Manchester City Complete Record Signing Of 16-Year-Old Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu From Shamrock Rovers

Featured Image
Manchester City have fought off competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Tottenham to sign 16-year-old Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu from Shamrock Rovers.
Shamrock confirmed in a club statement that the transfer has been agreed and Bazunu will officially complete his move to the Etihad Stadium in January 2019.

“Shamrock Rovers F.C. can today confirm that the club has reached a pre-contract agreement with Manchester City F.C. for the transfer of goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu,” reads the statement.

“Gavin will remain with the first team squad at Shamrock Rovers and move to Manchester in 2019.

“The club has spent some time working with the player, Manchester City and Ashfield College to put in place the arrangements to allow Gavin to complete his Leaving Certificate next year.”

According to the Hoops, the undisclosed fee is the biggest earned by an Irish club “in the professional era”. The record had been held by Roy O’Donovan, who joined Sunderland from Cork City for €500,000 in 2007.

Bazunu made his debut for Shamrock in June and kept clean sheets in all of his first four league matches for the Dublin side. He also made two appearances in the Europa League against AIK of Sweden as Shamrock were narrowly beaten in the first qualifying round.

“The progress of Gavin is a result of the academy and first-team football staff working together towards the same goal of producing the right players and people for our first-team,” explained a Shamrock Rovers press release.

“We are already seeing the benefits of this strategy; it creates an additional revenue stream for the club which allows us to further invest in the club as a whole, with the ultimate goal of winning trophies at first-team level in the near future.”

The release adds: “To break the trend of young boys leaving Ireland with no education and very little in terms of a contract, this transfer is a defining moment for our club and for Irish football.

“We are very proud that our club has the vision, intent and drive to put in place support networks to develop our players in all aspects of their lives.”

Frank de Boer Jokes About Replacing Jose Mourinho At Manchester United

Featured Image
Former Crystal Palace and Inter Milan manager Frank de Boer has suggested Manchester United should offer him the Manager;s job, should Jose Mourinho be sacked.

Manchester United are currently amidst a torrid run of form, causing many to call for Mourinho to lose his job.

The Red Devils were held 0-0 by Wolves at home before suffering two defeats away to Championship side Derby County in the Carabao Cup, and then away to West Ham in the Premier League.

Manchester United’s latest result saw fans witness a bore draw at home to Valencia in the Champions League, and the pressure on Mourinho reach astronomical levels.

When asked as to who should be Mourinho’s successor by Dutch TV station Veronica, De Boer, as quoted by Sport Witness, replied: “me”. It must be said that De Boer then gave a wry smile and the audience began to laugh.

De Boer might mention himself tongue-in-cheek, but the ex-Ajax man is available following his spell at Palace. It is a shame that the 48-year-old is met with laughter when mentioned in the frame for a top job after the promising start to management he had in Holland.

Akin Alabi: Nairabet Founder Wins APC House Of Reps Ticket

Philanthropist and founder of Nairabet, Otunba Akin Alabi has won the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representative ticket for Egbeda/Ona Ara federal constituency in Oyo State.

He took to Twitter some hours ago to announce that he clinched an automatic ticket after other contenders stepped down for him.

“I have just been declared the winner of the primary election after the other contestants, Hon Jenrade, Hon Adewale Ishola and Hon Adio all stepped down for me,” he wrote. “I will be APC’s House of Reps candidate for Egbeda/Ona Ara federal constituency next year. Thank you all.”

The Nairabet chairman had in 2015 contested for the Egbeda-Ona Ara seat of the House of Representatives’ election under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, but lost.

Here’s The Full List Of Senatorial Candidates Cleared By APC NWC

Otunba Alabi had sometimes ago announced his resignation from the sports betting company to enable him to concentrate on his political ambition ahead of 2019.

He, however, noted that he will be returning to the betting company if he fails to win the primary.

“If I lose, my seat will be waiting for me at the head office. Politics is not a do or die affair,” he said.

Tottenham Won’t Win A Title With ‘Liability’ Hugo Lloris In Goal – Tony Cascarino

Featured Image

Former Chelsea stiker Tony Cascario believes that Tottenham Hotspur will not come close to winning a title with Hugo Lloris in goal as he is not ‘that good’ and a ‘liability’.

This comes after Hugo Lloris was found lacking in his team’s 4-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League.

The Frence goalkeeper left fans and teammates alike especially baffled when he came charging out of goal just 90 seconds into the game. He failed to get close to Jordi Alba on the edge of the area who was able to square a pass to Philippe Coutinho who only had a defender on the line to beat.

“He’s a great shot-stopper, he’s always had that ability, but I’ve never felt he’s been that commanding. He’s lightweight, he’s not very good with the ball at his feet and he makes rash decisions, he comes tearing out of his 18 yard box.

“I’ve never felt he’s going to be a goalkeeper that leads Tottenham close to a title. He’s a bit of a liability at times for Spurs and it’s cost them in some big games.

“He has these brainstorms in his game every now and again.”

Cascario drew comparisons with one of Tottenham’s rivals Liverpool when he said: “I look at it in the same way as the problem Liverpool had with Simon Mignolet.

“They made a massive decision to go and get Alisson, because the manager knew they had to reach another level.

“I look at Lloris and I just think there are better goalkeepers out there who could be the number one for Spurs, and I think that will be the next thing Pochettino will do.

“I’d argue that Burnley have got three goalkeepers who are every bit as good, if not better, than Hugo Lloris.”

Report: Jose Mourinho ‘Running Romelu Lukaku Into The Ground’

Featured Image

Romelu Lukaku has allegedly been left in need of a break having been overworked by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho in recent months.

Romelu Lukaku has made 61 appearances for The Red Devils since joining the club in July last year, and at least 10 more outings have been made for Belgium with the country reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup.

The 25-year-old has not scored in his last five appearances for United, and a source has told The Sun that the striker requires a rest.

Lukaku could be left out of Belgium’s friendly against Holland on October 16 and get a few extra days’ rest

Mourinho admitted last season that he found it impossible to rest Lukaku as he had no adequate replacements up front.

After Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford drew a blank at Brighton in May, Mourinho insisted “you have the answer now when you ask ‘why always Lukaku?’”

“I said that last time, where do they go? Change now and you’ll be in the same position in a year or two years quite possibly. I believe he should keep his job.”

Nike ‘Deeply Concerned’ By ‘Disturbing’ Cristiano Ronaldo Rape Claims

Featured Image

Sportswear giants NIKE has said it is “deeply concerned” by what it called the “disturbing” rape allegations facing Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo has vehemently denied claims that he attacked model Kathryn Mayorga in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009.

The statement, issued by Nike on Thursday, is the first intervention by one of the star’s major commercial partners since the bombshell allegations emerged on Saturday.

Nike signed up Ronaldo for a lifetime sponsorship deal at the end of 2016 reportedly worth £760million.

In the email tonight, the firm said: “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”

Cristiano Ronaldo has branded the allegations as “fake news”.

Earlier this week the charity Save The Children said it was “disheartened” by the claims and is “working to get more information”.

Six Soldiers Killed Today In IED Explosion

Six Soldiers Killed Today In IED Explosion

Six soldiers were killed Thursday and several others seriously injured when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) in eastern Burkina Faso in the latest attack in the jihadist-hit country, security sources said.

“On Thursday morning, a military vehicle hit a homemade explosive device between Gayeri and Foutouri. Six soldiers were killed and several others were seriously injured,” a source said.

Another source said three people were in a “critical condition” and were being evacuated to Ouagadougou, the Burkina capital.

“A cleaning up operation is under way,” the source said.

The attack came a day after a gendarme was killed and another injured in the country’s north, where three people, including an Indian and a South African national, had been kidnapped at the end of last month.

Two Nigerian Soldiers Demoted, Sentenced To 10 Years Imprisonment

In 2015, Burkina Faso, one of the world’s poorest countries, joined a string of countries in the Sahel region to come under pressure from jihadists.

Rebels began staging cross-border raids in the north of the country from neighbouring Mali.

Using classic guerrilla tactics, the rebels aim at police and the military with gun attacks and roadside bombs, target buildings and personnel perceived to represent the state, and abduct individuals.

The Rise And Fall Of Akinwunmi Ambode, By Kayode Ogundamisi

The “Baba Sope” Political Ideology and Myth of Yoruba Omoluabi Ethos

It is faulty to equate the deep loyalty Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu attracts in Lagos as exemplary of ‘Omoluabi loyalty’ or being reflective of the ethos of the entire Yoruba or South-West populace. The Ondo State electorate will argue, for example, that they “liberated” themselves from this without compromising the ‘Omoluabi’ ethos.

This piece was written by Kayode Ogundamisi. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

In the 2012 Ondo State governorship election, the current governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, as candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), was perceived as a “Tinubu imposed” candidate. He ran against the then incumbent Governor Olusegun Mimiko of the Labour Party, and the people of Ondo State rejected Akeredolu.

I recall stomping across Ondo during that election, as excited crowds in the State could not but approve, with songs and folk songs, as Mimiko invoked the tradition of the people not to take any imposition from “outsiders’.

Then throughout most of the nooks and crannies in Ondo State, the campaign was more about resisting Tinubu than being a verdict on Mimiko’s performance. Mimiko did not have to say much about his performance during his first term in office, it was almost above those of his peers, particularly in terms of education and health care. His Abiye healthcare project was celebrated even by his opponents.

In 2016 when Akeredolu was to run again, ironically against a candidate handpicked by Olusegun Mimiko, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), he presented himself as an independent candidate, his own man, and not only did he defeat Tinubu’s anointed candidate in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries, he also canvassed for votes while reminding the people of Ondo State of how they should not let outsiders chose for them. Akeredolu won against the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and today the rest is history. A number of other factors contributed to the victories in the 2012 and 2016 elections of Mimiko and Akeredolu.

Ambode As Ambode’s Achilles Heel

A lot has been written about current governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, yet the irony is that Ambode’s problem wasn’t his godfather, former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but he (Akinwunmi Ambode) was his own problem.

Power overwhelmed the governor, and he completely detached himself from the strong political party structure. A party that has been in power in Lagos since 1999 is not the kind that you ride on and ignore. You may ignore the man who brought you in from obscurity, but to survive, you need to be an exceptional performer and keep your party structure happy. Ambode did not read the handover notes of Governor Babatunde Fashola. If he had, he would not be facing the political battle of his life. The people stood with his predecessor, Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, even when the body language of his godfather was hostile, and then the mighty Tinubu knew moving against Fashola would have been political suicide for him.

The Mafioso Nature of the APC In Lagos

The Lagos APC power structure is filled with contradictions. It is sometimes progressive, at other times self-serving, but mostly it operates like the mafia in its highly close knit nature. Those who control the party at every level expect absolute loyalty, with no questions asked. It reflects most political parties in Nigeria; and even the newly formed ones are mirroring the model, which they have improved on. Six of the new Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) registered political parties have founders, who are also the party chairmen/women and also the sole presidential candidates.

The Lagos civil service is an extension of the party structure. If you come in as a governor, you are not expected to rock the boat or ‘change the template’ (apologies to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu), and it is a structure mostly servicing a few against the majority. Hardly would you find a Lagos State civil servant who is not a card-carrying member of the APC. Particularly for the Alausa based civil servants, what happens in Alausa always remain in Alausa.

The Lagos APC has political leaders who depend on state resources, as they have no other means of livelihood than politics. They know Lagos like the back of their hands and have foot soldiers beholding to them – from National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) members, to genuine party members who desire progressive change, to just about anyone who can be a yes man or woman. They are mostly reliant on a rent-seeking and collection system, and cannot just be cut off and be neglected by any governor, no matter how powerful or resourceful.

Ambode broke the first commandment: “thou shall not be unreachable”.

Yoruba and especially Lagosians do not like governors or political appointees who are perceived as ‘arrogant’ or cannot be reached, and if a governor likes, he could tar the whole of Lagos roads with gold, but the people want to be able to ‘visit’ him, and they expect to be given ‘transport fares’ on their way home. Party leaders and members expect governors to attend meetings at intervals; they don’t want to be forgotten during ‘Ileya’, ‘Christmas’ or any festive period. The street talk is that Ambode was not only unreachable to party members and leaders but he lived in his own world, while his appointees were also detached. Party members can’t even remember the name of commissioners in Ambode’s cabinet. Gone are the days when Rauf Aregbesola, Musiliu Obanikoro, Muiz Banire, Tokunbo Afikuyomi and co were ocmmissioners, and you need not see the governor to have a say in the government. Ambode ran a one man show.

For every progress Ambode made with road construction in inner city Lagos and futuristic projects such as the Murtala Muhammed Airport road and bus terminals, he undid with unpopular policies that targeted the very poor. It was as if he was in a race to undo some of Tinubu and Fashola’s projects. They say if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Ambode was busy fixing projects that didn’t need fixing – from bus stops, to the remodelling of roads, which were a waste of time and resources. BRT buses were disappearing one after the other due to neglect, and even Ambode’s newly constructed roads started developing potholes. The solutions became a problem. He did so well looking into inner city roads and improving the Lagos security architecture, with Lagos under him becoming one of the safest cities by Nigerian standards.

Ambode’s greatest sin was taking away the garbage clearing project, and thousands of poor people in Lagos – mostly party members employed as street cleaners and operators – lost their means of livelihood. Ambode handed the task of cleaning Lagos over to a relatively unknown company called the Visionscape Group, which did a terrible job of it, and the only clean effort from the company was its creation of a clean looking website, while the new face of Lagos became the dirty face of Lagos.

Ambode unleashed one punitive tax system after the other on the people of Lagos, with the most controversial one being the land use tax. When he was advised to review the State’s tax policy, he was stubborn, indifferent and ruthless, until the protest grew louder. He did not even stop at that, and he legislated his godfathers alleged tax collection firm company, Alpha Beta, as the sole collector, but when citizens screamed ‘scam’, the state’s law makers claimed that legislating Alpha Beta into a State tax collection system was an “administrative mistake.”

Of all his attempts to fix inner city roads, Ambode waged war on poor people in waterfront areas; the people of Otodo Gbame paid dearly for Ambode’s land grab schemes, with over 200 structures belonging to poor people getting razed down in 2016. The Egun and settler communities around Lekki were seen by the government and its elitist friends as constituting eyesores; and to make matters worse, the government disobeyed court orders, even when they got an injunction from the courts not to demolish these communities. Like his predecessors, Ambode mocked the Freedom of Information Act. Lagos is one of the few states where budgets are released without a breakdown.

Ambode is a product of the ‘baba sope’ collegiate contradiction and a victim of this also. Hopefully the Yoruba “progressives” will learn from the resistance mounted in Ondo, Ekiti, Kogi and the disaster of losing a senatorial seat to a dancing clown and almost losing the Osun governorship to him as a warning shot. The warning being that democracy is not a gift but a right; that leaders are servants entrusted with superintending the fair distribution of the commonwealth; that they can’t keep distributing resources to their lackeys, friends, cousins, wives, concubines, brothers at the expense of qualified members of the public.

The Tinubu Clampdown On Ambode

The assertion that Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu is behind Ambode’s travails are false. Tinubu would have been swept by the revolt from within his own political base, but he was smart enough to be led by the mass, rather than leading them. The revolt also exposes Tinubu’s vulnerability; if he had not moved against Ambode, the mass in his party structure would have moved against him. Tinubu barely yields power and influence, but he was forced to stand with the party and base, rather than stand against them. Even overtures from Abuja could not have changed that. The crises within the Lagos APC against the governor had been allowed to fester for too long. The chicken had come home to roost.

Many us have been saying it for years, both privately and in public, that the Asiwaju Tinubu political structure would have to adapt to modern democratic ethos. The collegiate “baba sope” method is plagued with contradictions and abuse, and thus repeated conflicts. It is only a matter of time before it caves to the anger and discontent of followers and the electorate. For all his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process, the legacy of Governor Tinubu will be better served if he stops getting involved in every selection process, and allows contests and processes to be free and fair. Nigeria’s democratic process can only improve if the internal party democratic process is free, transparent and fair, with party membership open and attractive to the best who may disagree with the leaders of the party. It will be a shame for all his contributions, for Governor Tinubu to leave the public with the image of the Lord of a Mafia group.

Who Are the Yoruba Progressives?

Many are sympathetic to the ideological left in Yoruba land, but really if you derobe the masquerade, it is becoming very difficult to spot the differences between the Yoruba PDP or APC.

Land and resource ownership and control in Yoruba land, particularly in Lagos, is now for the benefit of the few, and economy of YORUBA revolves within the same elite. Thus, a Governor Ayo Fayose could challenge the traditional Yoruba left and “win” in Ekiti and it took the traditional left in Yoruba land, adapting the play book of Ayo Fayose, to “win’ Ekiti back. Usually it takes invoking the spirit of Obafemi Awolowo to win elections in the South West, yet this is fast changing; the people can’t spot the deference any more, and they will rather take their chances with so called ‘akotiletas’ than stay with the so called ‘disciples of Awolowo.’

The class structure of modern day Yoruba politicians is modelled after the so-called Hausa-Fulani hegemony style that we have all been brought up to detest. Check the beneficiaries of government appointments both at the federal, state and local levels in Yorubaland, and many are family members of the Yoruba ruling elite. A very ‘progressive’ Yoruba senator who mouths JUSTICE was already a pensioner in America, when the opportunity came for the ‘progressive’ to present a name to President Buhari for the NAFDAC Chairperson, our senator did not need to search far and wide in Yorubaland for a younger qualified Yoruba. He recalled his wife, who by the way was already a pensioner also, to take the position. The office of the vice president is littered with sons and daughters of the ‘who is who’ in Yoruba land. The Lagos House of Assembly, like most Houses of Assembly in Yoruba land, is an extension of family meetings. ‘Familitocracy’ is replacing fairness, and the new generation Yoruba leaders is winning the battle of who is more nepotistic in the Nigerian federation. The politics of ‘godfatherism’ is replacing the ‘omoluabi’ ethos. ‘Omoluabi’ is just a theme to cunningly use the load of bread to wipe the soup from the plate of the commonwealth.

Yoruba Omoluabi ethos should not be the subjugation of the will of the people to the few. It is about justice for all, equality for all who live and reside in Yoruba land, irrespective of who they are, where they come from, what language they speak. We are meant to be the beacon of hope, the welcoming people who rejoice at the arrival of new settlers, the ones who vacate the most beautiful part of the household to make the guest comfortable, the tolerant ones, the ones whose strength is not in the ability to spill blood but the diplomatic prowess of stopping a war, the people who agree, but mostly agree to disagree. The ‘omo Karo o ji ire bi?’

Fairness in the distribution and allocation of Yoruba resources for all who contribute to Yoruba land should now be the priority of Yoruba leaders, it should cross party and ideological lines. Not all Yoruba progressive or conservatives have done badly, even with their faults, but a lot of bad has been done. Yes, we can still point to some progress, but that is due to the determination and can-do attitude of the Yoruba and all those who have chosen Yoruba land as home. It is never too late to stop the house from falling.

CBN Explains Reasons For Nigeria’s External Reserves’ Fall

CBN Explains Reasons For Nigeria’s External Reserves’ Fall

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has stated why the nation’s external reserves, which currently stand at $44bn, have been on a downward trend lately.

The Director, Corporate Communications at the apex bank, Mr Isaac Okorafor, who spoke on this during the CBN Day at the ongoing Abuja International Trade Fair in Abuja on Wednesday, explained that the external reserves had been going down recently because of higher yields in the United States.

He, however, assured that at the current level, the external reserves were sufficient to take care of the nation’s import bill for 17 to 20 months, much more than the three-month standard recommendation.

According to him, some foreign investors who had gone to emerging markets to take advantage of the high yields, have had to go back to the United States because of better opportunities there at the moment, adding that Nigeria’s situation was not peculiar.

His words: “The drop in our forex reserves is basically as a result of the capital flow reversals arising from rising interest rates in the United States. You will recall that the Federal Reserve has been raising rates and has even given guidance that this would continue in the near term.

“As a result of this, investments in the emerging and some frontier markets are gravitating towards the US market to reap higher returns. There is also the factor of election cycle. In Nigeria, however, we have done much better than most emerging and frontier economies.”

“Some of these countries have suffered substantial depreciation in their currencies as a result of these flow reversals. For instance, since this year, Argentina has lost 134 per cent of its currency to depreciation largely occasioned by these reversals; Brazil lost 34 per cent; Turkey, 78 per cent; Iran, 25 per cent; South Africa, 19 per cent; Russia, 18 per cent; Pakistan, 17 per cent; United Kingdom, 3.7 per cent; Japan, 1.3 per cent; whereas Nigeria has gained six per cent by way of appreciation.

“The key reason is because the CBN adopted a forex management strategy that has worked successfully, achieving a comfortable stability in the exchange rates and still maintaining an equally comfortable reserves level.”

The CBN spokesperson also listed some intervention programmes, which the apex bank had undertaken in order to propel the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises in the country.

Some of the interventions include the Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Fund; N200bn Commercial Agricultural Credit Scheme; N200bn SME Restructuring and Refinancing Facility; SMEs Credit Guarantee Scheme; N300bn Power and Airline Intervention Fund; and N220bn Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Fund.

“It is pertinent to mention here that so far, the overall impact of these interventions is the enhanced operational capacity of the SMEs that has translated into a reflation of our economy with the attendant growth and development,” Okorafor added.

BREAKING: Ronaldo To Miss Portugal’s Internationals Amid Rape Allegations

Ronaldo To Miss Portugal’s Internationals Amid Rape Allegations

Cristiano Ronaldo will not take part in Portugal’s next four internationals, the national coach Fernando Santos said on Thursday, refusing to give any reasons.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner missed the two internationals Portugal played in September. At the time, Santos suggested that the 33-year-old’s absence was temporary and intended to help the star attacker adapt after his move from Real Madrid to Juventus.

Since then accusations that Ronaldo committed rape in 2009, which the player denies, have resurfaced.

This autumn, Portugal are due to play three Nations League games, against Poland on October 17 and against Italy and Poland in November and a friendly against Scotland later this month.

Pochettino Blames Lloris For Barcelona Loss

Featured Image

Tottenham manager, Mauricio Pochettino believes their 4-2 loss to Barcelona was not down to Messi’s brilliance, but to the error made by Lloris.

The Spurs were on the back foot as early as the the 92 seconds mark, when a Lloris error led to a Coutinho opener.

However, Messi hit the upright three times before scoring a brace in the convincing win at Wembley.

While acknowledging Messi’s quality, manager Pochettino felt his goalkeeper’s error led to Tottenham’s second consecutive loss in Group B.

“If you watch football and understand it, you will know how hard is to come out of the dressing room and find yourself 1-0 down so early,” Pochettino said.

“It’s so difficult after this for the team to feel confident to play. It’s so tough. When you play at this level you can’t concede these type of chances.

“When you concede in less than two minutes, it changes completely everything. The emotion becomes tough when you are playing against Barcelona and players like Messi and [Luis] Suarez.”

“We didn’t concede one chance to Messi in the first half. In the second half, he had more space and that is difficult to stop,” added Pochettino. “If you watch the first half again, how many chances did he have? Not one. In the second half, with a lot of space, it is unbelievable how he runs.

“Come on, move on, because in the first half we concede in the first minutes. We played with the handicap of conceding after one minute.

“Our players were heroes because they were chasing the game against Messi, Suarez, Coutinho and Co. Lucas Moura could have equalised. Then you would have said ‘we are heroes and the manager is the best in the world.’”

Ancelotti Pleased With Napoli’s Win Over Liverpool

Featured Image

Carlo Ancelotti has praised his men for the manner of their victory against Premier League giants Liverpool.

Napoli were held to a goalless draw in their opening group stage game against Red Star, but have bounced back with a win.

Insigne bounced on a rebound to score the winner for Napoli in the 90th minute, to the delight of Ancelotti.

“The team did well throughout the game, we never lost control, were always very focused, above all when defending and allowed Liverpool practically nothing,” Ancelotti told Sky Italia .

“We had the chances to score earlier, but I think we timed it well. We scored at the right time… If Mertens had scored a few minutes earlier, it would’ve been more time suffering!”

Ancelotti added: “It means a lot to us to have won against the finalists from last year.

“It’s important for the confidence of the players, and these games give extra focus, but also some worries. I just told them to enjoy themselves, and it went well.

“We showed this group won’t just be hard for Napoli, but for everyone involved. After the disappointment of the first game, this is a great injection of confidence, but there’s still a long way to go in this group.”

Tuchel Lauds Neymar As One Of Europe’s Best

Featured Image

Paris Saint Germain coach Thomas Tuchel has heaped praise on his star, Neymar, following his hattrick in the UCL against Red Star.

The French giants lost their first game of the group stage to Liverpool, but made light work of their second game.

Neymar scored a hattrick before goals from Cavani, Di Maria and Mbappe completed the 6-1 riot.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Tuchel said: “Neymar is one of the best players in Europe. We have several of the best in our team – not just Neymar.

“We’ve won lots of games because we have the best players, but also because we were the best team. That’s very important.

“When you’re in good spirits, it’s easier to stay relaxed. It’s the same with Neymar. He’s confident in his form and his game – and you can see that.

“He’s very good at the moment. He’s nearly at 100 per cent of his form and physically as well.”

Chelsea Defender Antonio Rudiger Wants Forwards To Help Eden Hazard And ‘Kill Matches’

Featured Image

Chelsea center-back Antonio Rudiger has suggested that Olivier Giroud, Alvaro Morata and Willian are not doing enough to help Eden Hazard with goals this season.

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has impressed with his attacking brand of football at Chelsea and remains undefeated in the Premier League, with Hazard alone scoring six goals so far.

However, after their 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, Rudiger has suggested that the Blues’ other forwards must help out the Belgian if they are to continue their form.

“We need to learn to kill matches,” Rudiger told the Evening Standard. “It’s not only on Eden’s shoulders. We need the other players to help him with scoring.

“He has been doing his job very well again, but the other guys must score too – Giroud, Morata, Willian have to score. As a team all of us have to provide more goals, the defenders as well.

“At the end of the day the best scorers are Hazard and Pedro, but with the quality of players we have on the pitch, it’s not too good.”
