Lagos: Jimi Agbaje Emerges PDP Governorship Candidate, To Battle Sanwo-Olu In 2019

Jimi Agbaje on Friday, October 5, emerged the governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State.

The chairman of the election panel, Victor Oyofo, declared him the party’s flag bearer ahead of the governorship election next year.

It was gathered that he polled 1,100 votes to defeat his rival Adedeji Doherty who polled 742 votes in the party’s primary election.

Announcing the results at about 4.40pm, Oyofo said that the party had demonstrated democracy in action with the successful conduct of the primary.

He commended both men for the way they conducted themselves throughout the process, saying that the party was proud of them.

“I Senator Victor Kassim Oyofo, with all humility, announce the results of the PDP primary for the office of governor in Lagos State, which took place yesterday and was concluded this afternoon. “There were two contestants, One Chief Olujimi Agbaje and Chief Adedeji Oluwagbemiga Doherty.

“It was a keenly contested election, very fair. In my view, an example of what democracy should be.

“They fought a good fight, the process was open, everyone expressed their desires and the votes have counted.

“At the end of the exercise, Agbaje had a total score of 1100 votes, and the runner up, Engineer Adedeji Doherty, had a healthy 742 votes.

“By the powers conferred on me by the electoral Act and the Constitution of our party, I wish to announce and declare Mr Jimi Agbaje as winner of this contest,” he said.

Agbaje was the PDP candidate in the 2015 governorship election but lost to incumbent governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

He will face Babajide Sanwo-Olu, candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

FIFA Suspends Sierra Leone Football Association Indefinitely

The governing body of world football, FIFA, on Friday suspended Sierra Leone ‘with immediate effect’ due to government interference in the running of the country’s FA.

The ban comes after the Anti-Corruption Commission barred SLFA president Isha Johansen and general secretary Christopher Kamara from SLFA offices.

A statement issued by FIFA reads:

The Bureau of the FIFA Council decided today to suspend the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) with immediate effect due to government interference.

This decision comes after a recent letter from FIFA to the Minister of Sports of Sierra Leone to express grave concern about the removal of the SLFA President and the SLFA General Secretary and to request that both be allowed to access the SLFA premises without further delay to ensure that the operations of the SLFA, including FIFA-funded projects, are not jeopardised.

The suspension will be lifted once the SLFA and its recognised leadership (led by SLFA President, Ms Isha Johansen, and SLFA General Secretary, Mr Christopher Kamara) have confirmed to FIFA that the SLFA administration, premises, accounts and communication channels are under their control once again.

Following its suspension, the SLFA has lost all its membership rights as defined in art. 13 of the FIFA Statutes. The SLFA’s national and affiliated club teams are no longer entitled to take part in international competitions until the suspension is lifted.

This also means that neither the SLFA nor any of its members or officials may benefit from any development programmes, courses or training from FIFA or CAF. Moreover, and in accordance with art. 16 par. 3 of the FIFA Statutes, other member associations may not entertain sporting contact with the SLFA during its suspension.

Herdsmen Massacre 25 Persons In Fresh Plateau Attacks

About 25 persons have been feared dead after gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen launched an attack on Ariri community in Miango town, Bassa and Barkin Ladi council areas of Plateau state.

Nineteen persons were massacred in Bassa while the rest lost their lives in Barkin Ladi.

An eyewitness, Yohana Yakubu, from Ariri village in Miango District, told newsmen on Thursday in Jos, that the assailants displaced many families, after shooting sporadically at their targets.

He said, “In all, 19 people were killed. The killers wore black clothes; they were shouting Allah Akbar. They were speaking Hausa and Fulani languages and after the attack, they fled. People were massacred and we are now helpless. The killing is barbaric. We don’t know our offences which provoked the killings.”

The spokesperson for the Miango Youths Development Association, Lawrence Zongo, also confirmed the attacks.

He said, “Again, Fulani gunmen have killed 18 people in Ariri village of Miango District in Bassa LGA of Plateau State. Four persons sustained serious injuries including the youth leader of Ariri, who are now receiving treatments at the Enos Hospital, Miango.

“The Fulani people have declared war on the Plateau. They are achieving their plans through genocidal attacks and killing of citizens. We are always in security meetings without results. No investigation to arrest the criminals. Now Ariri village has been displaced.

“We are calling on the Amnesty International, the global community and Red Cross to please come to our aid. We need your help and assistance. We are losing hope in the government.”

At Barkin Ladi, same scenario played out about the same time, as the victims, who were resting after the day’s work, were slaughtered in their sleep.

Some of the survivors accused security operatives of staying aloof.

Speaking on the killings, the spokesperson for Plateau State Police Command, Matthias Tyopev, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the Commissioner of Police, Undie Adie, had condemned the attacks when he visited the scene.

The CP said investigation had commenced and promised to track down the perpetrators of the crime.

CNN Uncovers Paris Park Where Nigerian Women Are Forced Into Prostitution

CNN Uncovers Paris Park Where Nigerian Women Are Forced Into Prostitution

A new report published by popular US news-based channel CNN has uncovered how some women trafficked from Nigeria are forced into prostitution in a park in Paris, capital city of France.

This is coming at a time when stories have continued to inundate the internet of women deceived into giving up their money for a “better life” in Europe but later forced into prostitution.

In the recent discovery, the Bois de Vincennes, a park on the outskirts of eastern Paris, is popular with joggers and boules players during the day but a business spot for Nigerian sex workers when darkness descends.

Nadège (not real name), one of the trafficked women, who managed to escape, told CNN how a female Nigerian pimp, “Madam” she met in Lagos promised her a job as a waitress in Europe.

“I was told it was like a paradise but getting here, it was like from frying pan to fire,” Negede said.

Nadège, 20, was trafficked from Nigeria to France and forced into sexual slavery at €20 ($23).

She and other girls would later have to pay off a huge debt of €50,000 ($57,690) and sometimes more, to Madam.

According to Nadège, before leaving Nigeria, the victims were made to take an oath at a “juju” temple never to speak about their deal with madam nor the debts they owe her.

She said they were made to lie in a coffin while taking the oath, with a threat of death (return to the coffin) if they broke the rules.

Nagede said she travelled from Nigeria to France with a fake passport her madam gave her. She was sent to work in the Bois a week after she arrived.

Her madam gave her a €100 daily target and took away her passport and all her earnings, except money for food and rent.

“Sometimes you work from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the morning, maybe get home by 8 a.m.,” she said.

She would start work again, elsewhere, from 3 pm. “Until 6 p.m., then you have to go to your normal place of work.”

Nagede said she cut ties with her madam when she got pregnant a year later and decided to keep her baby.

Tribunal Warns INEC Against Tampering With Osun Gov Poll Results

The Osun State governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Osogbo, on Thursday, granted an ex parte order to Senator Ademola Adeleke, restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from altering results of the recently conducted election in the state.

The tribunal headed by Justice T .A. Igoche and  Justice B. A Obayi as member also ordered INEC not to tamper with  information contained in the card reader machines and other documents used for the poll.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adeleke, through his counsel, Mr. Nathaniel Oke, SAN, had filed an ex parte application seeking leave of the tribunal to file the application before the pre -hearing session.

The applicant also sought leave of the tribunal to inspect and obtain certified true copies of electoral documents and materials in the custody of INEC.

Adeleke predicated his application on the grounds that he was the candidate that contested the election held on September 22, 2018 and the re-run election held on September 27, 2018 on the platform of PDP. Other grounds of the application are:

“That the total votes won by the 1st applicant on the 22nd day of September, 2018 was 245 ,698 while the 1st respondent scored 245 ,345.”

“That the 1st applicant was the winner of the election and ought to have been so declared by the 3rd respondent ( INEC). That the 3rd respondent declared the election inconclusive hence a rerun was conducted on the 27th day of September 2018.

”That the rerun election was marred by electoral violence, vote-buying, stuffing of ballot papers, multiple thumb-printing and voting and allocation of votes by the 3rd respondent. That by the total actual and valid votes cast on the 22nd and 27th days of September 2018 respectively, the elections were won by the applicants.

“That an examination of the electoral documents and election materials in the custody of the 3rd respondent is required to determine the actual facts and records of the elections to maintain this petition.

“That the 3rd respondent wrongfully declared and returned the 1st respondent as being duly elected and winner of the governorship election, Osun State held on 22nd day of September 2018 and the rerun election held on 27th day of September 2018 respectively.

Naira Abusers In Trouble As CBN Moves To Introduce Mobile Court

Naira Abusers In Trouble As CBN Moves To Introduce Mobile Court

Those who are fond of abusing the naira notes – by squeezing, hawking, spraying or trampling on it during parties or events – will certainly not like this as the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) Bankers Committee is mulling about setting up mobile courts to punish violators of the country’s currency.

TECNO Mobile Launches CAMON ICLICK2 (See Details)

The Bankers’ Committee made this known during press briefing shortly after their meeting on Thursday in Lagos.

The advanced move, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Ministry of Justice, is aimed at reducing the huge costs incurred yearly from minting and replacement of bad notes.

The bankers said they also resolved at the meeting that the discretionary bank reserves built up over time should be channelled towards agriculture and the manufacturing sectors in an impactful manner.

Here’s Why Tecno Mobile Is Dominating The Mobile Industry In Nigeria

By this, they explained that local food sufficiency would be enhanced and pressure on the country’s foreign reserves would be reduced.

Speaking further on the currency abuse, the Director, Corporate Communications Department, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Isaac Okorafor, said that anyone found squeezing, hawking, spraying or trampling on naira notes at any ceremony would be arrested and tried at the mobile courts.

He stated, “We realised that it costs a lot of money to print the Nigerian naira notes; we also realised that the CBN Act, 2007 forbids any action by anybody either by spraying or squeezing or trampling upon it, writing on it, or hawking it.

“That Act makes it punishable by six months’ imprisonment, or the offender pays a fine of N50,000 or both. And so, it is not only hawking it, but also if at a party, somebody dances upon the money or sprays it, that person automatically goes to jail from that reception. So, Nigerians should bear that in mind and we are serious about it.”

According to him, the CBN is collaborating with relevant agencies of government, Ministry of Justice, the judiciary and the Nigeria Police Force on enforcement.

“It is the duty of the law enforcement agencies to catch offenders and take them to court, and we have been collaborating with the Nigeria Police Force on this mobile court, and that collaboration will be intensified,” he added.

Mats Hummels’ position at Bayern Munich could be under threat, with a move away potentially on the cards if the situation is not reversed. Under former coach, Jupp Heynckes, the centre-back was a fixture in the German champions’ defence, however, since Nico Kovac has taken the reins at the Bavarian club, his rotation policy has seen Hummels on the bench. The player is beginning to think he will become the most prominent victim of the change of coach, particularly as he is being regularly criticised for his attacking forays. (Sport Bild)

France

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, Adrien Rabiot, has turned down a third offer from the French club, as the transfer saga involving the Frenchman rumbles on. PSG president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, has proposed a new salary of €9m (£7.9m) per year, up from the previous offer of €7m (£6.2) but that still isn’t enough to persuade Rabiot to put pen to paper. (Le Sport 10)

Andoni Zubizarreta has talked about Marseille’s failed summer bid for Mario Balotelli. “We did everything for him to come, he was willing to play in Marseille,” he said. (L’Equipe)

Unai Emery’s Post-match Press Conference After Arsenal’s Impreesive Win Over Qarabag

Featured Image

Arsenal got their second successive victory in this season’s Europa League courtesy of a 3-0 win over Azerbaijan side Qarabag.

Sokratis PapastathopoulosEmile Smith-Rowe and Matteo Guendouzi all scored their first-ever goals for Arsenal as they eased to the three points in Azerbaijan on Thursday evening. Unai Emery commented on his players performance after the game

On the win and performance

Each match for us is not easy.

First, because when we are playing away we are playing against a good team like Qarabag today with good players and with great ambition and who are excited to play against us.

The first half we suffered, but I want to suffer and to not find easy matches. Then in our moment to show you and them our possibility, our quality. I think today, in the 90 minutes the team worked very well.

On Smith Rowe and what he said to him after he came off

Every player needs to feel that they have the option and chances to play with us, above all the players coming from the academy.

Today they are here. Iliev, Willock, Nketiah and on the pitch Emile Smith Rowe. We want to give them, but also for them to earn their moments on the pitch.

In pre-season for example Smith Rowe worked very well with us and he knows how we play. He is very humble and wants to continue improving and progressing with us in training and in matches like today.

I said to him after that before he had one action and with ambition he can go inside the box and score more.

On what qualities really stand out with Smith Rowe

The quality he has physically and mentally. He also has quality in his right foot, with working in attacking moments with combinations with another player.

But if I say one condition, I say his mentality. He is humble, he listens every day in training, in video analysis and before every match for continuing improving and continuing to take one step more, like today.

The last match he played against Brentford he had three actions in the opposition box and didn’t score, today he had two and scored one. I think this is one step more for him.

But I prefer to not to speak a lot about him, because I think it is better for him to continue to stay humble and to keep his feet on the ground.

On Qarabag – surprised by them?

We saw different matches, in their domestic competition and also in Europe against Sporting Lisbon and the best performance was against Sporting Lisbon.

It was a good match and our respect is more. Here for example, Atletico Madrid didn’t win and they played very well in the Champions League.

That is reason we had respect for them and on the pitch we needed the best performance to win today.

On why he took Monreal off

I changed Monreal because we wanted the second half to play a back four and also to put on the pitch one midfielder more.

On Aubameyang – fit for Sunday?

Aubameyang and Aaron are in London and we will look to see how they are to see if they can play Sunday.

On Iwobi on whether he has to start now on Sunday?

For us each match is very important for players to show us and for them to take responsibility and to take confidence. I am very happy how the players are responding on the pitch. Iwobi and the other players the same.

Then, when the match arrives on Sunday in Fulham, for us it is very important. We are going to find and decide the best first XI to continue this way against a very good team like Fulham.

Maurizio Sarri’s Post-match Press Conference After Chelsea’s Hard-fought Victory Vs Videoton

Featured Image

Chelsea have battled to a 1-0 win over Hungarian champions Videoton at Stamford Bridge thanks to a 70th-minute strike from Alvaro Morata.

Alvaro Morata rescued his side by netting just his second goal of the season, and his first in seven games, to break down the visitors’ resolute defence. Here’s every word from Chelsea’s boss Maurizo Sarri after the game

A hard match…

“Yes. It has been very hard. In the first half we had opportunities for scoring. We didn’t do it and so the second half has been very hard. I think it was an important three points. We have created a lot of goal opportunities but we have conceded two, three opportunities to the opponents and I think we have to do better in the defensive phase, in the positions under the line of the ball, to avoid the counter attacks of the opponents. We have to do better I think.”

Pleased for Alvaro Morata?

“Really very happy for him. It’s very important for him to score. I think it’s very important for him to play a very good match. He played a very good match. It’s very important for him to play for the mates, for the team, like this evening. I think Alvaro can restart from this performance.”

It seemed he had a bit of rough treatment, do you think he did?

“I don’t know. I don’t want to talk about the opponents. They played their match. I think Alvaro has to think only about our match, only about the result, only about the mates and not about the opponents. It’s not important.”

Will this goal and being recalled by Spain give him confidence?

“I hope so. But, as I said before, he has to restart again, from the performance. He played very well, better than in the last period and so we can restart with this performance. He has to be confident for the performance. Sometimes you can score, sometimes not, but the performance is important.”

Of course, for us he’s a very important player. At the moment we have Alvaro and Giroud, but we have to play every three days for a long time, I think, I hope, and so he’s a very important player for us, for our season. Both, Alvaro and Olivier.”

Were the missed chances frustrating?

“I was not happy, but I think it can happen. I was worried about the fact that we have conceded three goal opportunities to the opponents, for our mistakes. I am not worried if we don’t score for 45 minutes.”

Morata seemed emotional after his goal…

“I don’t know, but if after a goal he wants to cry, I hope to see him cry very often.”

Ruben Loftus-Cheek played over an hour, has he done enough to play on Sunday?

“I have to see tomorrow the recovery of the player. He has played for the first team from the beginning, he has played for the first time for 65, 70 minutes. I want to see tomorrow the recovery of the player.”

Worried about the Thursday/Sunday matches?

“This match we have changed eight players. In Greece I think only five, maybe, five or six. I hope we can do better than West Ham.”

Were you surprised by how stubborn MOL Vidi were?

“They are very organised for the defensive phase. They defended very low, but well. I was surprised because they were dangerous in the counter-attacks. I was surprised about it, not about the defensive phase.”

Ross Barkley got called up to the England squad…

“I’m very happy for him. He had a very serious injury last season. Now he’s recovering very well. He’s improving match by match, week by week. I’m really very happy with him. I think he can have a very important future in this club and in the national team.”

Diego Maradona Wants To Be Vice-President Of Argentina in Next Year’s Election

Featured Image

Argenytine football legend Diego Maradona has spoken of his interest in entering the world of politics in his home country, even offering to be the vice-presidential candidate to former leader Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.

Maradona, speaking to Clarin, criticised the current Argentine government led Mauricio Macri and revealed that deceased Cuban leader Fidel Castro urged him to enter the world of politics.

He said: “I would go on the ticket with her. Fidel [Castro] told me that I had to dedicate myself to politics. And I would go with her, with Cristina.

“I see people suffer, I see people who can not make ends meet. How much more will they [the current government] steal? They are chasing us, Macri put all his friends in power. They will not get the money in the drawer.

“It’s something that fills me with grief. My sisters can not make ends meet. But they fight it, they work. And well, it gives me a lot of anger. Seeing a country that was stable and suddenly collapsed everything like someone pulling down a snowman.”

Despite his offer, a ticket of Kirchner-Maradona in 2019 seems incredibly unlikely. While Kirchner has been tipped to run again, she is also facing corruption charges in Argentina, while Maradona is currently the manager of Dorados de Sinaloa in Mexico’s second tier
