I Hate Chimamanda!

I Hate Chimamanda! – By StyleVitae

Fashion and intellectuals haven’t always been chummy pals, as the former has traditionally been considered the cultural domain of lesser mortals like recording artists and less intellectual celebrities.

It’s a sphere that has been kept at arms length by public intellectuals, but African writers have no problem breaking the stereotype bred by their European counterparts. We have geniuses like Teju cole known for his Ikire Jones scarves and Alain Mabanckou’s dapper style is only surpassed by his scribbling prowess.

However, in a pond of stylish African intellectuals Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche has been the most vocal about the love and contradictions of exploring the intersections between the  public intellectual life and a love for fashion. She fuses being a fashion lover and novelist, as well as a figure for feminists ideals and politics very perfectly and I hate her for it.

I Hate Chimamanda for her thoughtfully put together stylish combinations and ardent devotion to promoting ‘Made in Nigeria’ pieces. Her personal style is fast becoming an inspiration to other women equally enthusiastic about style, but not in the least interested in Nigerian designers. I mean, If it’s good enough for Chimamanda of epic grace and taste, then it’s good enough for them.

If Chimamanda Adichie’s journey to becoming an Instagram fashion star has taught me anything, it’s that style like any other mode of self expression requires passion.

Open Letter To All Africans

Open Letter To All Africans – Patrick Chiazor (Lavieleptic)

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

Dear beautiful Africans,

Like me, you’ve probably wondered why we Africans are always behind the rest of the world in almost everything: sports, science, entertainment, technology, research, education, entrepreneurship – you name it.

This piece was written by Patrick Chiazor and was first published on Lavieleptic. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of 360Nobs.com.

Well I’ve come to conclude that there’s one thing that still holds us back from really becoming all that we can be, individually and collectively. It has to be one major underlying thing that cuts across every area. How else do you explain this lag?

If a child passes 7 out of 10 courses, it’s understandable – he’s simply not good in the 3 he failed. What happens when he fails the 10? You start to check his living conditions, the school itself, his mental state, etc, because there has to be a more fundamental problem.

We cannot continue to attribute our position globally to bad leadership anymore, or corruption. Just isn’t enough to answer why we are behind in almost everything.

This one thing is so deep-rooted, making it a bit hard to change, but because it’s just one main thing that encompasses all others, it’s still easy to change – it’s simply our mentality!

I believe it ties to almost, if not everything! Corruption, the bad leadership we complain about, poverty, illiteracy, all tie to our mentality. Women’s rights – our belief that women belong in the kitchen and ‘the other room’; the belief that only women should be the ones doing the chores; where a girl is raped and people are asking what she was wearing that made the man rape her – mentality!

It’s our mentality that makes us so judgemental and sometimes hypocritical. If you doubt that we are hypocritical, watch this:
92% of the Kenyan population agree that homosexuality is ‘unacceptable’, while having sex “against the order of nature” in the country can carry a prison sentence of up to 21 years.

Yet, Kenya once topped the Google trends rankings for both ‘gay sex pics‘ and ‘gay porn pics‘, with an extraordinarily high search index.

South Africa came second, followed by Nigeria (ah, our holy Nigeria) and Pakistan – with the US and UK (the ‘Western’ world that are imposing their ‘bad morals’ on us😂 ) ranking a distant seventh and eighth. How do you explain this?

We need to stop judging others. I’m different from you doesn’t mean I’m better than you. Variety remains the spice of life. If it doesn’t hurt, why am I so bothered. Live and let live.

Do not mistake mentality for culture, tradition, roots. I’m ALL for Africa. I love Africa. No one should lose sight of their origin, but still, you should drop the things that are stopping you from moving forward.

Dear beautiful Africans, with regard to this mentality, here are some things to note:

Not everything shoved down your throat must be accepted

Open letter to Africans - Patrick Chiazor (lavieleptic)Hook, line, sinker, and even the fisherman himself – that’s how gullible we can be. We need to ask more questions. I’ve noticed that we are many times, okay with the status quo. We are not explorers, we are not adventurous. Don’t say, ‘Oh that’s who we are, why must we change to be like the Westerners’. I’d tell you why. Because that’s what you need to invent. That’s how you discover, that’s how you survive. That’s how we got to the Moon! We will continue to play catch-up until we start to get more inquisitive and discover more things on our own.

Ask any student who discovered the river Niger, and up till date, they’d say Mungo Park. It wasnt until centuries later that the legendary Fela argued that Africans were already using, living by and around the river long before Park came. Vice President of Nigeria, Osibanjo also recently said that people were already fishing there before Park’s grandfather was born. Our teachers never stopped to ask, ‘how did a man discover a river that had been there with people around it for years upon years’.

We cannot simply swallow everything we have been told. Answers are only gotten when questions are asked.

Dear beautiful Africans, please let’s ask more questions.

Religion is not going to save you

Open letter to Africans - Patrick Chiazor (lavieleptic)I’m writing more extensively on a different post on religion, so I won’t dwell on it here – simply stay tuned.

Here’s the thing – the more you can achieve without help, the less you depend on another; the richer you are, the less likely you are to ask another for money; the more you prepare for an exam, the less likely you are to ask someone for answers during the exam.

Can you tell where I’m going?

The more advanced a society is economically, socially, politically, mentally, the less likely you are to search for ‘supernatural’ help.

Imagine you had good roads, electricity, food, jobs, good housing… everything going for you, what will your prayer point then be? Mostly thanks giving and lifestyle preaching. You won’t need to spend 3 hours per service because you have 1001 things to ask for.

Here, we have more to pray about, because we have very little going for us. Then we add ‘enemies’, because of course, we cannot be the cause of our own problems – some supernatural forces (that are not in advanced climes, somehow) have to be behind our backwardness.

I’m not at all saying you should not be religious, all I’m saying is that there is more to life, to success, to moving forward, than religion – than prayer.

Dear beautiful Africans, religion will not save you.

Suport your own

Open letter to Africans - Patrick Chiazor (lavieleptic)After a lot of struggling in your local country, you finally become a rich man, with a lot of disposable income. Your new car is German, your clothes are now Italian, all of a sudden, Egusi and Oha soup now taste funny, so you only eat Chinese. You send your kids to school in London, your chairs are Italian leather, your perfumes are Arabian – and you’re wondering why the economy is not growing. Meanwhile, your friends, relations, neighbours, are struggling to sell their items to you, but you will rather buy on Amazon. You’re only making the struggle of the next man even harder than yours.

Picture a tug of war between two teams – Africa and the rest of the world. Now this is a ‘trade war’. Buying these foreign things means you are queuing behing the rest of the world to throw in all your weight, against your own people. That’s exactly what it is!

See what Trump is doing in America. They will do everything they can to ensure their money stays within their economy. Just ask any economist, the dangers of excessive importation.

We have to believe in our own and then show support. Was very impressed by the hashtag that trended a while ago – #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira. We should never forget that!

Dear beautiful Africans, don’t only show support when it’s soccer or jollof war.

Parents, stop inhibiting your children’s self-expression

Open letter to Africans - Patrick Chiazor (lavieleptic)Many of our children are simply not exposed. Put the average Nigerian child (remember the average Nigerian is POOR) beside the average American, and the Nigerian child will stare at the American child in utter amazement, like he were an immaculate conception.

We teach our children not to talk when we go out, all in the name of self discipline – they end up timid. We do not let them ask certain questions because we think it’s ‘rude’ – they end up lost and confused in a mysterious world. We let them go through life without answers; answers that we could easily provide them with, forgetting that they will simply go elsewhere to get these answers – answers that may be wrong.

We do not let them live their lives, we do not let them love who they want, we do not let them be what they want. We, many times, do not give them much of a choice. We tell them the tribe, religion, type of family to marry from, and expect them to be happy. Even when we realise they’re unhappy, we force them to stay back for the selfish reason of not tarnishing your image.

How can they be who they should be? How can they fulfil their potential? How can they compete with their peers in other climes? How?!

We do not teach them about financial literacy. We believe exposing them to money at an early age will make them become ‘greedy’.

We do not ask them how they feel. Sometimes when we do, we do not care how they feel.

We do not randomly remind our kids sometimes, that we love them…..

It’s a common saying among Nigerian parents: ‘you have grown wings right?’. Yes, dear beautiful African parent. How else is your kid supposed to fly? How?

Respect should not be by age alone

Open letter to Africans - Patrick Chiazor (lavieleptic)So obviously I’m just throwing this in. It’s not one of the main problems of Africa😏. This is my blog anyway, not the NY Times🚶‍♂️.

So, why should I respect you? Is it because you are 5 years older than me? In Africa, yes! Here’s the thing – everyone deserves what I call a ‘base level’ of respect. For example, for being human, we all start at say, 20 out of 100. So if one has achieved absolutely nothing in life, I will still treat them with that base level respect because he is human and deserves to be treated right.

Now, for every 5 years you add in age, I may add say 5 level points. So if this man is 60 years old and has achieved nothing, I’d still call him ‘sir’, get up for him to sit down, etc. Why? Because his age has ‘earned’ (pay attention to this word) him ‘extra’ respect.

So, a 20 year old boy, who is CEO of a multi-million dollar company will have more respect than a 20 year old boy who is in 300 level and has good grades, who will have more respect than a 20 year old boy who sits at home doing nothing, and with no source of income, and not willing to work.

The point is, respect is EARNED! Yes, your age will add you some extra points to your base level respect, but you have to do something with your life to add even more points and earn people’s respect. Do not think that because you are 3 years older than someone, automatically, you will be worshipped. That’s the mentality I grew up with in Africa – people thinking age is everything.

In reality, besides age, people need a reason to respect you. When they call your name, what can be said about you? ‘Oh that guy is 40 years old’, is not enough anymore.

I’m not obligated to greet you first because you are older than me. Anyone can acknowledge the presence of the other. The way we treasure greeting is just amazing to me. Maybe it’s just me.

Africa truly is blessed – abundant resources, beautiful people, so much potential, but the way we think at times, stops us from moving forward.

In conclusion, picture a situation where, as Africans, based on the points raised above:

1. we are asking questions, doing more research, and not swallowing everything and being okay with what we know and where we are

2. we are not relying solely on the supernatural, but we are equally proactive and forward thinking

3. we are allowing our children to fulfil their potential, and everyone is performing at optimum level, with passion and drive

4. we are supporting our own 100% – 1.2 billion Africans behind your business. Do you think anything will change?

The whole idea of this post is not to condemn anyone, as no one is perfect, the idea is to sensitize us to change the way we think, so we can move forward.

What do you think our problem is? Have a different view? Please let me hear from you.

Do you know any African that needs to read this? Then please share!

READ: Full Transcript Of Maurizio Sarri’s First Press Conference As Chelsea Manager

Featured Image

Opening statement

“It is really a pleasure for me to be here in London, the Premier League and at the moment the best championship in the world. I am happy to be here at Chelsea. I am sorry that my English is not so good, and didn’t want to have the press conference today as I don’t want to say anything wrong. I hope I will be able to do it in a few weeks. Sorry again and thank you.

Has the delay made it harder for you plan?

“No. I was not planning anything. I had to solve a situation with Napoli so I was not planning anything. I knew that Chelsea could be interested but then the situation was resolved a few days ago, so there are preparation difficulties and I have to solve them with my staff.

The challenge ahead. Did you speak to Carlo Ancelotti?

“Well for me this is a difficult challenge, but a fascinating one. I know it will be very difficult and here we have the strongest coaches in the world and players in the world. I know tt is difficult, but I have not asked anyone anything, honestly. I want to have this experience by myself, including mistakes. The Premier League is different to Serie A, because the Premier League is better. In Italy it is better tactically, but here there are stronger players. However, need to have fun to do well and I have noticed that in the last year something changed in the Premier League. It is not a typically English squad in terms of player but this has given me confidence. I know it will be difficult.”

Courtois, Hazard, Willian staying? What about players coming in?

“Well clearly we would always like to keep the strongest players, this is what any manager and club wants to do. We will have to see how the transfer market goes. But I want to clarify I feel I am more of a field manager, a pitch manager than a general manager. I think I am one of the few managers who is bored by the transfer market. I don’t want to talk about it, I am not that interested in it. I think our task as managers is about growing the players we have.”

Do you have to win trophies to keep your job?

“I don’t know and I am not interested. My goal is to have fun as long as I am here and be competitive in all competitions until the end. In life the biggest gift you may receive is have fun while you do your job. Few people have this and I hope it manages to happen to me.

“Sometimes yes, sometimes not. I think it is better not to whinge, but to enjoy.”

Will there be more entertaining football at Chelsea?

“I really hope so. Clearly football can be entertaining or not but much depends on the players. A good manager, if he has strong players, there has to be a lot of physicality and technical play. This depends on the characteristics about the final squad. I think if a team has fun often the fans do too. This is very important and then there is the high level objectives, but we must start by having fun. This is important for us and our fans.”

Did you leave Napoli on bad terms and with Aurelio De Laurentiis?

“I have a wonderful memory of Napoli, I love the people there and always will. If we didn’t part ways well with the club and the president, then I think mistakes have been made on both ways. Maybe the president misinterpreted some silences of mine, but this was the result of some uncertainties. For someone who thought it was time to go, but I was heartbroken. That is it. I think that over the next few years we will overcome this.”

How far away is the team from your philosophy and did you speak to Antonio Conte?

“I don’t want to be influenced by nothing and no one, or by judgements that have been made by people from a certain point or from a certain prospect. Antonio has reached incredible results here, he is an extraordinary manager. Clearly I play in a slightly different way so it will take time with the squad. This is a post World Cup time so many players will have to come back from the World Cup, it will take time to build a slightly different way of playing. All the good things Antonio Conte did must be left and not be changed, but it is also true that today’s football these are the timelines, it is very important also to know how to impose ones own football philosophy in shorter times, shorter than the past.”

Kalidou Koulibaly high of praise for you, how much time do you need before we see your style of football?

“Well it depends. In my previous experiences a few years ago I needed a long time. Once I needed three months, and I resisted thanks to the club’s far-sightedness, last time, because in Napoli we suffered in the first three matches and then started along a positive path. I hope I have improved and that this initial time has got shorter and that the quality of the players will see results while we are building the team.”

What is the first thing of Sarri that you will introduce to Chelsea?

“I do not want to change anything in the club’s philosophy but I think in the past years this has been one of the best clubs in England and in Europe. I want to bring my philosophy on the pitch. I always start from something. Ours is not a sport, but a game and anybody who plays a game starts doing that when they young, it is fun. The child in each of us must be nurtured because this often makes us the best. The professional aspect also brings out the best of us, but 99% of the time, not 100%. So to create a play that is fun is the first thing to obtain a style of play that is a very high level squad.”

What players do you want to bring in?

“I cannot name names, because I don’t know who they are. I spoke with the club and said that ideally I think that a pinch of quality is lacking in our central midfield for a certain type of play. Otherwise they are a very high level. At the end of the transfers it will be up to understand which type of game is the most suitable for the final squad. I cannot claim to come here change 20 players, I must adapt to Chelsea and the players and then we will see if we change some thing in my game, because the squad is making me play a different game because of their characteristics.”

What have you learned from Pep Guardiola?

“Well he is a class act, a champion and a genius. It is difficult to explain what his insights are. Clearly in the first year he had some difficulties as well, however 100 points in PL is an extraordinary feat, maybe something that cannot be repeated. We are talking about a genius and the first step is to fill in a gap, which was clear last year. A year before it was in favour of Chelsea. I hope last year was an occasional gap and not a structural one and we will work to make sure it was an occasional one.”

How did the job come about, did you speak to the club?

“Until a few days ago I did not speak with the club. Through my representative and my lawyer I knew there could be an interest and a possibility, but I wasn’t sure. I met the members of the club over the last few days, the end of last week. The club has not asked me anything. They asked me to build a season where we have to be competitive in all competitions. To do that we have to get to March or April in all competitions, this is the first step and then during the season we will see the specific objectives. For the time being we have spoken about this.”

Have you spoken to Roman Abramovich and his visa issues, transfer budgets and nothing has changed

“Well this is something where our owner is an extremely reserved person. I don’t want to start a work relationship with him by speaking about private things. I think that this is an extremely private relationship and I would also hope this relationship is respected, also given the characteristics of our owner.”

Gary Cahill’s future and English players?

“Well a number of English players is imposed in the players’ list so there will be English players. I never want to make this distinction, I am not bothered about nationality. They are neither English, French or other nationalities, they are strong or not strong. They are not young or old, they are strong or less strong. In respect to Cahill he can still give us a lot. In keeping the English players, in my experience in Italy something must be left. One of the teams that had the highest number of Italians was Juventus and their structure lead to important results. I think in multi-ethnic squads and the English ones, the teams of other countries we should respect a very long tradition. I think this is right.”

Response to previous homophobic and sexist comments.

“People make mistakes. One of these was made when I was angry, the other was not a mistake because it was a journalist with whom I shared jokes with for three years, it was misconstrued. These were mistakes, that is for sure. I think that those who know me very well cannot define me in this way, not homophobic or sexist or racist, absolutely not. I am an extremely open person and I do not have these kinds of problem and I hope to show this when I work here and live here. These mistakes were made and when someone makes a mistake they have to apologise and accept that some allegations could be made by the press. A professional and ethical approach is very important, more than apologies. I hope you get the chance to know me better and I hope you will forget about this very quickly.”

Mourinho called himself the special one, what you call yourself?

“I would like everyone here and in the club and my players, all of you just to call me Maurizio. Just Maurizio.”

What do you think about Mourinho?

“He has won everything and I think that is enough for a manager. He has won everything many times, with different clubs and I think someone who has this track record does not need a description. We are talking about a top level, world level coach and manager. I esteem Guardiola and the other managers, my playing philosophy is closest to Guardiola, but I really appreciate both of them in the same way.”

Have you contacted the World Cup players?

“I don’t think so, honestly. Clearly the players you are referring to are very high level players and I would like to keep them in my squad. But a telephone call without looking at them in the eyes would not give me any certainty. I would like to meet these players face to face to understand them and what the best thing is to do for everyone. Before that I would also like a player to come on the pitch for four and five days with me to have a clear idea on what the situation is.”

Talked about having fun, Hazard, looking forward to working with him?

“I was not talking about having fun in a press conference, I would like to have fun on the pitch and during the week and during the training sessions and I want to have fun and win matches.

“Hazard is a high level player and I think he is one of the top two or three European players. Obviously I would like to have fun during the week with him, this would mean very good results and we will have been very competitive at the end of the season. I hope I will manage to improve him, this is very difficult given he is at a very high level.

“With Mertens it is different. Dries had always been an external striker, everybody thought by necessity that he became a very high level player. We are talking about two very high level players. Dries has improved with me but started at a lower level to Hazard. I hope I will improve Hazard too, but this will be very difficult.”

Did you have concerns coming to a club who fire their managers early? Why will it be different here to win a trophy?

“If I was someone who always worried probably I would do another job. Our job means risks but also a lot of satisfaction. What happened at Chelsea in the past does not concern me. I am not afraid, I don’t want to be afraid.

“With respect to the rest, while it is true I haven’t won anything but I have been in Serie A three years and think apart from Juventus nobody has won anything. For three years in a row we had records with club points. In the first year 81 points, 82 was another record and 91 was as well.

“I think that we have worked very well and the difference in working well and winning is often minimal. I hope I will be able to fill in this gap with this club, the difference between doing well and winning. I hope so.”

Chelsea New Manager Maurizio Sarri Speaks About The Future Of Eden Hazard And Thibaut Courtois At The Club

Featured Image

New Chelsea manger Maurizio Sarri said that he is “bored by the transfer market”.

Chelsea key players Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois have both been strongly linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge, and it has been reported that Real Madrid are prepared to pay £150m+ to sign the pair this summer.

Sarri – speaking at his first official press conference – insisted that Chelsea “would like to keep the strongest players”, but refused to offer any guarantees over the futures of Hazard and Courtois.

“Clearly we would like to keep the strongest players. This is what any manager and club wants to do. But we will have to see how the transfer market will go over the next few days,” Sarri told reporters.

“I am much more of a pitch manager than a general manager. I am one of the few managers who is bored by the transfer market. I don’t want to talk about the transfer market and I’m not that interested in it. Our task as managers is growing the players that we have.”

Real Madrid Will Sign ‘Magnificent’ Players This Summer – Florentino Perez

Featured Image

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has revealed that the club will make some big signings during the transfer window, insisting “our great squad will be strengthened with magnificent players.”

Real Madrid have not made a major signing since singing James Rodriguez after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil

PSG duo Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, along with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, have been linked to the club

Speaking as new right-back Alvaro Odriozola was presented on Wednesday, Perez referenced the club having won the last three Champions League titles before suggesting that the squad would be further added to.

“We are aware of the level of demands which this team is subject to,” Perez said. “We are Madrid and we always want more. We must strengthen the present and the future. This is a great squad and it will be strengthened with magnificent players.”

French sports outlet RMC has claimed that Hazard has a verbal agreement with Madrid, although no deal has been reached with Chelsea. Teammate Thibaut Courtois is also reported to be close to a €35m switch to the Bernabeu.

Madrid have spent around €40 million on former Real Sociedad defender Odriozola, 22, an unused squad member with Spain at the World Cup. Some reports had claimed that Barcelona also approached the Basque youngster, who Perez said had made the right decision in moving to his club.

“A top player is arriving, who many other clubs wanted,” he said. “But [Odriozola] was very clear where he wanted to play. Thank you for choosing Real Madrid, you have shown your winner’s DNA by choosing the most demanding club.”

Liverpool Expect Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain To Miss ‘Majority’ Of 2018-19 Season Due To Injury

Featured Image

Liverpool have confirmed that midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is likely to the majority of the 2018-19 football season as he continues his recovery from knee ligament damage.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp even went as far to say “it will be a bonus” if the 24-year-old plays at all.

Oxlade-Chamberlain injured his knee during Liverpool’s Champions League semifinal with Roma in April and underwent successful surgery eight days later.

The Merseyside club say a timescale for Oxlade-Chamberlain’s recovery was not revealed at time because the 24-year-old did not want the developments to distract his teammates from their run towards the Champions League final.

“It feels like now is an appropriate time to tell people that for Ox this coming season will be about focusing on recovery and rehab,” Klopp told Liverpool’s website,

“We have known this from pretty much the day after he got the injury and after the successful surgery, we were sure of it.

“I hope everyone treats this information responsibly. There has been no change, no setback — it’s exactly on the schedule we expected and planned for. The new information is that we’re now giving more detail publicly.

“It is typical of Ox that he didn’t want the news to overshadow the end of the season and, to be quite honest, we thought we could wait and tell people at an appropriate time.

“His surgery — which he had on the day of our second leg in Roma — has been completely successful and his recovery has started superbly well.

“But the truth of the matter is that we are preparing this season knowing he will not be with us on the pitch for competitive matches for the majority of it. If we do see him back this season it will be a bonus.”

“It is so important — because of how valuable and important he is to what we are looking to do here in the coming seasons — that the focus is on doing this right and not rushed. Ox is completely on board with this approach,” Klopp added. “He is such an outstandingly good person and someone who even when not playing is integral to the heartbeat of Melwood.

“I cannot wait to have him back with us for matches, but we will wait for him and we will show the patience that is required to make sure he comes back ready to continue where he left off: as one of the most outstanding performers in European football in that moment.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain made 42 appearances during his first season at Liverpool following his £40 million move from Arsenal.

My name was given to me because of the events that happened during my birth. My mother went through a lot. I was rejected at birth by my father. He didn’t want a girl. I lived with this thought all my life. I talked about this rejection and other challenges I faced growing up. I talked about the pressure, the self-esteem issues I had as a child. I always tell people l hate my comfort zone. I push myself constantly. I do things that people do not expect me to do. So, I talked about the business world. People think I like money.
