PDP Harvests ’20,000 APC Members From Akpabio’s Home Town

There are strong indications that about twenty thousand members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Essien Udim, the home town of Godswil Akpabio, former Governor of the state, have  defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to Sahara Reporters, the occasion leading to the massive defection was marred by an attack by hired thugs, with Moses Ekpo, Deputy Governor of the state, among party stakeholders and government officials to escape.

The news outlet further said:

The highlight of the reception for the new members, held at the Unity Hall of Essien Udim Local Government Council headquarters, was a massive declaration of support for Governor Udom Emmanuel by former and serving chapter and ward executive council members of the APC.

Prince Ukpong Akpabio, younger brother and former aide of the immediate past Senate Minority Leader, as well as Chief Michael Afangideh, regarded as Akpabio’s political godfather, also declared for Udom.

The Deputy Governor was receiving the APC defectors on behalf of the Governor when thugs suspected to be Akpabio’s supporters stormed the venue and attacked on the participants, including Ekpo.

The thugs, allegedly led by one Adionganye Akpabio, a cousin of Akpabio, and Imo Ibara from Ukana West ward1, arrived in buses and started launching missiles at everyone at the premises,

Speaking with Ukpong Akpabio, the state Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, thanked God for the prompt response of the Police to arrest the situation.

The miscreants succeeded in injuring some people and destroying some vehicles at the venue before escaping via a nearby river at Afaha Ikot Ebak.

A Honda Accord vehicle belonging to the PDP Chapter Chairman in Essien Udim, Hon. Ntiedo Usoro, was damaged, as well as some cars and motorcycles belonging to the APC members who defected to the PDP.

Elder Ufot EBong, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Technical Matters, said he was astonished by the nature of the attack.

“I have never seen anything like this; they came armed and they made bonfires on the road and attempted to barricade us inside so they can kill us,” he said. “This is very horrible and I am worried about this development.”

READ: Full Statement By President Buhari Regarding The N30,000 Minimum Wage

Featured Image
On Tuesday, November 6, President Muhammadu Buhari received the report of the national minimum wage tripartite committee in which N30,000 was negotiated as the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
Read his full statement as released to the press below
“On 27th November 2017, I inaugurated the National Minimum Wage Committee with a mandate to recommend a new minimum wage for the workers of our country. This exercise became necessary for many reasons. The last review took place in 2011. We all know since then, the prices of key consumables have increased and the most vulnerable of our workers are struggling to make ends meet.
Since 2011, many changes have taken place. Nigeria rebased its GDP to become the largest economy in Africa. We reported very strong GDP growth rates and exceptional performance of our capital markets. However, these reported successes did not flow into the pockets and homes of majority of Nigerians. In the last three years, we focused on correcting this deficiency. We are working to create a diversified and inclusive economy. We are pushing to clear pension arrears owed to our retired workers with the limited resources available to us.
We supported state governments to pay workers salary. And of course, we set up a committee in order to review the minimum wage of workers. In constituting this committee, we took into account the need for all stakeholders to be adequately represented – the government, the private sector and most importantly the workers. Our goal was to get an outcome that was consensual.
From the onset, we knew the committee had a difficult task ahead of it. But at the same time, we were also confident that the patriotic and professional background of its members would produce realistic, fair and implementable recommendations that will be considered by both the executive and legislative arms of government. I am not surprised that the committee has worked for close to one year. I am also not surprised that on a few occasions, the debates got heated and sometimes, these differences came out. What is truly inspiring is that, in almost all instances of disagreements, the committee members always came back to the negotiating table with a common goal of improving the welfare of Nigerian workers. On behalf of all Nigerians today, I want to thank you for your commitment and sacrifice in getting us to where we are today.
In the past few days, I have been receiving regular updates on your deliberations. And today, I am pleased that you have completed your work in a peaceful and non-confrontational manner. The entire nation is grateful to you all.
The Committee Chairman highlighted some of the challenges encountered during your deliberations, especially as it relates to having a consensus position acceptable by all parties. I understand, on the government side, the concerns raised were around affordability – that today many states struggle to meet their existing salary requirements. On the side of labour, the points raised focused on the need for any increase to be meaningful. In a way, both arguments are valid. I want to assure you all that we will immediately put in place the necessary machinery that will close out these open areas.
Our plan is to transmit the Executive Bill to the National Assembly for passage within the shortest possible time. I am fully committed to having a new National Minimum Wage Act in the very near future. Let me use this opportunity to recognise the leadership of the organized labour and private sector as well as representatives of State and Federal Governments for all your hard work. The fact that we are here today, is a notable achievement. As the Executive Arm commences its review of your submission, we will continue to engage you all in closing any open areas presented in this report.
I therefore would like to ask for your patience and understanding in the coming weeks. May I therefore, employ workers and their leaders not to allow themselves to be used as political weapons. Thank you and may God bless our country.”

Despicable Me Creator To Reboot Shrek Franchise

Featured Image

Universal Studios have tasked the man behind the Despicable Me movies, Chris Meledandri, to bring everybody’s favorite ogre, Shrek back to the big screen.

According to a report from Variety, one of the main objectives of the revival will be to reinvigorate the story of Puss ‘n’ Boots as well. Meledandri has been tasked with finding coming up with new story lines to reintroduce Shrek and Puss to the new generation of moviegoers.

The famed animation guru also has no plans to change the original voice cast as he believes the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas are all part of the magic of Shrek.

“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations,” explains Meledandri. “The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”

This move to revive the franchise comes after Universal Pictures’ parent company, Comcast bought DreamWorks Animation, the studio behind Shrek for $3.8 billion back in 2016, putting the studio under the same umbrella as Meledandri’s Illumination Animation, which produced Despicable Me and The Secret Life of Pets.

Brymo Says Musicians Who Turn Politicians Are “Thieves”

Popular Nigerian singer and songwriter, Olawale Ashimi, with the stage name, Brymo, has reportedly described musicians who “suddenly” leave their craft for politics as “thieves”.

The “Ba nuso” singer was said to have made this known in a recent interview with Sahara TV at the recently concluded 2018 Ake Books and Arts Festival.

Brymo Reveals Why He Performs Semi-Nude

The singer, who once sang and performed semi-nude, said that musicians have many issues to address within the entertainment industry, and should focus on that, rather than “suddenly dumping music for politics”.

His words: “I think it is a very difficult move in the sense that there are years invested in every industry. So, you’ve been a musician for 10 to 15 years, and suddenly you dump that to go and become a politician and run for office. You’re just a thief, because there are issues in the entertainment industry you can take part in to fix. Why do you have to run for public office? There are things you can do as a musician in your own music industry and make things better there. If you cannot make things better there, how are you going to make things better in public office?

“I believe everybody should stay in their lane. Let musicians be musicians and let politicians be politicians; let everybody do their job. I have invested 15 years in music and I have no intention to throw all that away for another career. This is my career; this Brymo. I feel everybody should treat their music that way and leave politics alone for politicians.”

INEC Deletes Names Of 300,000 Nigerians During Voter Register Purge

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that it had deleted over 300,000 names from the voter register, adding that it will on Tuesday, November 6, publish the voter register across the 120,000 polling units across the nation.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this during a meeting with a delegation of election administrators from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

According to him: “As at today, over 300,000 names have been dropped after the automatic fingerprints identification system.”

Yakubu further urged members of the public to assist the commission in purging the register of ineligible voters such as illegal aliens and underage voters.

He said, “Between November 6 and November 12, we shall display the register of voters nationwide for claims and objections.”

The INEC boss said the commission had been purging the voter register of some irregular registrations, adding that over 300,000 had been removed as of last week.

Yakubu added, “For the registered voters, we have been cleaning up on our own with the help of the Automatic Fingerprint Identification System. As of last week before I travelled, I was told that over 300,000 names were dropped after the fingerprint system was used.

“But cleaning up the register is not just the responsibility of the commission but the responsibility of every Nigerian and that is why the law says we should display the register for claims and objections which will be done between November 6 and 12 in the 120,000 polling units nationwide.

“And I will like to seize this opportunity to appeal to citizens to check when we display the register so that they can draw the attention of the commission to the prevalence of any ineligible persons so that we can further clean up the register.”

It Does’t Matter Which Frenchman Wins The Ballon d’Or – Raphael Varane

Featured Image
Raphael Varane says his France team-mates will be happy whichever of them wins this year’s hotly contested Ballon d’Or award.

Varane has been backed by France icon Michel Platini for the prize after winning both the Champions League and the World Cup in 2018, the only player to do so.

Michel Platini Backs Raphael Varane To Win The Ballon D’Or

But contenders include France colleagues Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Greizmann, the latter forward having fired Atletico Madrid to Europa League glory against Marseille last term.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have won the award five times each in the last decade, while Luka Modric is also in the running after claiming the Golden Ball for his performances in Croatia’s run to Russia 2018’s final.

Varane, though, said he and his France team-mates have not talked about who could win this year’s Ballon d’Or.

“I think there won’t be a problem between us,” the centre-back said to France Football, the publication behind the Ballon d’Or. “If a Frenchman wins it we’ll be happy, whoever it is.

“It’s in the news, but we don’t talk about it. We speak about what was done well, but not [that] this one deserves it more than another. We all contributed. You can’t say: ‘He doesn’t deserve it, he didn’t work.’”

Despite France also boasting stars including Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, Varane feels their triumph under Didier Deschamps was a team effort.

“We do a team sport. Individually, you’re worthless! You can be a huge player if you play alone, the team loses,” he added. “All the teams that win a big trophy, it is thanks to the collective, when each one takes pleasure to share with the others. This is how it works.

“Basically, I played football to share with others, to excel together, to achieve a goal. After, we all have our ego, our pride and our personality. But all alone, in football, it does not work.

“I am a young old man. I really feel in the middle. I have a good feeling with everyone. I have responsibilities within the group, I am one of the most experienced, of those who must reassure others. I always had a bit of a big brother role. I have a rather fraternal side.

“I’m not the uncle, nor the youngest, I’m the brother. Ben Mendy called me Raphton. I thought I knew all my nicknames but he invented another one. He is inspired.”

Manchester City Forced To Defend Themselves From Financial Fair Play Cheating Claims

Featured Image

Manchester City have been forced to defend themselves from accusations they have tried to cheat European football’s Financial Fair Play rules.

Last week, German magazine Der Spiegel published a story which claimed the Premier League leaders struck a secret deal with European football’s governing body UEFA in 2014 to avoid a potential Champions League ban for breaching FFP regulations.

Manchester City said at the time the original magazine article was published that they would not be commenting and that the attempt to damage their reputation was “organised and clear”.

On Monday, Der Spiegel published a new article on what it alleges are City’s attempts to deceive UEFA by channelling millions of pounds of their owner Sheikh Mansour’s immense wealth into the club via their Abu Dhabi-based sponsors.

City repeated the statement they issued last week, defending their position and referring to “out of context materials purportedly hacked or stolen from City Football Group and Manchester City personnel and associated people”, but are likely to face more questions throughout the week.

Citing emails between City bosses that it claims to have obtained, Der Spiegel alleges that Sheikh Mansour, a senior member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family, has been topping up City’s already lucrative sponsorship deals with Emirati companies with his own money – which if true would be a clear breach of FFP’s rules against “related parties” pumping cash into clubs.

According to the emails, Sheikh Mansour had “supplemented” City’s “Abu Dhabi partnership deals” by £149.5million by the time the club won the first of three Premier League titles under his ownership in 2012.

A year later, Der Spiegel claims, the club had to fill a £9.9million hole in their budget to meet FFP’s ‘break even’ requirement because of severance payments to sacked manager Roberto Mancini.

The club’s solution, according to the German magazine, was to get three of its main backers – investment firm Aabar, the Abu Dhabi tourism authority and airline Etihad – to make up-front payments totalling £7.5million for increases in their sponsorship deals.

And in a series of emails quoted from by Der Spiegel, dated between 2010 and 2015, club directors appear to state that Sheikh Mansour is the real source of a large chunk of the money that is purportedly flowing to East Manchester from Aabar, the tourism authority, Etihad and telecoms firm Etisalat.

Der Spiegel’s report referred to an internal email which it says was sent by director Simon Pearce, who is quoted as saying that Aabar’s contribution is £3million, with £12million coming from “alternative sources provided by His Highness”.

In December 2013, Pearce is reported by the German magazine to have written in an internal email that Etihad’s contribution “remains constant at 8m” despite it being officially listed at £35million.

Der Spiegel reports that by 2015, the “supplement” had grown to a staggering £59.5million, according to an email it claims to have seen from City’s chief financial officer Jorge Chumillas.

A spokesperson for Etihad denied the airline was not the real source of the money it paid to City.

“The airline’s financial obligations, associated with the partnership of the club and the broader City Football Group, have always been, and remain, the sole liability and responsibility of Etihad Airways,” the statement said.

“This is reflected in the airline’s audited accounts. Our partnership with Manchester City and the broader City Football Group continues to deliver important ongoing and accumulative returns on our investments.”

The second part of Der Spiegel’s series was released on Tuesday and alleged that City set up a project group to circumvent FFP rules. City responded to Der Spiegel with the statement issued last week.

UEFA said it “cannot comment on specific cases due to confidentiality obligations” but the governing body is certain to come under pressure in the coming weeks to reopen its FFP investigation into City’s finances.

Manchester City Forced To Defend Themselves From Financial Fair Play Cheating Claims

An Inspector of the Nigerian Police, attached to the 22 Police Mobile Force, Lagos state, was on Tuesday, November 6, found dead in a borrow pit along Ekwuoma Road, Owerri Olubo in Delta State.

It was also gathered that the weapon and ammunition belonging to the 51-year-old Samuel Onwuerigho, were taken away by those who murdered him.

While the cause of his death and how he ended up in a borrow pit remain unknown, Vanguard quoted his wife, Mrs Joy Onwuerigho, last night, as telling a family member that her husband left their Dominion Estate, Iyanu-Iyesi, Sango, Ogun state home on September 13 without informing her.

A relative, Joel Obuseh, also reported at Galilee Division in Delta state that the deceased passed through his Owerri Olubo house at about 1.00 am on September 14 and told him he was on his way to Ubulu Uku, a nearby village.

Obuseh told the police that Onwuerigho’s wife also called him on phone disclosing that her husband left home without informing her.

Her inquiry prompted a search and the decomposing body found inside a burrow pit.

A police source in Asaba confirmed to the news outlet  that the remains were seen “without any external injury on the body.”

Al Ahly Striker Walid Azaro Banned From CAF Champions League Final For Tearing His Own Shirt

Featured Image

Al Ahly’s Walid Azaro has been banned for two matches by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and will miss the second leg of the Champions League final this Friday.

A CAF statement gave no reason for the ban, but it is understood Walid Azaro has been punished for deliberately tearing his own shirt during a stormy first leg last weekend.

Ahly defeated Esperance of Tunisia 3-1 in the first leg in Alexandria and Azaro was involved in two controversial penalty decisions, both of which the Egyptians scored from.

Esperance players, coaches and officials claimed a dive won him the first penalty and that he feigned receiving a blow and tore his shirt for the second spot-kick.

Ahly have also been fined $20,000 (17,500 euros) and their coach, Patrice Carteron, faces a hearing regarding allegations of unsporting behaviour.

Romelu Lukaku Misses Manchester United Training Ahead Of Juventus UCL Match

Featured Image

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku was absent from training session ahead of their Champions League clash with Juventus in Turin.

Romelu Lukaku was dropped for Manchester United’s victory over Everton 10 days ago then missed out on the squad entirely for the weekend’s win at Bournemouth after picking up an injury in training.

Defender Diogo Dalot, who has only made two appearances since signing from Porto, also missed out but Antonio Valencia and Marouane Fellaini did take part in the session at Carrington ahead of United’s trip to Italy.

Valencia has been sidelined for a month while Fellaini picked up a groin injury on international duty with Belgium in October.

Lukaku’s absence could offer England striker Rashford a chance to shine, with Mourinho’s other attacking options including Alexis Sanchez and the in-form Anthony Martial, who has scored in four successive Premier League games.

Report: Chelsea Favorites To Sign Nabil Fekir From Lyon

Featured Image

Chelsea are interested in signing Lyon’s captain Nabil Fekir following his failed summer move to Liverpool, according to reports

Fekir looked certain to join Liverpool during the previous transfer window and had even conducted interviews with the club’s in-house media team only for the deal to break down at the 11th hour.

Concerns over an underlying knee problem are thought to be the reason behind the abandoned move, but L’Equipe reports that Chelsea and Bayern Munich are now interested in the 25-year-old.

Both clubs are understood to have scouted Fekir extensively this season and are the two most interested parties, with Liverpool no longer in the running.

Fekir current deal expires in 2020, and Lyon could be tempted to cash in on their captain next summer in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer the following year.

Fekir has scored two and assisted two more in seven Ligue 1 appearances for Lyon so far this term.

Fred Will Succeed At Manchester United – Paulo Fonseca

Featured Image

Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca has backed Fred to come good on his £52m transfer fee despite his slow start to life at Manchester United

The two worked together in Ukraine, winning back to back doubles as well as progressing in the Champions League.

“He’s a big talent and he’s still developing,” Fonseca said to ‘ESPN FC’.

“I have no doubt he’ll have a great future at Manchester United. But, of course, he needs time. It’s totally different from what he was used to in Ukraine. He needs a period to adapt, to the club, to the league. It’s a totally different situation.

“In my opinion, his position is in a midfield two as the more attacking of two central midfield players.

“He is physically strong and mobile, with the quality to build play, but he is also very good at breaking from midfield and going to either side of the attack.”
