OPC Leader Gani Adams Replaces MKO Abiola As Yoruba’s Aare Ona Kakanfo

Featured Image

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, has declared the National Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Gani Adams, as the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland.

The declaration was made on Sunday during his 79th birthday celebration, a statement by the spokesperson for Mr. Adams, Segun Akanni, said, adding that his principal had received a letter of appointment from the Alaafin.

The monarch also confirmed the declaration while speaking with newsmen last night.

“Yes, I have confirmed Otunba Gani Adams as the next Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland. He emerged out of the five aspirants that I considered for the position but I will hold a press conference where he will be formally announced. It is after this announcement that the traditional rites for his installation will start,” he said.

When asked how the lot fell on Adams, Oba Adeyemi said this would be disclosed during his press conference scheduled for this week.

Mr. Adams is expected to replace late business mogul and politician, Moshood Abiola, who died in July 1998 in the detention camp of the late military dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, in 1998 for refusing to trade his presidential mandate for freedom.

Since the demise of Abiola, the position of the Aare Ona Kakanfo (Generalissimo), head of Yoruba warriors had been vacant until yesterday (Sunday) when a letter of appointment was given to the OPC leader by Oba Adeyemi.

No $25 Billion Missing Or Contract Awarded In NNPC – Presidency

Featured Image

The Presidency on Sunday said no contracts worth 25 billion dollars were awarded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), even as it added that 25 billion dollars was not missing in the corporation.

Mr Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, who made this known in a statement in Abuja, added that no contracts were procured by the NNPC based on the leaked memo of Petroleum Resources Minister of State, Ibe Kachukwu, even though such impressions have been maliciously created in the past few weeks.

Akande disclosed that a close look at each of the said projects indicated clearly that “these are not procurement contracts”.

He said “when I tweeted on Thursday morning, I had indicated that the Vice President, while acting as President approved Joint Venture Financing arrangements.

“But for some curious reasons, a few media reports used that tweet to report that I said the then Acting President approved N640 billion worth of oil contracts.

“Such reporting is both false and misleading and therefore, ought to be completely ignored by all seekers of truth.”

He added that what was more important was “when you look diligently at the referenced projects/transactions one by one, you will see, as NNPC has shown, that none of them was actually a procurement contract”.

“Take the Crude Term Contract and the Direct Sale, Direct Purchase (DSDP) agreements, for instance, these are not procurement contracts involving the expenditure of public funds.

“Both transactions are simply a shortlisting process in which prospective off-takers of crude oil and suppliers of petroleum are selected under agreed terms, and in accordance with due process.

“It is therefore wrong and misleading to refer to them as though they’re contracts involving the expenditure of NNPC funds, or public funds of any sort,’’ he added.

He recalled that the Petroleum Minister himself had in fact, clarified that he meant “to focus on administrative and governance issues, not red-flag any fraud, because no fraud exists in this matter.”

For both transactions, Akande reiterated that there was falsehood and also inaccurate to attach 10 billion dollars and five billion dollars values on them.

“Attaching monetary values to these contracts is an arbitrary act that completely distorts understanding of the situation.”

He said Nigerians should be informed clearly that whenever there was monetary value on any crude oil lifted in the country, “the proceeds go directly to the Federation Account and not to any company.

“In fact, the Buhari administration in the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA), has closed down multiple NNPC accounts in order to promote transparency and probity.”

Akande also explained that in compiling the shortlist for prospective off-takers of crude oil and suppliers of petroleum under agreed terms, “there were public placements of advert in the mass media seeking Expressions of Interest.

“Bids were publicly opened in the presence of NEITI, DPR, BPP, Civil Society groups and the media; in some cases even, these events were televised live.”

“For the sake of emphasis, let me state clearly that both the Crude Term Contract and the Direct Sale and Direct Purchase agreements are not contracts for any procurement of goods, works or services,’’ he stated.

Akande said it was important to “set the records straight that the list of approved off-takers does not carry any financial values but simply states the terms and conditions for the lifting and supply of petroleum products”.

He also said that the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Contract was a contractor-financed job, which had not been finalized or awarded.

According to him, it is still making its way to the Federal Executive Council.

The presidential aide noted that there were also three presidential approvals given on Joint Venture financing arrangements, meaning loans to cater for cash-call obligations.

“One of these was okayed by the President in 2015, and two by the then Acting President in 2017,” he explained.

On Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Akande said “there is no contract in the three billion dollars to four billion dollars range as reported in some media.

“You can then see from the foregoing that the 25 billion dollars being bandied in the media does not exist. There is no 25 billion dollars missing.”

Ex-Taraba Speaker, Dogari, Atiku’s Ally, Dansallah, 3,000 Others Dump APC For PDP

Featured Image

An erstwhile speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Hon. Simon Dogari, alongside other chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state on Sunday dumped the party for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

One of the chieftains, Mallam Isah Dansallah, an associate of former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, and a founding member of the APC, explained that he defected due to what he called lack of good governance by the ruling party.

“I dump the APC to PDP because the opposition PDP is lesser evil compare with the ruling APC,” he told the Leadership.

“There was a time that I found myself in the APC, I worked for it success in 2015, but the APC has metamorphose and turn into a ghost with crisis all over.

“The APC led government has succeeded in subjecting Nigerians to abject poverty and has successfully divided Nigerians along religious and ethnic lines.

“People are dying every day with various sickness because of depression as some people can’t even afford a square meal a day.”

Also, while speaking with the party members at the PDP secretariat in Jalingo, Dogari said he decided to dump the APC with about 3, 000 of his supporters due to lingering disagreement in the state chapter of the party.

He noted that while the APC leadership in the state lacked focus, the PDP, on the other hand, had a sense of direction and commitment to progressive ideals of social and political well-being and economic development.

“We have seen the sense of direction and commitment for progress by the PDP and decided to join the party to enable us contribute our quota for the development of the state,” he said.

Receiving the defectors, State PDP Chairman, Mr. Victor Bala Kona urged them to feel at home, saying most of the people involved were members of the PDP before they left for the APC.

Bala assured them that the PDP was at the moment, totally committed to internal democracy so as to win the confidence of the electorate and thanked them for having confidence in the PDP, assuring that they would be treated equally as members of one family.

The chairman expressed optimism that PDP would win all elections in the state and the 2019 presidential election.

Eriksen: Tottenham Is Not A Harry Kane Team

Featured Image

Christian Eriksen believes Tottenham has rubbished any talks saying they rely on Harry Kane, after their 1-0 win over Bournemouth.

Pep Guardiola angered Mauricio Pochettino, after he labelled Tottenham ‘The Harry Kane Team’.

But Eriksen feels that notion is dead in the water after his sole goal in the match, helped Tottenham to a win.

“We have a strong enough team to score when Harry doesn’t score,” Eriksen, 25, claimed. “If it is me or Dele Alli, or Son, or Kieran Trippier or Moussa Sissoko or anyone, anyone is good enough to finish. On this occasion the ball fell for me but it was a team performance.

“No one wants to be called a one-man team, if it is meant seriously. I don’t know if it was. It is a team performance and if you have respect you probably don’t say it. It maybe was a joke but I don’t know.”

Biafra: US Dragged To Court For Not Declaring IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu A Terrorist

Featured Image

The US embassy in Nigeria has been dragged before a federal high court in Abuja for saying it does not view the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist group and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as a terrorist.

The US embassy’s spokesman, Russel Brooks, had said that under the US laws, IPOB cannot be seen as a terrorist organization.

However, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/977/17 and dated October 12, 2017, a certain Nze Charles Ugwu, through his lawyer Simon Kanshio, has asked the court to compel Brooks to withdraw his statement within seven days of delivery of judgment in the case.

Ugwu sought the court to determine “a true interpretation of sections 1, 4 and 5 of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013 and the United Nations Convention on Terrorism”

“Whether the United States of America represented in Nigeria through the 2nd defendant is no longer obligated to be bound by the United Nation Convention on Terrorism which the United States of America signed and ratified?”

Among other reliefs, he sought a declaration that by true interpretation of sections 1, 4 and 5 of the Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013 and the United Nations Convention on Terrorism.

“A declaration that the 1st and 2nd defendants representing the United States of America in Nigeria are under absolute obligation to obey Nigerian laws both statutory and judicial so far as they are within the territory of Nigeria irrespective of their personal opinions.”

It would be recalled, Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, had described as “unfortunate” the fact that the U.S. government refused to consider the IPOB as a terrorist organisation.

Spalletti: Icardi Is A Complete Striker

Featured Image

Inter Milan manager Luciano Spalletti has hailed Mauro Icardi and called the captain a complete striker, after his hattrick secured a derby win over AC Milan.

The Argentina international striker opened the scoring from open play and restored the lead for Inter, after Suso equalised.

Handanovic’s own goals restored parity, and it looked like the Derby was heading for another draw, until Icardi completed his hattrick with a well taken penalty.

“Mauro was grandiose today. Grandiose,” Spalletti told Mediaset Premium.

“Despite all the responsibility poured on his shoulders, he has the humility to listen to advice and works hard dropping back to win the ball.

“Icardi is a complete striker and for his age shoulders so much responsibility.”

Outrage As Rochas Okorocha Erects Jacob Zuma’s Statue In Imo

Featured Image

Cross sections of Nigerians have clearly registered their grievances at Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, after he unveiled a statue of Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa.

Zuma is currently on a two-day working visit to Imo, where he has been conferred with chieftaincy title – Ochiagha di oha mma of Igbo land – and also given the Imo Merit Award – the highest honour in the state, with a street named after him.

Outrage As World Bank Claims “Buhari Specifically Told Us To Focus On Northern Nigeria”

It is understood that the unveiling ceremony was witnessed by Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria.

In a statement issued to newsmen, Mr. Okorocha said the honour was conferred on Mr. Zuma for his love for education.

“Today, we have decided to honour you for your love for education, though you were deprived in your early days in life but you are working to make sure that every poor child went to School. Your love for education to us is the connection between you and government and the people of Imo State. The only industry we have and we can truly be proud of is education in Imo State. This is another reason why we have chosen to honour you”, he said.

But what is stirring outrage on social media is the giant-sized statue of Zuma in the state as several critics are of the opinion that a state which is owing workers’ salaries should not be spending millions of naira on such craft.

Unconfirmed reports also have it that Okorocha may have spent a whopping N520 million to build the statue in honour of Jacob Zuma.

Several netizens on Twitter wondered what Zuma has done for Imo State or Nigeria to merit such honour, while others noted that despite the role the country played to bring the apartheid regime in South Africa to an end, Nigerians were being killed in the country on a regular basis and Zuma had done nothing to check that.

Here are some reactions below:

Governor Ambode Unveils Fela’s “Liberation Statue” In Lagos

Featured Image

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Sunday unveiled an effigy tagged ‘Liberation Statue’ erected at Allen Roundabout in Ikeja in honour of the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

While unveiling the statue during an event earlier today, the governor described Fela as an enigmatic artiste who used the platform of his art to agitate for social and human rights by challenging government and people to explore development through social and economic activities that are rooted in African values.

Ambode also said the unveiling of the effigy was part of activities marking his 79th posthumous birthday and the 20th anniversary of his demise.

He added that aside challenging people to free their minds of all inhibitions and actualise their true potentials, the late music icon also voluntarily turned his back on a life of comfort and privilege, and took up his saxophone as a weapon to fight for the liberation of the people from neo-colonialism and bad governance.

Stressing that the spirit of Fela was still alive as a movement of social consciousness and justice against oppression, the Governor said the late legend made the world sit up and take notice of the energy of African art and music, adding that he will forever be accorded his position in the global hall of fame of artistes.

Ambode said: “The phenomenon that the world knows as “Fela” was deeply rooted in the evolution of Lagos State. The story of music, art, entertainment and tourism in Lagos and Nigeria cannot be told without an eloquent mention of the “Abami eda”.

“On this day, October 15th, which would have been Fela’s 79th birthday, the government and people of Lagos State celebrate ‘’Fela’’ with the unveiling of this Liberation Statue.  It has been 20 years since he passed on but the memories he left us with remain evergreen. Today we celebrate a man who voluntarily turned his back on a life of comfort and privilege, and took up his saxophone as a weapon to fight for the liberation of our people from neo-colonialism and bad governance.

“This “Liberation” statue is not an image of Fela but a symbol of Fela’s philosophy. This artwork was created as a form of respect and remembrance to this legend; what he stood for and fought for with his music; his mythology; struggle for freedom; fight for human dignity; social consciousness; courage and Pan-Africanism.”

Report : Espanyol Expecting Transfer Bids From Both Manchester Clubs for Defender Aaron Martin

Featured Image

Espanyol are preparing to receive offers for Manchester City and Manchester United target Aaron Martin in January, reports Sport.

Both Manchester clubs are keen on Aaron Martin , who has impressed for Espanyol since the start of last season.

According to Sport, scouts from several teams, including United, monitored the 20-year-old during Espanyol’s 0-0 draw at home to Levante on Friday night.

Espanyol expect to receive offers for the Spaniard in January, but they are holding out for the full value of his €30m buyout clause as they are looking to reinvest in their squad.

City, according to Sport, made an unsuccessful €20m bid for Aaron toward the end of the summer transfer window. They have ramped up their interest in him again after Benjamin Mendy recently suffered a long-term injury, although they are reportedly keen on Valencia’s Jose Gaya too.

Aaron’s buyout clause will increase to €40m at the end of June, and he is under contract until 2022.

Espanyol are already monitoring potential replacements and expected to spend around €3m or €4m on a new left-back if he leaves.

Sam Allardyce has ruled himself out of the running to be the new Scotland manager and has backed David Moyes for the job.

Former England boss Allardyce was installed as one of the favourites for the position after it was vacated by Gordon Strachan on Thursday.

Sam Allardyce left Crystal Palace of his own accord in the summer after keeping them in the Premier League and has been linked with a number of positions since.

But despite Scottish ancestry he says he will not be heading north of the border.

“My parents and sister were all born in Scotland, I have heritage from there, there’s no doubt about that,” he told BBC 5 Live’s Sportsweek.

Asked if the job interested him, he added: “Not at this moment in time because I’m enjoying not being involved at the front end of football at the moment. I think David Moyes would probably be my choice for that one.

“It’s very tempting, but no.”

Henry Onyekuru Confirms He Is In Talks With Everton Over Early Return From Loan

Henry Onyekuru has confirmed that he had a meeting with Everton last week over a possible early return to the club as he continued his top form for Anderlecht.

Henry Onyekuru posted a picture on his Instagram account tagging himself in Liverpool city centre last week – sparking rumours that he could be discussing an early return to Mersyside from his loan spell.

The Nigerian international joined the Blues in the summer for a fee believed to be around £7 million, and was immediately sent out on loan to Anderlecht as he didn’t qualify for a UK work permit.

However, reports have suggested that Everton could appeal to the FA’s “exceptions panel” about possible bringing the forward back in January – and Onyekuru seemed to confirm last night that initial talks have taken place at least.

He told Belgian publication La Libre : “Yes, that’s right [had a meeting in Liverpool] and I’m waiting for something. That’s all I can say.

“I hope to be able to play there in January. Everton is happy with my start to the season. But we are not in January and all my concentration is in Anderlecht.”
