Panic As Another Earth Tremor Hits Abuja

Following panic that arose on Thursday due to reports of another Earth Tremor occurrence in Maitama District, Abuja, the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development has assured Abuja residents to remain calm.

The Special Assistant to the Minister of State of the Ministry, Ishaku Kigbu, made this known in a statement in Abuja.

According to him, the NGSA technical team were still conducting further assessment of the occurrence.

Mr Kigbu said the tremor which lasted for a minute occurred at about 12.26p.m.

Bear in mind that vibration and movement of the earth occurred in September in Mpape and parts of Maitama District, Abuja.

“The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), an Agency of the ministry, saddled with the responsibility of such occurrence had dispatched a technical team to the location for assessment.

“The report said that an internal response protocol was immediately activated, and relevant Government agencies such as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and other stakeholders were informed.

“The preliminary findings indicated that the tremor occurred 12.26 p.m. around Panama Street in Maitama District,” he said.

The minister’s aide said that after field evaluations, the NGSA determined that the intensity was about 3.0 on the Mercalli Intensity Scale, which means it was felt indoors and lasted less than a minute.

NAN reports that he said that further inspections by the agency revealed that there was no structural damage.

Court Bans NLC, TUC From Going On Nationwide Strike On Nov 6

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has banned the organised labour, comprising the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) from embarking on its indefinite strike scheduled to commence on November 6.

Nigerian Govt, NLC Reject Governors’ N22,500 Proposal For Minimum Wage

The presiding judge, Justice Sanusi Kado, on Friday, gave the order in a ruling on an ex parte application moved on behalf of the Federal Government by the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Dayo Apata.

Speaking in agreement with Apata, the judge held that if the strike is allowed it would lead to huge economic loss to both public and private institutions and could jeopardise the health of many Nigerians who would not be able to access health facilities during the period.

Nigerian Governors Agree To Pay N22,500 As Minimum Wage (READ FULL STATEMENT)

The judge further restrained the NLC, the TUC and the Incorporated Trustees of the Nigerian Governors Forum (listed as the first, second, and third defendants) from taking steps capable of destroying the subject of the dispute.

The hearing of the main suit has been fixed for November 8.

The code takes effect from December 1 2018, the apex bank said in a circular issued on Thursday, November 1, but dated October 26, 2018.

In the circular, signed by Mr. Kevin N Amugo, Director Financial Policy and Regulation Department, CBN and published on its website, the CBN said the new corporate governance regulation is to further strengthen the institutions and reposition them to perform their statutory roles.

The regulation said the Board shall be accountable and responsible for the performance and affairs of the BDC and members of the Board are severally and jointly liable for the activities for the BDC.

The new regulation also limits the number of family members that can be on the management of BDCs.

It said that “the positions of the Board Chairman and the MD/CEO shall be separate. No one person shall combine the two positions in any BDC at the same time. For the avoidance of doubt, no executive Vice Chairman shall be allowed in the Board structure.”

It also said “not more than two members of a family shall be on the board of a BDC at the same time. The expression ‘family’ includes director’s spouse, parents, children, siblings, cousins, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and in-laws.”

“Where the BDC is a member of a holding company, not more than two family members shall be allowed to serve on the Boards of the BDC and the holding company” and that “no two members of a family shall occupy the positions of Chairman and MD/CEO of a BDC.”

“To ensure continuity and injection of fresh ideas, Non-Executive Directors of BDCs shall serve for a maximum of three terms of four years each. The tenure of the MD/CEO of the BDC shall be in accordance with the terms of engagement for tenure of five years renewable every five years subject to CBN approval”.
