Osinbajo Says Atiku’s Understanding Of Restructuring Is Vague – Ex-VP Fires Back

Nigeria’s current Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has replied a former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, noting that his concept of restructuring is vague.

Calls for the restructuring of World’s most populous black nation have been on the front burner under this administration, with political bigwigs disagreeing on whether the country should be restructured or not.

Buhari Refuses To Sign Electoral Bill, Gives Reasons

While the debate had calmed in recent weeks, the VP raised the dust in a statement on Monday when he had said the problem with Nigeria is not a matter of simple geographical restructuring but “about managing resources properly and providing for the people properly, that is what it is all about”.

Reacting to Osinbanjo’s stance, Abubakar said the vice-president demonstrated “a lack of appreciation of the core tenets of the concept”.

“It is a surprise that the vice-president would take such a position and, in particular, fail to appreciate the connection between Nigeria’s defective structure and its underperformance,” Abubakar had said.

“It is unhelpful to reduce the construct of ‘Restructuring’ to a geographical concept as VP Osinbajo does, which in itself demonstrates a lack of appreciation of the core tenets of the concept.”

Reacting to Abubakar’s comment on his stance, osinbajo said the ex-VP mixed up the concept of restructuring with “issues of good governance and diversification of the economy”.

“Alhaji Atiku’s concept of restructuring is understandably vague, because he seeks to cover every aspect of human existence in that definition. He says it means a “cultural revolution”,” Osinbajo said.

“Of course, he does not bother to unravel this concept. He says we need a structure that gives everyone an opportunity to work, a private sector driven economy,” Osinbajo said.

Clearly unwilling to bow to Osinbajo’s stance, Mr Abubakar, in a statement he signed, also accused the VP of attempting “to revise history” on the topic.

He said while Osinbajo could change his stance on the call for restructuring, he should not “use one finger to hide behind semantics”.

“True progressives know that Nigeria needs to be restructured and restructured soon,” Atiku said.

“My advice to the Vice President is that he should choose whether he is for restructuring or whether he is against it and stick to his choice. This continuous prevarication, this approbation and reprobation, helps no one, least of all true progressives who know that Nigeria needs to be restructured and restructured soon.”

“For the Vice President to say “Alhaji Atiku’s concept of restructuring is understandably vague, because he seeks to cover every aspect of human existence in that definition”, is most unfortunate.

“I am hard pressed to see how these clear and specific ideas can be described as ‘vague’. One would have thought that if anything is vague, it would be the idea of ‘geographic restructuring’ whose meaning is hanging in the air.”

Mourinho Sentenced To 365-Day Jail Term For Tax Fraud

Mourinho Sentenced To 365-Day Jail Term For Tax Fraud

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is said to have accepted a one-year prison sentence as part of a plea bargain deal with prosecutors accusing him of a £2.9million (€3.3m) tax fraud.

Ronaldo Buys Real Valladolid, Becomes Primary Owner After £27m Takeover

He was accused of owing nearly €3.3m in undeclared image rights revenue for 2011 and 2012 when he was Real Madrid manager.

It was gathered that the former Real Madrid coach has accepted a six-month jail sentence for each of the two financial crimes he was accused of after accepting wrongdoing as part of the agreement with prosecutors, respected Spanish newspaper El Mundo said on Tuesday.

The good news is that he is not expected to serve any time in jail because Spanish law states that a sentence of under two years for a first offence can be served on probation.

Spanish prosecutors filed a claim against Mourinho June last year on two counts of tax fraud.

Jose Mourinho Responds To Reports Suggesting He Told Manchester United Board Not To Sign Cristiano Ronaldo

He has also agreed to a fine equivalent to 60 per cent of the amount defrauded, or €1.98 million (£1.78 million), although payments he has already made means he will only have to hand over €669,323 (£603,000) to the Spanish treasury, according to the report.

The charges relate to income for image rights in 2011 and 2012 that were said to have been hidden from tax authorities by being funnelled through a British Virgin Islands company, Koper Services, and Irish and Swiss companies, before ending up in the New Zealand-based Kaitaia Trust which had Mourinho’s wife and children as named beneficiaries.

Spain has cracked down on tax evasion, with United winger Alexis Sanchez accepting a 16-month prison term. Cristiano Ronaldo, who played under Mourinho at Real, got a suspended two-year term and was fined nearly £17 million.

Donald Duke Dumps PDP, Picks Presidential Form Under SDP

A former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and picked the N1m Expression of Interest form of the Social Democratic Party in order to contest for the Presidency on the platform of the SDP.

Mr Duke, a two-term governor of Cross River State on the platform of the PDP, had been expected to run on the party’s platform.

He, however, announced his decision at the national secretariat of the SDP on Tuesday afternoon where he was received by the national secretary, Shehu Gabam, the publicity secretary, Alfa Mohammed, amongst others.

He said he left his party of about 20 years because it had derailed and lost its values and was not the same party he joined back then.

Duke also questioned the decision of the PDP to zone the Presidency to the North.

He said, “I was a member of the PDP but over the years we saw the fortunes and the values of the party dwindle. When a former President walks out of his party, you know there is something. Over the years, you will see that it lost its values and became a shadow of itself.

“That the PDP is zoning today is actually a betrayal of those ideals it started off with because it was a national organisation. Today, in some parts of the country, it is hardly in existence.”

The former governor lamented the high rate of poverty and unemployment.

Klopp And Liverpool Squad Agree Complacency Must Be Avoided

Featured Image

Liverpool are on a roll and Jurgen Klopp and his men believe avoiding complacency is key to maintaining their run.

Liverpool have won their first four games, and are keen on continuing their run after the international break.

“Result-wise it could not have been better,” Klopp said. “Performance-wise, we know that we can improve.”

It’s a mantra he has repeated after each of his side’s last three games, and one his players were swift to repeat in the mixed zone at the King Power Stadium.

“It’s all about getting results,” said defender Joe Gomez, one of the stars of the opening weeks of the campaign. “We’re not always going to have the best performances but we’ll take the result any day of the week. I’m happy we’ve had a good run so far but it’s about continuing it now.”

Andy Robertson was next. “We’re still a work in progress,” admitted the new Scotland captain. “I think there’s a lot more to come.”

Finally came Gini Wijnaldum, washbag in hand, trademark smile on face. Same message.

“We have to do things better,” he said. “But the result is the most important thing.”

Students Stranded As Plateau Tertiary Institutions Begin Indefinite Strike

Students Stranded As Plateau Tertiary Institutions Begin Indefinite Strike

Students have been left stranded as the Joint Union of Plateau State Owned Tertiary Institutions (JUPTI) on Monday, September 3, embarked on an indefinite strike over five months salary arrears.

The industrial action is coming on the back of a letter dated August 23, which was signed by Paul Dakogol and Ayum Solomon, JUPTI chairman and secretary, respectively.

In the letter, the union gave government a seven-day ultimatum within which the arrears should be paid or face the consequences.

Luka Panpe, Secretary, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Plateau Polytechnic Chapter, and a member of JUPTI, told NAN that the strike became necessary following the failure of the government to keep to its side of the bargain.

He said the union had reached an agreement with the government who promised to clear the salary arrears before the end of 2017 but failed.

“Our five months salaries was withheld because of the no work, no pay policy introduced by the previous administration. We took government to court in search of justice,” he said.

“But when the current government came on board, it pleaded with us to suspend our strike and withdraw the case from court, with a promise to pay us before the end of 2016, and we did.

“However, due to government’s failure to keep to its part of the agreement for the whole of 2016 and 2017, we again met with it in February. 2018. It promised to pay the arrears between April and July.

“We are now in September, and they haven’t said anything, and we have not seen any readiness that we will be paid soon.

“This is why we have decided to resume the indefinite strike that government earlier pleaded with us to suspend.”

On why the government has failed to fulfil its agreement, Yakubu Dati, the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, attributed the failure of the government to pay the arrears to paucity of funds.

“Government has tabled the five month arrears for payment, but we couldn’t do it until now because of scarce resources at our disposal.

“The issue of workers emolument is a priority to this government, but we can only do that judiciously within the resources available to us.

“So, we want to plead and we will continue to plead with the union to exercise patience and return to work because soon, we shall put this matter to rest, ” he said.

NAN reports that students were denied access into the Jos campus of the Plateau State Polytechnic as the main entrance was under lock and key.

NYSC Member Dragged To Court For Squatting In A Property

A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Lizzy Onuh, was on Tuesday dragged before a Wuse Zone 6 Chief Magistrates Court in Abuja for allegedly squatting in a property.

The corps member and her housemates, Lilian Kelechukwu and Ogbonna Ozugbemene, are standing trial on three charges of criminal conspiracy, trespass and mischief.

The trio, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Noel Omeje, told the court that one Mohammed Daggash of Prince & Princess Estate, Gaduwa, Abuja, reported the matter to the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, on August 31.

He said the complainant told the police that the defendants conspired amongst themselves, broke in and trespassed into his house located at Plot 6, House 48, Prince & Princess Estate, Gaduwa, Abuja.

The prosecutor further alleged that all efforts to eject the defendants out of the said property had proved abortive as they had continued to live there without the authorisation of the complainant for months.

Omeje said the offences contravened Sections 97, 348 and 326 of the Penal Code.

The Chief Magistrate, Ibrahim Muhammed, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N250,000 each with one surety each in like sum.

NAN reports that Muhammed adjourned the case till September 19 for hearing.

Ex-Kano Gov Shekarau Dumps PDP

A former governor of Kano state, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has finally dumped the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The media Aide to the former governor, Sule Ya’u Sule, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano on Tuesday.

Ya’u Sule, who did not give reasons for the decision, however told NAN that Shekarau had already called for a stakeholders meeting to be held today (Tuesday).

He explained that during the meeting, the former governor and the stakeholders would decide where he (Shekarau) will go.

“The former governor has left PDP and has called for a stakeholders meeting today (Tuesday) from where he will decide where to go.

“You know he will not take decision without meeting the stakeholders which has always been his habit,” Ya’u Sule said.

Mr Sule said the decision of the former governor is connected with the recent dissolution of party executives in the state.

The PDP State Executive Committee was dissolved by the National Working Committee of the party on Friday in Abuja.

Meanwhile, there are already indications Mr Shekarau will return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a party he helped form in the build up to the 2015 election.

Vector Slams MI Abaga For Hyping South African Rappers

Nigerian rapper Vector has expressed his displeasure over M.I’s controversial song, ‘You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Lives,’ saying it is disrespectful for him to say rappers in South Africa are doing better than their counterparts in Nigeria.

In the song, which was released last year, the Chocolate City president had complained that his colleagues were “underperforming”.

“None of you rappers is real enough/ once you blow up now you’re switching up/ that’s why these fans are not feeling yall/ SA rappers are killing yall,” he had rapped on the song.

Clearly displeased with the statement, Vector in a belated reaction, described Abaga’s assertion as a “super lie”.

“It’s fine, you can call rappers wack, you can call them anything but I will stand by it any day any time, don’t wash your dirty linen in public,” Vector said during a Cool FM interview.

“Nobody should come and say that is why South African rappers are killing Nigerian rappers. That is such a huge thing to say. That takes it to another level. That is a super lie.

“Whoever is saying that knows that the South African environment… for example, I am there in SA and giving them bars, and the first thing I hear is where can I buy your music whereas the general public in Nigeria is where can I download your music. There is a different culture. They have pushed hip hop to a level where the acceptance is very general.”

“What are you doing to fix up other rappers’ lives to make that a culture as it is meant to be? Are you doing because you want relevance? Are you doing it because you want to make some noise?

“No offence, I don’t know what the moves are but the only problem I have with that song is you can’t say that’s why this region is killing this region. I don’t think it should be said. I think it is very disrespectful on a very very next level.”

Buhari Refuses To Sign Electoral Bill, Gives Reasons

Buhari Refuses To Sign Electoral Bill, Gives Reasons

President Muhammadu Buhari has for the third time declined assent to the Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2018, even as he explained that he won’t sign it due to “some drafting issues” that remain unaddressed following the prior revisions to the Bill.

Ita Enang, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), made this known in a statement in Abuja on Monday.

The presidential aide said that already, the president had communicated his position to the Senate and the House of Representatives on August 30.

“Mr President is declining assent to the Electoral Amendment Bill due to some drafting issues that remain unaddressed following the prior revisions to the Bill.

“Mr President invites the Senate and House of Representatives to address these issues as quickly as possible so that he may grant assent to the Electoral Amendment Bill.’’

Mr Enang listed the outstanding issues resolved to include a cross referencing error in the proposed amendment to Section 18 of the Bill.

“The appropriate amendment is to substitute the existing sub-section (2) with the proposed subsection (1A), while the proposed sub-section (1B) is the new sub-section (2A).

‘’The proposed amendment to include a new Section 87 (14) which stipulates a specific period within which political party primaries are required to be held.

“It has the unintended consequence of leaving INEC with only nine days to collate and compile lists of candidates and political parties as well manage the primaries of 91 political parties for the various elections.”

He explained that the Electoral Amendment Bill did not amend sections 31, 34 and 85 which stipulated times for the submission of lists of candidates, publication of lists of candidates and notice of convention, congresses for nominating candidates for elections.

“For clarity, may I provide some details of the provisions referenced; Clause 87 (14) states.

“The dates for the primaries shall not be earlier than 120 days and not later than 90 days before the date of elections to the offices.

“The Electoral Act 2010 referred to herein states in Section 31: that every Political Party shall not later than 60 days before the date appointed for a general election, submit to the commission the list of candidates the party proposes to sponsor at the elections.

“Section 34: That the Commission shall at least 30 days before the day of the election publish a statement of the full names and addresses of all candidates standing nominated.

“Section 85 (1):That a Political Party shall give the Commission at least 21 days notice of any convention, congress etc., for electing members of its executive committees or nominating candidates for any of the elective offices.’’

According to him, “for the avoidance of doubt, neither the Constitution nor any written law allows a President or a Governor to whom a bill is forwarded by the legislature to edit, correct, amend or in any manner alter the provisions of any such bill to reflect appropriate intent before assenting to same.”

“He is to assent in the manner it is or to withhold assent.

Rodrigues: Terry Has Agreed To Join Sporting

Featured Image

Sporting Presidential candidate, Pedro Madeira Rodrigues says John Terry has agreed to join the club if he is elected president.

Rodrigues is one of six aspirants running for the job, and is looking to bring a new coach and new players to the club.

The aspirant has already seen two of his targets join other clubs and is keen on landing Terry.

“I’m very close to presenting players for Sporting already,” Rodrigues told Sporting TV. “If I wanted to, I could present three players today. I just won’t announce them because I can’t go beyond certain limits.

“I’m negotiating by the penny. They are foreigners. A left-back, a striker and a great champion – all players who have no contract.

“I can say one because I’ve been caught up with him. It’s John Terry, a great champion, a player who does not come to win games, but comes to win games in training. I cannot pay him what he’s used to, but I think he’s very close to being our player.

“Unfortunately we lost Marchisio, he would be Sporting’s player if I was president last week. On Monday we lost one to Olympiacos.”

Kepa Looking To Challenge De Gea For Spain No 1 Role

Featured Image

Kepa Arrizabalaga states he is looking to challenge David De Gea for the role of number 1 in the Spain squad.

The Chelsea goalkeeper only has one appearance for his country, and was called up to the squad for the world cup and the upcoming UEFA Nations League.

Although Kepa himself insists he ignores any such surveys, he is prepared to contest De Gea for the position going forward.

“Being in the squad is already a reason for joy. We all want to be here and we all want to play; I work for that,” he told AS.

“We’ll meet the coaching staff in the first few days and get ourselves going, because we have two big games ahead.

“It’s a question for the coach. What I will do is work, although obviously we all want to play.

“The coach will decide the best thing for the team, but in the training sessions I’ll try to put in the effort, for the good of the group most of all.

“All players work to compete and to play. The coach decides and we accept whatever it is, always with good harmony.

“De Gea is a great goalkeeper and the goal is perfectly covered with him. The World Cup was how it was, we came back too early, but I don’t pay attention to polls or what people say. I try to isolate myself and focus on myself.”

Messi: Madrid Is Less Strong Without Ronaldo

Featured Image

Lionel Messi believes Real Madrid are not the same force they were, following the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The pair played alongside each other in the La Liga for 9 years, and were regularly compared.

Messi is prepared to dominate the La Liga with Barcelona and accepts that Juventus are UCL favourites.

The Argentine forward told Catalunya Radio: “Real Madrid are one of the best teams in the world and they have a great squad [but] it’s evident that the absence of Ronaldo makes them less good and makes Juventus [one of the] clear favourites to win the Champions League.”

Messi added on Ronaldo’s shock departure from the Santiago Bernabeu: “It surprised me [when he left].

“I didn’t imagine him leaving Madrid or joining Juventus. There were a lot of teams that wanted him. It surprised me, but he has gone to a very good team.”

“I like the club and its ambition,” Marchisio said in a statement on the Zenit website. “When I left Juventus, I promised that I wouldn’t move to another Italian team, so I wanted to find a club which shared my values.”

Marchisio has played 55 times for Italy, but only once since 2015.

The midfielder won Serie A seven times with Juventus and joins a Zenit side looking to win the Russian Premier League for the first time since 2015.
