Liverpool vs Barcelona 4-0 , Origi and Wijnaldum Pulls the trigger to the UCL final

Featured Image

The Match between Liverpool and Barcelona is the clear example that represents – “Never Give Up” wore by Salah. After being anxious over the few mins to full time, Liverpool declares the team worthy of any comeback.

Liverpool are looking to become only the third team in the history of the European Cup/Champions League to come from three goals down after the first leg of a semi-final and progress to the final, after Panathinaikos in 1970-71 and Barcelona in 1985-86.

– On only three previous occasions has a team been eliminated from a Champions League knockout tie having won the first leg by three or more goals, with the last occasion being Barcelona against Roma in last season’s quarter-final (4-1 first leg, 0-3 second leg).

– Barcelona have won both of their previous Champions League visits to Anfield against Liverpool, winning 3-1 in November 2001 and 1-0 in March 2007; Barcelona are the only the away side to win more than once at Anfield in the Champions League.

– In all European competition, Liverpool have only lost one of their 18 home semi-finals at Anfield (W14 D3 L1), losing 0-1 to a Billy Bremner goal against Leeds United in the 1970-71 Fairs Cup.

– Barcelona have won two away Champions League games in England this season, winning 4-2 at Spurs and 1-0 at Manchester United – no side has ever won three away games in England in a major European competition in a single season.

– Liverpool are unbeaten in 19 home matches in all competitions (W16 D3 L0), only enjoying a longer run once under Jürgen Klopp – a run of 25 between January 2016 and January 2017.
– In the first leg, Liverpool became the 32nd different Champions League opponent Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has scored against – only former Real Madrid and Schalke striker Raúl has scored against more (33).

– Liverpool haven’t conceded a Champions League goal at Anfield in 367 minutes, since Kylian Mbappé scored for Paris Saint-Germain in September; the Reds haven’t kept five consecutive home clean sheets in the European Cup/Champions League since October 1984.
– Barcelona have won just five of their last 18 away Champions League knockout ties (W5 D4 L9), but four of those five victories have come in England (two vs Man City, one vs Arsenal and Man Utd), with the other against PSG in April 2015.
– Lionel Messi has 12 Champions League goals for Barcelona this season, just two shy of his best ever tally in a single season, scoring 14 in 2011-12; the Argentinian has netted more goals against English teams than any other player in the competition’s history (26), including six this season.

FG releases 2019/2020 Common Entrance results for admission to Unity schools

Featured Image

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu has announced the release of the 2019/2020 National Common Entrance Examination for admission to the 104 Unity Schools across the country.

Adamu, while presenting the results in Abuja on Tuesday, promised to ensure that the admission process was given the maximum attention it deserved.

” We are mindful of the anxiety on the part of parents to get admission for their wards into our schools. We are equally conscious that some of our competitors (private schools) are ahead of us in terms of the conduct of their 2019/2020 admissions.

” The good news is that our schools have an edge over most of the private schools in terms of qualified teachers and facilities among other variables. Even at that, we are not taking anything for granted.

“For next year’s admission, we shall adjust the exam schedules to ensure that children get their admission letters before the end of April.”

Adamu highlighted the admission criteria as National Merit to be 60 per cent, Equality of States as 30 per cent and other factors as10 per cent.

He added that candidates who applied for schools outside of their states of origin would be given priority in line with the ideals of the founding fathers of Unity Schools.

” It is the hope of the government that every graduate of our Unity Schools should be able to speak at least one Nigerian language outside his/her mother tongue in the course of his/her six-year programme.

“In terms of the admission exercise, it will commence on the 14th of May 2019, with the first batch of admissions coming as from the first week of June.

“Supplementary admissions will take place between the 13th and 20th of July 2019. By the second week of September, the gates of all our 104 Unity Schools will be opened for resumption.”

The minister, therefore, assured Nigerians that the Unity Schools remained the best destination for quality secondary education, adding that government was doing more to ensure the rehabilitation and landscaping of the schools, provision of qualified teachers, librarians and laboratories.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the National Examinations Council (NECO) conducted the National Common Entrance Examination on April 27 for admission to the Unity Schools.

The result of the exercise was presented to Adamu by the Acting Registrar of NECO, Alhaji Abubakar Gana, for publication.

Liverpool seek new ‘heroes’ with Salah absent against Barcelona

Featured Image

Liverpool must turn to unlikely heroes to overturn a 3-0 Champions League semi-final, first leg deficit against Barcelona on Tuesday, according to defender Trent Alexander-Arnold after Mohamed Salah was ruled out with a concussion.

Roberto Firmino will also be absent against the Spanish champions at Anfield, leaving Jurgen Klopp without two of his most potent attacking weapons for what is already a massive challenge.

“Obviously we’ve got two of our main goalscorers out, but it also presents an opportunity for some of the other lads to come in, make a name for themselves and make themselves heroes,” said Alexander-Arnold.

“If we do overturn the deficit tomorrow then whoever scores, their name will always be remembered because I am sure it will be one of those really special nights.”

Salah was stretchered off during Liverpool’s tense 3-2 win at Newcastle on Saturday that kept alive their chances of a first Premier League title in 29 years after colliding with Magpies’ goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

“It’s a concussion so that means he would not even be allowed to play,” Klopp said on Monday.

“He feels OK but it is not good enough from a medical point of view that is all. He’s desperate (to play) but we cannot do it.”

Klopp, speaking before Manchester City ensured they remain in the driving seat for the Premier League title by beating Leicester 1-0 on Monday, was realistic about his side’s chances of progressing to a second consecutive Champions League final.

But the German refused to give up hope.

“Together with our supporters it was a long season and there is at least a little chance to make it even longer,” Klopp added.

“Two of the world’s best strikers are not available tomorrow night and we have to score four goals against Barcelona to go through after 90 minutes.

“It doesn’t make life easier, but as long as we have 11 players on the pitch, we will try it.”

Anfield an extra man

Luis Suarez scored the opening goal against his former club in last week’s first leg at the Camp Nou, but ahead of his return to Anfield, the Uruguayan warned his current teammates of the lift playing on home soil will give Liverpool.

“To play at Anfield is like playing with an extra man for what the fans transmit to the Liverpool players,” said Suarez.

And Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde believes the attack will be the best form of defence as if the Catalans get an away goal, Liverpool will need to score five.

“What we have to do is score,” said Valverde.

Suarez will be joined by Lionel Messi and Philippe Coutinho on his return to Anfield after a £142 million ($186.5 million) move to Barca from Liverpool last year.

But the often-injured Ousmane Dembele is absent for the visitors due to a hamstring problem and Valverde believes the Frenchman’s absence will be felt just as much as Salah and Firmino.

“We don’t want any player to be injured. It would have been extraordinary to see them all on the field. They are all important,” he said.

“Dembele’s absence is a problem. Against a team that concedes space (in behind) it is always important to have player like Ousmane.”

Police arrest, detain Ademola Adeleke

Featured Image

The police yesterday arrested and detained the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in last year’s gubernatorial election in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke over alleged forged certificate.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, confirmed the development yesterday in Abuja.

Besides, Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja has ordered the release of the senator’s international passport to enable him travel to the United States for a medical check-up.

Granting the order in an ex-parte application filed on April 30, 2019 by the Osun lawmaker, Justice Ekwo directed the court’s deputy chief registrar to release Adeleke’s travel documents to enable him go overseas between May 2 and 9.

“The respondent (police) shall not prevent the first defendant from traveling for medical attention upon attending the invitation of the respondent on May 6, 2019”, he ordered before adjourning till June 10, 2019 to commence trial in the examination malpractice charge slammed against him and others by the force.

Also yesterday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alleged plot to poison the detained lawmaker.

During a press briefing in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, pointed out that “there are fears already in the public space that there are plots by certain elements to poison him in detention.”

The PDP described Adeleke’s detention as illegal.

It explained that the confinement was in total disregard of an extant order of the Federal High Court.

Kano State Government opens fresh corruption case against Emir Sanusi

Featured Image

The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission yesterday summoned top Kano emirate member to appear before it over alleged financial misappropriation.

A letter signed by the commission’s Director of Operations, CSP Sulaiman Aliyu Gusau, invited an aide to the Emir, Alhaji Isa Bayero for investigation.

The letter, written on behalf of Executive Chairman, Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado, may signal fresh corruption charges against Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

“Pursuant to provision of section 31(1) (a) and (b) of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Law 2008 (as amended) requested release of the officer to explain payment vouchers from 2013 to 2017.

“It directed Isa. S. Bayero to be at the commission conference room by 12.00noon on Thursday, May 9, over an investigation on alleged violation of section 26 of the commission’s enabling Law in the management of Kano State Emirate Council Fund,” the letter reads.

The commission had in 2018 commenced large-scale probe against Emir Sanusi before the state House of Assembly intervened, which forced the commission to stay action on the matter.

Investigation by the Assembly later took another twist when the House leadership allegedly received gratification to dismiss all allegations against the Emir.
