How Oshiomhole’s Panel Trekked From Abuja To Abeokuta – Paul Oreniyi

And yesterday the bird of night did sit,
Even at noon-day, upon the market-place,
Hooting and shrieking. When these prodigies
Do so conjointly meet, let not men say
“These are their reasons; they are natural.”
For I believe they are portentous things
Unto the climate that they point upon.”
“Indeed, it is a strange disposed time,”
to further quote the inimitable.
– William Shakespeare.

It had all the trappings of a Hollywood movie, save that it is a tragic, if not macabre one. Viewed from a related angle, features of a palace coup are also visible, enacted fully or piecemeal – “here”, and to be fully enacted “there” if Abuja is found remiss in the rapidly unfolding events of the ruling party.

This piece was written by Paul Oreniyi. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

For the taciturn army general turned politician at the helm of affairs of the APC-led government, the augurers are still out there plucking the entrails of an offering. Will they find a heart or not as the clock ticks towards February 2019?

For the clairvoyant, this is not totally about the tall-cap politician at the Governor’s Office in Abeokuta. Heads or tails, he has played his allotted part, creditably and will leave on May 29, 2019 with his shoulders high. He has set a standard below which residents of Ogun will not permit any governor to fall.

One question is likely to impress itself on any keen observer of the recent political happenings in the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with regards to the governorship primary of the party: Is Nigeria sliding back to Thomas Hobbes’ state of nature, the state of self-preservation, of ‘war of all against all.’ The English philosopher, in The Leviathan, posits that man is inherently savage and brutal. He is moved to action not by his reason or intellect, but by his appetites, desires and passions. Under this condition, according to Hobbes, law and justice are absent. The life of man is “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short!”

On Saturday, September 29, 2018 – a period when expectations were high and party members upbeat following the successful presidential primary of APC on September 28, 2018 – the APC Governorship Primary Election Committee for Ogun State, headed by Mr. Muhammad Indabawa and Senator Gbenga Aluko (the Secretary) reportedly disappeared from the radar. Rather than arrive from Abuja on Saturday, September 29 for the primary slated for Sunday or early morning of Sunday (a worse case scenario), the committee members literally disappeared into thin air with no one able to trace their whereabouts!

Excuses galore! All the airlines in Abuja were on strike! Workers in the Nigerian Railway had suddenly downed tools! All the vehicles in the Nigerian capital, both private and public, all at once vanished, a prelude to the Armageddon or end of the world! The only option left for members of the APC Governorship Primary Election Committee for Ogun State was to trek from Abuja to Abeokuta in order to supervise the conduct of the primary! Sure they must arrive Ogun State weary, drenched, bedraggled, famished and too languid to conduct any election.

Indeed, they did not conduct any election. Three days after they were originally billed for Abeokuta, they allegedly went to a hotel in Lagos to carry out the bidding of their paymaster(s): Return Dapo Abiodun AT ALL COSTS as the Ogun APC candidate for the 2019 general elections. But they were poor actors. At least they could have pretended to organize a semblance of an election and then post their pre-determined results. Even this path of least resistance was too much for them to take. They just sat in their hotel rooms and allocated figures to the aspirants. Sounds surreal, a fiery tale, even the popular governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, lost his local council to Dapo Abiodun!!! The frontline candidate, Adekunle Akinlade was also declared to have lost at home!!! Haba! What a poor script! Poor actors indeed!

Because the Abiodun group knew they could not win any election under any free and fair circumstance in Ogun, they allegedly colluded with the Muhammad Indabawa-led panel to write phony results in distant Lagos.

Unlike the purported election (which held on paper), said to be organised by the Muhammad Indabawa committee, the Tuesday October 2, 2018 election, where Hon. Adekunle Akinlade defeated all the contestants including Abiodun, was observed by INEC, and the presence of the police was visible everywhere and widely reported in the press. There are pieces of video evidence of the authentic election in all the 236 wards. The results truly reflected the strength of each of the participants across the state. Akinlade polled 190,987 votes, Mr. Jimi Lawal got 5,046 votes, Abiodun obtained 3,648 votes; Mr Bimbo Ashiru polled 898 votes, Sen. Gbenga Kaka got 833 votes; and Mr. Abayomi Hunye polled 208 votes.

Of course, the Muhammad Indabawa-led panel gave Ogun people a short end of the stick when they met the six aspirants on Monday, October 1, 2018 and announced that the election would hold the next day, on account of which schools were closed to ensure a hitch-free poll. The public did not know they had hidden agenda. But once results of the exercise arrived and it became so evident that Abiodun could not win on the electoral field, the committee went incommunicado and disappeared from the state. But then the child had already been delivered, hale and hearty and like in Lagos, the results had to be announced.

The shocking silence of some prominent leaders of the party like Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Chief Segun Osoba, Governors Ajimobi and Aregbesola is too loud to be ignored. Or are they working behind-the-scenes with Amosun to redress the injustice? I dare say, silence in this case is never golden. The daylight election robbery foisted on Ogun by the Indabawa committee and the National Working Committee must not be allowed to stand. If they support the primary that produced Sanwo-Olu in Lagos, integrity demands they should support the even more convincing one in Ogun that produced Akinlade. There should be no case of double standard?

2023 is far, yet it is part of the calculation of the political class. Indeed, it is alleged that 2023 is at the heart of the needless crises that have engulfed APC in at least nine states of the federation, leading to rumours and speculations of mass defection in those states.

Is it over for APC as the ruling party in Ogun since the overwhelming majority of party men cast their votes for Hon Akinlade? Will justice prevail? Will President Buhari act now in the interest of justice and fairness, as cast iron evidence points to the fact that there was no election that produced Abiodun as the candidate of APC?

Will the Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC) return the stolen mandate to the rightful owner, Akinlade, before it is too late? Is this the last pointer to the alleged hidden plan to pull the rug from under the feet of Buhari ahead of the February 2019 presidential polls? These are troubling times indeed!

One can only hope it is not Buhari that is being led to the slaughter-slab by the APC undertaker and his backers. We watched a close scenario in 2011. Amosun has virtually finished his term in office. He has nothing to lose. So the present struggle cannot be said to be about Amosun. But injustice somewhere is injustice everywhere. Therefore, because of our shared humanity, all men of conscience should rise to join Amosun in the struggle to restore justice to the victim, Hon Akinlade, who overwhelmingly won the APC Ogun governorship primary election. Silence at this period cannot be golden.

Outrage On Twitter As Buhari Fails To Provide WAEC Certificate To INEC

Some very notable Nigerians on social media have begun to express their displeasure after President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has again, failed to provide his academic credentials to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as one of the requirements to qualify to contest elective positions in the country.

2019: Buhari Fails To Submit Academic Credentials To INEC

360nobs earlier reported that President Buhari, who is seeking a re-election in office, had told INEC that all his academic credentials, including his West African Examination Council, WAEC, are with the military.

He attached an affidavit to support his claim.

“I am the above named person and the deponent of this affidavit herein. All my academic qualification documents as filled in my Presidential form, APC/001/2015 are currently with the Secretary of the Military Board as of the time of this affidavit,” the affidavit reads.

This is just as INEC has published 79 political parties who will be fielding candidates for the 2019 election.

Bear in mind that In 2014, the president had also tendered the same submission in the build up of the 2015 elections.

But the military had denied being in possession of the academic credentials.

Meanwhile, Nigerians have begun to throw flakes at the president.

Mourinho Speaks On Ibrahimovic’s Chances Of Returning To Man United

Manchester United gaffer Jose Mourinho has ruled out any chance for a return to Old Trafford for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

It is believed that the 37-year-old, who moved to LA Galaxy in March after a period at United, would be available for a temporary loan period during Major League Soccer’s off-season but the Portuguese insisted United would not be making a move.

Metro UK reports that when asked if a United return was a possibility, Mourinho said: “No”.

Asked if it was not an option he would consider, the Portuguese again replied: “No.”

Ibrahimovic would act as good cover for the Red Devils’ main striker Romelu Lukaku – who has not scored in his last eight matches and Mourinho has admitted he is short of options and is unable to rest the Belgian.

In the same vein, the striker has also distanced himself from a move back to United as he wants to properly recover after his first stint in Major League Soccer.

“I think I’m in a situation where I need to have a good balance between work and rest,” Ibrahimovic told Sky Sports.

“Because I came back from injury and because of my age and the load I’m putting in during training.

“It’s not what I have been thinking about because we still have two games, hopefully we make the play-offs.

“Any more on that I don’t know what to say because I haven’t focused on that, I haven’t put any thought on it.”

Benue Lecturer Remanded In Prison For Allegedly Raping 13-Year-old Housemaid To Death

A Senior lecturer in the Department of Catering and Hotel Management, Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, Mr. Andrew Ogbuja, was on Thursday, October 25, arraigned for a fresh charge at the Chief Magistrate Court in Makurdi, for criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

The 51-year-old lecturer was subsequently remanded him in prison for the alleged rape of his 13-year-old housemaid, Elizabeth Ochanya Ogbaje.

It was gathered that Ogbuja, who committed the alleged crime with his son Victor, was arrested by the police, arraigned and remanded in prison, while his son fled.

The rape victim died of Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) and other health complications after being allegedly abused by the duo on several occasions.

During court session, the Old Students Association of Federal Government College, Gboko, Benue State and other civil society oganisations in the country yesterday protested against the death of Ogbaje.

The protesters demanded justice and proper prosecution of the suspects at Unity Fountain, Abuja.

Before her death last week Wednesday at Benue State Teaching Hospital, the victim was a Junior Secondary School 1 student at the Federal Government College, Gboko, Benue.

It was gathered that the girl, a cousin of the lecturer’s wife, was allegedly sexually abused by the suspects for about five years, while she lived with them.

Speaking with newsmen, one of the protesters, Esther Arabare, said: “We are only calling for justice for late Ochanya. This is a disgrace to the general public, especially women.”

Kaduna Reinforces Curfew As Kidnapped Traditional Ruler Dies

The Kaduna State government on Friday, October 26, confirmed the killing of the kidnapped monarch of Atom Adara, ethnic group in Kajuru local government area of the state, Maiwada Galadima.

The Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Samuel Aruwan, who described the killing of the monarch as inhuman, in a statement, said Galadima died in captivity in the wee hours of Friday.

Galadima’s body was found close to a bush along the Kaduna-Abuja Highway in Kateri in the early hours of Friday, according to the statement.

Following his death, the state government has reinstated the 24-hour curfew in Kaduna and its environs.

Galadima was abducted on October 19 alongside his wife, while his driver and four others were killed.

Although his wife was released, Galadima was killed after his abductors allegedly collected ransom.

Meanwhile, the curfew, which was initially imposed on Sunday, was relaxed by el-Rufai following recorded security improvement in some parts of the state.

However, the statement read: “The Kaduna State Government has reinstated a 24-hour curfew on Kaduna metropolis and environs, Kasuwan Magani, Kajuru, Kateri and Kachia. The curfew is effective from 11am today, Friday, 26th October 2018 and will remain in force until further notice.”

“This is a necessary step to help maintain peace as we mourn the death of HRH Agom Adara, who we lost in the early hours of today to the criminals who abducted him last week.

“The Kaduna State Government calls for calm in all our communities. The criminal elements who perpetrated this crime should not be allowed to divide us.

“This is a struggle between good, decent, law-abiding people trying to uphold the peace and criminals who want to divide and destroy. It is not a struggle between religious or ethnic groups. Let no criminal find succour in faith or tribe.

“Let us unite against every criminal activity. Let us stand together as human beings who have a right to live in peace.”

Presidency Reveals N30,000 As Minimum Wage For Nigerian Workers Not Possible

The Presidency has revealed that the proposed N30,000 as minimum wage for civil servants is not feasible.

The country’s labour unions, who had previously demanded N50,000 minimum wage, and later said N30,000 was agreed upon during the negotiation, are not happy at government’s stance on a new minimum wage for workers.

NLC Tells Nigerians To Stock Up On Food As It Vows To Shutdown Nigeria On Nov 6

Last Sunday, the unions declared that they will commence a nationwide, indefinite strike from November 6 if the government does not meet their demands on minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

The organised labour has rejected the proposal of the federal government to raise the minimum wage from N18,000 to N24,000.

But while on a Channels TV programme, Politics Today, aired on Thursday, the spokesperson to President Muhammadu Buhari, Femi Adeshina, disclosed that some governors were unable to pay the N18,000, not to talk of N30,000.

“So if they can’t pay N18,000 and labour is asking for N30,000 and they refuse to come lower, there may be a stalemate which will not be good for the country.

“I think in the spirit of negotiation, labour should not insist on N30,000,” he said.

Mr Adesina was asked that if the political class, “particularly members of the All Progressives Congress (APC)”, agree to reduce their salary, will the states be able to pay the N30,000 minimum wage?

He replied; “I doubt”.

“Even if they decide not to collect anything, it still doesn’t take care of N30,000 minimum wage. It doesn’t.

“Maybe if the members of the national assembly concede part of their salaries and allowances, it can make a dent on minimum wage. But other office holder’s don’t earn anything outrageous.”

2019: Buhari Fails To Submit Academic Credentials To INEC

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has failed to submit his academic credentials to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of his bid to seek re-election in 2019, insisting that they were in the custody of the military.

INEC yesterday published names of 70 out of 91 political parties fielding candidates for presidential elections in 2019, including Mr Buhari.

Buhari Was Right: Nigerian Youths Are Lazy

The commission is expected to publish a full list of candidates of political parties today, October 26.

But a list of candidates, which was made available to newsmen on Thursday, showed that Mr Buhari failed to attach necessary documents as requirement for his re-election bid.

Instead, he insisted the documents are in custody of the military, The Punch reports.

He attached an affidavit to support his claim.

“I am the above named person and the deponent of this affidavit herein. All my academic qualification documents as filled in my Presidential form, APC/001/2015 are currently with the Secretary of the Military Board as of the time of this affidavit,” the affidavit reads.

Meanwhile, the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku submitted relevant documents, with a Diploma in Law in 1969 from the Ahmadu Bello University being his highest qualification.

The former Vice-President also attached tax returns indicating that he had paid N10.8m in tax from 2015 to 2017 while declaring his income within the period as N60.2m.

Gunmen Kidnap 5 NYSC Corps Members Traveling To Orientation Camps

Some unknown gunmen on Wednesday, October 24, kidnapped five members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who were travelling to their orientation camps in Akwa Ibom and Rivers states.

Aside from the five corps members, two other passengers on the bus conveying the corps members were also kidnapped.

It was gathered that the fresh graduates and the other victims were travelling from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to Rivers and Akwa Ibom states where they were billed to undertake their three-week NYSC orientation.

NYSC Shifts Registration Deadline To Oct 27

They were kidnapped on the Owerri-Port Harcourt Expressway and taken to the Umuapu forest in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.

Speaking with newsmen after the victims were rescued by the police, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Imo State Police Command, Dasuki Galadanchi, said the kidnappers established contact with the families of the corps members and demanded N5m ransom.

The CP gave the names of the corps members as Abiola Temitope, Olubisi Adekanmi, Jose Temitayo, Folarin Opeyemi and Shonibare Ademola.

NYSC: Borno Begs Corps Members Not To Redeploy From State

Other victims were identified as Leonard Uzondu and Raymond Ojodahe.

The CP said, “The victims were travelling from Ibadan to Port Harcourt. Five out of the seven of them are prospective corps members. They were on their way to the NYSC orientation camps in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states for the three weeks camping.

“They were kidnapped around 5am on Wednesday at Umuapu, on the Owerri-Port-Harcourt Expressway. The kidnappers took them to a forest and dispossessed them of all their belongings, including money, phones, ATM cards and voter cards.

“They compelled them to call their relatives at home to speak to them. Immediately contact was established, they instilled fear in the parents and demanded N5m for their freedom.”

The CP explained that through intelligence gathering, the operatives of the Counter Terrorism Unit of the command were alerted.

He said, “The operatives went into the bush and on sighting the officers, the kidnappers abandoned their victims and fled. We rescued them unhurt, but the hoodlums made away with their valuables.

“This is part of the dividends of community policing. I urge Imo State residents to keep sharing information with the police. We cannot do it alone.”

Galadanchi said he had ordered investigation into the incident with a view to arresting the fleeing suspects.

Juventus President Andrea Agnelli Stands By Cristiano Ronaldo Amid Rape Accusation

Featured Image

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli says he will support Cristiano Ronaldo as the forward faces a rape allegation.

Kathryn Mayorga has accused Cristiano Ronaldo of sexually assaulting her in a hotel in Las Vegas in 2009, something the Portuguese has strenuously refuted.

German publication Der Spiegel first reported the claims, which also included the suggestion Ronaldo paid Ms Mayorga $375,000 in 2010 as part of a privacy agreement, preventing her from going public with the allegations.

Ms Mayorga filed a lawsuit in an attempt to quash that agreement while Las Vegas police have re-opened an investigation.

Ronaldo’s lawyer Peter Christiansen confirmed the payment was made to Ms Mayorga, but said some documents presented as evidence had been “stolen” and “completely fabricated”.

In a statement released earlier this month, Ronaldo described rape as an “abominable crime” and Agnelli confirmed at a news conference on Thursday he will back the player

“When there are problems I tend to look people in the eyes, ask them the questions directly and them judge them myself,” Agnelli said at a news conference.

“I’m very calm, having spoken to him directly as soon as the case emerged, on his position. And his behaviour in the days and weeks that followed only confirm my initial feeling.

“It’s a personal case, but I spoke to him with [vice chairman] Pavel [Nedved] and [sporting director] Fabio [Paratici] and I told Cristiano that my door and the door of Juventus will always be open whenever he would need something.

“We are here to support him and the same goes for every woman and man at Juventus, when they need it and when we are convinced that they behaved correctly.”

Ronaldo addressed the allegation when he appeared at a news conference ahead of his return to former club Manchester United for a Champions League fixture this week.

“I am a happy man,” he told reporters. “We did the statement two weeks ago, if I’m not wrong.I am glad, of course, I’m not going to lie in this situation, I’m very happy.

“My lawyers, they are confident and of course I am, too.  The most important thing is I enjoy the football, I enjoy my life.

“The rest, I have people who take care of my life. Of course, the truth is always coming in the first position. So, I’m good.”

Gennaro Gattuso Not Focused On Saving His AC Milan Job Despite Poor Start To Season

AC Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso hit out at any suggestions he was focused on trying to save his job

AC Milan slumped to a 2-1 loss at home to Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday, further increasing the pressure on Gattuso.

Milan are second in Group F, but they have struggled in the league, winning just three of eight games to be 12th in the table.

Gattuso, who took charge in November last year, hit out at any suggestions he was focused on surviving as coach.

“Do you think in this moment I am thinking about saving my a***? I’m not worried about my job or about how to save my a***,” he told a news conference.

“I’m only focused on how to sort the problems of my team, if the club will give me the chance to continue here.

“As I already said after the performance, as the manager I have many things to be worried about and that need to be fixed.

“I have a difficult job ahead of me and I feel responsible for our bad performance.”

Milan’s next outing sees them host fifth-placed Sampdoria in the Serie A on Sunday.

How would you describe Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s performance tonight?

“He played very, very well. In the offensive phase wonderful. I told him at the beginning of the season I thought he was really a very good player. Now I think the same, but now he’s now more suitable to my football. He’s improving. He needs to improve in the defensive phase, but it’s not only Loftus. At the moment we have four midfielders for two positions, three of them with the same charecteristics. Only Kante is a defensive midfielder. It’s very difficult for me to put in the starting XI two so offensive midfielders at the same time. I hope to be able to do it in the future. I need the cooperation of the players of course. I need an improvement in the defensive phase.”

Has he given you more of a problem now because of the performance?

“I like very much this type of problem.”

There’s an impatience amongst England fans to see Loftus-Cheek succeed, can you understand why people want to see him?

“He’s a very good player. I have a little problem as I have to put 11 players in the starting XI and I have 28 players. It’s a little problem and I don’t know how to solve it. As I said before, I have a tactical problem with the midfielders. We need to work and they have to improve in the defensive phase. In the future I may be able to put Barkley and Loftus in the same starting XI.”

Do you have sympathy for him as he’s been with Chelsea since he was eight and he’s still played very few games?

“I know that the fans love him, of course. He was in the academy so that’s normal. My problem remains the same. It’s very difficult to solve the tactical problem without an improvement in the defensive phase with these three midfielders. We can try and we will work, but I need the cooperation of the players.”
