Reason For Leicester City Helicopter Crash Revealed

Featured Image

A special investigative report released on Thursday by the Air Accidents Investigations Branch has revealed that the helicopter crash which killed Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha occurred following a disconnection between the mechanism linking the pilot’s pedals with the tail rotor blades.

The AAID report declared: “The evidence gathered to date shows that the loss of control of the helicopter resulted from the tail rotor actuator control shaft becoming disconnected from the actuator lever mechanism.”

“The initiating cause and exact sequence of the failure that resulted in the loss of tail rotor control is being investigated as a priority…The AAIB is working with relevant organisations to identify any other factors that may have contributed to the loss of tail rotor control.”

Leicester City CEO,  two members of his staff, Nursara Suknamai and Kaveporn Punpare, as well as pilots Eric Swaffer and Izabela Roza Lechowicz were killed in the October 27 crash outside of the King Power Stadium.

The AW169 helicopter reached an altitude of approximately 430ft before plummeting to the ground near Leicester City’s King Power Stadium.

The AAIB says that it will continue to investigate other factors which could have led to the mechanical failure, saying that they will report any significant developments as the investigation progresses.

BREAKING: House Of Reps Approve June 12 As Nigeria’s New Democracy Day

House Of Reps Approve June 12 As Nigeria’s New Democracy Day

Lawmakers of the House of Representatives on Thursday, December 6, approved June 12 as Nigeria’s new Democracy Day.

The approval was done today while considering a report on “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Public Holidays Act, Cap. P40, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to bring the Act in tandem with the current realities and exigencies of the modern times and to declare June, 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria and for Related Matters”.

Considering the report at the plenary, the lawmakers approved the amendments to three clauses ‎in the Act, as recommended in the report.

Before now, May 29 is always observed as Democracy Day since 1999.

But President Muhammadu Buhari, last year declared that June 12 would now be marked as Democracy Day and a day to handover power.

He also honoured the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Moshood Abiola, with the highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic.

The lawmakers saw the need to give the declaration a legal backing, hence the introduction of the bill by Edward Pwajok (Plateau, APC).

The late Abiola won the freest election conducted in Nigeria’s history on June 12, 1993 but the election was annulled by the military junta of General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, IBB.

For decades, activists and human rights bodies have been protesting and canvassing the recognition of Abiola by making June 12 Democracy Day instead of the May 29 instituted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Chelsea Manager Maurizio Sarri Worried By His Players Performance Vs Wolverhampton

Featured Image

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri slammed his players arrogance after they threw away a one-goal lead to lose 2-1 to Wolverhampton at Molineux on Wednesday.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s deflected strike got the ‘Blues’ off to the perfect start in the Black Country, only for second-half goals from Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota to completely turn the game around.

Speaking after the game, Sarri slammed his side’s attitude, questioning why they decided to play completely differently in the last 35 minutes of the game.

“Of course, after this match we lost confidence but maybe it is better because sometimes my players show me they have too much confidence,” he fumed.

“It is more important to talk about our attitude after the first goal. We were not the same team as before, we were another team.

“Maybe it was important for the result but not for me. I have to understand why the team was suddenly another team because we were in control of the match.

“I thought we played very well for 55 minutes. After the first goal, that was an accident because we were in control of the match, we were suddenly another team, without our distances and without our football.

“I am very worried but not for the result, for the fact that we did not react to the first goal of the opponent. We didn’t react at all so I am really very worried for this, not the result.”

Following a strong start to the season, defeat at Molineux means Chelsea now drop down to fourth, with Sarri admitting that a title challenge is now probably beyond them.

“As I said before, Manchester City is in another category. Manchester City at the moment is not in our category. We have to play and we have to fight to be in the top four, I think,” he admitted.

“The result is very difficult for this because I know very well in every match you need points. In Serie A, in the last championship, I lost with 91 points so I know very well that in every match we need to gain points.

“It is very difficult, the result, for staying in the top four.”

Mario Balotelli Blasts AC Milan Fans On Instagram

Featured Image

Mario Balotelli has accused some AC Milan fans of lacking respect and gratitude following their derisory response to rumours linking him with a move back to the club

Mario Balotelli is in his third season with French club Nice, although he is yet to register a goal in 2018-19.

Speculation began to circulate recently that Balotelli could complete a move back to the Rossoneri, where he spent two spells either side of an ultimately unsuccessful switch to Liverpool.

That talk was met with scorn by some sections of the Milan faithful, prompting Balotelli to post a riposte via an Instagram story.

“It is nice to see so many Milan supporters who would not like my unlikely come back to Milan,” he wrote.

“It’s fine, one day you are needed and another day you are not. It is important to not have regrets.

“I have not planned any transfer so far.

“I wrote that because I want to highlight how there is no gratitude and no respect from people I will always love.”

French Ligue 1 Match Between Thierry Henry’s Monaco And Patrick Vieira’s Nice Postponed Due To Anti-government Protest

Featured Image

French Ligue 1 derby between Monaco and Nice has been postponed amid security concerns about anti-government protests across the country.

It’s the third match postponed amid fears of protest violence. The others are Paris Saint-Germain against Montpellier and Toulouse against Lyon.

The Monaco-Nice match had been scheduled for Friday. The league says it was postponed at the request of the Monaco palace and authorities in the French region that surrounds the tiny principality. It says the matches will be rescheduled.

France’s government is deploying extra security around the country amid threats of new protests on Saturday. Recent demonstrations against fuel tax rises and other grievances have resulted in rioting, looting and hundreds of injuries.

The Cote d’Azur derby was due to see Monaco take on a Nice side coached by Patrick Vieira, Henry’s former teammate at Arsenal and the French national side.

Henry oversaw just his second win in 10 games in charge of struggling Monaco as they beat Amiens 2-0 away on Tuesday with a brace of penalties by Radamel Falcao, but the 2017 champions remain in the bottom three.

Christmas: NNPC Assures Abundant Fuel Supply Nationwide, Stocks 170Million Litres Of Petrol

In the wake of the threats issued by oil marketers that it will shut down depots over unpaid subsidy – which may likely cause scarcity of petrol – the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has assured Nigerians that it will make the product abundantly available across the country.

The apex oil firm also said it had over 170 million litres of PMS in stock at some of its depots across the country following successful rehabilitation of the facilities along with connecting pipelines to forestall dependence on private sector depots.

Fuel Crisis Looms As Marketers Give FG 7-Day Ultimatum To Pay N800b Subsidy Debts

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Joseph Akinlaja, said this on Wednesday during an oversight visit to the NNPC headquarters in Abuja.

Nigerian Guardian quoted him as saying that the corporation would ensure that Nigerians travel effortlessly at this period of the year.

He said: “We are impressed by the presentation and we are sure there will be no war room here again because of products scarcity. You have done very well and I’m happy that Nigerians are going to travel effortlessly at this period of the year.”

The marketers had threatened to shut down their depots if government failed to pay the subsidy arrears owned them, a situation, which could trigger scarcity of petroleum products.

Also speaking, the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, reassured Nigerians of the corporation’s preparedness to ensure zero-scarcity of petroleum products during the festive season and beyond.

There Would Be No Fuel Scarcity In Nigeria This Festive Period – House Of Reps

Featured Image
The House of Representatives’ committee on Petroleum (Downstream) has expressed confidence for the measures put in place by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to avert fuel supply shortage, and believe the measures would be successful this year, according to reports.
The Committee added that this was due to efforts that went into the planning and execution of the zero-fuel scarcity strategy by the national oil firm and its subsidiaries. This was disclosed by the chairman of the committee, Joseph Akinlaja during a visit to the NNPC headquarters in Abuja.
This comes as the NNPC announced on Thursday, December 6, that it unveiled Nigeria’s multi-billion dollar investment opportunities in the deep-offshore frontiers at the 10th World Energy Capital Assembly in London, United Kingdom. The group general manager, Group Public Affairs Division (NNPC), Ndu Ughamadu said in a statement that the House committee commended the corporation on the strategies deployed so far to make petroleum products available to Nigerians throughout the end of year festivities and beyond.
Akinlaja said: “We are impressed by the presentation and we are sure that there will be no war room here again because of products scarcity. You have done very well and I’m happy that Nigerians are going to travel effortlessly at this period of the year”. On the threat by major and independent petroleum products marketers to ground the sector due to unpaid subsidy arrears, the committee chairman appealed to the Federal Government to do everything within its powers to pay up the arrears to forestall any crisis. Meanwhile Maikanti Baru, NNPC’s group managing director, reassured Nigerians of the corporation’s preparedness to ensure zero-scarcity of petroleum products during the festive season and beyond.

Nigeria Rated Third Most Terrorised Country In The Word

Nigeria Rated Third Most Terrorised Country In The Word

Nigeria has been rated the third most terrorised country in the world, according to the 2018 Global Terrorism Index.

The report, which was released on Wednesday, ranked Africa’s most populous nation only below Iraq and Afghanistan, both in first and second positions respectively.

‘Scores Killed’ As Violence Erupts In Cross River Communities

It blamed the spate of terrorism in Nigeria and the “increase in violence involving Fulani extremists even as deaths committed by Boko Haram are falling”.

The report, however, noted that when compared to the peak of “terrorist deaths” in 2014, “the largest falls in the number of deaths occurred in Iraq, Nigeria, and Pakistan, with falls of 6,466, 5,950, and 912 deaths respectively”.

“Boko Haram, once the world’s deadliest terror group, has experienced a significant decline since its peak in 2014. However, the group remains the most active terrorist organisation in Nigeria and until 2017 was the deadliest terror group in sub-Saharan Africa,” the report said.

“Nigeria’s counterterrorism response in combatting Boko Haram has been interrupted by the emergence of other extremist groups, most notably the Fulani herder extremists.

“The Fulani herder extremists have attacked civilians and military forces in the country. However, the sizeable drop in deaths and terror incidents since 2014 indicate the success of Nigeria’s Civilian Join Task Force and international coalitions.

“Alongside its counterinsurgency plan, the Nigerian government also struggles with negotiations and reintegration efforts regarding its long-term strategy to deal with Boko Haram and its associates.”

Strike: FG Set New Date For Fresh Talks With ASUU

The federal government of Nigeria on Wednesday said it would be holding a meeting with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on December 10, to find a lasting solution to issues leading to the ongoing strike embarked upon by the union.

The Minister of Labour and Empowerment, Chris Ngige, said this in a statement signed by the Director of Press at the ministry, Samuel Olowookere.

BREAKING: ASUP Embarks On Nationwide Strike On December 12

In the statement, the minister also responded to a statement credited to Femi Falana (SAN), where he described the no-work-no-pay policy of the government as illegal.

Ngige said every policy of the government was backed by the provision of the International Labour Organisation, stressing that while ILO backed strike, it also recognised provision to withhold wages.

The statement said, “The minister had earlier in the exercise of his powers sent back the conciliation to the Federal Ministry of Education as he noticed during the first meeting that both parties have not exhausted the internal conciliation mechanism. Knowing that ASUU and her members are on essential services as contained in the Trade Dispute Act, the minister has therefore directed that the matter is re-apprehended back into his ministry to avoid unnecessary meddlesomeness by external interlopers as well as to ensure speedy resolution of all issues to enable ASUU to call off the strike.

“Hence, the minister in the exercise of his powers in section 5 of the Trade Dispute Act has re-apprehended the dispute and invited all parties to a meeting. By this, all further discussions between the Ministry of Education and ASUU will now recommence at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

“A meeting has been convened for Monday, December 10, 2018, at the Conference Room of the Minister of Labour and Employment. The ministry will also further investigate the media report credited to Mr Falana to ascertain whether he actually quoted those Supreme Court judgments, knowing full well that they are tangential and that they neither anchor nor dwell on provisions of section 43 of Trade Dispute Act T8 ( LFN 2004) before it will take further necessary action.”

Arsenal Boss Unai Emery Admits His Players Lost Control Against Manchester United

Featured Image

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has suggested that his players need to improve their game management after twice squandering a lead in a 2-2 draw with Manchester United

Arsenal went ahead in both the first and second half, but The Red Devils equalised within four minutes after the opener and less than two minutes after the second.

Emery has said that he is “very proud” of his team’s display at Old Trafford, but feels that the North London outfit failed to maintain control of the fixture. The Spaniard is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: “I think we controlled the game, the second half better than the first. We could have won this match in certain moments, but they equalised very quickly after both our goals.

“We need to improve defensively, but we need to have balance and not lose our attacking chances. We perhaps lost a bit of control there but we created lots of chances after 2-2 and I am very proud of our performance. We wanted to win but we can feel this point is good.

“Sead Kolasinac came off with his head down but I said to him he had a very good match in attack and you have to be positive and learn from this match.”

Manchester United Manager Jose Mourinho Hails His Players Fighting Spirit Vs Arsenal

Featured Image

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has claimed that he could feel the “little panic” when Arsenal entered his side’s defensive third at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Manchester United went into the game having failed to win in three Premier League outings, but Mourinho watched his players twice come from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against the Gunners.

Mourinho has praised his team’s fighting spirit, but the Portuguese has hinted that he had been left concerned with the confidence of his backline. The 55-year-old is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: “We scored four goals and drew 2-2. As always we made mistakes and we paid for the mistakes. Today was more the same, but with great spirit and people ready to have a go and fight hard, it was a credit to the team.

“They went to the limit and were really tired. Some of them had not played all season, Chris Smalling playing in very difficult condition, but Arsenal were only dangerous when we lost the ball in bad areas.
“This is a performance of big soul and heart, [Marcus] Rashford, just to give a name, gave everything for the shirt. But even from our bench you could feel the little panic when the ball comes to our defensive third.”

Gazidis oversaw a period of great change in North London; having appointed the successor to Arsene Wenger, after the long serving manager caled time on his 22 year ‘Gunners’ career.

“It’s a great honour to have been chosen to lead AC Milan into a new era as its chief executive,” Gazidis said in a video published by the Rossoneri.

“I’d like to assure the club’s millions of fans all over the world that I will work with my heart and soul to do the best job that I can.

“To achieve what we all want for this great football club, the hard work must start now, and it will require team work, both on and off the pitch.

“I’m extremely excited about the opportunities ahead. Although the journey will be challenging, I’m confident that, together, we can bring AC Milan back to where it belongs.”

Russian Footballers Pavel Mamaev And Alexander Kokorin Jail Time Increased

Russian footballers Pavel Mamaev and Alexander Kokorin will spend a further two months in prison after a Moscow court extended their detention for assault on Wednesday.

“The court has deliberated and grants the request of investigators to extend the detention…until February 8, 2019,” said judge Alexei Krivoruchko, quoted by Russian news agencies.

Both players committed a series of assaults on Monday, October 8, at the end of a night out in Moscow.

They attacked the driver of a television host and damaged her Mercedes. The driver was hospitalised with injuries and a criminal probe was opened.

Then they were caught on video attacking two Russian trade ministry officials in an upscale Moscow cafe.

One of the officials, Denis Pak, an ethnic Korean, was hit with a chair while eating.

On October 11, the two footballers were ordered to be detained for two months until December 8, pending their trial for “hooliganism”.

Both are Russian internationals though Kokorin, a Zenit Saint Petersburg forward, last played for the national side in late 2017, while Krasnodar midfielder Mamaev was last selected in 2016.

Two other defendants, including Kirill Kokorin, the brother of the Zenit footballer, also saw their detention extended for two months.

The attacks caused outrage in Russia, especially as Mamaev and Kokorin have been in trouble before over a night out.

The Russian Football Union suspended the pair in July 2016 after a video emerged from a Monte Carlo nightclub in which Mamaev and Kokorin allegedly spent $296,000 (258,000 euros) on a champagne-fuelled party following Euro 2016, where Russia flopped.

The federal government of Nigeria has revealed when the Lagos-Ibadan railway will become operational.

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who said this, disclosed that he has directed the Chinese Civil Engineering Company (CCECC), the contractors handling the Lagos-Ibadan railway, to ensure that the train becomes operational before February 2019.

Amaechi stated this on Tuesday during the monthly inspection of the Lagos-Ibadan rail project in Papalando, Ogun state.

According to him, the contractors must ensure that the tracks and bridges were completed and the train must make transport sense.

His words:

“There must be train on the tracks before February. It doesn’t matter when, but there must be a train on the track that makes transport sense.”

“What I mean by transport sense is that, it must be able to carry passengers from Abeokuta if not up-to Ibadan, we have agreed that everybody must work towards it.”

“The next inspection is on Dec. 18 and that is two weeks from now.”

“Before, we used to have it once in a month but now it will be twice in a month to ensure that, that is achieved.”

“So, we will be back here to ensure that what we have agreed to today will be implemented. The work is progressing rapidly, the weather is no longer an issue, the elements were an issue before but now it is no longer an issue.”

“You should know that on the 18th, we would have started campaign, the president has emphasised that we must build infrastructure.”

JAMB Grants Varsity Admission To 470,000 Candidates As 2019 UTME Registration Begins In January

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has confirmed it will commence registration for the 2019/ 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in January.

The Chairman of the governing Board, Dr. Emmanuel Ndukwe announced the new date to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, during a ceremony to celebrate some staff of the board who retired recently.

Some unverified report had claimed that JAMB would begin registration in December. But JAMB debunked it as fake news.

The registration fee is N3,500 as approved by the Federal Government recently.

Ndukwe explained that the reduction followed recommendations made by management and board of JAMB to the government because it was becoming difficult for some parents to raise the N5,000 currently charged by the board.

While commending the government for approving the reduction, Ndukwe said that the reduction may affect the board’s remittance to the federal government in the coming year.

“You are aware that the federal government has reduced the cost of JAMB forms from N5,000 to N3,500 but it is going to take effect from next year.

“Therefore, if we start selling the forms today, we will still sell at the cost of N5,000 because the approval does not cover for now, that is why we have shifted the sale of the forms to any date from first of January.

“It is a very good move from the federal government based on our recommendations.

” Even though we are returning money to the coffers of the Federal Government, our primary objective is not just to make money.

” That money is coming from somewhere and it is difficult for some people to raise that money and pay for the forms, even though JAMB form is among the cheapest in the whole world,” he said.

Ndukwe also said that the 2018/ 2019 admissions had so far been offered to 470,000 candidates while adding that the process, was ongoing.

He added that the board would fully implement the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) in its subsequent process of admissions as it was “the best thing that will happen to education in Nigeria.”

” If any child is qualified, CAPS system will guarantee that he or she is admitted.

CAPS will come into full operation from 2019. You don’t need to know anybody to have admission and that is our mission now,” he added.
