Leicester City Confirm Chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Was Among Five People Who Died in Helicopter Crash

Leicester City have confirmed club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was among five people killed in a helicopter crash on Saturday night.

The 60-year-old Thai businessman was on board his own personal helicopter, which lost control and crashed in a car park at the King Power Stadium following Saturday’s match against West Ham.

A Leicester club statement read: “It is with the deepest regret and a collective broken heart that we confirm our chairman, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, was among those to have tragically lost their lives on Saturday evening when a helicopter carrying him and four other people crashed outside King Power Stadium.

“None of the five people on board survived.

“The primary thoughts of everyone at the club are with the Srivaddhanaprabha family and the families of all those on-board at this time of unspeakable loss.

“In Khun Vichai, the world has lost a great man.

“A man of kindness, of generosity and a man whose life was defined by the love he devoted to his family and those he so successfully led. Leicester City was a family under his leadership.

“It is as a family that we will grieve his passing and maintain the pursuit of a vision for the club that is now his legacy.”

Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha founded the retail company King Power Duty Free, bought Leicester in August 2010 and became the club’s chairman less than six months later.

Under his ownership, Leicester secured promotion to the top-flight in 2014 and won the 2015/16 Premier League title.

Jose Mourinho Compares Romelu Lukaku Goal Drought ‘To ‘Shaking A Bottle Of Ketchup’

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho has compared striker Romelu Lukaku’s goal drought to shaking a bottle of ketchup

The Belgian international is prone to enduring long barren spells in front of goal, followed by ruthless streaks, averaging his goals per game ratio to an impressive 0.45 in the Premier League.

Such patterns in the Belgian’s prowess has led to current manager Jose Mourinho to compare the forward’s form to the feeling of ‘shaking a bottle of ketchup’.

In an interview with ‘Sky Sports’ ahead of United’s home clash with Everton on Sunday, Mourinho exclaimed: “I think one of the best scorers in football had funny words about it. It was when Cristiano Ronaldo was speaking about the ketchup bottle and when you [shake it]. The goals are coming and coming and coming.”

Mourinho explained his analogy by saying: “I believe with Lukaku that this will happen, but the reality is that at this moment it’s not happening. There’s been lots of matches in which he’s not scored a goal, and not just scoring but also the performances, the happiness in the performances, I think is the problem. But he’s a good player, a good boy, and I think the best way to do it is to just keep working and the moment will arrive.”

Nigerian Army To Start Producing Combat Vehicles In 2025

The Chief Of Army Staff (COAS), Tukur Buratai, has disclosed that the Nigerian army will begin the production of combat vehicles in 2025.

The COAS made this known on Saturday, October 27, at the 77 Regular Recruits Intake Passing-Out Parade at the Nigerian Army Depot in Zaria, Kaduna state.

According to Buratai, through research, the depot had already produced five patrol vehicles named ‘TYB’.

The army chief said: “Let me at this juncture commend the Commandant, Depot, Nigerian Army and his team for the uncommon research and development feat which led to the production of five patrol vehicles, named TYB Robile in my honour.

“By this breakthrough, the Nigerian Army is poised to become self-reliant in class `B’ combat vehicles by the year 2025.

“Furthermore, the ultra-modern industry military range which I will commission today is one of the cottage technological training aids designed to improve recruits marksmanship skills and economise use of old classes of army ammunition for training.

“I, therefore, urge the Depot Nigerian Army to maximise its use to enhance the quality of young soldiers trained in the Nigerian Army.”

He said the collaborative training with the British Advisory Team (BAT) had further introduced the recruits to contemporary training method.

“It is highly gratifying to note that this highly revered institution established in 1924 has remained focused in the discharge of its primary responsibilities of transforming able-bodied young Nigerians from civil orientation to well-trained soldiers,” Buratai said.

“This is to meet the manpower requirements of the Nigerian Army.

“Depot Nigerian Army has over the years remained pivotal in sustaining the growth and development of the Nigerian Army toward fulfilling its constitutional mandate of defending the territorial integrity of our great country, Nigeria.”

Fans In Shock After Leicester City Helicopter Crash On Saturday Night

Featured Image

Fans laid flowers outside Leicester City’s King Power Stadium on Sunday, a day after a helicopter belonging to the club’s Thai owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha crashed outside the grounds.

“I was really upset, I can’t get to sleep over it,” Kanti Patel, a Leicester City fan, told AFP as emergency workers pored over the crash site.

There was no confirmation whether 60-year-old billionaire Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who frequently flies to and from Leicester’s home games by helicopter, was on board the aircraft.

But many in the city in central England and in Vichai’s homeland already feared the worst for the man they credit with the club’s against-all-odds Premier League title victory in 2016.

“It means a lot to me, he did a lot for the club. To be honest I don’t know what to say but I can’t get over it. Since him being with the club the club has done well, and I don’t know what’s going to happen now,” Patel said.

Another fan, Tom Lievers, arrived with a “Champions” scarf to pay tribute to Vichai.

“Well you know where we were when he bought the club — we were absolutely nowhere. So I brought down my ‘Champions’ scarf because he made us champions.”

Andrew Aldwinckle said: “He was more like he was a supporter, a proper supporter, rather than a money man. He was one of the crowd. As far as we’re concerned, that’s it.”

Steve Walton, who wore the club’s blue hat, said: “I think there’s a lot of Leicester fans around the world — not just in Leicester, but around the world — who I think will be devastated and he meant a lot to the fans.”

Vichai also brought Thailand greater recognition in the international sporting world, developing the Southeast Asian country’s football scene.

At a football game in central Bangkok, Leicester City fan Apichart Jitratkavee said: “He is an important person who has raised the bar of Thai football further. There were projects by Leicester City to select Thai teenagers to train in the club’s academy. They will have a chance to serve the nation in the future.”

Foreigners To Pay $4,000 For Overstaying As Nigeria Imposes New Sanctions

The Federal Government of Nigeria is on the verge to impose new fines on foreigners who overstay their work or visitor visas as part of new measures geared at stemming the breach of the country’s immigration laws by foreigners.

The fines ranges from $200 to $4,000 and is dependent on the number of days a foreigner is deemed to have over- stayed his visa in Nigeria.

The sanction, however, would not apply to citizens of Economy Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as the Nigerian government under the ECOWAS free trade treaty permits free movements of citizens of member states with valid passports – without entry visas into the country.

Immigration sources told newsmen that a new document signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, indicated that a non-ECOWAS visitor who intended to stay in Nigeria for 56 days, but ended up staying beyond 90 days would be sanctioned with a fine of $200 or the naira equivalent.

“For a non-EWCOWAS visitor who applied to stay in Nigeria for 90 days, but ended up exceeding his visa by 180 days, the person would be sanctioned with a fine in the sum of $1, 000 or its naira equivalent,” the source added.

“Besides, any non-ECOWAS visitor who intended to stay in Nigeria for a period exceeding 180 days, but not beyond 365 days aggregate in the would pay to the government the sum of $2, 000 or its equivalent.

“Also, any non-ECOWAS visitor who overstayed in the country without authorisation or regularisation would, in addition pay a penalty equivalent of $4, 000.”

The source said: “The Federal Government had to introduce this new regime in order to checkmate foreigners who abuse visas granted them by the government.

“It was discovered that some of them intentionally overstay in Nigeria without regularising their papers. The government will do everything humanly possible to stop such abuse.”

“However, in order to prevent corruption or leakage in the system, the government gave out the concession to a firm that will work with officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service at various points for the remittance of the sanction fee.

“What the concessionaire does is that it issues them a sanction ticket, which the visitor pays to a particular bank. So far, the regime is free of any corrupt practices and our men at various stations are cooperating with the officials.”

NRC Suspends Abuja-Kaduna Train Service Due To Ongoing Violence

The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced that it has suspended the Abuja-Kaduna train service over the ongoing crisis in Kaduna state.

The NRC managing director, Fidet Okhiria, informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, October 27, that the service was suspended because of the safety of the passengers, goods, coaches and wagons.

According to him, the suspension which took effect on Friday remains so till the security situation in Kaduna improves.

“We decided to stop the train services yesterday (Friday) because of the curfew and the crisis situation in Kaduna, passengers cannot go in and out of Kaduna and for the safety of the passengers and our vehicles we decided to stop the services,” he was quoted as saying.

“We will resume normal operations when the situation in Kaduna state improves and the curfew is lifted.”

The Kaduna state government had imposed a curfew on Kaduna city and environs due to violent clashes recorded last week at Kasuwan Magani in Kajuru local government area of the state.

Nigerian Labour Unions Begin Nationwide Mobilisation For Strike On Oct 31

Nigerian Labour Unions Begin Nationwide Mobilisation For Strike On Oct 31

The premier labour unions in Nigeria – Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) – will on October 31, begin a nationwide mobilisation in preparation for the strike which is set for November 6, 2018.

NLC Tells Nigerians To Stock Up On Food As It Vows To Shutdown Nigeria On Nov 6

The Punch quoted the President of the TUC, Bobboi Kaigama, as saying today that the strike will go as planned should the government refuse to peg the minimum wage at N30,000.

According to him, the devaluation of the naira coupled with the high inflation rate had made life unbearable for Nigerian workers.

His words: “We are going to have a nationwide mobilisation on October 31 which is Tuesday across all 36 states and Abuja. Then we will be in Lagos to review our strategy and if there is no positive response by November 6, we will resume our strike.”

Bear in mind that the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, had said last Thursday that N30,000 as minimum wage for civil servants was not feasible.

Speaking during a Channels TV programme, Adesina said even if public office holders sacrifice their entire pay, that will not still make such minimum wage achievable.

Nigeria To Take Final Position On New Minimum Wage On Monday

He said even some governors are unable to pay the N18,000, not to talk of N30,000.

“I think in the spirit of negotiation, labour should not insist on N30,000,” he had said.

However, Kaigama said unions would take the Federal Government more seriously if the salaries and allowances of government officials were slashed.

He added, “Let them cut their allowances first. Let them reduce it by half then we will know that they are serious. Our demands are realistic. It wasn’t Nigerian workers that devalued the naira. It was not Nigerian workers that caused the inflation to rise.

“We are saying they should pay us the 2011 equivalent of N18, 000. That is what we are asking for. They devalued the naira and it has virtually become useless. The purchasing power of the naira is weak.

“So, the Nigerian workers cannot become beggars and a government that claims to be fighting corruption must not leave workers to be vulnerable to the extent that they will see crime as an option. So, let them be fair to us. Paying school fees is very expensive.”
