Former President Olusegun Obasanjo sues Punch for defamation of character

Featured Image

Nigeria’s former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has sued The Punch Newspapers and its columnist Sonala Olumhense for defamation of character.

The publication was published January 27, 2019 and considered defamatory, injurious, false, malicious, unjustified and harmful to the former president who is demanding N1 billion from the newspaper and columnist.

According to the report, Olumhense titled the article “This is the best Obasanjo can make”, noting Obasanjo’s persistent efforts to distort Nigeria’s history and colour it in his own image.

He also wrote that Obasanjo isn’t the saint or patriot people perceived him to be.

“Obasanjo was no anti-corruption champion either, although nobody harangues corruption better than he. Yes, he launched the EFCC and ICPC, but they fought only the fights he allowed them to and wrote the reports he wanted.

“His real motivation was the largely retaliatory drive to recover the so-called (Sani) Abacha loot against the man who had thrown him behind bars.

“At the end, he could not account for the billions of dollars recovered.” The article reads.

Olumhense berated the former president’s performance on the issue of electricity and accused him of keeping the money for his selfish interest.

“So abominable was Obasanjo’s performance on electricity that he lavished at least $10 billion he could not justify. The House of Representatives said Obasanjo often paid money to companies that had not cleared space for the projects,” Olumhense wrote.

The writer also referred back to 2006 and 2013 where the former president spent trillions of naira on roads and accused him of money he kept spending after that.

“In an article in December 2006, I demonstrated that he spent close to N1 trillion on roads. In December 2013, using one of those roads, I explored how the practice of persistent parallel spending keeps the money flowing but not project delivery.”

However, Obasanjo is seeking legal redress through his lawyer, Kanu Agabi who has asked the court to take action.

According to Obasanjo’s counsel, he said just because the constitution back their press freedom does not give them the right to defame anyone.

“The article does not constitute a valid exercise by the defendants of their freedom of speech and of expression.” Agabi said.

He also asked for an injunction order against the defendants associates, agents, assignees, servants, privies, proxies, allies or anyone howsoever called from further publishing or causing to be published the words complained of or any other defamatory words concerning the claimant.

Obasanjo requested the court to issue an order forcing the defendants to retract the “defamatory words via a publication on the front page of two national newspapers within three days from the day of the delivery of the judgment of the court.”

Human rights lawyer and activist, Femi Falana, is expected to represent Olumhense in court.

Chelsea currently facing two-window transfer ban after losing FIFA appeal

Featured Image

Chelsea have lost their appeal to FIFA over the club’s two-window transfer ban for breaching regulations relating to the international registration of players under the age of 18.
The Blues were originally sanctioned in February over deals with 29 players, and will now take their appeal process to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

It is unclear which players are related to the breach of regulations.

Part of Chelsea’s appeal was upheld, and the club will now be allowed to register players under the age of 16.

A statement from FIFA on Wednesday read: “With respect to all men’s teams, the ban on registering new players, both nationally and internationally for two registration periods, has been confirmed by the FIFA Appeal Committee, with the following exception:

“The FIFA Appeal Committee believes that Chelsea’s wrongdoing consisted in not respecting the prohibition from internationally transferring or registering for the first time foreign minor players.

“In the committee´s opinion, imposing a ban on registering each and every minor would not be proportionate to the offence committed.

“Consequently, the FIFA Appeal Committee decided that, as far as youth categories are concerned, the ban shall not cover the registration of minor players under the age of 16 who do not fall under the scope of art. 19 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, which refers to international transfers and first registrations of foreign minor players.”

Chelsea have responded to the decision, saying in a statement: “Chelsea FC has today received the decision of the FIFA Appeal Committee.

“The club notes that the FIFA Appeal Committee has decided to partially uphold the appeal lodged by Chelsea FC against the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee. However, the club is very disappointed that the transfer ban of two consecutive registration periods was not overturned.

“Chelsea FC categorically refutes the findings of the FIFA Appeal Committee. It acted in accordance with the relevant regulations and will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).”

Chelsea previously appealed to FIFA regarding the ban in the hope it would be delayed, but when the governing body refused in March, the club said it was “astonished”.
Barcelona had successfully made a similar appeal over their transfer ban in 2014 which saw the prohibition postponed until the following year.

The Catalan club was then able to bring Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic, Jeremy Mathieu, Claudio Bravo and Marc-Andre ter Stegen to Camp Nou before the ban was imposed.
With Eden Hazard looking likely to depart to Real Madrid this summer, Chelsea could be left unable to replace the Belgium international.

Their deal to sign Christian Pulisic, however, is not affected given the USA international was signed in January and loaned back to Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the 2018-19 campaign.

Jose Mourinho Reacts To Barca Heavy Defeat Against Liverpool

Featured Image

Jose Mourinho has reacted to Barcelona 4-0 defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final at the Anfield on Tuesday evening.

Barcelona blasted another three-goal lead to suffer an elimination for the second time in a row under Ernesto Valverde.

The former Real Madrid boss told beIN Sports: “When you see a result like this, you have to also speak about collapse, and Barcelona totally collapsed.

“The fourth goal, if you see that goal in an Under 14 or Under 15 match, you would say ‘the kids are sleeping, the kids have no mentality to play football, the kids have to learn the basic things of the game’.

“But we are speaking about the best players in the world, and to concede that goal really shows you a state of mind.

“Barcelona has some of the best players in the world. It is their natural habitat to play at that level.”It’s their natural habitat to play Barcelona-Real Madrid, Champions League finals, semi-finals, every season.

“It’s something that is so difficult for me to explain. It’s so difficult for me to believe that my team is winning 3-0 in the first leg and we are going to lose in the second leg 4-0.

“How to justify that is very difficult. I would like to see Valverde try to explain, but I still believe that would be very difficult for him to explain.”

Barcelona quest for treble hit the rock with the embarrassing elimination in the Champions League.

Manchester City Close To Confirming £107 Million Double Swoop

Featured Image

Manchester City are reportedly closing in on deals for Sporting midfielder Bruno Fernandes and Atlético Madrid tempo-setter Rodri.

Fernandes has impressed in Liga NOS this season – scoring 19 goals and assisting 13 – while Rodri is seen as the natural replacement for 34-year-old Fernandinho.

According to Telegraph Sport, the Portugal international is expected to cost £47m with City also happy to meet Rodri’s £70m release clause.

Fierce rivals Manchester United were also tracking Fernandes but the 24-year-old preferred to join Pep Guardiola and close friend Bernardo at the Etihad Stadium.

Should a deal be completed, this would increase the chances of Ilkay Gündogan leaving City this summer.

The Germany midfielder is out of contract next summer and renewal talks have stalled, with the Premier League champions more inclined to sell him than lose him on a free.

Manchester City, Liverpool Dominate Premier League Awards

Featured Image

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have been nominated for the Premier League Manager of the Season award, while Manchester City and Liverpool players dominate the Player of the Season shortlist.

City manager Guardiola and Liverpool boss Klopp are locked in a pulsating battle for the league title, which will be resolved on the final day of the season on Sunday.

Leaders City travel to Brighton and Hove Albion knowing a win will be enough to see them secure a second consecutive Premier League title, while Liverpool – one point behind their rivals – take on Wolves at Anfield.

If Guardiola is successful, he will become only the third manager to retain the Premier League title after Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho.

Klopp’s side have already amassed 94 points this campaign – the fourth highest in the competition’s history.

They are joined on the shortlist by Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino and Wolves’ Nuno Espirito Santo, with the winner to be announced at the League Managers Association awards evening on May 14.

Meanwhile, the Premier League’s two most dominant sides have three players each on the seven-man shortlist for Player of the Season.

The Premier League’s top goalscorer Mohamed Salah, PFA Player of the Year Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane are all included from the Reds, while Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva represent the reigning champions.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, who has scored 16 Premier League goals this season, completes the shortlist.

Middlesbrough Fans Beg Mikel Obi To Stay

Featured Image

Middlesbrough fans have appealed to Nigeria international Mikel Obi to stay with the championship side at least for another season.

The Super Eagles captain waited till the last day of the regular season before netting his maiden goal for Middlesbrough in their 2-1 win against Rotherham United at the New York Stadium on Sunday.

The victory meant nothing to Boro and their fans as the 73 points they garnered in the Championship season could not guarantee them a place in the top six positions after Derby County defeated West Brom 3-1 in a simultaneous game.

Speaking after the game, the former Chelsea stalwart strongly hinted that he was not extending his contract with Middlesbrough, stressing he has options elsewhere and wants to win trophies.

Even though Boro were disappointing for most of the season, Mikel proved to be an inspired signing as his vast experience and calmness on the ball steadied the midfield.

Middlesbrough fans may not want Tony Pulis to stay but they certainly want the 32 year old midfielder to stay, with his contract due to expire next month.

A fan, Lesley Poole with Twitter handle @lellyk07, saying, “Shall we all chip in and help Middlesbrough sign Mikel Obi . Please stay, while chris @chris added, “Hope your staying as it’s been a pleasure to watch you.

Another fan, John Chambers hopes Mikel becomes a player-manager next season. “New player manager next season John Obi,” he tweeted via @JohnChambers001.

JF @alilbitofflame also said, “Stay, please. Just try next season”, while Alan Hunton said via @huntyhouse, “Good technical player but zero pace.Time to move on. Lost the ball virtually never, in his first four games and then regularly thereafter. Odd.”

Mikel appeared in nineteen matches across all competitions for Middlesbrough and captained the club in their last six games in the EFL Championship.

Jurgen Klopp Hails ‘Unbelievable’ Liverpool After ‘Impossible’ Barcelona Triumph

Featured Image

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hailed his side’s “impossible” Champions League semi-final second leg victory as “unbelievable” after they trumped Barcelona 4-0 to claim a 4-3 win on aggregate and reach the final.

The Reds booked their place in European club football’s showpiece event for the second year running with a remarkable result at Anfield that saw their injury-hit attack demolish the Blaugrana in stunning fashion.

A brace apiece for Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum fired them past Lionel Messi’s visitors, who found themselves shackled by a superb home performance that defied the odds in a dramatic encounter.

Klopp was unable to call upon the services of key stars Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino after both were ruled out of action, while defender Andy Robertson was replaced at half-time by Wijnaldum due to injury.

Yet the hosts emerged as the ultimate victors on another historical European night in front of the Kop, to make it three continental finals in as many campaigns with Klopp in charge.

Speaking at full-time to BT Sport, the German admitted that he had thought the feat to pull off such a comeback was beyond the realm of possibility – except for his own side.

“I said to the boys before the game that this is impossible, but because it’s you, it’s possible,” Klopp gushed.

“It’s 10 past 10, so most kids are in bed…These boys are f*cking mentality giants. It’s unbelievable.

“The whole game was too much. It was overwhelming. We played against maybe the best team in world.

“Winning is difficult but winning with a clean sheet, I don’t know how they did it. It’s unbelievable.

“I saw James Milner crying on the pitch after the game. It means so much to all of us. It’s the best phase of football.”

Klopp made sure to pay additional tribute to Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri, two fringe players in the squad brought to the fore tonight in their hour of need.

“There are more important things in the world. But creating this emotional atmosphere together is so special. It’s all about the players,” he added.

“The mix of potential and unbelievable heart is just a mix I never saw before. You have to be confident in a game like this.

“Divock and Shaq didn’t play a lot. Putting a performance in like that, it was so important. It shows what’s possible in football. It’s so nice. It’s really nice.

“We had to be serious. But we needed to be cheeky as well. It was necessary. Barcelona defend predictable things well. But you need to be unpredictable at moments.

“I saw the ball flying in the goal, I didn’t see the corner. I didn’t see who took the corner. Ben Woodburn said ‘what happened?’”

Liverpool will have to wait a day to find out their opponents in the final, with Ajax or Tottenham set to join them there.
