the defenders there. What’s happened at United in terms of buying two £30m centre-backs?

“I can’t really criticise [Victor] Lindelof because it gets to the stage that he’s so far out of his depth that you start to feel sorry for him.

“In terms of [Phil] Jones and [Chris] Smalling, have they improved since Mourinho came in? They’ve been playing for a long time, and it shouldn’t really be happening at this level.”

NBC Reveals Broadcasting Stations That Would Be Shut Down On Sept 15

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has revealed that it would shut down radio and television stations owing the commission licensing fees.

Speaking on Monday at a news briefing in Lagos after a meeting with the stakeholders in the broadcasting industry, the Director General, Is’haq Modibbo-Kawu, said that any broadcasting station that failed to come up with a payment plan before September 15 would be shut down.

He said that the broadcasting stations are owing the commission N4.3 billion.

According to him, there was an agreement between the stakeholders and the NBC in February 2017 on how to recover the debt. He said the stations had reneged on the agreement.

He said that it would not be ideal to mention the broadcasting stations due to the relationship between the parties and that the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) and NBC would be meeting.

His words: ”There will be a consultative meeting between BON and NBC.

”Stations must try to regularise or work on a payment plan. The truth of the matter is if there is nothing definite done by trying to pay the money owed NBC we are going to close down quite a number of radio and television stations.

”Especially because we know that a lot of them are targeting elections and the money they will make.

”We will make it impossible for them to make that money because if they do not pay their licensing fees, then they have no right to enjoy any freebies from elections.”

Mr Modibbo-Kawu said that the commission does not ban songs, but certain songs cannot be broadcast due to their content.

Leah Sharibu Reportedly Begs Buhari To Rescue Her From Boko Haram Captivity

Leah Sharibu, the Christian schoolgirl abducted along with others from the Government Girls Secondary School,  Dapchi in Yobe State by Boko Haram terrorists, has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to help get her out of captivity.

In the 35 seconds audio obtained by TheCable, Sharibu, who spoke in Hausa Language said:

“I am Leah Sharibu, the girl that was abducted in GGSS Dapchi. I am calling on the government and people of goodwill to intervene to get me out of my current situation. “I also plead to members of the public to help my mother, my father, my younger brother and relatives.

“Kindly help me out of my predicament. I am begging you to treat me with compassion. I am calling on the government, particularly the President to pity me and get me out of this serious situation. Thank you.”

Sources told the news outlet that the audio as well as pictures were part of the proof of life requirement in a possible renewed negotiation efforts between the government and ISWAP members.

The release of Sharibu’s school mates on March 21, 2018 reportedly followed what sources said had to do with the intervention of IS in Iraq and Syria.

Meanwhile, the Presidency said the Department of State Services (DSS) was probing the audio which was released and was purported to be the voice of Leah Sharibu, who is still in captivity.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a message he posted on his Twitter handle, @GarShehu.

The presidential spokesman wrote, “We are aware of the audio in circulation concerning the unfortunate situation of our daughter, Leah Sharibu.

“In dealing with terrorists, nothing is too trivial.

“The secret service is analysing the voice. Our reaction will follow the outcome of the investigation.

“For President Buhari, nothing will be spared in bringing all our girls home.

“He will not rest until all of them are freed.”
