Illegal Detention: DSS Ordered To Pay N10.5m To Journalist Jones Abiri

The Federal High Court has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to pay the sum of N10.5 million as compensation to journalist, Jones Abiri, over his illegal detention.

The reporter was detained for two years by the security agency without trial.

Abiri was arrested by the DSS in 2016 on allegations bothering on national security, and eventually arraigned two years after, following public outrage on his prolonged detention.

At the resumed hearing on Thursday, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba stated that Abiri’s prolonged detention was an infringement on his rights.

The judge then ruled that the DSS acted outside the provisions of the law regarding the Terrorism Prevention Act, and therefore, ordered the agency to pay the sum.

According to Dimgba, as soon as the DSS took Abiri’s statement, “he should have been arraigned”.

The judge said the federal government’s submission that Mr Abiri was detained in national security was baseless.

According to him, the federal government should have filled the suit against the defendant and asked the court to refuse him bail, so that the court will use its discretion in determining whether Mr Abiri should be granted bail on not

He said specifically that there was no basis for his detention.

Man Who Climbed Mast To Protest Poor Economy Descends After 24 Hours, Blasts Buhari

The 28-year-old Nigerian man who climbed a telecommunications mast in Abuja yesterday to protest the poor economy in the country and the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari, has finally descended after 24 hours.

Man Climbs Telecom Mast To Protest Battered Economy – To Remain There For 7 Days

Nura Ilyasu,

Nura Ilyasu,

Nura Ilyasu, who was on 7-day hunger strike, upon descending from the mast at 11:25am on Thursday, September 13, said President Muhammadu Buhari did not deserve another term in office because of the “pervasive hunger and poverty” in the country.

He said, “My name is Nura Ilyasu. I am 28 years old. What I did is within the purview of the law. My human right is to protest peacefully and I never threatened my life or any other person

“What we are going through in this country is not from God. Some microscopic-view individuals hijacked all that God endowed Nigeria with for decent life, and we can’t continue like this.

“I climbed up for seven days hunger strike to protest the incompetence and cluelessness, to protest presidential impunity and general docility displayed by the masses. We can’t continue like this.

“Other competent candidates are there; even Saraki, Atiku, Kwankwaso, Tambuwal, Dankwambo and others.  At least one of these (men) will make a good President.

“I don’t believe General Buhari deserves another four-year term in Nigeria because the pervasive hunger and poverty in Nigeria is inexplicable.”

Ilyasu assured that he does not suffer from any sort of mental disorder as has been suggested to have been the cause of his protest action. He was later taken away by security officials.

Mariano Diaz has insisted that being labelled as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid only motivates him

Mariano rejoined Real Madrid for a reported €23m after spending a season at Lyon, where he scored 18 goals in Ligue 1.

Diaz came through Los Blancos’ youth system, before being sold under Zinedine Zidane,

In an interview with ‘El Partidazo’ on the radio station COPE Mariano said: “Well, many people have told me [I am brave for taking the shirt], other people have also told me bad things.

“It’s a pressure to carry that number, but others have told me that I should not have chosen it. I’ve had everything [said to me].

The one-cap Dominican Republic international revealed it was the ‘challenge’ to follow in the footsteps of club legends which motivated him to choose the number.

He continued: “It was a number that was free and to me it is a number that I like. It’s a personal challenge and I’m happy to wear the number that has been worn by many stars, like Amancio [Amaro], Juanito, [Emilio] Butragueno, Raul, and Cristiano, of course.

“Ever since I was little, I’ve seen them play and I’m happy.”

While hinting at the criticism and even anger his signing in the wake of Ronaldo’s exit has received from some fans, Mariano added that being labelled as a ‘replacement’ for the Portuguese only motivates him

He said: “It does not piss me off, it motivates me, if anything, it motivates me to be here every day.

Manchester City Announce Record Breaking Revenues in Excess of £500m

Featured Image

Premier League defending champions Manchester City have become only the second English club in history to surpass £500m in revenues.

Manchester City’s 2017/18 campaign on the pitch was a historic one for several reasons, they have also confirmed that things are good off the pitch too, with revenue breaking the £500m mark.

The club also reported a profit for the fourth season in a row, this time of £10.4m, and managed a wage-revenue ratio of 52%.

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak emphasised that the club still had a lot to do.

“Our journey is not complete and we have more targets to fulfil. We will always strive for more.” He said as quoted by BBC Sport.

This financial news means that only Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester United generate greater income than Manchester City, placing them firmly amongst Europe’s elite in financial terms.

The revenue also marks an increase of 44% over the last five years, meaning that City’s trajectory appears to be upward.

The Spain international midfielder believes his time at City is coming to an end and he will like to play for boyhood club of Las Palmas.

Silva has 345 appearances for Manchester City and was instrumental to the three PL titles they have won.

“For City, two more seasons – what’s left on my contract,” he told BBC Sport  when asked how much longer he is likely to continue playing.

“After that, I don’t know. It depends how I feel physically and mentally.

“I’ve always said that I’d like to play for Las Palmas – my local team. But we’ll see how things go in two years and take it all from there.”

De Vrij: Mbappe The Best I’ve Faced, Not Ronaldo

Featured Image

Inter Milan defender, Stefan de Vrij has rated Kylian Mbappe ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo as the better player he has faced.

Ronaldo switched to the Serie A, in a move that has improved the league, joining Juventus from Madrid.

Many see his addition as a positive towards ending Juventus UCL drought.

“I confess, at first I did not believe he was coming to Italy,” the Dutchman told  Corriere dello Sport .

“But when they [the media] kept saying it, then I started to take note. For Italian football, his arrival in Serie A was positive because it gives a great boost to the whole competition.

“I played against him with the national team in a friendly against Portugal before the 2014 World Cup. It finished 1-1 and he scored on a corner.”

When asked who the best attacker De Vrij has played against, the experienced Dutchman simply said: “That’s Mbappe.”

Silva: Guardiola Is A Football Genius

Featured Image

David Silva has described Pep Guardiola as a genius of football and says he is successful, because he predicts things before they happen.

The former Bayern manager joined City in 2016, but his first season was woeful.

Guardiola’s second season saw him win the title and break records with Manchester City.

“Pep Guardiola sees things before they happen and that’s an advantage – a massive plus,” Silva told BBC Sport.

“It’s like, he explains it to you and you grasp it straight away, something that I’d never seen before. And this goes for all areas, from the goalkeeper through to the striker.

“In the past, some of my coaches had focused more on attack, others more on defence – but he covers the whole pitch.

“I think I’ve learned to be more patient on the pitch. I used to move around a lot and wanted to be all over the place.

“Guardiola has taught me to stick to a more determined zone and wait for the ball to get to me to give us the upper hand. So, yes, I’ve improved in that sense. He’s a footballing genius.”

Loftus-Cheek: Leaving Chelsea Not An Option

Featured Image

Ruben Loftus-Cheek says the thought of leaving Chelsea has not crossed his mind, despite limited minutes under Sarri.

The midfielder was out on loan at Crystal Palace last season and impressed enough to play for England in the World Cup.

However, he has only played 33 minutes under Sarri, that has not spurred him to look for a new home.

Indeed, asked if he is thinking of a move back to Palace in January, he replied: “Possibly, but it is still far away, there are still a lot of games to play and I just have to see what happens.

“Right now, I am at Chelsea and my focus is at Chelsea and learning at Chelsea. That is in the future and we will deal with that when it comes.

“I’m not sure when I am going to play. It is just down to me working hard in training, I don’t know whether I am going to play or not play but for me it stays the same, I still train well and do everything the right way in case I do play.”

There is a busy period on the horizon for Chelsea, and during it he hopes to make his mark.

“There are a lot of games coming up so I think there will be more opportunities coming for players that are not playing every week,” he added.

“We have to be ready and do our best when we get the chance. We had a lot of talks in the past couple of weeks and Sarri said to me that I need to learn tactically so a lot of my focus and effort is learning his tactics and his ways in training.

“I think the quicker I get then the more opportunities I will get to play. He is helping me and [assistant manager] Gianfranco Zola is helping me every day to learn it as quickly as possible and that is great for me.”

Shaqiri: Liverpool Must Copy Bayern’s Mentality

Featured Image

Xherdan Shaqiri believes Liverpool is lacking the mentality to win titles, which Bayern Munich have.

Liverpool reached the final of last season’s UCL, only to lose 3-1 to Madrid, making it the third final the Reds have lost since Klopp joined.

The Reds last won a title in 2012 and Shaqiri believes they need to mirror Bayern’s mentality.

Shaqiri, who joined from relegated Stoke City in pre-season, feels Liverpool are missing the mentality Bayern have.

“Liverpool need to have the goal to play for titles,” the former Bayern winger told reporters ahead of Saturday’s clash with Tottenham. “We are a big team – big teams have to have the goal to win titles.

“It’s difficult in the Premier League, because you have a lot of big teams, so competition is there. You need to have a really, really good season to compete.

“At Bayern they only have the mentality of winning titles. Liverpool are one of the biggest teams in the world.

“Last year they had a very good year. Sadly, they didn’t win a title, but now we try to make a step forward and win honours. That’s the most important goal now. To win titles.

“We need to keep working hard. We are still a young team. Every player wants to go forward and try to be better and to help this big club to be successful.

“To be successful you need to play for titles. That has to be our aim.”

Buhari Makes Last-Minute Moves To Save Ambode From Tinubu

Reports have emerged that President Muhammadu Buhari, Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi; and Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, are on a last-minute move to save Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, from an impending loss of the state All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the 2019 governorship election.

Ambode ‘Faces Impeachment’ For Declaring For Second Term

This is as the state governor is reported to no longer be in the good books of an APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The rumours further gained currency on Tuesday when two new aspirants under the APC umbrella – Dr Obafemi Hamzat and Jide Sanwoolu, Tinubu’s favourite  – emerged to vie for the governorship ticket with Ambode in the direct party primary billed to come up in two weeks’ time.

However, The Punch quoted impeccable sources within the ruling party as saying yesterday that the prominent personalities including the President, the monarch and Ajimobi had stepped in to resolve the crisis, noting that the matter would be resolved.

“There are serious moves to end the crisis. Many people, including the President have waded in. And it is not yet too late for the issue to be resolved,” the source was quoted to have said.

“President Buhari, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and Oba Rilwan Akiolu are making efforts to ensure that the matter is resolved and Ambode’s second term bid is not terminated,” the source added.

Nigerian Guardian also confirmed that the President summoned Tinubu to Abuja yesterday over the latter’s rift with Ambode.

A reliable source from the party also told the news paper that the APC Governors’ Forum have urged Buhari to appeal to Tinubu not to disgrace one of their own.

Mane: My Parents Told Me To Drop Football

Featured Image

Liverpool star Sadio Mane has revealed his parents did not support his football dream, urging him to drop the sport as a career move.

The Senegal international has developed into a household name at Liverpool, alongside Firmino and Salah.

But Mane said his parents did not believe in his dream and told him to try as a teacher instead.

“I was born in a village where there had never been a footballer who’d made it in the major championships,” Mane told Bleacher Report .

“I remember that when I was little, my parents felt that I should study to become a teacher. They thought football was a waste of time and I’d never succeed at it.

“I always said: ‘This is the only job that will enable me to help you. And I think I have a chance to become a footballer.’

“They weren’t sure about it because I was a long way from the capital and almost nobody from there had succeeded. So they were against the idea, and they never believed it, right up until the day when I signed my first professional contract.”

The winger said his parents eventually accepted his career choice and supported his decision.

“For them, it wasn’t possible. They weren’t exactly wrong because it really wasn’t straightforward, but I wanted to realise my dream of becoming a footballer,” Mane said.

“I gave it everything. It got to the point where they didn’t really have a choice, so they started helping me, and it worked. Today, they’re all proud.”

Here’s What INEC Said On Postponement Of 2019 General Elections

Here’s What INEC Said On Postponement Of 2019 General Elections

In an attempt to douse rumors making the rounds that it is planning to postpone the 2019 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has come out to say the reports are untrue.

Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, made the clarification in a statement he issued in Abuja on Wednesday, stating that the clarification became necessary following a story with the headline, “We may shift 2019 polls over threat of violence – INEC.”

The publication, according to Oyekanmi, does not portray the correct reflection of what INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said at the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

Oyekanmi said what Yakubu told the security chiefs at the meeting was that as the 2019 general elections drew close; the committee would need to meet more frequently.

This, according to him, is to constantly assess the security situation across the country and take proactive actions to forestall any unpleasant event before, during and after the elections.

“He underscored the fact that elections cannot be conducted under a rancorous atmosphere.

“He referred to Section 26 of the Electoral Act which, among others, gives the commission the power to postpone an election if there is reason to believe that a serious breach of peace is likely to occur if the election is proceeded with on (the fixed date)”, or as a result of natural disasters or other emergencies,“ Oyekanmi.

He said Yakubu made the reference to the Electoral Act only to underscore the importance of having peace and order in place before, during and after elections.

“It is thus clear that at no point during his remarks did the INEC chairman allude to the notion that the commission “may shift 2019 polls over threat of violence” as reported by the national newspaper.

To be sure, INEC has no plan to postpone the 2019 General Elections,” Oyekanmi said.

Liverpool Demote £20m signing Lazar Markovic To The Under-23 Team

Featured Image

Lazar Markovic’s Liverpool career has reached a new low with the winger demoted to the Under-23 squad.

Lazar Markovic was a £20m signing for Liverpool from Benfica in 2014 and, at the time, was considered one of the most promising players in world football.

Markovic has made just 19 Premier League appearances in four years and has had loan spells at Fenerbahce, Sporting, Hull City and Anderlecht.

The Serbian was expected to leave in the summer but a proposed permanent move to Anderlecht failed to happen

The Belgian club’s president blamed the 24-year-old for the deal falling through, but Markovic insisted it was not about money.

With 12 months left on his Liverpool contract, Markovic is now set to walk away on a free transfer next summer.

He last played a competitive game for Liverpool in 2015

He has not been named in either Liverpool‘s Premier League or Champions League squads this season.
