Arsenal Can challenge For Premier League Title Under Unai Emery – Arsene Wenger

Featured Image

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that the club are capable of challenging for the Premier League title under Unai Emery.

Arsene Wenger stepped down from his position as Gunners boss at the end of last season following a 22-year spell in North London.

Unai Emery has made a positive start to the job by winning 11 of his 14 games in charge.

Wenger admits that seeing Arsenal perform well makes him happy, and he hopes that his successor can mark the first season at the Emirates Stadium helm in the best way possible.

“Why not? When you look at last season at home we won 15, drew two and lost two – it’s away we were not good enough,” he told Sky Sports News. “But overall the quality’s there.

“They have a chance – but at the moment we have some other teams who look very strong as well. When Arsenal win I am happy. I felt I worked very hard and I think I left it in good shape. After that, I’m a supporter like anyone else – I want them to win football games.

“As a manager you have an influence, not only on the careers of players, the style of play and results but on the structure and impact you give to the club and overall that is very important – that the club can always continue at a very good level.”

Cristiano Ronaldo Was Not Indispensable For La Liga – Javier Tebas

La Liga president Javier Tebas has admitted that while he would have preferred Cristiano Ronaldo remained in Spain, he also claimed that Juventus player was not indispensable for the appeal of the Spanish Championship.

“It is clear that I would prefer to see him in La Liga, as I would like Mourinho or Guardiola here, but he is not indispensable, in fact, it almost does not affect us at all”, he said in an interview with the French newspaper L’Équipe.

Tebas insisted that a lot of work has been done to ensure that the Spanish top flight has not suffered too much damage in the wake of the departure of such a high calibre player.

“I can highlight the Premier League, which has not had a Champions League or Ballon D’Or winner, but as a brand is extremely strong,” he added.

Former President And Ten Players Sentenced To Prison For Age Cheating In Benin Republic

Featured Image

Prison sentences have been handed to 10 Benin youth players and the former president of the country’s Football Association for age cheating at Afcon U-17 qualifiers

A court in Cotonou found the players guilty of lying about their ages, as they were found to have failed MRI tests in Niger.

The failed tests carried out in September, saw Benin disqualified from last month’s regional qualification for the 2019 U17 Africa Cup of Nations, as they were not allowed to feature in the tournament in Niger.

The players were given 6-month sentences, with five of those being suspended. The players have been held in prison since their return from Niamey in September.

The former president of the Benin Football Federation (FBF), Moucharafou, was also found guilty of the crime due to his administrative role which lead to the failed tests.

He was handed a 12-month prison sentence, with 10 months suspended, and he has also served some time after being arrested with the players.

The national team coach Lafiou Yessoufof and two other officials have been handed similar sentences for their roles in the cheating scandal.

New FBF president Mathurin de Chacus, declared upon his August election that he was determined to”put an end to corruption, improvisation and amateurism” within the football of the country, having filed a complaint and promising ‘very heavy’ sanctions for those involved.

‘Age cheating scandal’ is nothing new to Benin as  FIFA has previously suspended the country completely in 2004 and also sent several ban threats between 2010 and 2013.

In 2016, their junior national team was embroiled in yet another scandal.

Manchester United Manager Jose Mourinho Avoids FA punishment over Abusive Language Charge

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho has been cleared of a charge of abusive language following Manchester United’s victory over Newcastle, the Football Association (FA) has confirmed.

A lip reader was used by the FA to determine what Mourinho said, reportedly a phrase in Portuguese, but they were unable to prove the charge.

However, ‘BBC Sport’ understands that Manchester United produced a strong defense for their manager and they feel vindicated by the outcome of the case.

The FA is surprised by the outcome and has not ruled out an appeal.

A statement from the association read: “A charge against Jose Mourinho for allegedly using language which was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper has been found not proven following an independent regulatory commission hearing.

“Written reasons for the decision of the independent regulatory commission will be published in due course. This decision is subject to appeal.”

Report: Antonio Conte Rules Himself Out Of Managing Real Madrid

Featured Image

Antonio Conte has reportedly ‘ruled himself out’ of contention to become the new Real Madrid manager following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui on Monday

Antonio Conte had been the early favorite to succeed Julen Lopetegui, but Madrid instead chose to appoint Santiago Solari as a short-term interim option after seemingly failing to reach an agreement with the Italian.

Now, a report from Sky Sports claims that Conte has withdrawn from the running altogether.

Sky explain that Conte, who was sacked by Chelsea in July, feels the project on offer in Madrid is ‘not right’ for him and will, therefore, extend his ongoing break from football until the summer.

Aviation Expert Believes Leicester City Owner’s Helicopter Take Off Was ‘Not Abnormal’

Featured Image

David Learmount who is an expert in the aviation industry has reviewed new footage of the aircraft taking off and believes that there was nothing wrong during the original take off.

The tragic incident took place on Saturday and resulted in the unfortunate death of Leicester City Chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha as well as three other passengers and the aircraft’s pilot.

New footage released, taken inside the stadium, shows the helicopter climbing normally for 40 seconds before it pauses and spins downwards. In a ‘BBC’ report David Learmount, an aviation expert said:

“At lift-off, you can’t see anything that’s abnormal, but it’s an awkward job climbing out of a stadium because ideally you want some forward speed as well as continuing to climb.

“The pilot climbed very nearly vertically until he was above the height of the stadium and then started to turn to the right – it was very shortly after that control was lost.

“Just after he did a maneuver that seemed to be intended, he lost control.”

Remains Of Missing Nigerian Army General Found In Abandoned Well

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday, October 31, said that it has found the body of a missing general, Idris Alkali.

Mr Alkali, who recently retired as a major general, was declared missing several weeks ago while travelling from Abuja to Bauchi.

After weeks of searching, his body parts were found in an abandoned well in Guchwet village of Shen district, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

As at the time of filing this report, the body parts found were being put in a body bag.

While there has been no medical test done to confirm if the body parts found were actually that of Mr Alkali, the Army said its investigations confirmed it so.

Speaking with newsmen at the scene, a brigadier general, Umar Ibrahim, the Garrison Commander, 3 division, said some of the suspects who participated in the killing of the general brought the army to the well.

Last week, the army announced it located a shallow grave where the late general was initially buried before the body was exhumed and taken someplace else.

A military parade will take place at the site of the well after all the body parts have been removed, Mr Ibrahim said.

Borussia Dortmund Triple Jadon Sancho’s Salary After Incredible Start To Season

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jadon Sancho tripled his wages when he signed a new deal at the club earlier this month, according to reports in the German media.

Jadon Sancho penned a new deal with Borussia Dortmund early in October, and now earns £2.7m per year, and is valued at a staggering £40milllion

According to German paper ‘Bild’, the club have invested in their talent by rewarding his early season success.  Bild wrote: ”For a player of this quality, that is still a mega-bargain. It is also thanks to Sancho that Dortmund are top of the league.’

As well as inflating his wages, Sancho has increased his market value during his time in Germany, now being valued at  £40milllion, nearly six times the figure that the club spent to sign him in the summer.

Dortmund Sporting Director Micheal Zorc recently spoke of Sancho to ‘Bild’, explaining the reasons behind the player’s extensions: “‘I’m pretty sure that Jadon will be playing for us for some time, and I have my reasons for that.”

Michel Platini Backs Raphael Varane To Win The Ballon d’Or

Featured Image

Former UEFA president Michel Platini has backed Raphael Varane to win the Ballon d’Or as he was the only player to win both the Champions League and World Cup

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have won the award five times each for the last 10 years, but their duopoly could finally be broken this year.

Luka Modric won the Best FIFA Men’s Player trophy after helping Croatia to the World Cup final, while a host of France players are likely to be in the running for the Ballon d’Or following Les Bleus’ triumph in Russia.

Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann have both been viewed as contenders but France great Platini believes Varane is the clear choice after winning the Champions League with Real Madrid prior to claiming football’s biggest prize for his country.

“It has never been easier than this year to choose who is going to win the Ballon d’Or,” former UEFA president Platini told RMC.

“It’s a Frenchman who is going to win the Ballon d’Or. I hope so. There’s only one player who has won the Champions League and the World Cup – it’s Varane. There’s always the Ronaldo-Messi debate, but this year there’s only one, one who has won all that, his name is Varane.

“He’s an excellent player. I would have voted for him, the results are the only objective thing, everything else is subjective.

“We can have opinions about Griezmann, Mbappe, [Olivier] Giroud, [Hugo] Lloris, Modric … But the only one who has won everything this year is Raphael Varane.”

Nigerian Govt, NLC Reject Governors’ N22,500 Proposal For Minimum Wage

The dispute for the right figure for Nigeria’s new minimum wage has deepened as the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Chris Ngige, disclosed that the Federal Government has rejected the N22,500 minimum wage proposal by the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF).

Nigerian Governors Agree To Pay N22,500 As Minimum Wage (READ FULL STATEMENT)

Ngige made this known on Wednesday morning during a phone interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

“The governors have not even done enough. I told them that this N22,500 is even rejected by the Federal Government,” he said.

Bear in mind that the nation’s 36 governors emerged from their meeting yesterday in Abuja and said they had agreed to N22,500 as the lowest pay cheque for workers.

Nigerian Labour Embarks On Protest Over Minimum Wage

But while the federal government is refusing to accept the amount, the country’s labour last night said that the governors’ offer was N7,500 short of its demand for N30,000, adding that it was an exercise in futility.

Nationwide Strike Looms As FG’s Meeting On New Minimum Wage Hits Brick Wall

It warned that the strike scheduled for Tuesday next week would proceed as planned.

“The N30,000 figure is not adjustable,” Mr. Denja Yakubu, Assistant Secretary (Information), at the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Headquarters, Abuja told THISDAY last night, that none of the tripartite stakeholders, including government, organised labour and organised private sector, could vary the figure he said had been agreed upon.

“We agreed to the N30,000 figure as the minimum wage at our last meeting. Sixteen of the governors were at the meeting, where the agreement was reached. Whatever they are saying now is a joke and self-deceit,” he said.

Governor Ganduje Caught In New Video Receiving Dollars

A new video has emerged on social media and currently trending where the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, can be seen in black Kaftan allegedly collecting money from a contractor.

In the new video, Mr Ganduje can be seen allegedly receiving kickback from contractors, as he spoke audibly on those who have paid and others outstanding.

In the unedited trending videos, the names of contractors, projects and the voice of the purported bribe giver can be heard.

Unlike the previous videos officially released by Daily Nigerian, the latest trending videos are suspected to have been released by other parties who could have had access to them after copies were released on request to critical stakeholders, especially security agencies and Kano State House of Assembly.

Meanwhile, the Editor-In-Chief of Daily Nigerian, Jaafar Jaafar, whose organisation released similar videos last month, has denied authorising the release of the latest video.

According to findings by PRNigeria, the journalist, who recently honoured the invitation of the Kano State House of Assembly investigating the bribery scandal, revealed that Mr Jaafar tendered several videos to the lawmakers.

“I swore an oath with the Holy Quran before tendering the several videos at the Kano State Assembly and I could not have been responsible for the current video trending on social media. Therefore Daily Nigerian did not release any other video after the appearance before lawmakers,” Mr Jaafar was quoted by PRNigeria as saying.

The acting vice chancellor of the Nigerian Army University in Biu, Borno, David Malgwi, has disclosed that the university is scheduled to begin academic activities in the 2018/2019 session.

Speaking on Tuesday at the foundation-laying ceremony on Tuesday, he said the university will begin operations with five faculties and 39 programmes.

11 Pregnant Women Among 141 Nigerians That Returned From Libya

About 141 Nigerians including 11 pregnant women have voluntarily returned from Libya to Nigeria with the assistance of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the European Union (EU).

The chief planning officer, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Segun Afolayan, confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

According to him, the Nigerians arrived at the Cargo Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos, at about 10.45 p.m. on Tuesday aboard a chartered Al-Buraq aircraft with registration number UZ189.

Mr Afolayan said that “After profiling, we have 71 female adults, three female children and three female infants.

“Also, there were 53 male adults, six male children and five male infants; among them were two medical cases and 11 pregnant women.”

He further disclosed that majority of the returnees are from Tripoli, the capital of Libya, which has become volatile in recent times.

Mr Afolayan advised the returnees to become more focused in life and not allow the unfortunate experience to negatively impact on their lives.

“Truly, you had bad experiences differently, collectively and individually but these should be the motivation for you to make positive decision to see the brighter future ahead of you.

“This is because, no one can tell the story more than you and making better use of your lives are essential.

“The federal government is urging you to be ambassadors of positive change by taking the anti-irregular migration campaign to those still aspiring to take the dangerous journey.

“You can talk to them in the language they will understand most,’’ he added.

Peter Obi Digs Osinbajo For Learning ‘Shaku Shaku’ Dance Steps

Peter Obi Digs Osinbajo For Learning ‘Shaku Shaku’ Dance Steps

The Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has aimed a dig at Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government, saying Nigeria is in a period for sober reflection and not for dancing “shaku shaku”.

Osinbajo: We Are Learning ‘Shaku Shaku’ Dance Steps For Our Campaigns

Mr Obi, the running mate to Atiku Abubakar, was reacting to the vice president’s mocking of PDP, after he said he was going to learn how to dance the popular “Shaku Shaku dance” if that was all it would take to garner votes.

Shaku Shaku is a popular and contemporary dance style common among young Nigerians

Speaking at a book launch last Sunday, Osinbajo said, “I can never forget my dear friend in one of the states, who just danced his way through the campaigns; all he did was dance; he did nothing else but dance and he won 250,000 votes.”

“So myself and Kabir are now learning Shaku Shaku; we have to learn; who knows what will win.’’

However, while addressing newsmen at the Nnamdi Azikiwe airport in Abuja upon his arrival from Dubai on Monday, Obi said the Atiku team is spending its time thinking of how to create jobs and not learning how to dance “Shaku Shaku.”

“I have not had the opportunity of reading his comments as I haven’t seen the dailies. I know Vice-President Osibanjo is a gentleman and may not have made such a comment,” Obi said.

“However, while I am not against people dancing or learning how to dance ‘shaku shaku’, as I believe it is one of those things that is keeping our people going on in this very difficult times, I believe that the crossroads that we have found ourselves in as a nation requires sober reflection.

“For me in particular, this period calls for sober reflection not dancing or learning how to dance as there are many challenges facing our nation at the moment. Not the least being recently having our country named the world headquarters of extreme poverty with over eighty seven million people. Worse still millions more are losing their jobs, with four million by the third quarter of this year alone.

“Millions of Nigerians go to bed hungry not knowing where the meal for the next day will come from, hundreds of thousands risk death by crossing the Sahara and the Mediterranean Sea to wherever they can make a living.

“These and other challenges are indicative of the dire straits facing us as a nation today. And these are what we on the Atiku team are spending our time with the best minds on how to start creating jobs and putting food on people’s table. We must get Nigeria to start working again for the good of everyone.”

The News Agency of Nigerian (NAN) reports that Daura is the country home of President Muhammadu Buhari.

When approved the proposed Federal Polytechnic, Daura, would be the first federal institution in Katsina North Senatorial District, according to promoters of the bill.

The bill, being sponsored by Ahmed Babba-Kaita, was initiated by his immediate predecessor, Mustapha Bukar, who died early this year.

Also featuring at the public hearing were bills seeking the establishment of the Federal University of Education, Aguleri, Anambra State, and the National Institute of Construction Technology and Management, Uromi, Edo State.

They are being sponsored by Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) and Clifford Ordia (Edo Central) respectively.

Others are the Federal Polytechnic, Ikom, Cross Rivers (Establishment) Bill, 2018 sponsored by John Eno (Cross Rivers Central), and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2018.

The hearing was conducted by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND chaired by Barau Jibrin (Kano-North).

Speaking at the event, President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, said the proposed laws were designed to ensure the provision of quality education in all parts of the country.

Mr Saraki, represented by the Minority Whip of the Senate, Philip Aduda, decried the fallen standards of education in Nigeria over the last two decades.

He, however, said the Senate remained committed to reversing the situation through quality legislation and oversight.

Earlier, Vice Chairman of the committee, Tijjani Kaura, congratulated and lauded promoters of the bills for their efforts in pushing them this far.

Mr Kaura, who presided on behalf of the committee chairman, said it was a demonstration of their commitment to their constituents.

He also commended the senate president for his “concern for nation’s educational system, and for ensuring the bills were subjected to public hearing in a conducive atmosphere”.

NAN reports that all the bills, except that of the NBTE Act, were endorsed by relevant stakeholders present.
