NIS: Nigerian Passport To Carry 10-Year Validity As From December

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has disclosed that the issuance of Nigerian passport with 10-year validity will commence in December 2018.

The Comptroller-General of the NIS, Mr. Mohammed Babandede, made this known when he visited Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Monday in Ibadan.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the immigration boss and some senior officers were in Ibadan for the first International Conference on Border In-Transition at the University of Ibadan.

He explained that the new passport would have features that could stand the test of time, adding that it would run concurrently with the old ones.

“We thank President Muhammadu Buhari for approving the new passport with 10-year validity.

“We have also repositioned and improved on our services as directed by the President,” he said.

Babandede said NIS had also improved accessibility to visa through the introduction of Visa-on-Arrival for immigrants whose country was without an embassy.

“We have initiated the centralization of Temporary Work Permit for immigrants who are in the country for a temporary assignment as well as made it easy for women to do change of name across the states.

“We have also introduced forward-front-border patrol to curtail activities of smugglers and criminals within the border areas.

“We will continue to ensure adequate security of the border and country at large,” he said.

He said that the president had directed that NIS officers should patronize the bushes unlike the street patrol system which operated before his administration.

Exam Malpractice: Police Ordered To Produce Adeleke In Court On Oct 31

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday, October 15, fixed October 31 for the arraignment of the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in the September 22, 2018 election in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, and four others, on charges of examination malpractices.

During a brief hearing, the judge, Justice I.E Ekwo, directed the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to ensure all the five defendants were brought to court for arraignment on October 31 after the trial was stalled due to Adeleke’s absence.

“The prosecution is ordered to ensure the defendants are in court at the next date, to take their plea,” the judge ruled.

The IG, through the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Simon Lough, had on September 19, 2018 filed four counts of examination malpractices against Adeleke and his four co-accused.

The prosecutor, Lough, informed the judge on Monday that the matter marked, FHC/ABJ/CR/156/2018, was coming up for the first time on Monday.

The prosecution accused the five defendants of committing examination malpractices by fraudulently, through personation, registering Adeleke and another Sikiru Adeleke, as students of Ojo-Aro Community Grammar School, in Ojo-Aro in Osun State, for the National Examination Council’s June/July 2017 Senior School Certificate Examination in February 2017.

Charged by the police alongside  Adeleke were, Sikiru Adeleke; the principal of Ojo-Aro Community Grammar School, Alhaji Aregbesola Muftau; the registrar of the school, Gbadamosi Ojo; and a teacher in the school, Dare Samuel Olutope.

While the four other defendants were present in court on Monday, Adeleke was absent.

Under-pressure Germany Coach Joachim Loew Insists He Can Handle The Criticism

Featured Image

Germany boss Joachim Loew seemed to have regained his poise as he faced the media Monday ahead of a match against France, just two days after being on the receiving end of a humiliating defeat to Netherlands

“I can handle criticism very well,” Loew said at a press conference ahead of Tuesday’s Nations League game against the world champions at the Stade de France.

After Germany lost 3-0 to the Netherlands on Saturday, Loew had seemed irritated and flustered as he refused to answer questions from German media about his future.

That loss left Germany bottom of their Nations League group, fuelling questions about whether he should have retained his job after the humiliating early exit from the World Cup.

“Of course, the defeat in the Netherlands has done a lot of damage, to the staff, the players and most of all the fans,” Loew said on Monday.

“It’s not really surprising to me. After the World Cup, it is a process we have to manage. There will be setbacks or defeats. I am not too surprised about that.

“It’s normal for me to be criticised, but I can handle criticism very well. I’ve spoken with the president (of the federation), it’s clear that we have to stick together.

“Criticism from the outside does not bother me. It is important that I motivate my players against France. I can easily forget the criticism and remain 100 percent focused.”

Defeat on Tuesday would leave Germany on the verge of relegation to the B division of the Nations League. It would also be a sixth in 2018, a German record in a calendar year.

“We have nothing to lose against the world champions,” Loew said. “We are here to take the three points.”

“We want to play boldly against the world champions. As for the players, of course, if you suffer a 3-0 defeat, you have to make changes. One thing I can tell you is that Neuer will be in goal… “

AC Milan Announce Record Financial Loss of €126m for 2017/18 Season

Featured Image

AC Milan’s financial struggles have continued to worsen, with Forbes reporting that the Italian giants announced losses of €126m for the year of 2017/18.

This latest figure is a big rise on 2016/17’s €73m. And, over the last five years, the Serie A side have recorded a total of €460m in losses.

Things had appeared brighter when the club posted their half-year accounts earlier this year, with a six-month loss of €22.3m, lower than their €39.5m for the similar period 12 months prior. But many changes have taken place since these figures were posted.

Yonghong Li’s new Rossoneri Sport Investment company took over from long-time owner Silvio Berlusconi in 2016.

However, the Asian businessman was unable to fund the venture in its entirety and sought assistance from Elliot Management, an American-based hedge fund, to get things over the line.

Milan’s loan repayment, which matures this October, has left the club in a regrettable position. Li was unable to even make it to October and Elliot Management took control during the summer after his defaulting on the loan.

The new owners have made a host of changes in the backroom and new finance has been introduced ahead of what should be a more stable period for the club.

Arsenal’s Ivan Gazidis is expected to take over as Milan’s chief executive in the coming weeks, while the likes of Paolo Maldini and Leonardo – both former Rossoneri players – have been brought in to oversee player recruitment.

Alberto Moreno Likely To Leave Liverpool For Free Next Year

Featured Image

Alberto Moreno could be set to leave Liverpool for free at the end of the season, according to reports

Alberto Moreno’s contract with Liverpool expires in the summer of 2019 and there has so far been no attempt to extend his four-year stay at the club

According to a report from Goal, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp is an admirer of 18-year-old Lewis and sees him taking a similar journey into the Liverpool first team as that of 20-year-old Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Moreno, meanwhile, has seen his game-time at Anfield decline each season due to noticeably poor performances for his side at left-back, and the resulting arrival of Andrew Robertson last season didn’t make things better for the Spaniard.

Last week, the Spaniard emerged as a shock rumoured target for Barcelona, and the La Liga giants could be amongst a host of clubs interested in the flying full-back on a free transfer next summer

Moreno, who will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs at the start of 2019, moved to Liverpool from Sevilla in 2014, and has made over 130 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions.

Ajax Rules Out Selling Matthijs de Ligt During The January Transfer Window

Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars has insisted that there is ‘no chance’ of Matthijs de Ligt leaving the club during the January transfer window.

De Ligt, 19, is regarded as one out of the outstanding young central defenders in world football, and has been linked with a number of clubs over the last couple of years.

Barcelona and Manchester City have been strongly linked with a move for the 10-time Netherlands international, and the player recently talked-up a future switch to Camp Nou.

Overmars, however, has ruled out the possibility of De Ligt leaving Ajax at the start of 2019.

“The chances of De Ligt leaving Ajax in January are 0%,” Overmars told LaRoma24.

Asked whether the defender could be sold in June, Overmars replied: “Yes, I confirm it is a possibility.”

De Ligt signed a four-year contract extension last year, with the deal lasting through 2021.

Doctors Reveal Why You Should Stop Using Urine, Breast Milk To Treat “Apollo”

Doctors Warn Nigerians Against Using Urine, Breast Milt To Treat “Apollo”

The Nigerian Optometric Association on Monday warned the general public against the use of urine, breast milk, and acid, among other unconventional stuff, when infected with conjunctivitis, popularly known as ‘apollo.’

President of the association, Dr. Ozy Okonokhua, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday.

Okonokhua frowned at such practices, saying it is harmful to the eyes.

He, however, urged the populace to seek help from trained and licensed professional optometrists when infected with any eye problem.

“Apollo is a virus that is self-limiting, which means it cannot be cured with local medicine or self-medication.

“It is a viral infection enhanced by dryness more common during the dry season and the bacteria infection, which is secondary, is best treated with antibiotics,” he said.

Okonokhua further advised the populace to imbibe the habit of regular hand washing to avoid contracting viral and bacterial infection of the eye.

NAN reports that ‘conjunctivitis’ in medical parlance or ‘apollo’ in local parlance is inflammation of the conjunctiva, a thin, filmy membrane that covers the white portion of the eyes.

Conjunctiva, which produces mucous to coat and lubricate the surface of the eye, contains fine blood vessels that can be seen on close inspection.

Similarly, Dr Njong Onugu, Head of Eye care Unit, Public Health Department of Health and Human Service Secretariat, FCTA, identified apollo as a common eye problem that affects people of all age and has no cure.

Onugu said that healthcare workers have high risk of exposure to viruses that could cause viral conjunctivitis.

The eye care specialist, however, urged the public to maintain proper hygiene by washing their hands thoroughly before and after applying eye drops on infected persons.

She identified some causes of irritation of the eye layer to include allergies in the environment which could be due to air pollution, smoke, pollen from trees and grass.

According to her, when the conjunctiva becomes irritated or inflamed, the blood vessels which supply it enlarge and become more prominent, causing the eye to turn red.

“Symptoms include pinkness or redness in the eye, inflamed inner eyelids, blurred vision, sandy or scratchy feeling in the eye, pus, mucous or watery discharge from the eye.

“You must avoid sharing of towels, cosmetics or eye-drops with others that are affected as this can predispose you to it.

“Infected children should be distanced from schools, camps and swimming pools until they are cured,” Onugu advised.

Nigeria To Sell Ajaokuta, Others To Fund 2018 Budget

The Nigerian Government is willing to offer more of its assets for sale soon, under the ongoing privatisation programme aimed at raising more money to implement the country’s 2018 deficit-based budget.

This disclosure was made by the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, while briefing the Nigerian delegation at the end of the International Monetary Fund/World Bank Group meetings in Bali, Indonesia on Sunday, October 14.

The CBN governor also affirmed that more assets are in the offing.

“I am aware, as a member of the National Council on Privatisation, that more are coming and I believe in due course that the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) will make this available for us. I am aware of the situation of Ajaokuta Steel Company of Nigeria. It is also on the cart, first for a total review of the process of privatisation and payment, so that our aluminum sector can eventually come alive,” he said.

Not long ago, the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Limited Plc was offloaded, with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which already has a majority stake, emerging the preferred buyer, given the company’s security status.

Guardiola: Modric Switching To Inter Is Pure Fantasy

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola believes talk of Luka Modric joining Inter Milan is nothing but pure fantasy.

The FIFA Best Player of the year was linked with a move to the Serie A side in the off season, but a move never materialized.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, Modric has once again been linked with a possible switch.

Asked about the possible switch, Manchester City manager Guardiola said any such talk at this stage was pure imagination.

“There is, what’s it called, fantasy football,” he said on Sunday.

“When you speak about a player leaving for next year, the market is closed now.”

Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio has also recently dismissed the possibility of Modric arriving in January , describing a transfer as “impossible”.

The Serie A side are set to be active when the window reopens in January but Ausilio said Modric will not be among the players the club look to bring in.

“We already have a strong squad. Now we are scouting, we are watching a lot of matches and we did well,” Ausilio told Sky Italia.

“I’m convinced that after having viewed these players we can be ready to add what is needed.

“Modric is impossible in January, but we know where to look. The most important thing for the next window will be quality.”
