Marcos Alonso scored an 85th minute winner against Slavia Prague
Despite seven changes to the team that waltzed past West Ham on
Monday night and a late goal from Marcos Alonso, Chelsea were still
clearly feeling the effects of a London derby in their boots.
The difference in performance level is even more stark when one of those players taken out of front line duty is Eden Hazard.
The little Belgian dynamo was supposed to be rested last night in preparation for Sunday’s difficult trip to Liverpool.
Having single-handedly destroyed The Hammers in one of his most brilliant performances to date he was certainly due a night off.
But Sarri was forced to abandon his plan and bring his best player by
miles off the bench after less than an hour to liven things up.
Even then they were lucky to get out of town and home to face next week’s second leg still on level terms let alone with their noses in front
It is maybe more than coincidence that the goal which puts Chelsea in
command of the return game in London next Thursday was a combination of
Willian and left back Alonso.
