Atiku Approves N33,000 Minimum Wage For His Over 100,000 Workers

While the Federal government of Nigeria mulls on implementing a N30,000 national minimum wage, the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has approved for all of his staffs in his corporation, N33,000 as minimum wage.

The managing director of the Atiku owned, Gotel Communications, Mohammed El-Yakub, confirmed this in a statement on Thursday, Nigerian Guardian reports.

The Gotel Communications based in Yola.

“The N33,000 new salary scale, which takes effect from November 2018, includes domestic servants and all categories of workers on the former vice president’s payroll,” El-Yakub said.

El-Yakub said over 100,000 people are currently drawing salary on a monthly basis from the former Vice President, says Sahara Reporters.

Following the recommendation of N30,000 as minimum wage by the tripartite committee set up by the Federal Government, Atiku had urged President Muhammadu Buhari to endorse the figure.

Abubakar on Wednesday said President Muhammadu Buhari cannot be trusted to implement the proposed N30,000.

In a statement issued by his media office, the presidential hopeful said Buhari, who is known for ‘flip-flopping’ may not have the political will to implement the new wage which he said does not even translate to a ‘living wage’.

Zenith Bank’s Amangbo Promises More Support As First Bank Retains Title

Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank, Peter Amangbo, has assured the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) that the bank will continue to support women basketball in the country.

Speaking at the final of the 14th edition of the women’s league sponsored by the bank, Amangbo said it was no longer a sponsorship but a partnership that would stay for many more years.

Amangbo expressed his happiness on the level of the competition this year despite the fact that it was an abridged league as he extolled the virtues of the late owner of one of the finalists, Dolphins Basketball team, late Wale Aboderin, who died early this year.

“I want to use this opportunity to remember a personal friend of mine and also the owner of Dolphins Women Team, Aboderin,” he said.

“We all missed him today and the whole of the basketball family but I am happy that the players and the family are living his dream.

“I want to assure everyone that it is no longer a sponsorship, but a partnership with the NBBF that will last for long.

“I want to appeal to all the players to be more dedicated and focused on their careers and also look up to the future.”

Meanwhile, defending champions, First Bank Basketball team, retained their title after defeating youthful Dolphins.

Despite a late rally by Dolphins led by Veronica Charles in the third and fourth quarters of the game, First Bank held on for the victory with 84 points to 66 points.

In the third place game played between Customs Basketball and new entrants to the league, MFM basketball team, ended 57 – 49 in favour of the border girls.

The Final Six final match was witnessed by a huge turnout of lover of the game. The event started only on Sunday and the two finalists will represent Nigeria next week in continental basketball competition.

Bill Seeking To Remove Age As Employment Condition Passes Second Reading

Bill Seeking To Remove Age As Employment Condition Passes Second Reading

A Bill for an Act to abolish age barrier in government employment on Wednesday passed second reading at the House of Representatives.

The “Bill for an Act to Eradicate the Age Discrimination against Job seekers in Federal Government Agencies; and for Related Matters (HB. 1502)” was sponsored by Sergius Ogun (APC, Edo) and Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos).

Bill To Extend Retirement Age Of Nigerian Teachers Passes Second Reading

Mr Ogun, while moving the motion for a second reading, said the new law will ensure that no Nigerian job seeker is disqualified from government employment on the basis of age.

According to him, the bill will first take effect on federal government MDAs before other sectors.

“It is a key responsibility of we parliamentarians, as representatives of the people, to ensure that no Nigerian job seeker is discriminated against with regard to age in employment opportunities in Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs),” he said.

Mr Ogun added that the adopting that measure will curb the menace of unemployment in Nigeria.

In his part, Babajimi Benson, who co-sponsored the bill, while giving his submission, pointed out that apart from age, sex, religion and ethnicity are other variables in which discrimination is rampant in Nigeria.

“I therefore call for the abolition that has deprived qualified, energetic, and patriotic Nigerians the opportunity to fulfil their goals and contribute to societal development.”

In his contribution, Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun (APC, Osun) argued that the major aim of the bill has been taken care of by relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which if enforced, could be taken advantage of by anyone affected by discrimination in government employment.

When put to voice vote by Speaker Yakubu Dogara, the bill was unanimously adopted for second reading.

Bill To Extend Retirement Age Of Nigerian Teachers Passes Second Reading

A Bill for an Act to extend the retirement age of teachers in Nigeria and for related matters on Tuesday passed second reading at the House of Representatives.

The bill, which was sponsored by Mr. Adekoya Adesegun Abdel-Majid (PDP-Ogun) seeks to increase the retirement age of teachers in public primary and secondary schools from 60 to 65 years.

Leading the debate earlier, Abdel-Majid said that over the years, teachers had been clamouring for the extension of retirement age.

He said that due to the high rate of retirement without commensurate recruitment, a vacuum was being created.

The lawmakers said that most retired teachers still had a lot to offer and were often employed by private schools to tap into their wealth of experience.

He argued that the older the teacher, the more patient and caring s/he might likely become in attending to pupils.

Abdel-Majid said that the extension would also serve as a viable means of curbing the challenge of low manpower in public schools.

In her contribution, Ms. Betty Apiafi (PDP-Rivers) argued against the bill, saying that there was a case of generational gap.

She referred to present day school children as “generation Z”, saying they were computer literate and that 65-year-old teachers might not motivate them.

The legislator stressed the need for the country to return to the drawing board to build manpower that would drive the education sector.

Also, Mr. Muhammed Monguno (APC-Borno) said that the extension of retirement age for teachers would attract youths to the profession.

Monguno emphasised training of teachers saying that it would bridge any gap between the two generations.

He said that the retirement age for judges and lecturers had been increased, adding that there was no need to deny the teachers the same gesture.

In his ruling, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Mr. Yussuf Lasun, referred the bill to the Committees on Education and Services and Public Service Matters.

In his reaction, the National Deputy President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, Mr. Kelvin Nwankwo, said that the union was happy about the development.

Nwankwo said that the bill was very important to the Nigerian teachers.

“Come to think of it, how many states have recruited teachers in the last five years? At the end of the day, they will blame the teachers for not doing anything.

“In some schools, it is one teacher to 300 to 500 pupils or students; so there is need to extend the retirement age of teachers in public schools,” he said.

Buhari Breaks Silence On Controversial N30,000 Minimum Wage Endorsement

The Presidency has disclosed that there is no need for the controversy doing the round on the internet about the remarks made by President Muhammadu Buhari on the proposed new minimum wage.

Speaking on behalf of the president, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, in a statement issued on Thursday, said what the President said while receiving the report of the tripartite committee on minimum wage was very clear.

VON Nigeria quoted him as saying: “The Presidency is concerned over recurring reports alleging that President Muhammadu Buhari has reneged on earlier acceptance of the N30, 000 recommended as the new National Minimum Wage by the National Minimum Wage Tripartite Committee.

“These reports are contrary to what transpired on Tuesday when the committee presented its Report to the President. Responding, President Buhari, while acknowledging the concerns raised by government on affordability and Labour’s focus on meaningful increase, stated clearly in a speech, which was made available to the media:

“In a way, both arguments are valid. I want to assure you all that we will immediately put in place the necessary machinery that will close out these open areas…Our plan is to transmit an Executive Bill to the National Assembly for passage within the shortest possible time. I am fully committed to having a new National Minimum Wage Act in the very near future.

“As the Executive Arm commences its review of your submission, we will continue to engage you all in closing any open areas presented in this report. I, therefore, would like to ask for your patience and understanding in the coming weeks.”

Bear in mind that the president yesterday used his personal Twitter account to also speak on this:

“Nigerians on the other hand, however, pay so much on visa application, yet they get denied. The saddest part of it,” she said “is that these application fees which are on the high side, are not refundable.”

I’m so angry , pissed and frustrated .. been Denied severally and it always put me in a bad state…. UK – 3times
US – 2 times
CANADA- 1 time
The most annoying part is it’s non refundable application . Some even pay For fast tracking which it’s not a small change … All documents required are complete but you still have a way of saying NO. Like my last uk application , the refusal letter was totally different from what was in the application and I was like where did I state this one. I said I’m freelance and you still asking me for salary records after explaining in a full letter how the money in my account comes in with evidence from the companies I worked for . Shame .
Yah all visit our country without stress but making ours hell and have an embassy in our country :
SOME OF US CANT EVEN LIVE OUTSIDE NIGERIA .we just want to visit , explore and have fun . So sad * I think it’s fair enough to have a proper interview not that 1min interview claiming psychologist * I think it’s better to get a refund after refusal . At least 50%
* I think it’s cool to do a proper check on individuals
And so on .
PLS SHARE YOUR TAKE AND EXPERIENCE ON VISA APPLICATION.

Lai Mohammed Claims Nigerian Govt Spends N3.5 Million Monthly To Feed El-Zakzaky

The Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed has claimed that  the Federal Government spends N3.5 million monthly to feed the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, who has been detained by the government for over two years.

El-Zakzaky, the leader of the Shiite movement, has been detained since December 2015 after soldiers clamped down on his supporters killing at least 347 of them.

The army accused them of blocking a public road being used then by the army chief, Tukur Buratai.

But the minister, while issuing an update on the whereabouts and safety of the Shi’ites leader and his wife, made this comment while addressing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday.

“The issue about where he is, I think let’s keep it off record,” Mohammed said when asked about the whereabouts of Sheikh El-Zakzaky.

Speaking further, Mohammed said: “That he is in a residence, eating and I mean, it costs the government about N3.5 million every month to feed him,” Mohammed said to the amusement of the reporters as they responded with laughter.

Responding to the reactions of the reporters, the minister said: “honestly these are the facts,” stressing that “I asked” in reference to the feeding fee of the Shi’ites leader.

A video of Mr Mohammed making the claim while addressing some journalists has since gone viral.

He wrote, “On Sunday, November 4, at about 6am my car experienced a blowout, instinctively causing me to apply the brakes, which was the last thing I remembered.

“Eye witnesses said my vehicle spun out of control, somersaulted and collided with an oncoming vehicle. The impact of the collision caused my car to flip several times across the median. Luckily no lives were lost, but both vehicles were total write-offs.

Nevertheless, K.Brule, who regained consciousness afterwards in a hospital, was happy that despite the bills incurred in the hospital, he was alive.

“I praise and thank God for being faithful and for sparing our lives. Due to the nature of the crash the blame falls on me. I have no idea how I will pay the damages and hospital bills for the other party as I’m currently owing my own hospital but at least I’m alive to worry about these things.

“Please keep me in your prayers during these trying times. I may be hard to reach for a while as my phones were destroyed in the crash.”

Buhari’s Certificate And The Long Knives – Azu Ishiekwene

After former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party at the Port Harcourt convention in October, the party said it looked forward to an issues-based campaign and challenged the ruling All Progressives Congress to roll up its sleeves.

This piece was written by Azu Ishiekwene. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

There are many issues to debate with the APC whose promise of change is losing its appeal, but the last place I expected the opposition to launch its attack is on the West African School Certificate of President Muhammadu Buhari: it’s a waste of time and a troubling evidence of mediocrity.

In 2014 when this matter first came up, the public was genuinely interested in its authenticity because WASC is a minimum requirement in the electoral law for running for the office of president.

According to Nigeria’s electoral law, there are, at least, four basic requirements for contesting the office of President: 1) citizenship of Nigeria; 2) attainment of the age of 40; 3) membership of a political party and sponsorship by that party; and 4) possession and presentation of a WASC or its equivalent.

When doubts arose over Buhari’s WASC four years ago, PREMIUM TIMES sent an email to the University of Cambridge, which used to conduct the examination at the time, for verification.

Although Cambridge Assessment refused to give specific details of the content of the result, on the ground that the law only permits it to do so with the approval of the candidate, there was enough hint in the response to PREMIUM TIMES to suggest that Buhari’s claim was true.

In any case, it’s improbable that he would have been eligible for courses at the Defence Staff Services College in India in 1973 or the United States Army War College by simply wangling his way, regardless of basic or professional experience.

It’s a measure of the hubris that the public must endure in the forthcoming elections that the PDP should be looking for certificate forgers outside its own backyard and even press the matter to the point of distraction.

The party’s candidate in the just concluded governorship election in Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, was alleged to have hired a candidate to take his school certificate examination for him and might have invented an excellent result if he had not been arrested and charged to court.

Yet, at some point in the election, it looked like this same candidate was going to emerge winner, and voters did not seem to care, even if he was going to walk to the Government House on a road paved with forged certificates and echoing with shaku shaku music.

Something is obviously broken in a system, where PDP, the grandmaster of impunity, will now pose as the moral arbiter of a new dawn. Should they hold Buhari to account for the claim he made in his INEC form about his certificate being in the custody of the Military Board? By all means, yes. But in coming to equity, they should do so with clean hands, and a bit of common sense, even if it’s borrowed.

Next to Buhari’s file in which they’re attacking in INEC’s office over the purported absence of WASC, lies the file of the PDP’s own candidate, Atiku Abubakar, which contains some of the most shameful admissions of financial opacity, to put it mildly.

Atiku, their candidate, claimed in his form with INEC, that he earned N60.2 million in three years, and paid N10.8 million in taxes within the same period. After 16 years of running a country where tax collection was observed in the breach – except for the period under Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru – the PDP has obviously invented its own tax habits and rules, with generous exemption for its presidential candidate.

If this were not the case, it would have occurred to the party that under current tax laws, what Atiku filed is a crime. The tax law provides that any personal income at N3.2 million and above is taxed at 24 per cent; that means, if for the sake of humour, we assume that Atiku earned N60.2 million in three years as he claimed, he should have paid N18.06 million in taxes, and not N10.8 million.

As for how much Atiku really earns – or what he does from which he earns a living – we may never, ever know. How much he makes from Intels, Prodeco, Atiku Abubakar Farms, or ABTI Schools? We’ll never, ever know.

But there are a few things which we know, because he said them. Four years ago, for example, he said he subsidises his private university, the American University, with $1 million monthly. That subsidy now tops $3 million monthly.

If a man of such extraordinarily modest means, reputed to spend millions of dollars monthly, declares three-year income of N60.2 million and pays tax of N10.08 million, at least N8 million less than the face value of what he declared, that should raise some questions.

Maybe not in PDP circles where money is chicken feed. But voters ought to be interested in how those offering themselves for office made their money and whether tomorrow when they run after them to pay taxes, these folks also pay their fair share.

Atiku said he got his break as a Customs officer in 1971, when he took advantage of a hire purchase opportunity offered by SCOA motors to buy three Peugeot cars, which he put to commercial use. We believe him, just as surely as we believe that Buhari is too poor to afford the nomination form, but Atiku’s tax math is not adding up.

The candidates’ records filed with INEC is public document and fair game for scrutiny, including scrutiny by the political parties and the public. So, I understand PDP kicking up a fuss about Buhari’s certificate. The point, however, is that PDP being PDP, the party is in such a hurry to return to power, it assumes that we have all forgotten where its dead bodies are buried.

Well, one of them is sticking out in the tax returns of its presidential candidate, and it’s not looking good.

According to reports, Organised labour have threatened to go on an indefinite strike action if the Federal Government fails to approve the N30,000 minimum wage recommended by the tripartite committee set up by the President.
The secretary general of the Trade Union Congress, Musa Lawal, was reacting to comments made by the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed saying that the report of the tripartite committee was a mere recommendation said that organised labour was been pushed to the wall by the Federal Government.
Lawal added that the union had agreed to hold off its initial planned action because the Government expressed willingness to accept the report of the tripartite committee.
“They can say anything they want to say. Why were they panicky before? Why did they agree to the N30,000? They can call it a mere recommendation or whatever they want to call it but the important thing is that at the end of the day, if we do not get the N30,000, they know what we will do,” Lawal said.
