Justice Onnoghen’s Conviction Not To Be Celebrated – EFCC Counsel

Featured Image

A lawyer and EFCC counsel, Mr. Wahab Shittu, has said that former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, might fight a protracted legal battle against the CCT’s conviction.

Shittu had reacted to Thursday’s conviction of ex-CJN Onnoghen of breach of code of conduct for public officers.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Code of Conduct Tribunal chaired by Danladi Umar convicted Onnoghen, 68, and ordered his immediate removal as the CJN.

The CCT stripped him of all offices he occupied, such as the Chairman of the National Judicial Council and Chairman of the Federal Judicial Service Commission.

The tribunal also ordered the forfeiture of money in five accounts which Onnoghen failed to declare as part of his assets.

The tribunal also ordered that he should not hold any public office for 10 years.

In an interview with NAN, Mr. Wahab Shittu, said, “I believe that the Code of Conduct Tribunal made its own pronouncement, but that is not the end of the matter.

“I see Onnoghen exercising his constitutional right of appeal; the matter might be protracted and get up to the Supreme Court.

“It is a sad commentary on our judiciary, as no one should celebrate what has happened in this situation where the Number One judge in the country has found himself in this kind of predicament.

“It does not call for celebration, it calls for sober reflection and deep concern.

“I want to reserve further comments until the machinery of justice is fully exhausted, because I feel the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court will make further pronouncements,” Shittu said.

Ronaldo Makes Transfer Demand After Juventus’ Champions League Exit

Featured Image

Cristiano Ronaldo is demanding a major overhaul at Juventus, following Tuesday’s shock Champions League defeat against Ajax, Gazzetta dello Sport reports.

Juventus claimed a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam and threw away a lead at home to lose 2-1.

Ronaldo, who won three Champions League titles in succession with Real Madird and appeared in eight consecutive semi-finals, is furious with Juve’s capitulation and unhappy with the rigid tactics employed by manager Max Allegri.

The 34-year-old arrived last summer in a €112million deal and was expected to guarantee the Serie A champions’ quest to win the trophy.

Defeat on Tuesday, however, has left Ronaldo devastated and he is now expecting a Juventus’ hierarchy to oversee a major rebuilding process in the summer to bolster and ageing squad. Paulo Dybala could be sold for up to €100m, to fund a move for the player dubbed ‘the new Ronaldo’, Benfica’s Joao Felix.

Matthijs de Ligt who netted the winner in Turin, is also high on Juve’s wanted list, as well as Lyon’s all-action midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.

Champions League Exit Will Not Change Pep Guardiola’s Support Of VAR

Featured Image

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola insisted VAR does produce “fair football” despite a cruel Champions League quarter-final exit on away goals to Tottenham after a pulsating tie ended 4-4 on aggregate.

City were 4-3 victors in Wednesday’s second leg, but for the third straight season failed to reach the last four under Guardiola as two big VAR reviews went in Spurs’ favour.

Firstly, Fernando Llorente’s decisive goal 17 minutes from time stood despite the ball appearing to clip the Spaniard’s hand on its way into the net.

Then deep into stoppage time, Raheem Sterling had the strike that would have sealed his hat-trick and seen City through ruled out after Sergio Aguero was shown to be offside in the build-up.

“I support VAR. It’s just to see the goal from Llorente is a handball. From one angle looks like handball, from the angle the referee saw it doesn’t,” said Guardiola.

“I’m fine for the fair football, for the fair decisions. If it’s offside, it’s offside. In the future, even the present, it will be fair.”

Elimination ended City’s quest for a quadruple and Guardiola lamented a series of costly errors across both games after Aguero also missed a penalty in the first leg, that saw his side bow out to a side 16 points behind them in the Premier League.

“It’s tough. We were close to going through, it’s cruel, but we have to accept it,” added Guardiola.

“The mistakes in this competition punish you a lot. Unfortunately, it was a bad end for us.”

Unlike Guardiola, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has previously been a critic of VAR, but believes the decisions to award City a penalty in the first leg and not punish Fernandinho for a clash with Harry Kane balanced themselves out over the tie.

“You have to trust the VAR when it is against or for you,” said Pochettino. “The decision to include VAR in football is going to change the game.”

And the Argentine labelled his players as “heroes” for reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup for just the second time in their history after a season in which they have not signed a single player and played the majority of the campaign at a temporary home in Wembley.

“On this type of night, this type of victory, only I can feel proud. I feel they are heroes. With all the circumstances to be in the semi-finals of the Champions League they deserve a lot of praise.”

Guardiola’s decision to not start Kevin de Bruyne in the first leg will be further questioned as the Belgian bagged a hat-trick of assists to take City to the brink of the last four.

The first set up the first of four goals in 11 minutes as Sterling opened the scoring.

However, Spurs struck back twice in three minutes as Son Heung-min’s double took his tally for the season to 20.

Yet, with Kane expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season, Pochettino has another selection headache with Son suspended for the first leg of Spurs’ semi-final against Ajax.

A kamikaze opening had another twist as Bernardo Silva’s effort deflected off Danny Rose and wrong-footed Hugo Lloris at his near post to bring City level on the night.

By the midway point of the first half, the hosts were back in front as Bernardo and De Bruyne played creators once more and Sterling finished off a low cross at the back post.

Spurs’ hopes of holding on to their advantage on away goals suffered another blow when Moussa Sissoko was forced off with an injury.

Pochettino chose attack as the best form of defence by replacing the midfielder with Llorente in what proved to be a decisive change.

De Bruyne had his third assist on the hour mark as he surged through midfield before timing his pass for Aguero to perfection and the Argentine rifled past Lloris.

Having gone ahead for the first time in the tie, Guardiola soon sent on Fernandinho to restore some sense of control, but City has pegged back again as an incredible tie swung back in Tottenham’s favour.

Kieran Trippier’s corner was bundled in by Llorente, but there was controversy as the ball seemed to hit the striker’s arm on its way in.

After a VAR check, though, Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir stood by his original decision and the goal stood.

And VAR went against City again deep into stoppage time as delirium soon turned to disbelief inside the Etihad when what would have been a hat-trick for Sterling was ruled out.

Virgil van Dijk reveals Liverpool’s plans to stop Lionel Messi

Featured Image

Liverpool defender, Virgil van Dijk admits Liverpool will have to be at their best to stop Lionel Messi in the Champions League semi-finals.

The Reds will face Barcelona in the last four after seeing off Porto in the second leg of their quarter-final tie on Wednesday night.

Messi scored twice in Barca’s 3-0 victory over Manchester United earlier this week and Liverpool will have to be at their best to stop him.

Jurgen Klopp insisted his focus was on Sunday’s trip to Cardiff when asked about facing Messi following the win.

But Van Dijk delved a little deeper when posed with the same question.

I don’t know, we’ll see. It’s going to be a great match-up for all of us,” he told Viasport Fotball.

“It’s about doing it all together, it’s never 1vs1, it’s never just me against a particular striker.

“It’s always us against everyone and I think that’s the only way we can defend well.

“And it’s going to be very hard and I think he’s the best player in the world but we’ll see.”

The Reds will come up against former Anfield favourites Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho for the first time in the last four clash.

Coutinho left Liverpool for Barca last January while Suarez moved to the Nou Camp in the summer of 2014.

“For these two boys, it is very special, because they are Liverpool legends,” the Reds boss said.

“But I don’t think it will be a friendly game, we have to fight and work and they will do that as well.

“It is a wonderful game, Liverpool vs Barcelona in the semi-finals. Now let’s try to do the best there and we will see what happens.”

Liverpool Release New Balance Home Kit For 2019/20 Season

Featured Image

Liverpool have released their new home kit for the 2019/20 season.

With a design to celebrate 100 years of one of the Reds’ and English footballs most successful managers – Bob Paisley OBE – the strip sees the return of pinstripes to the Reds’ home shirt.

Paisley enjoyed considerable success at Liverpool; in the 1970s and 80s, capturing six league crowns and three European Cups.

During that era, Liverpool took to donning a pinstriped number and will be reverting back to that style after embracing an iconic design from suppliers New Balance.

General Manager of New Balance Football, Kenny McCallum has said: “We’re extremely excited and proud to reveal the New Balance Liverpool FC Home Kit.

“Bob Paisley’s incredible legacy was the ultimate inspiration for the 2019/20 strip in what would have been his 100th year.

“We hope this design will bring success to the club as it did when Paisley was manager.”

Liverpool will be hoping to compete for more major honours when gracing their new kit in Premier League, Champions League and domestic cup outings next season.

Talismanic defender Virgil van Dijk has said of the design: “This year’s home kit is incredibly strong.

“I’m really looking forward to wearing it as we continue to build upon the club’s illustrious history and this season’s success.”

Liverpool have said on the club’s official website:  “Revealed as part of the launch of the Reds’ New Balance home kit for the next campaign on Thursday morning, the goalkeeper is set to switch from his current No. 13 to No.1 at the beginning of 2019-20.

“Alisson inherits the iconic number from fellow stopper Loris Karius, who is currently on a two-year loan with Besiktas.

“The 2019-20 Liverpool home goalkeeper strip comes in black with striking gold detail and has been designed in line with the outfield players’ jerseys for next season.”

Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firminho and Van Dijk were on the scoresheet as Wednesday’s 4-1 win in Porto secured a last-four meeting between the Premier League leaders and Barcelona.

Pep Guardiola Reveals Why His Team Lost To Tottenham

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola appeared gutted to see his side eliminated from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage yet again, with VAR confirming a late goal for Tottenham while ruling out what would have been a late winner for Manchester City on Wednesday.

City came into the night trailing 1-0 from the first leg and needing to win by two clear goals following an early onslaught that saw Spurs bag two away goals before half-time as the side’s split five goals in the first 21 minutes of the second leg.

Sergio Aguero’s second-half strike had City out in front once again before VAR decisions took over in the closing stages.

First it was a goal for Fernando Llorente, confirmed by VAR despite the hint of handball, putting Spurs back in front in the tie on away goals, before Raheem Sterling’s stoppage-time strike, which would have been a winner for City, was ruled out for offside after being checked.

The loss in the tie ends City’s chase for a quadruple, and Guardiola was not pleased with how his club’s run in the Champions League came to an end.

“In first 20 minutes it was 3-2. Five goals in 20 minutes is not quite normal,” he told BT Sport . “We scored our goals and after, VAR made the rest.”

“The handball was inches. It [Sterling’s disallowed goal] was offside.

“I support VAR but maybe from one angle Fernando Llorente’s goal is handball, maybe from the referee’s angle it is not.

“It was cruel. The moment we celebrate and we are so close to the semi-finals. It is what it is.

“The first half was good. In the second we created a lot of chances. Spurs are a strong team so it was quite equal. Unfortunately we are not at the next stage.”

City still have plenty to play for, with an FA Cup final against Watford to come and the club in a battle for the Premier League title with Liverpool.

And while Guardiola admits the loss to Spurs will be hard to take, he promised that his club would be back up for the closing run in a couple of day.

“We have a lot of games from the league and FA Cup final,” he said. “Today is tough and tomorrow will be tough too but the day after we will be ready to fight for the Premier League.”

Godswill Akpabio Calls Out INEC For Disobeying Court Order

Featured Image

Former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio representing Akwa Ibom Northwest senatorial district has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in the state of disobeying court order to allow him access to election materials.

The Election Petition Tribunal, headed by its Chairman, Justice W.O Akanbi had on April 2 granted Senator Akpabio, the petitioner and applicant and his agents, including forensic experts, access to inspect and copy all electoral materials used in the senatorial election.

Counsel to Senator Akpabio, Patrick Umoh disclosed that the electoral umpire in the state has refused to obey the order of the court to allow them inspect and copy the materials for litigation purposes.

Umoh told the Nation that it was obvious that the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC, Mike Igini was colluding with the PDP-led government in the state to frustrate the efforts of the legal team.

“We learnt that on the instruction of Igini, Akwa Ibom INEC has consistently flouted the order and has refused the agents of Senator

“Akpabio and forensic experts access to the election material. INEC has been engaging in a hide-and-seek game.

“We also wish to inform you that we had earlier reported for the said inspection on Thursday, the 11thday of April, 2019, Friday, 12thApril, 2019 and Monday, 15thApril, 2019 but our efforts to have access to the materials and inspect same did not yield any positive result,” Umoh said.

“INEC has colluded with PDP and advised the party to file a motion on April 16th which they cited as the reason they couldn’t allow the inspection of the materials as ordered by the court.

“Analysts believe the hide-and-seek by INEC was to give the PDP enough time to file the motion,” he maintained.

Manchester City Loses to Spurs Via Away Goals, 4-4 agg, in Champions League

The match between Manchester City and Spurs Ended with High tension from after Raheem Sterling was denied a winning goal by VAR.

Mancester City have been eliminated from the Champions League after one of the most dramatic games the Etihad has ever seen. It was an anti-93:20 as Sam Lee from Goal put it.

In a game that dazzled from the first second to the last, City fans were on an emotional roller-coaster as the chaos weaved one way then another.

And leading 4-3 in added time, Raheem Sterling was denied a winning goal by VAR.

The Blues could not have done anymore, but technology denied a deserved goal that would have sent City into the semi-finals.

See Guardiola’s Comment:-

“I am so proud, especially of the fans for the reaction and the incredible reaction. I never saw the stadium like today,” said the City manager.

“We are sad for all of them but they know we have given everything but football is unpredictable and unfortunately we are not in the next stage.

“Today we make mistakes for first two (goals). Every team has quality to do that.

“What we have done in these two seasons is incredible and I am so proud. The players played to be in the semi-finals but Tottenham take the victory and go through.”

“Yeah, it’s tough. It’s cruel but we have to accept it,” Guardiola added. “It was a nice game for everyone. Second half we did everything. We scored the goals we needed but congratulations to Tottenham and all the best for the semi-finals.

“I support VAR. But maybe from one angel the goal from Llorente is handball, maybe from the referee it is not. I am fine for fair football and fair decisions. The referee must be helped. In the future and the present, it will be fair and that’s all.”
