Manchester United and Arsenal are both eyeing up Hertha Berlin midfielder Arne Maier. The teenager has been compared to Toni Kroos due to his passing ability in deep areas and build-up play through midfield. These attributes also have Barcelona keeping tabs on the player who could leave Berlin next year. (SportBild)

Borussia Dortmund will return for Ajax winger David Neres next year after initially showing interest in the Brazilian during the previous transfer window. The 21-year-old winger has over three years left on his deal at the Eredivisie club, but a release fee of £40m could tempt a number of sides, including Dortmund, to make a move as early as January. Juventus have dropped out of the race to sign Liverpool transfer target Nicolo Barella having failed to secure a deal in the summer. The Turin club are reported to have turned their attention elsewhere, leaving the Reds as favourites to sign the midfielder should they follow up their initial interest. The Cagliari star is considered one of the brightest young talents in Serie A, and is also interesting Inter and Roma. (Calciomercato)

The violin has stopped playing,” said Sky Italia as they reported the end of Alberto Gilardino’s playing career. The well-travelled striker won a Champions League with AC Milan in 2007, and a World Cup with Italy in 2006, and will now focus on coaching. (Sky Sport)

Bayer Leverkusen forward Leon Bailey has not ruled out a move away in the near future despite signing a new contract with the Bundesliga club this summer. An Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea transfer target, the Jamaican has also been strongly linked with Roma who want him to replace winger Malcom, who left for Barcelona this summer. (Calciomercato)

Manchester City are one of a number of clubs looking at the possibility of signing Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil star Neymar. Barcelona and Real Madrid are the other teams mentioned, and it remains to see whether more concrete interest emerges from Manchester.

Neymar joined Barcelona after Pep Guardiola had left, but the pair had met previously when Barcelona faced Santos in the 2011 World Club Cup final. Guardiola wanted to sign Neymar then and the PSG man has spoken of his desire to play under the City boss. (Don Balon)

Anderlecht’s sporting director Luc Devroe has said that he is glad the club didn’t sign Liverpool’s Lazar Markovic this summer. The two clubs had agreed a fee for a permanent deal after the Serbian spent some time on loan at Anderlecht last season, but the player turned down the contract offer from the Belgian club.

Devroe said: “Good thing we didn’t sign him in the end. No offense, but I’m glad. Look at his stats: he played a few games for Anderlecht, and that’s basically it. The fans like him, but nostalgia is not a good basis for making decisions.” (Het Nieuwsblad)

Gary Cahill Admits He Might Have To Leave Chelsea In Januarys

Featured Image

Gary Cahill admits that he will have to leave Chelsea in January unless there is a dramatic change in his circumstances between now and then.

Gary Cahill has failed to feature in any of Chelsea’s Premier League matchday squads this season, Cahill hoped that the Europa League would provide an opportunity for some long-awaited first team football.

He travelled to Greece but didn’t make it off the bench in the 1-0 win over PAOK Salonika on Thursday, proving that Maurizio Sarri does not see the 32-year-old as part of his plans.

Asked if he would have to leave Chelsea in January to play regular football, Cahill replied (quoted by the Mirror): “I don’t want to jump the gun but as things stand at this time, probably, yes.

“Whatever my future holds, in terms of the club, and the relationship I have with the club and the fans, it will have been a huge part of my footballing life. I’ve got maximum respect for everybody here.

“I realise that sometimes you have to make tough decisions and football doesn’t wait for people.”

Cahill has made over 280 appearances for Chelsea since joining from Bolton in 2012. He won the UEFA Champions League winner within five months of joining the club and has gone on to win two Premier League titles, the Europa League and the FA Cup.

“Everything gradually comes to an end or there’s a new challenge around the corner. I’ve been here for six years and won six titles,” said Cahill.

“I’m proud of my career, of what I’ve done here and what I’ve achieved in such a short space of time.”

Brighton’s Winger Anthony Knockaert Suffered Depression After Father’s Death And Marriage Break-up Last Season

Featured Image

Brighton’s Anthony Knockaert has revealed his crippling depression problems which prevented him from performing at his best for the Seagulls last season.

Knockaert was named Championship Player of the Year for his role in helping Brighton get promoted in 2016/17, despite losing his father in November 2016.

But that loss, and the end of his marriage the following year, sent the Frenchman spiralling into a serious bout of depression which cast a pall over his first season in the top flight with Brighton. He scored only three goals in 33 appearances last season.

“I went through depression last season, which people obviously didn’t know about. It was really tough and mentally impossible for me to go and perform on the pitch,” said Knockaert, speaking to Seagulls TV.

“I went through a divorce last year during pre-season, so it was really tough to take, especially after my Dad passed away. The club helped me. I saw a counsellor for a few months. Even some close relatives in my family didn’t know about it until recently, but now I’m ready to talk about it.

“I was making myself scared, thinking I was starting to become crazy – I was always in a bad mood, arguing with people, but that wasn’t my fault. I was going through a bad period and just didn’t control anything else.

“Going through depression, it just comes and you think you will never see the end. I couldn’t get out of that depression. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.”

Knockaert says that he is now ‘happy again’ and this has been reflected in his performances so far this season, with three assists to his name in Brighton’s first five matches of the campaign.

Lazio Midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic Set To Sign New Contract Extension With The Club

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is expected to sign a new contract extension with Lazio in the coming days.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic became one of Europe’s most sought-after young midfielders with his performances last season, scoring 12 goals in 35 Serie A appearances as Lazio narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Champions League.

Despite reports linking Manchester United, Spurs and Juventus with a move for the 23-year-old, he stayed in Rome and is now set to extend his contract beyond its current 2022 expiration date, according to Lazio’s sporting director Igli Tare.

“It’s just a matter of days now,” Tare told Sky Sports Italia. “All will be signed at the start of next week. The agreements have been in place for some time now.”

Lazio slapped a €100m (£89m) price tag on the Serbian, which no club is willing to pay at the moment

Lazio’s star striker and last season’s joint top scorer in Serie A Ciro Immobile is also close to agreeing a new contract at the Stadio Olimpico.

Peter Crouch Reveals How He Was Forced Out Of Tottenham By Chairman Daniel Levy

Featured Image

Peter Crouch has lifted the lid on his 2011 exit from Tottenham,

The lanky striker explained on his podcast that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy didn’t want to keep him, and the tactics that were apparently used to force his eventual move to Stoke.

Peter Crouch scored 24 goals in 93 games for the north London club, said Emmanuel Adebayor’s arrival was a big factor on Spurs decision to get rid, and things got heated between himself and Levy when discussing his future.

Speaking on his new podcast, Crouch said: “It was just off the back of playing in the Champions League. I’d done well, I was happy there, we were settled, I didn’t want to leave. I had two years left on my contract with Tottenham.

“But Daniel Levi called me and said, ‘We’re bringing Adebayor in’. He didn’t want to keep us both. We had lots of similar strikers at the club, so basically it was one or the other.

“I actually spoke to Daniel Levi personally and said, ‘Look, I’m happy here’. It got a bit nasty. It got to the stage where I’m saying, ‘Look, I’m staying. I’ll see you in the morning. I’m not going’.

“Remember, I was 30 and they wanted £16m for me and Wilson Palacios. It wasn’t cheap. But he said, ‘If you don’t go you won’t get a squad number here next season’. He was just making it difficult for me to the point where I had to leave.”

1.1Million Nigerians Currently Receiving Treatment For HIV/AIDS

1.1Million Nigerians Living With HIV/AIDS Currently Receiving Treatment

The Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Sanni Aliyu, says no fewer than 1.1million persons living with HIV/AIDS are currently on treatment in Nigeria.

He said this at a briefing to recount the activities of the Nigeria AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) on Thursday in Abeokuta.

2.7 Million Nigerian Women Engage In Abortion This Year

Mr Aliyu, who said 17,000 persons and 800 pregnant women were currently receiving treatment for HIV in Ogun, noted that only the survey could ascertain the baseline.

“What we’re not certain of is the gap that currently exists. Out of those 17, 000 on treatment, what proportion are we currently having? Is it more than a 100, 000 or less than 50, 000.

“We’re not sure of those figures; which is why we’re doing the survey.

“The survey will give us more precise estimate of the HIV prevalence in Ogun. It’ll allow us to do more effective advocacy and seek for resources that can be used judiciously.

“We’ll also be able to identify the hot-spots and target them,” he said.

He explained further that the survey which began nationally in June would last for a six month period in each zone, just as it would last four weeks in each state visited.

According to Mr Aliyu, the NAIIS is the largest single country HIV survey ever done in the world, “and just like science, if you’re sampling, the more people you sample, the more accurate you get.

“This is why we’re putting in resources to define the epidemic more clearly,” the director general said.

He said the survey in Ogun had been successful; 90 per cent of the enumerated areas had been covered in three weeks.

He, however, attributed the success to the hard work from his team, commitment from state government, community leaders and religious institutions.

“We started three weeks ago and we’ve covered 20 local government areas and 112 enumeration areas which represent 90 per cent of the total enumeration areas.

“We have just one week to finish with Ogun and move to Ondo.

“Three out of every four households we visited have accepted to be part of the survey, which made it easy for us,” Mr Aliyu said.

The NACA boss advised sexually active and non-sexual active persons alike to endeavour to know their status.

He, however, said the total results of the survey would be available by June 2019.

Earlier in an address, the Ogun commissioner for health, Babatunde Ipaye, commended the team for working tirelessly to achieve the desired goal.

Mr Ipaye, who was represented by Nofiu Aigoro, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, thanked the director-general for making the state to benefit from the survey.

He said the current administration was committed to the health of its citizenry, pledging to provide total support to the agency.

Five Manchester United Players To Miss Wolves Match

Five Manchester United players are expected to miss Saturday’s Premier League home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

While new signing Diogo Dalot is expected to be rested, Marcos Rojo and Ander Herrera are not fully fit and Nemanja Matic and Marcus Rashford are suspended.

Nigeria Moves Up In Latest FIFA World Ranking (See Top 10)

Dalot, who was signed from Porto in the closed season, impressed on his United debut in their 3-0 Champions League win over Switzerland’s Young Boys on Wednesday, but manager Jose Mourinho intends to ease the fullback into the side.

The Portuguese youngster joined United while he was still recovering from a knee injury and Mourinho intends to give him his next run out in the League Cup against Derby County on Tuesday.

“I want him in this process of adaption to play totally fresh, so he’s not playing tomorrow, he plays on Tuesday again,” Mourinho told reporters on Friday.

“To play for Manchester United is difficult enough for a kid of 19 years old coming from another country and after an important injury and surgery… he doesn’t need to face more difficulties from the accumulation of matches.”

United came through their midweek European encounter on an artificial pitch relatively unscathed and Mourinho will be able to field a strong starting XI against Wolves, who are a place and a point below his team in the standings.

“No injuries from the match, small things but nothing important,” Mourinho added. “Marcos Rojo is the one that is still not training with the team and Ander Herrera is not ready to play but is in the final phase of his recovery process.

“(Phil) Jones is okay now, so it’s Rashford and Matic with suspension, the ones that are not available.”

United have recovered well after hitting a rough patch in August when they were beaten twice in succession in the league, and have won three matches in a row in all competitions this month.

Ahmed Musa Scores Hat-Trick For New Club

Mourinho is particularly pleased by his team’s defensive improvement, which he attributes to a collective effort rather than any particular combination of players.

“I think the team as a team is resolving the defensive problems better than before,” he said. “I don’t want to say it was (Eric) Bailly or Jones and is now (Chris) Smalling or (Victor) Lindelof.

“I think the team is more compact, more solid. The spirit, the cooperation, the empathy, the communication, all of that has improved and good results bring confidence.

“I think we’re improving as a team. “I don’t want to say our improvement has the name of Chris or Victor, the team is playing better and they are part of the team that plays these matches.”

Nice Manager Patrick Vieira Defends Mario Balotelli’s Performances For Italy

Featured Image

Mario Balotelli has been defended by Nice manager Patrick Vieira following criticism of his performances for the Italian national team

Vieira gave his support for Mario Balotelli after he was criticised in the Italian media for his sub-par performance in the Azzurri’s 1-1 draw with Poland earlier this month.

“Mario was severely criticised in Italy: it’s always like that when the team doesn’t win, you need someone to blame,” he said. “I think that Mario was the perfect culprit for the Italian press.

“It’s a shame. We spoke about it together, and I know that for these kinds of things, he is strong enough mentally to deal with the situation. But they have really been unfair with him.”

Balotelli could play only his second Ligue 1 game of the season after being included in the Nice squad to face Montpellier on Saturday.

The Italian reported to preseason training two weeks late amid speculation he would join Marseille and reportedly returned weighing 100kg, raising concerns about his fitness.

Fernandinho Admits Manchester City Players Argued In The Dressing Room After Surprising Champions League Loss To Lyon

Fernandinho has revealed that “strong words” were exchanged in the Manchester City changing rooms after their Champions League defeat to Lyon.

Manchester City had been hoping to begin their UEFA Champions League campaign with three points, but they were below par as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat on Wednesday night.

Fernandinho has acknowledged that there was tension between the squad and stand-in manager Mikel Arteta after the game, but feels that can be a positive for the team going forward.

The Brazil international is quoted by The Sun as saying: “There were strong words. Not just him [Arteta] but from the players as well, but that is the best way to build a very good team. Of course, we are a good team but to compete in Europe you have to have something extra.

“I think it is a good point because we discussed it at half-time and before the game as well.”

Principal Sacks Five Students For Wearing Hijab To School In Lagos

Principal Sacks Five Students For Wearing Hijab To School In Lagos

Five students of Isolo Senior Secondary School have been reportedly suspended by their principal for putting on hijab to school in Lagos state.

PMNews reports that the Principal, Mrs. J O Sadare, had last Friday announced at the assembly ground that students should not wear hijab to school.

Prior to the announcement, some of the students wore the hijab to school and were given a letter to come with their parents on Tuesday.

The next day when the students got to the school with their parents, the principal walked them out of her office after their insistence that their daughters must put on the hijab.

It was also learnt that after being sent out of school on Wednesday, the students converted a tricycle popularly known as ‘Keke Napep’ to their classroom.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria in Lagos state have condemned the suspension of five students of the Isolo Senior Secondary School for wearing Hijab to school.

Reacting to the suspension, the Amir (President) of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria in Lagos State, Alhaji Saheed Ashafa, condemned the suspension and demanded the immediate reinstatement of the students. According to him, the ban on wearing Hijab is an infringment of their religious rigts. Ashafa said;

“The entire drama started on Friday in the school when the Principal announced to the students that no one is allowed to wear hijab in the school. Surprisingly for her, some of the students still wore the hijab to school on Monday. She gave the students letters to invite their parents to school. In the letter, she threatened that the students will not be allowed into the school without their parents.

“When she shared the letter, majority of the students fidgeted and agreed to stop wearing the hijab. She collected the letters and let go of those ones, but about five of them refused to return the letter. When we were contacted, we asked the parents to honour the Principal’s invitation.

“They went there with our (MSSN) representatives but were embarrassed by the Principal who gave them the option of either their children’s education or religion. She eventually walked them out of her office after they insisted that their daughters must put on the hijab.

“The parents subsequently proceeded to the Education District in charge of the school and they were assured that something would be done. With the hope that her (the Principal) superiors should have spoken with her to realise that what she was doing was wrong with the sub-ssisting Appeal Court judgement, the students went to school on Wednesday (today) and were still prevented from entering the school.

“These are Senior Secondary School Two and Three students who need to study hard for their examinations. When we got to the school this morning, we saw some of the students copying notes for lessons they have missed on Monday and Tuesday while the others were teaching themselves old lessons inside a tricycle on the street. This is disastrous for us. While there colleagues were in the classrooms learning, they were on the street just for being Muslims. As we speak, the assistant head girl, who is one of the students who refused to put off her hijab has been removed and replaced.”

NLC Begins Nationwide Strike On September 26

Except for any last-minute changes of plan, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared that it will commence an indefinite nationwide strike after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum given to the federal government which will elapse on September 26.

Nigerian Doctors Give Buhari Sept. 30, Deadline

NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, who made the declaration on Wednesday after a National Executive Council meeting, lamented that the federal government had failed to show seriousness in implementing the new minimum wage.

His words: “NEC noted that this is against the principle of collective bargaining as provided in ILO conventions 98 and 131 on minimum wage setting process, which Nigeria had domesticated.”

“NEC has resolved that at the expiration of the 14 days industrial action notice issued to the federal government over the new minimum wage issue, and the demand of the organised labour was not met, NEC has given NAC and the leadership of organised labour the power to declare appropriate industrial action or any action it deems necessary.”

“NEC in session accordingly approved and applauded the organised labour for taking a proactive step by issuing a statutory 14 days industrial action notice to preserve the sanctity of the collective bargaining process, and the demand for the tripartite committee to reconvene within a set period to finalise its report in line with the principle of collective bargaining.”

“NEC resolves that all its affiliates unions and the 36 state councils of Congress and the FCT and joint action front communicate the decision of NEC to their members and all workers.”

The labour leaders cautioned the federal government against foot-dragging on the new minimum wage.

Wizkid Replies His First Babymama, Shola Ogudu

Popular Nigerian singer, Ayodeji Balogun, better known as Wizkid, seems to have cryptically replied his first babymama and mother of his first child Boluwatife, Shola Ogudu, with a simple message, after she released the chats they had about their son.

Shola had in the early hours of Thursday, September 20, made available on social media the chats she had with the singer, as she continued to claim that Wizkid is a deadbeat dad, who has avoided his responsibility to his 7-year-old child.

The young lady who appears to be in her 20s also revealed that it became necessary for her to bare the private chat messages to the public just to debunk the claims that she is just after the singer’s money.

She posted screenshots of messages dating back to 2016 to defend her claims in the lengthy posts.

However, Wizkid, who appeared unmindful about all she had said, took to Twitter yesterday to write a suggestive post which we all believe is aimed at her.

“The smarter you get the less you speak,” he wrote.

On the win

We are happy because the first match here with our supporters was very important to win and also at the beginning of this competition to take the confidence and the first victory is important.

The first 60 minutes was very good, with imposing our ideas against them and winning metres on the pitch to be near their goal.

With the four goals we were in a good moment but we want to be competitive for 90 minutes and the last 20 minutes we conceded chances and we need to improve. The disappointment tonight was the two goals conceded, but I think the first 60 minutes was very good and we are going to continue progressing with that idea.

On Aubameyang’s two goals and what it will do to his confidence

Our mind today was get take confidence for our players and to give players chances to play because we are going to play a lot of matches.

It’s clear, we want to score and the players who need to score like Aubameyang, Welbeck and Ozil will take this confidence, it will be good. They did a lot of quality things in the game.

On the lack of clean sheets

We are speaking before each match about having the mentality to not concede easy chances.

Today was a good opportunity not to concede goals. But the last 20 minutes we need to do better on this competitive aspect.

On Torreira and Leno’s performances

Lucas played well. He is playing with passion in his performance, each minute he plays he does very well.

Leno it was his first match also, we conceded two goals but not from a mistake from him. For him, he got minutes in the game and he can take confidence to also because he is continuing to play matches in the next week.

On the empty seats and getting the fans to come in and watch the Europa League

We need to show our supporters we are excited for this competition.

We want to do good in this Europa League. It’s step by step and I’m sure they will come little by little here with us, burt also it is our work to bring them here.

On the two late goals

It was our disappointment today. We are conceding a few chances, it was the same in Newcastle and we need to continue to improve in this. In the last minute at Newcastle and in the last 20 minutes tonight two goals. Our challenge is to be competitive for 90 minutes, it is one thing to improve.

On Torreira possibly being injured

Torreira he got two hits on his leg. I hope tomorrow and Saturday he is good to be OK for Saturday.

“I don’t know. The problem is shoulder, but I don’t know exactly the situation. I have spoken with the doctor, but only for a few seconds. The doctor told me that probably it’s not a very serious injury.”

Controlled game, should you have won by more?

“I think we were in control of the match for 90 minutes. We have had a lot of opportunities. We missed several. So I am really very happy with the three points, very happy with the performance I think, but I am not very happy with the result. When it is time to kill the match we have to kill the match.”

Were PAOK as you expected?

“I want to think we have played very well. I expected Prijovic starting, but probably he was injured a few days ago. I think we played very well. We were in control of the match. It was difficult for everybody to play against us this evening. I hope we were so good and it’s not the fault of PAOK.”

Any of the PAOK players that caught your eye?

“I have seen five, six matches of PAOK and I think there are very good players, for example the number 10, Pelkas, I think he is a very good player. Maybe not in this match. But I have seen five, six matches of this team and they have some good players.”

Surprising you didn’t rest more players…

“I don’t know. For an English team, the Europa League is a very difficult competition. For example, in Italy, if I play in Greece on Thursday I can ask to play on Monday night. Not in England. We have to play again in 63 hours, on Sunday morning. I don’t know in the future. It’s not a big problem now. We have played only six matches. Now it’s not a problem. I hope to qualify before the last one or two games.”

“Alvaro has to gain confidence with one, two, three goals. I am not able to give him confidence. In this match he has had three, four opportunities. He was unlucky. I hope for him that in the future I can try to help him, but the confidence can become only with goals. With two goals in two matches. I don’t know.

“I have to say also, for maybe the first time in this season Alvaro was ready in the box. He was on the ball and was active.”

Contract talks between Mauro Icardi and Internazionale have stalled over the striker’s salary demands. Inter thought they had reached an agreement to pay the 25-year-old €6.5m a year, but the Argentine’s representatives are now requesting €8m. The club are keen to get Icardi tied down to a new contract and raise his €110m release clause to €130m. (Corriere della Serra)

Juventus have edged to the front of the queue to sign Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella in 2019. Barella, 21, who has been capped for Italy at every level from U15 up to U21 scored six goals in 34 Serie A matches last season and was pursued throughout the summer by Inter and Milan, although neither was able to match Calgiari’s €35m valuation. Ligue 1 side Monaco are also interested but Juve may already have a verbal agreement with Barella as the Bianconeri are the best route for him getting into the full Italy squad. (Calciomercato)

Celta Vigo midfielder Stanislav Lobotka has admitted he could leave Galicia in January to seek Champions League football. Slovakian Lobotka, 23, whose situation is being monitored by Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter, Napoli and Tottenham, has a release clause of €42m. “It’s clear all Celta players want to try and adventure with one of the bigger clubs in Europe.” (Tuttosport)

He was a Chelsea transfer target in January but Edin Dzeko also spoke with Real Madrid about a move to the Bernabeu. Both clubs were keen to bring in a new No 9 for the second half of the 2017/18 season but the Bosnia international elected to remain with Roma, who eventually reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. Atletico Madrid players are concerned about the state of the pitch at the Wanda Metropolitano following their poor start to the La Liga season. After four matches, Atleti lie ninth in the Spanish top flight after being tipped as Barcelona’s most likely title rivals. Several first-team players including Diego Costa have complained about the state of the turf at their stadium, which hosts the Champions League final in May. The grass was re-laid in July after the Wanda Metropolitano hosted Bruno Mars and Iron Maiden concerts over the summer. (Marca)

PSG sporting director Antero Henrique is under increasing pressure following the club’s lack of recruitment this summer. Coach Thomas Tuchel was known to be disappointed by the lack of signings made but chief among them was the lack of a defensive midfielder following the retirement of Thiago Motta. N’Golo Kante was linked but a transfer never materialised and after PSG’s 3-2 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League, defender Thiago Silva replied “ask Antero” as to why the Parisians didn’t have a proper No 6 at Anfield. (L’Equipe)

Injury problems are mounting up at Bayern Munich with Kingsley Coman’s return to first-team action delayed until the start of 2019. The France winger was expected to return to training in the coming days having not played for six months due to a ligament injury in his lower leg, but his recovery date has now been moved back until after the winter break. Bayern currently have just 18 fit first-team players with midfielder Corentin Tolisso and Rafinha also suffering serious injuries. (Sport Bild)

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge insists relations with defender Jerome Boateng remain positive despite the Germany international blasting the board for a lack of support. PSG came close to signing Boateng this summer but the defender has insisted he remains committed to Bayern despite a “lack of support” from Rumminegge and president Uli Hoeness. However, Rummenigge has insisted Boateng remains a key and popular player and his “door is always open” to talk. (Various)

Train Crushes Policeman, Motorcyclist To Death In Lagos

A police officer was on Wednesday morning crushed to death alongside a commercial motorcyclist by a train in Lagos state.

The police Inspector, Philip Kolo, said to be attached to the defunct Inspector-General of Police Special Tactical Squad (STS) and his motorcyclist friend were said to have died on the spot while crossing the rail line at Public Works Department (PWD) bus-stop along Agege motor road.

It was gathered that the deceased officer was in Lagos for investigation activities and was heading to the state police command from Agege for a meeting with parties to a case.

It was learnt that the wreckage of the motorcycle was seen at Shogunle, where the train dropped it.

In his narration, an eyewitness revealed that the motorcycle wheel was close to the train’s magnet and dragged the victims towards the train, adding that they were shredded.

Another witness said the train hooted from a distance and people around warned the motorcyclist to wait at a distance for it to pass before crossing, which he objected. The bag he came with from Abuja was seen at the command.

Confirming the tragedy, the Command’s spokesman, Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) said that the Police Railway Command had commenced investigation.

In his corroboration on the incident, Mr. Jerry Oche, the Lagos District Manager of Nigeria Railway Corporation, said the incident, which happened in the morning, involved an Ijoko-Apapa train at the level crossing where the motorcyclist refused to stop for the moving train.

“We have warned passersby, motorists and other road users to stay away from railway tracks. Railway track is a very dangerous place to toy with; everything involved is iron both the rail tracks and the train itself.

“I learnt that he was trying to outsmart the train before he was crushed by the moving train. It’s an unfortunate incident. We are appealing to people to learn from such incident and exercise patience at the railway level crossings across the state,” he said.

The district manager also said that the bodies of the victims had been deposited at the mortuary, while the police were working towards contacting the families.

Another Buhari’s Minister Exposed For Skipping NYSC, Could Go To Jail

Another Buhari’s Minister Exposed For Skipping NYSC, Could Go To Jail

Barely less than a week after Kemi Adeosun resigned her position as Minister of Finance due to the discovery that she forged her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate, another minister has been found culpable of not having partaken in the mandatory scheme – an offence that may see him lose his position and earn him jail term.

Premium Times, the news outlet that nailed Adeosun, reports that the Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, failed to participate in the NYSC scheme despite graduating from the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) at age 25.

It is understood that findings from the NYSC headquarters showed that the communications minister did not present himself for service after graduation and is yet to do so till date.

When contacted on Tuesday about the development, Mr. Shittu owned up that he did not serve but claimed he thought his first political post after graduation could suffice as national service, a claim lawyers and NYSC insiders consider as ludicrous and untenable.

He said he deliberatively skipped the NYSC scheme because he was convinced that his membership of the state assembly was itself a “service”.

“The constitution provides for the qualification needed for state assembly members, NYSC is not there,” Mr. Shittu said. “I didn’t need it to become a member of the state assembly, and that is already a service,” he said.

While skipping the compulsory national service is an offence under the NYSC law, punishable with up to 12 months imprisonment, some lawyers who spoke with the newspaper agreed that Shittu deliberately skipping NYSC is a criminal offence.

Abdul Mahmud, Chairman of the Public Interest Lawyers League (PILL), said the Minister is a “dodger who is in breach of the law”.

According to Mahmud, the provision of Section 12 of the NYSC Act, indicates that the Minister should have presented his certificate before he was cleared for the position.

“The provision is clear. It says (you must serve) before you get any job in the federation,” Mahmud said, noting that Shittu’s “case is worse than that of Kemi Adeosun because he deliberately refused to serve”.

“If we assume as a member of the Oyo House he (Mr Shittu) served, did it not defeat objective 4 (b) stated in Section 1 (4) (b) of the NYSC Act? Members serve in states other than their own,” he said.

Mahmud called for Shittu’s immediate arrest and prosecution, saying “all positions he has held are illegal and he should return all monies he earned from those posts to government coffers”.
