Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman believes Mesut Ozil should remain a regular starter for the club even if he doesn’t play well in every game because of his quality
Mesut Ozil has been a divisive figure among fans partly because of inconsistent performances and partly due to his negative body language during games.
After being named in Arsenal’s starting XI for their first Premier League game of the season – a 2-0 loss at home to Manchester City – Ozil was taken off in the second half of the 3-2 defeat at Chelsea in match-week two.
He was subsequently omitted from Arsenal’s squad against West Ham a week later amid reports of a training-ground bust-up with Emery,
The retired German international then started against Cardiff before the international break, playing 84 minutes before being substituted off with Arsenal winning 3-2,
Seaman believes that such is Ozil’s ability to influence a game, the playmaker should remain an automatic pick for Emery regardless of performances.
“If you don’t play well then you will get singled out. That’s the way it is,” Seaman exclusively told Standard Sport when asked if Ozil is unfairly criticised.
“He doesn’t play well every game. I think a lot of fans expect him to play well every game when it’s impossible.
“He’s a quality player, there’s no doubt about that. Sometimes people think he doesn’t care, but that’s just his style. He does care – a lot.
“And he’s still got great qualities so, for me, he stays in the Arsenal team no problem.”
