Is Magu Still Nigeria’s Most Dangerous Man? By Azu Ishiekwene

It’s a surprise that the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, is still standing.

This piece was written by Azu Ishiekwene. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

His appointment had been barely announced when some folks with very long memory of their unpleasant encounter with him in their earlier life stuck the knife in his back; they’ve been twisting it since.

They have been at it now for three years. Just like the title and content of this column this week only slightly amended to reflect the malice of the Magu haters, nothing much has changed.

After working without a letter of appointment and overstaying his confirmation by two years and six months, Magu will be exactly three years on his job on November 11.

The former Director of the State Security Service, Lawal Daura, was the arrowhead of an anti-Magu plot, with a conspiratorial web extending from the corners of the Presidency and the Ministry of Justice to top quarters in the National Assembly.

Daura said in a letter carefully released at the Senate committee confirmation hearing two years ago that Magu was Nigeria’s most dangerous man. The DSS could therefore not recommend him for clearing.

OK, Daura didn’t put it exactly that way – he said, at the time, that there was evidence from eight years ago that Magu took official files home; that he fiddled with recovered assets sometime in his earlier life; that his friend, an air force officer, who was under investigation, paid twice the value of his house rent for him and furnished it; that he flies around with suspects under investigation; and that he even flew first class, against the rules.

With Senate President Bukola Saraki facing corruption trial at the time, Daura’s letter was exactly the Christmas gift that the lawmakers had been praying for.

So, when Santa Claus delivered it to the Senate committee, the matter did not even go to the whole house, as required by law, before Magu was rejected.

This curious episode reminded me of two things – an aphorism and a story. Lavrenti Beria, the former head of Joseph Stalin’s KGB, loved his job to death and was always eager to show his boss.

Whenever he thought Stalin had difficulties finding a reason to eliminate any of his foes, Lavrenti would go to him quietly and whisper, “show me the man and I will find the crime.”

In three years of doing one of Nigeria’s most difficult jobs, Magu has stepped on so many toes that finding a crime to hang him didn’t need a Lavrenti.

Daura made Magu’s fall his main job paying no heed at all to the fact that he himself was standing on feet of clay. When former President Mwai Kibaki started the war against corruption in Kenya, those who wanted it to fail did more than use aphorisms to fight John Githongo, the anti-corruption czar at the time.

According to Michela Wrong in her book, “Our Turn to Eat,” at first, they ignored Githongo. When he seemed to be getting uncomfortably close to the thieves, who were mostly insiders, they tried to shoo him away. He persisted and sank his teeth into one of Kenya’s biggest scandals – the $1 billion Anglo Leasing case. At that point, the backlash got nasty.

They called him a stooge of the Oyinbo man, especially the donor countries, and to incite the public against him, said he was gay and a traitor to his tribe. They sent stalkers after Githongo and threatened him directly. When he refused to back down, they went after his family.

They suddenly remembered a loan taken by his father who had an accounting firm under former President Jomo Kenyatta and reminded John that his father had not finished paying up. “The minister of Justice was telling me that if I eased off my enquiries, then my father’s loan matter would be made to go away,” Githongo said.

Corruption did not relent until Githongo fled for his life.

Magu is not going anywhere. They have thrown at him the kitchen sink and some more, but I’m sure he knows by now that it comes with the territory. Not one EFCC chairperson since inception has served two terms and Magu has the added distinction of nearly completing his first term of four years without a letter of confirmation!

The EFCC is not a perfect organisation but in the last three years we have witnessed clear and sustained efforts to improve its efficiency, the autonomy granted the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, the improved record of conviction, and the excellent facilities in the new Abuja headquarters, to mention a few.

The war on corruption may still have its rough edges, but Magu has pursued a number of those who pocketed public funds and forced them to pay. He has worked with other institutions to tighten financial controls and plugged leakages through which the country was losing billions of naira yearly.

All of this of course will be good music in the ear of many politicians, as long as Magu is not coming after them or their cronies. With many of them already warming up for 2019, they are genuinely worried that the anti-corruption war may upend their political ambition.

Magu has shown from his devotion and courage that he is a clear and present danger to a number of ambitious politicians and their friends used to easy passes. That’s why they want to stop him.

The Senate tried to give the impression that the main reason why it rejected Magu’s nomination twice was that it was looking for someone above board; not exactly like the distinguished senators, I guess, but someone above board!

Yet, we can smell mischief in his three years in office.  Magu has shown a commitment to work and independent-mindedness that have proved to be a major headache for politicians, their powerful cronies and insiders who would rather have a puppet in that office.

Acting appointments belong to the stone age. As Magu marks three years in office without a letter of appointment, we don’t expect any surprises from the Senate. But that’s precisely where Magu’s freedom lies.

He does not owe the politicians any special favours and is therefore not a hostage to the selfish and narrow interests of those who would exploit an administrative leverage just to get even.

In three years, he has done more for the country than those with dodgy records cleared by the DSS and enthusiastically confirmed by the Senate.

Politicians want to fight corruption; that is what they say. But they want to do so on their own terms. Their biggest regret in the last three years, is that they can’t get Magu to play. And that’s a far greater measure of success for the country than could have been conveyed by any letter of appointment.

To succeed, Magu must remain Nigeria’s most dangerous man.

Ex-Manchester United Star Rio Ferdinand Announces Engagement To Kate Wright

Former England and Manchester United soccer star Rio Ferdinand has announced his engagement to reality-television star Kate Wright, after almost two years of dating.

The 39-year-old former defender popped the question to his 27-year-old girlfriend in front of his three children, Lorenz, Tate and Tia while they were on a family vacation in Abu Dhabi.

The couple uploaded a photo on Instagram to announce the happy news.

“The perfect end to our holiday… how could the answer not be yes,” Kate, 27, wrote alongside a snap showing her being hugged by Rio and his three children.

On his part, Ferdinand revealed he had included his kids in his proposal plans, and praised them for keeping the secret for so long.

Bear in mind that Rio was previously married to Rebecca Ellison who died from cancer in 2015. She was 34 when she died from breast cancer in May 2015.

In an interview with the Times earlier this year, Rio said his relationship with Kate was good for his children.

“My relationship with Kate has helped in that they have got a female in the house now,” he said.

“They run past me sometimes to go to her. I’ve had to go through a period of being very, very open, and men aren’t normally like that naturally.

“So having that extra person in the house who is female, who has that softer touch, I think is vitally important for the kids.”

PDP: Atiku Plans To Reduce Petrol Pump Price To N87 Per Litre

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has disclosed that its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar will reduce the cost of premium motor spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol to N87-N90 per litre.

The disclosure was made in a statement issued on Thursday, November 1, by the spokesman of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan.

Tinubu Predicts Doom For Atiku, Opposes Call For Oshiomhole’s Removal

According to him, the former vice-president had consulted with international players in the oil industry and found that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration is fleecing Nigerians.

BRISIN Recruitment: FG Shifts Deadline For Application To Nov. 22 | Apply Here

The PDP alleged that the cabals within the Buhari government are diverting N58 on every litre of petrol sold.

The PDP said: “Our Presidential candidate, Atiku, has worked out a pricing template that will immediately crash the pump price of fuel in the country, since the Buhari-led APC administration, in its insensitivity, has failed to do the needful in the last 3 years.”

“We completely reject the Buhari-led FG’s increase of the official prices of diesel and kerosene. Such increment will bring more economic pressure on the already impoverished nation, as most businesses and homes across the country heavily rely on these products for sustenance

“Our Party is talking with top international players in the oil and gas industry, and this engagement has shown that the appropriate pump price of fuel in the Nigerian market, under the current subsidy regimes of the Buhari Presidency, should be within the borders of N87 to N90.

“With the current price template of crude oil in the international market, the Buhari administration has no justification to keep the pump price of fuel at N145 per liter and watch Nigerians groan under the weight of high prices, while a cabal at the presidency loot the funds”

“For every N145 paid for a liter of fuel, the Buhari Presidency cabal diverts a hidden N58 which Nigerians have continued to pay since the fuel price was increased from N87 to presumably subsidized cost of N145.”

Nigeria Approves National Leather Policy

Nigeria Approves National Leather Policy

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the Nigerian leather policy – which is aimed to boost the business opportunities in the country’s leather sector.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, who made this known, also stated that the policy can generate $900 million if well harnessed.

According to him, the leather industry generated $921million for the government in 2013, a feat that can be replicated.

Speaking with State House Correspondents at the end of the FEC meeting on Wednesday, the minister said:

“We resolved to harness the national leather and bye products policy that will enable the government to attract more investment into the sector.”

“We would do this in a manner that will allow us to make more gains instead of exporting raw leather or semi-finished products. We want to prepare our nation so that we can process our leather and use the leather in the production of finished leather products.

“We have come to realize that it has application in almost every sector of our economic life, including footwear, apparels and automobile industry. There is hardly any machine that you will open without finding a leather component. This is the only way we can create more jobs and a lot of wealth. We would be in a position to fight poverty.

“In any country, they always start with textiles and then leather. Here we have a comparative advantage because our labour cost is low. As far as light leather is concerned, we are number two in Africa and number 8 in terms of exporting leather in the world.

“If we harness the leather we have in Nigeria and that we processed our hides and skins, we will be creating a lot of jobs and wealth because of the small-scale enterprises that will spring up. You will now be having new business springing up.”

WHO Replies Zimbabwean Preacher Who Claimed To Have Cure For HIV

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reaffirmed that there is “no cure” for HIV, even as it urged people living with HIV/AIDS to continue with Anti-Retroviral (ARV) therapy to manage their infections.

5 Persons Killed, 16 Hospitalised As Cholera Invades Gombe

The UN Health made the reaffirmation after a local preacher in Zimbabwe reportedly claimed that he had received divine revelation of a herbal cure.

According to media reports, the Zimbabwean cleric had notified his congregation in the capital, Harare, on Sunday of the “cure” for HIV and AIDS.

He also reportedly claimed that a healing plant had been revealed to him by God, sparking a media outcry.

The nation’s largest newspaper, the Harare Herald, reported that his claims were scientifically baseless and that the Zimbabwean Government was actively discouraging the purchase of unapproved medicines.

UNAIDS statistics also stated that Zimbabwe recorded some 30,000 AIDS-related deaths in 2016, with well over one million people living with HIV in the same year.

However, while speaking on the matter, Dr Alex Gasaira, WHO’s representative in the country, explicitly stated that “there is no cure for HIV infection”.

“Those desperate for a cure should not abandon their ARV therapy,” the WHO official advised.

He explained that researchers working in the field had been advised to subject their treatments to the Zimbabwe Ministry of Health for proper clinical trials and procedures.

“Until a cure is verified, effective ARV drugs can control HIV infections and help prevent transmission, so that people with HIV, and those at substantial risk, can enjoy healthy, long and productive lives,” Gasasira added.

Gombe State Government on Thursday said a fresh outbreak of cholera had killed five people, while 16 others were hospitalised at the Primary Health Centre, Kembu in Balanga Local Government Area of the state.

The state Acting Epidemiologist, Dr Nuhu Bile, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria in Gombe.

Bile said that the cholera outbreak occurred in October.

According to him, 70 patients were treated and discharged, while the five people died before medical help could reach them.

He added that 16 others were being treated at the health centre for the disease.

Bile said the recent deaths had brought the number of cholera mortality to 13, while no fewer than 500 patients had been treated and discharged in the last five months.

The epidemiologist attributed the cause of the outbreak to the damaged five hand pumps in the community which forced people to seek unsafe alternative source of water.

He named some of the recently affected local governments to include Yamaltu-Deba, Funakaye Gombe with the most recent being Balanga.

Tinubu Predicts Doom For Atiku, Opposes Call For Oshiomhole’s Removal

A national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has said that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, is going nowhere come 2019.

He said this while aiming a dig at the alleged meeting by some leaders of the opposition party (PDP) in Dubai to strategize on how to defeat President Muhammadu Buhari.

TRENDING: Governor Ganduje Caught In New Video Receiving Dollars

Atiku is currently in Dubai and has allegedly been holding series of meetings with high ranking members of the party to adopt best ways to unseat Mr Buhari.

But Tinubu, after meeting with Mr Buhari on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, said:

“We don’t fear, whether it’s in the jungle, or it’s in Dubai or it’s in Abu Dhabi, people are free to meet and strategize in any way. But we are not going back to the illusion of the PDP.”

The former governor of Lagos State told State House correspondents that he believes it is not possible for Nigerians to return the PDP to power.

“They say slow and steady wins the race; we inherited that from our forefathers and knowledgeable people. We can’t go back to the pit that we inherited for 16 years. They can strategize from anywhere but a leopard cannot change its skin,” he said.

Speaking on what he discussed with the president, Mr Tinubu said “the meeting is about the nation, the country, our people, peace, stability and economic progress.”

U.S. Willing To Grant Visa To Atiku

Mr Tinubu also offered his support to the national chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole, who is under pressure from some of the party’s governors to vacate his position

When asked if he was in support of the call for Oshiomhole’s removal, he said, “No! We all have to respect party supremacy.

“You were all here when we had the congress. We elected the new executives. We had the convention and the NEC was formed.

“We surrendered to avoid conflict, domination, abuse of power.

“We surrendered our rights, all rights, to the National Working Committee headed by Adams Oshiomohole, that the NWC should set up electoral bodies to supervise various state congresses and elections. We signed off for it.

“So, if it is not in our individual favour, so be it. We gave three options: consensus. Where there is no consensus because you are more than two or three and you cannot agree on one candidate, you go to the next level.

“The next level is the stakeholders’ delegate and you have to be supervised by the National Working Committee of the party, national election committee of the party. That shows party supremacy.

“The freest option, the less cumbersome is direct primary; line up and count the number – one, two and three.  If you win, you win and if you fail, go home.

“Then an appeal committee was set up to listen to all appeals, internal mechanism for conflict resolution. It was there, you cannot turn against that. You cannot turn against all of that. No!

“Party is supreme. Party must be respected. Abuses will not do it and anger will not do it. It is party politics, somebody will win and somebody will lose, too bad.”

Reuben Abati Emerges PDP’s Deputy Governorship Candidate In Ogun

Former Presidential spokesman, Dr Reuben Abati, has emerged as the running mate of the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Leke Shittu, ahead of 2019 general elections.

Daily Trust reports that former governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has been equally named as the candidate for Ogun East Senatorial district.

This followed acceptance of the candidates’ list of the PDP faction backed by the Senator representing Ogun East, Buruji Kashamu, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The INEC had in a letter addressed to the National Chairman of PDP, Uche Secondus, notified the party of the acceptance of the list submitted by Bayo Dayo’s faction following the Federal High court judgements, directing the umpire to accept the candidates as against that of Sikirullahi Ogundele-led faction which is recognised by the PDP national leadership.

Kashamu, in a statement, urged the public to disregard the statement credited to Kola Ologbondiyan, national publicity secretary of the PDP, that only the national leadership of a party can submit candidates list to INEC.

The statement read: “The candidates’ list of the Kashamu backed Bayo Dayo exco of Ogun PDP has been received and fully acknowledged by INEC for the 2019 elections.”

“Prince Leke Shittu and Dr. Reuben Abati were duly acknowledged as the Ogun PDP Governorship and Deputy Governorship candidates respectively.

“Former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, is for the Senate, Ogun East; and all other candidates for the Senatorial, Federal House of Representatives and the State House of Assembly were also accepted and duly acknowledged.

“Any rumour being peddled around by our National Chairman and National Publicity Secretary through a purported press release should be disregarded, as the duo are deliberately acting unlawfully and beyond their powers to which they’ve refused wise counsel to toe the path of rule of law.”

The federal government has extended the deadline for the Basic Registry and Information System in Nigeria (BRISIN) recruitment application to November 22.

A statement issued by the Head of BRISIN implementation in Nigeria, Dr. Anthony Uwa, said the extension is to enable all intending applicants to register.

“It has no political party, no colour, no ethnic group, no tribe and no religion; it is for the benefit of every Nigerian.

“BRISIN is a SYSTEM not a Ministry, Department or Agency, but an instrument of self-discipline that will assist Nigeria to the highest height.

“FCT is the capital of Nigeria with 62 wards, six area councils and one central admin head.

Imam Set Ablaze, 14 Others Killed As Boko Haram Attacks Borno Villages, IDP Camps

An Imam was set ablaze, while no less than 14 other people were killed after some suspected members of the Boko Haram terrorist group attacked some villages close to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

According to Channels Television, in one of the villages which came under attack on Wednesday evening – Kofa, the insurgents set ablaze the Imam of the village along with four members of his family.

It was gathered that while residents fled the village during the attack, the cleric and his family had stayed behind.

Other villages attacked by the terrorists are Abba Malumti, Gozari, and Dalori II Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, all in Konduga local government area of the state.

In Abba Malumti and Dalori II IDP camps, eight and two people were reportedly killed respectively.

Bukar Kashim, a displaced person at Dalori 2 IDPs camp, said the security personnel at the camp were overpowered by the invaders, adding that they shot and killed an old man in his presence.

“We thoughts it was normal shooting but it turned out to be Boko Haram”, he told Daily Trust.

“Everyone was in disarrayed, they entered after the security and CJTF [Civilian Joint Task Force] were overpowered, one person was killed and about 40 tents were burnt.

“The government need to rise and protect us. This is an evidence that we are not safe anymore. We are begging President Buhari to protect us.

“Many of our people are yet to return and we don’t know their fate.”

It was also learnt that the security operatives on the ground were faced with superior firepower and outnumbered as over 200 insurgents came for the attack.

The Nigerian confirmed the attack in a statement issued.

The statement read: “Troops of 251 Task Force Battalion successfully foiled a BHT attempted Attack on Kofa Village and Dalori IDP camp in Maiduguri on 31 Oct 18 at about 10pm. The terrorists gained access through a bush path behind the village in 4 vehicles and some motorcycles. They ransacked the market in front of the IDP camp.

“On sighting own troops that were mobilized to the area, they set some houses and the market ablaze and fled along Maiduguri-Bama Road. However, one civilian was found dead.

“Own troops are presently assisting the villagers who ran into the bush back to their homes while the Borno State Fire Service have contained the inferno.”

U.S. Willing To Grant Visa To Atiku

U.S. Willing To Grant Visa To Atiku

The Director General of the Atiku campaign organisation, Gbenga Daniel, has disclosed that officials of the United States have informed the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, that he would get a U.S. visa if he applies for one now.

Remains Of Missing Nigerian Army General Found In Abandoned Well

Mr Daniel said this in an interview on Channels Television programme, Politics Today, on Wednesday.

“I can also confirm to you that in the last few days, there have been signals from the officials of the United States that he (Atiku) should come forward, that they will grant him visa. They want him to come to the United States of America,” he said.

There have been speculations in the media in recent years that Mr Abubakar was prohibited from entering the U.S. due to allegations of financial impropriety levelled against him, especially in the aftermath of a U.S. congressional report which probed his numerous international financial dealings.

Nigerian Govt, NLC Reject Governors’ N22,500 Proposal For Minimum Wage

While the ex-VP has dismissed insinuations that he cannot travel to the U.S, he, however, admitted that he was not granted a visa when he applied.

Speaking further, during the interview, Mr Daniel also explained that the perception of corruption that had tarred the image of Mr Abubakar over the years was misplaced.

”Well, my opinion is that the issue appears to have been over-flogged. I remember when we were running the campaign in the primaries and everybody kept confronting us on this perception and we brought it out in the open that indeed it is no more than perception, politically motivated perception which unfortunately appears not to have stopped.

”By and large, I think as we move toward the real issues, people would just realise that this is just politically motivated issues. I have repeatedly said that this is not a Banana Republic. Nigeria as a people, we know our weaknesses, anything that is nagetive about our leaders, we are ready to believe it.

”But until when (corruption) charges are pressed, as far as we are concerned, there are no issues there. If you look at the newspapers in the last few days, we have read statement issued by the (U.S.) state department that they have no issues or whatsoever with Atiku Abubakar.”

903 Foreign Medical, Dental Graduates Write JAMB Exam

About 903 foreign medical and dental graduates wrote the recent professional examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Nigerian Army University Begins Academic Activities For 2018/2019 Session

This disclosure was made by the Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Tajudeen Sanusi, when speaking with newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to him, the examination was for medical graduates who intended to practice in Nigeria.

Mr Sanusi explained that the essence of the examination was to properly assess the graduates’ professional competence before approving licence for them to practice in the country.

WAEC Introduces New Rule That Allows Registration Of Candidates 24 Hours Before Exams

The registrar said the examination was monitored by external examiners from across the country in line with global best practice.

“It is a global practice that once you train in a jurisdiction other than yours and you find yourself in another jurisdiction and want to practice, there is the need to assess your level of competence so that you can be licensed to practice.

“This means that even those of us who trained and are fully registered in Nigeria, if we go to Ghana, we will have to sit for a similar examination and pass before we can be licensed to practice in Ghana.”

Mr Sanusi said the council would not give preference to any of the candidates, hence the choice of JAMB to conduct the examination.

He expressed the hope that all 903 candidates would be successful, particularly at a time when the country was in dire need of more doctors.
