The Central Working Committee (CWC) of The Future Awards Africa has unveiled the list of honorees for the most coveted youth award on the continent, the Young Person of the Year – David ‘Davido’ Adeleke, Samson Itodo, Tomi Adeyemi, Nemitari Ajienka, and Dr. Mahmoud Maina.

This prize is awarded to a young person who has become a force for change, capturing the collective imagination of all Nigerians through their achievements, public image, and personal triumphs. An individual who has demonstrated intuition, innovation, and initiative and is not afraid to lead change in his/her industry.

The awards event which is set to hold on 16 December 2018 celebrates innovation among Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 31 (in the period of review) and acknowledges inspiring young people making a difference through social enterprise, social good, and creativity.

The Future Awards Africa 2018‎ is presented by The Future Project, Guaranty Trust Bank, and H20. The official hashtags for 2018 are #TFAA2018 and #NigeriasNewTribe.

See honorees profiles below:

Nemitari Ajienka (24)

Far too many people think the academia is boring and staid. This assumption has come from decades of exclusionary politics that have alienated young people of every generation from excelling through a complex web of financial quotas, interdepartmental politicking and the very nature of academia which demands that a person devote the brightest years of their lives in the pursuit of knowledge. Not many people are able to summon the sheer volumes of resolve it requires to take on this monumental challenge and succeed, and this is why Nemitari Ajienka is such an inspiration to young people everywhere.

At the age of 24, Ajienka was granted the status of lecturer at the Edge Hill University in the United Kingdom, the youngest lecturer to achieve this feat in the University. Ajienka’s feat only becomes more astounding when you consider that he also completed a bachelor’s degree, Masters and a PhD all in this time, excelling at every level. As a pioneer in computer science, Ajienka’s excellence and commitment to education is not only a feat of inestimable genius, it is also a source of inspiration to young Nigerians everywhere, discouraged by the tangential shift into entertainment and sports as the only viable routes to fame and success. Ajienka proves excellence can be had no matter what you choose to devote your life to.

Samson Itodo (32)

Politics in Nigeria is seen as a dirty game, and very few people step into the fray and come out the other end with their integrity intact and their objectives achieved. Samson Itodo is one of such vanguards. Itodo has been in politics for a long time, working and mobilizing young people at the grassroots level through the Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth and Advancement (YIAGA), a non-profit committed to serving as an alternative to political parties and providing a united front for young Nigerians to advocate and demand democratic governance. The non-profit uses research, capacity development through investments in human capital and advocating for policy change that betters the lives of Nigerians.

In 2016, Itodo, in collaboration with Hon. Tony Nwulu, helped sponsor the ‘Not Too Young To Run’ Bill, a piece of legislation that sought to challenge the pre-independence laws that set the ages for participation in federal, state and local government elections. The existing laws precluded younger people and offered basic expectations for eligible candidates. Under the leadership of Itodo, who used political think tanks, lobbying and citizen advocacy, YIAGA was able to push the bill through the Senate and eventually to the desk of the President, where it was signed as a landmark victory for all Nigerians. The trajectory of the 2019 elections has changed drastically thanks to the work of Itodo through ‘Not Too Young to Run’.

One thing is certain, Itodo has changed the course of Nigeria’s history and etched his name in the stars.

David ‘Davido’ Adeleke (26)

Few Nigerian artistes have experienced a comeback as enduring and fantastic as David Adeleke, the inimitable Davido. He released a slew of songs, led by the charismatic ‘Fall’ and ‘If’ which made the careers of half a dozen artistes and producers including DJ E-Cool and Teni the Entertainer and started a new label that signed Mayorkun and Peruzzi, now superstars in their own rights. Davido grew up, shedding his bad boy image and embracing fatherhood and a long-term love interest to the admiration of his adoring fanbase.

But Davido’s biggest triumphs in 2018 have been his personal and professional challenges. He forced the international media giant Viacom and its subsidiary BET to acknowledge the contributions of African artistes to global music by demanding that the winners of the BET ‘Best African Act’ be awarded their plaques on the main stage alongside their global contemporaries instead of quietly at a pre-event, and hosted a slew of sold out concerts across the world, promoting his Nigerian heritage and changing perceptions about the country and continent.

There are few ambassadors as worthy of Person of the Year as David Adeleke and we acknowledge and praise his growth.

Dr. Mahmoud Maina (32)

In the last decade, Nigeria has been forced by the worst of prevailing circumstances to come to terms with its failing healthcare system. It has also been forced to acknowledge the incredible effort its doctors have put in their craft, their resilience, and innovation in the face of a failed system and their endless commitment to saving every life. Dr. Stella Adadevoh was our turning point, and Dr. Mahmoud Maina is our way forward.

Dr. Maina is a researcher and scientist who is distinguishing himself in global medicine through his ground-breaking research in degenerative disease and how our understanding of these diseases can be enhanced through science. In 2018, Dr. Maina’s progressive research into Alzheimer’s disease, a degenerative disease that affects memory, unveiled complex proteins that contribute to the progress of the disease and how they can reverse the degeneration. Maina understands the challenges of other doctors in Africa to find funding for research and mentors other African scientists through his TrendInAfrica, an educational NGO that helps attract funding for the creation of world-class laboratories and research facilities across the continent. He created the Science Communication Hub in Nigeria, a platform that engages the public through science and his science outreach programmes connect scientists to students, teachers, and government officials.

He has been lauded with awards for his work, including the New Researcher Science Communication Award by in the Royal Society of Biology.

Tomi Adeyemi (25)

There has been a lot of discussion around the absence of black women of African descent in the science fiction and fantasy literary genres. So when a fantasy writer of Nigerian descent not only successful debuts a three-part fantasy series based in Nigeria and featuring two female protagonists, her work breaks many ceilings for women and inspires a new generation of Nigerian girls to indulge their imaginations and create their own worlds.

Tomi Adeyemi is only 25, but she is already a force to be reckoned with in the literary world. Her debut novel Children of Blood and Bone centres a hybrid of Yoruba culture and fantastic elements and repositions African features such as albinism and kinky hair as beautiful. Her three-part book series was sold for an unprecedented million dollar deal. The popularity of her work led to Fox 2000 adapting it into a film, with a seven-figure deal being reported. Tomi also teaches creative writing to the 4,500 people subscribed to her website, and her website was named as one of the 101 best websites for writers by Writer’s Digest.

Adeyemi’s book and her philosophies on literature are an important touchstone for Nigerian girls. Her success emphasizes that education and the opportunities it provides are invaluable if we are to raise a generation of girls who value their autonomy and want to pursue their dreams.

Kylian Mbappe Reveals How He Rejected Arsene Wenger’s Offer To Join Arsenal Before PSG Move

Kylian Mbappe has revealed how he rejected a move to Arsenal before joining PSG

Mbappe joined PSG on an initial loan deal back in the summer of 2017, with the move turning into a £163m permanent deal the following year.

Speaking to ‘France Football’, Mbappe revealed his admiration for former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, insisting that he acted gentlemanly even when Mbappe decided he preferred a move to the Parc des Princes over a move to the Emirates.

“I have not seen many people in this world being viewed in such a unanimous way,” he enthused.

“When the entirety of Europe gets on its knees in front of him to celebrate him, that certainly means something.

“A little while ago, before I signed for PSG, we were in contact in 2017. I chose a different direction but he wasn’t annoyed at me.”

With former manager Unai Emery now in charge of the ‘Gunners’, Mbappe revealed that he remains in touch with the Spaniard.

“I have a lot of respect for this man even if he did not succeed in Paris. He won titles before and I hope he wins them again after,” Mbappe insisted.

“I sent him a congratulatory message when he signed for Arsenal, and now I am following from afar.”

Neymar’s Diving Hard To Defend – Pele

Featured Image

Brazil legend Pele admitted it’s hard to defend Neymar from criticism over what is perceived as excessive simulation and has urged him to make the most of his ability.

Neymar came under fire for his on-field theatrics at the World Cup, where the ‘Selecao’ were beaten in the quarter-finals by Belgium.

Three-time World Cup winner Pele has spoken to his fellow Santos product about his actions, which he finds it tough to reconcile.

“It’s difficult to defend Neymar for all the things he does besides playing football. I spoke with him and reminded him of his ability,” he told ‘Folha de Sao Paulo’.

“He was unlucky because Brazil did not win the World Cup and he was singled out.

“I’ve been with him in Europe twice. We talked and I explained: ‘The God of football gave you the gift. What you do complicates it.’”

Pele believes Neymar is a better player than his fellow PSG forward Kylian Mbappe, who won the Best Young Player award as France triumphed at Russia 2018.

Mbappe became the first teenager to score a World Cup double since Pele in 1958 and his strike in the final saw him match another feat achieved by the legendary Brazilian.

“People compare me with Mbappe and there are similarities, right? But he is already 19. He won the World Cup,” said Pele, who was joined by Mbappe as the only teenagers to score in a World Cup final.

“I think Neymar is a more complete player than him, but in Europe everyone speaks more about Mbappe.”

There were concerns for Pele in January amid conflicting reports regarding his health after he pulled out of a scheduled appearance in the United Kingdom.

Offering an update, he said: “Thanks to God, I am well. I had three surgeries in the past years, but I’m not 100 per cent. I don’t feel any more pain, I feel more weakness.”

First daughter and senior White House adviser Ivanka Trump made the list for the second time as she came in at number 24, just one place behind Queen Elizabeth II.

“The first daughter and advisor to President Trump has become the de facto First Lady as her step-mother Melania prefers to avoid the limelight,” Forbes wrote as Melania was nowhere to be seen on the list.

For the first time, Forbes’ list also includes siblings: Anne and Susan Wojcicki, of 23andMe and YouTube, respectively.

Charly Boy: My Dear Father ‘Terrorised’ Us With Burden Of Bearing The Name Oputa

Charly Boy: My Dear Father ‘Terrorised’ Us With Burden Of Bearing The Name Oputa

Popular musician, Charly Boy, has revealed that while growing up, he romanced the thought of becoming a priest, largely due to the influence of his late father.

The singer turned activist, who made this known on Tuesday, December 4, at the 2018 Justice Oputa Annual Conference (JOAC) in Abuja, also recounted how his dad ‘terrorised’ them with the burden of bearing the name, Oputa.

He said: “I was an altar boy trying to live up to our father’s expectations, and I was fed with so much religiosity that I romanced the idea of becoming a priest as a teenager.

“Almost every morning, we attended morning mass which was compulsory, and confession meetings and Bible studies were regular.

“My dear father ‘terrorised’ us with the burden of bearing the name, Oputa, and almost every day was a sermon and lecture in our household on why we must protect the Oputa name.

“It was pounded into our skulls that a good name is worth more than all the billions in the bank; values that have become extinct in today’s Nigeria.”

Charly Boy eulogised his father, a late supremecourt judge popularly known as Socrates of the Nigerian judiciary.

He recounted the rigorous discipline he received under his father’s watch.

“As a teenager, I saw my father as overbearing, bullish, brash, cantankerous and outdated,” he said.

“His overdose of discipline, strong moral value and spirituality was suffocating, and I wondered why I was the most punished amongst my siblings.

“Discipline was enforced in our house as if we were in the army and any time we did something wrong my father never spared the rod.”

“For 14yrs before he passed on, my father lived in my house, and most evenings we talked about the apparent injustices and inequalities that abound in Nigeria.

“He kept pointing out the direction, the practice and way of life that leads to true happiness. One of his popular teachings was that wealth does not guarantee happiness and that wealth is impermanent.

“That in every country people suffer, whether rich or poor, but only those who seek to understand the true meaning of life can find true happiness.”

Injury news ahead of Wolves?

“No. I spoke with the doctor 10 minutes ago, but we have no injuries at the moment. Then, of course, we had a little problem with Kovacic in the last match, and also with Alonso. But, for the doctor, they are able to play. Now we have to see the last training session just in order to understand if there is somebody tired after the match.”

Happy with Azpilicueta’s new deal?

“Azpilicueta is important for the staff, for the coach, for the team-mates. It’s very important for this club, I think. I’m very happy with the new contract for him, and for the club.”

What more can Ruben Loftus-Cheek do to earn a Premier League starting place?

“He played some matches in the Europa League and the League Cup, and he played five or six matches in the Premier League without starting, I think. He is, at the moment, very important for us.

“He had some problems to understand very well what I wanted, but now he is improving and, in the last two matches, I was really very happy with him.”

Will he head out in January?

“No. I want him to stay with me, to stay with us. So I think that there is no chance [of him leaving].”

Have you made an official offer for Christian Pulisic?

“Pusilic is a Borussia Dortmund player, and I don’t want to talk about a player of another club. It’s not professional, I think.”

What do you expect from Wolves?

“I expect a very difficult match because they are a very technical team. They have a lot of players who are very technical. So they were unlucky in the last few matches, I think, but it’s not really very easy to play there.”

Jurgen Klopp’s reaction after the Liverpool game, would you do that?

I don’t know, I don’t know. You have to understand the situation: the derby, the goal in the last minute, maybe in the last seconds of the match. It can happen. It’s better not to do something like that, but I can understand him.”

What were the injuries for Kovacic and Alonso?

“Ankle knock (for Kovacic). Alonso had a little problem with his back.”

Does that explain why Alonso was below par against Fulham?

“I don’t know. I don’t know. You cannot… I think you cannot say that after the match. That you’re injured or able to play.”

Does he need a rest?

“Maybe during the match, the back got worse, this is possible, I don’t know. I want to speak to him. But he didn’t play very well. I know very well this, but I think Alonso knows very well this, also. It can happen. Today we will see the reaction, we will see the situation with the back. For the doctor, the back is better.”

Does Alvaro Morata need tough love or an arm around him?

“I don’t know. I have to understand very well what he needs. But I am available to do everything. But I think that Morata, in the last month, played well. He scored five goals. He needs only continuity, I think. He needs confidence and confidence and confidence. So I think we need only to have continuity in the scoring.”

He seems to be hard on himself when he misses a chance…

“Maybe, maybe. Now he is 25, I think. He can change. But the characteristics of his character are this. So he has only to stay calm because, in the last match, he missed the goal only because he wanted to score too much.”

Do you want David Luiz and Cesc Fabregas to follow Azpilicueta and sign a new deal?

“Si [Yes], I spoke with the club one month ago about this. I know very well that it’s not easy, but I think that we can do a new deal for both.”

Why do you want those two to stay?

“Because they are very important players for us. Because, on the other hand, it’s very difficult to find a centre-back for this level, and it’s very difficult to find a central midfielder technically like Fabregas. And so I think they have to stay with us.”

Is them both being over 30 a concern?

“The deal is very difficult for this reason, I think. Because the club wants a short contract, and the players want a long contract. So it’s difficult for this reason. But I think, at the end, we can find a solution.”

Do you need leaders in the side?

“I think that David and Cesc are leaders. And so I think it’s very important for me, for the staff, and also for their team-mates that they stay with us. I know the difficulties of the new deal, as I said before. The problem is only one year, two years or three/four years for the new contract. But I think the club will be able to find the right solution.”

Chelsea Trying To Renew Eden Hazard Contract Every Week – Maurizio Sarri

Eden Hazard’s representatives are speaking with Chelsea on a weekly basis over a possible new contract, according to The Blues manager Maurizio Sarri.

Eden Hazard, has been linked with a move to Real Madrid in 2019 and stated only last month that it would be a “dream” for him to play for the Santiago Bernabeu club.

He has two years left on his contract, but his advisors have already begun talks over the prospect of an extension, Sarri has claimed.

The Blues boss now hopes for a successful outcome in those dealings, provided that Hazard wants to stay at Stamford Bridge.

“I know very well that there are discussions between the club and the manager of Eden every week I think, so if there is something new, the club will call me immediately,” he said.

“I want Eden here, but I want him here if he wants to stay here. You know very well that Eden is very important for us, like every special player. He’s important for his club.

“It’s up to him, I think. I think the club is available to sign a new contract immediately, but it’s up to him if he wants to renew or not.”
