Andrew Robertson has been named as the new captain of the Scotland national team.

Andrew Robertson, who has 22 caps for his country, takes over from Scott Brown following his retirement earlier this year.

“It’s a massive honour for me and my family – it’s a great day for us,” Robertson said of his appointment. “I’m looking forward to leading the team out on Friday, and leading them out in the future.

“It’s probably the pinnacle of my career. I look forward to trying to lead this country back to major tournaments.”

Scotland manager Alex McLeish added: “Andy was the outstanding candidate. His rise-and-rise at Liverpool and at national level was sensational.

“He carries himself well and is a tremendous professional. I know a lot of players inspire each other and Andy is an inspirational figure.

“The story of his career is fairytale stuff – when you consider he’s had setbacks a couple of times; it is the epitome of a true Scot to never give up.”

Manchester United Midfielder Nemanja Matic Defends Jose Mourinho From Recent Criticism

Featured Image

Nemanja Matic has defended Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho from recent criticism by insisting that he “knows what he is doing”.

Various reports have suggested that Manchester United squad have become increasingly frustrated by Jose Mourinho’s demeanour and underwhelming start to the new season, which has seen them lose two and win two of their opening four games.

Asked about Mourinho at a press conference following United’s 2-0 victory at Burnley on Sunday, Matic said: “He knows what he is doing for sure. You probably know that also. It’s good for us also. He is one of the best managers in the world, you know what he won in his career so that shows you everything.

“I think he is dealing very well with the pressure. That is why he is here in Manchester United. I don’t see any difference.”

On rivals Liverpool, who sit top of the table after a 100% start, Matic added: “They also have to win all games, and I think that’s impossible. Someone needs to lose to drop the points and it’s still too early to say something. We will see in March where we are because in March you can see who is fighting for the title, who is not, who is fighting to be in the top four. It is still too early.”

Liverpool Captain Jordan Henderson Signs New Long-term Contract With Club

Featured Image

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has signed a new “long-term” contract at the club

Jordan Henderson had been under contract with Liverpool until the end of next season but has now agreed terms to remain at the club until at least 2023.

Henderson joined Liverpool from Sunderland in 2011, told the club’s website: “I’m very happy to have signed a new contract for a long period of time. I’m absolutely delighted.

“It doesn’t seem like too long ago when I signed my first one – it feels like yesterday, really – but a lot has happened since then. I feel it’s been a progressive journey for me throughout my time here and one I’ve enjoyed so much.

“There is no other place in the world I would rather play football. I want to be here for as long as I can be. I’m so privileged to have been a part of this club for so long, and hopefully even longer now.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp added: “It is fantastic news but should not be a surprise to anyone – he is perfect for us and we for him, I think.

“Jordan embodies entirely what it means to be a Liverpool player in this modern era of football. You can tell through his actions on and off the pitch he treats representing our badge and our shirt as a privilege. He takes nothing for granted and strives to learn and be better for his team at all times.

“He carries a lot on his shoulders that people on the outside won’t see, but he embraces that responsibility and that leadership. He is our ‘General’ and I trust him completely. But the best thing is, I think – in fact, I know – he will get even better in these coming years. And this improvement will come from a very high base already.”

JAMB Reveals How It Will Avoid Clash Between 2019 UTME And Elections

JAMB Reveals How It Will Avoid Clash Between 2019 UTME And General Elections

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has said that the 2019 general elections would not affect the board’s 2019/2020 examination.

He made this remark while fielding questions from journalists shortly after delivering the 2018 Annual Sobo Sowemimo Lecture of the Abeokuta Club in Abeokuta.

Oloyede said that since the Independent National Electoral Commission had given the dates of the elections, then the board would only need to adjust accordingly.

“I don’t think there will be any need for a shift in the examination date because of the 2019 general elections. I believe INEC has done well by giving us a prior notice six months ago.

2018 UTME: JAMB Reveals Number Of Candidates That Have Gained Admission So Far

“They have given us the date of the elections. So we have no excuse not to have adjusted. We have adjusted appropriately,” he said.

Oloyede decried the rate at which candidates, who were not qualified to write the examination applied for it, thereby, causing what he described as “unnecessary luggage” on the board.

He said that the examination body would adopt stiffer measures to check incidences of unqualified candidates from applying and writing the examination for the 2019/2020 admission exercise.

Oloyede noted that JAMB would not allow anyone to take undue advantage over others, saying the board would not repeat the mistake it recorded in the last examination as regards this development.

The JAMB registrar said the body would begin the 2019/2020 examination process by October, promising that the procedure for the next examination would be better than the last one.

“We are on with the 2018/2019 admission exercise. This, we started just about a month ago. We believe that by the end of October, we would then begin the 2019/2020 admission.

“I can assure you that we are fine-tuning and learning from our mistakes last year. We are perfecting the processes and procedures, ensuring that no one is allowed to have undue advantage over the others.

Oloyede, who did not disclose the exact number of the applicants expected for the 2019 exercise, said measures had been put in place to ensure that all applicants are minimally qualified.

JAMB Registrar Speaks On Reduction Of UTME Registration Fee

“It is difficult to say the exact number of applicants we are expecting this time. We expect to crash the number because many of those who are taking the forms are not even prepared or qualified for the exam.

“Some are SS1 students, who are just trying; contributing N5,000 unduly to our purse. We are putting in place some checks to make people who want to apply to be minimally qualified.

“That’s where we are moving to, rather than creating unrealistic figures. We cannot say actually this is the figure but we are trying to ensure that we don’t have unnecessary luggage.

“We are not interested in the money. We are interested in having adequate preparation for those who are genuine students,” he added.

Ronaldo Buys Real Valladolid, Becomes Primary Owner After £27m Takeover

Former Brazilian striker Ronaldo has bought La Liga club Real Valladolid following the completion of his takeover for €30m (£27m).

The Brazil and Real Madrid legend now owns 51 percent of the club and has been unveiled in the town’s city hall alongside current majority owner and president Carlos Suarez and city mayor Oscar Puente on Monday.

At a press conference held in the city’s town hall, Valladolid president Carlos Suarez said:

“Today is a starting point. Ronaldo personally acquires 51 percent of the shares of Real Valladolid.”

“He is an idol that loves and spreads a dream.”

Ronaldo played in Spain for Real Madrid and Barcelona, while also winning the World Cup twice with Brazil.

“This is a very important day for me,” he said. “I’ve gone through a lot to prepare both within the game and outside it.

“You can count on us to consolidate Real Valladolid in the top division and to keep building our dream.”

It is understood that Valladolid have €25m of debt and Ronaldo’s plans have seemingly beaten out bigger offers from China and Latin America.

Valladolid earned promotion to the top tier last season and sit 16th, after two draws and a defeat from their opening three games.

La Liga also opened an investigation last month into the poor condition of the club’s pitch at their Jose Zorrilla stadium, following a 1-0 loss to Barcelona.

Ronaldo will bring a sprinkling of stardust, with the former forward widely regarded as one of the game’s greatest ever players.

He retired in 2011, having been named Fifa World Player of the Year in 1996, 1997 and 2002.

The 41-year-old has appealed to the Valladolid fans to help shape the club’s future.

“I want everyone to be a part of this club and I invite the fans to participate in this project,” he said.

“To give us ideas, opinions, criticisms and aspirations. I want you to be part of the present and future of Real Valladolid.”

Liverpool Defender Joe Gomez Defends Alisson Becker After His Error Against Leicester City

Featured Image

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has urged Alisson Becker not to change his style of play despite his embarrassing error gifting Leicester City a goal this weekend

Alisson was caught in possession when trying to take the ball past Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho, allowing the Nigerian international to tee up Rachid Ghezzal for his first Leicester goal.

It was also the first goal Liverpool had conceded this season, but Liverpool held on to maintain their 100% start and Gomez insists that the defence still has confidence in the keeper.

“That is his style of play and I think everyone wants him to continue doing that. All the time he gives us that confidence that we can play and it relieves a lot of pressure for us. Everyone has their style of play and we don’t want him to change. I think he’s confident and will continue to do so,” Gomez told reporters.

“I think we deserved to win. Obviously it’s important that we can see out the result and get the three points. We’re happy to do that because it’s not an easy place to come but we deserved it in the end. As a team we play for clean sheets, that is important and it’s the foundation for you because if they don’t score you can’t lose. It’s going to happen though, we’re bound to concede goals but the main thing is the reaction.

“We didn’t drop our heads and we knew we could withstand the pressure and that is the main thing. We’ll take the three points over the clean sheet. It’s all about getting results. We’re not always going to have the best performances but we’ll take the result every day of the week. I think there were times last season when we might not have seen games out and we want to try and correct that this year.

“These could be valuable points come the end of the season. The main thing is that we’ve come away with 12 points [from 12]. I’m happy we’ve had a good run so far but it’s about continuing it now. Every game is different, we’ve had different challenges over the four games so far and it’s about adapting. It’s very early days and we all know that but we want to keep the momentum going after the international break.”

Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp “Very Happy” With Alisson’s Error Vs Leicester City

Featured Image

Jurgen Klopp has insisted that he was “really happy” with Alisson Becker’s error in Saturday’s Premier League match with Leicester City.

Alisson Becker was dispossessed by Kelechi Iheanacho inside his own box during the match, and he then squared for Rachid Ghezzal to find the back of the net.

Ghezzal’s strike is the only goal that Liverpool have conceded this season, and Klopp has claimed that he was glad the mistake occurred so they ‘do not have to wait for it now’.

“He is 0.0% arrogant, but he’s confident and he can do it. It’s like when our centre-halves play passes,” Klopp told reporters. “They have to play passes and defend and all that stuff. I don’t look for anyone responsible, the final one was Alisson but we should have cleared the situation before.

“It wasn’t a situation where you pass the ball back. We make decisions in a second and in a second you realise, ‘That was the wrong one’. I think that was this situation. To be 100% honest I am really happy it happened, because we don’t have to wait for it now.”
