Real Madrid Confirm Signng Of Flamengo’s Vinicius Junior

Featured Image

Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Vinicius Junior from Flamengo from July 2018.

The 16-year-old will remain with his current club until July 2019, although he could play for Real Madrid before that if both clubs agree.

Wonderkid Vinicius was already being described to be the ‘the next Neymar’ before his first professional game.

And after coming on in the 80th minute of the opening game of the season against Atletico Mineiro, he caught the eye of several European giants.

He beat Barcelona star Neymar’s youngest debut record by a year and managed to get idol Robinho’s shirt in a huge day for the youngster.

Vinicius has also shown his talents at international level; in March he was top scorer in the Under-17s Copa Sudamericano, with Brazil beating Chile to claim the title.

The story of this young prodigy is fairly common among Brazilian stars; born into desperate poverty, the young striker’s talent was spotted in a city on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, in the streets of Sao Goncalo.

He moved with his uncle to central Rio at the age of 14, in order to dedicate himself to football and graduated through the club’s competitive youth system.

His introduction to big stage was emphatic; in October last year, he scored the opening goal in the Clasico against Botafogo in the Rio de Janeiro Junior Cup.

Jordan Ayew Talks About Scoring His First Swansea City Goal

Featured Image

Jordan Ayew has talked in glowing terms of his mid-season move from Aston Villa to Swansea.

“It has not been easy for me this season,” he told the club website. “I came from Aston Villa in January. I was lucky the club had confidence in me and brought me here. I don’t know what to say – thank you is not enough.

“I am so happy here. I feel like I have been reborn.”

Ayew admits he is aiming to have a strong pre-season to ensure he is in immaculate condition ahead of the 2017-18.

“It was a really good time (to score his first goal),” said the Ghanaian international.

“The team did a really good job so I have to congratulate them, it wasn’t easy but I’m really pleased to get my first goal.

“The most important thing for me was the team, I couldn’t think about my personal situation.

“I knew that it would come one day.

“The best is yet to come from me. This season was really difficult for me, at Aston Villa it was difficult.

“Next season I’m going to be at Swansea so I’m going to have a good preparation, rest well and come back fresh and hopefully I’ll have a wonderful season.

“I hope people are happy with the club’s survival and hopefully next season we will not have this situation, we want to keep this momentum going into next season.

“We need to build on this because if we’d done like we have since January over the whole season.

“The team spirit has been magnificent but it’s important to keep Gylfi (Sigurdsson) and (Fernando) Llorente, they are great players. They are part of our survival season, scoring goals and making assists.

“I had confidence in the style of play and in the coach so I came and did my maximum best.”

Nigeria Resumes Payment Of N30,000 Stipends To 174,000 N-Power Volunteers

Featured Image

The Federal Government has resumed the payment of the N30,000 N-Power stipends, a programme which it started last year.

According to Daily Post, about 174,000 N-power volunteers in the FG’s Social Intervention Programmes (SIPs) have started receiving their monthly stipends.

Although, there have been protest nationwide by beneficiaries clamouring for their stipends, but as of Tuesday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation, Afolabi Imokhuede, told State House correspondents in Abuja, that about 85% of the beneficiaries have already been paid.

He said: “Now when I mean 86 per cent after physical verification, as at last count in end of April we had about 174,000 qualified, verified volunteers out of 200,000.

“We are currently right now doing a final reconciliation with all the states and FCT just to ensure, because we also found out that there were few cases of computation error, a few cases of omission at the point of digitizing the physical master list.

“The only ways we can know that; or some states get to know, is when these volunteers call the helpline or send e-mails complaining of non-payment.

“We then say to them; you cannot be paid because our records show that you are absent from verification.’’

The Presidential aide said the programme had been using focal persons, using N power coordinators in the states to act as the go-between the government and the volunteers to crosscheck their data.

West Brom Must Recruit Over The Summer- Tony Pulis

Featured Image

Tony Pulis admits West Brom will need to spend in the summer, but only for the “right players”.

The Express and Star say Albion are expected to “comfortably break previous club records” with their summer outlay.

And they quote Pulis as saying: “I think it’s going to cost more money every year to improve, that’s the way it is.

“But you have to get the right players. It’s not just about bringing players in and spending money, you have to spend the money in the right way and they have to be the right characters and the right players.

“The important thing is they have to be players who are going to be in your starting XI and that moves everything forward.”

Tony Pulis is flying over to Guangzhou tomorrow to speak to owner Guochuan Lai, and will point to this run as evidence the team needs strikers and defenders.

“It’s disappointing,” he said. “The final games of the season have highlighted the fact we need to be better in both thirds of the pitch.

“The opportunities we had when we were in control of the game are there to be taken and we have to take those chances.

“Their first (Swansea) goal is a third division goal. Sigurdsson has got great quality, but our marking is absolutely shocking from two defenders.

“That is what has happened. We’ve been leading games this year. Even if we were a little bit more stubborn we would have drawn games and won games which we haven’t.

“We haven’t been able to see them out. We need to improve at both ends of the pitch.

Report: Iker Casillas Signs Liverpool Pre-contract

Featured Image

Iker Casillas has reportedly signed a pre-contract agreement with Liverpool, according to AS.

Iker Casillas,36, is believed to be leaving Porto this summer after two years in Portugal. He signed a two year deal in July 2015 with the option of another 12-months, but he has decided to move on.

Casillas, who has been capped 167 times, has offers from Liverpool, Turkey, China and Qatar, according to the Spanish daily.

However, they report claims the former Real Madrid man, who has won the Champions League three times, has penned a pre-contract agreement with Jurgen Klopp’s men as he looks for at least one more season at the top level.

Casillas would bring great experience to Liverpool, having amassed a record 175 appearances in the Champions League as well as winning the World Cup with Spain.

Klopp is believed to be looking to add another goalkeeper to his squad after Loris Karius was signed last summer. Karius started the season as the Reds’ No 1 but lost his place to Simon Mignolet, whose form was good as LIverpool finished the season in the top four.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Will Help Us In The Europa League Final- Ander Herrera

Featured Image

Ander Herrera has claimed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will offer his help to his teammates for Wednesday night’s Europa League final.

The former Sweden international will play no part in the showdown in Stockholm as he recovers from a serious knee injury, but he will be with the travelling party.

Ashley Young, who is nursing a hamstring problem, will also be with the rest of the squad to provide support.

“When you want to win a European trophy and you want to make a good season, it is not only on the pitch, you need help from the outside,” Goal.com quotes Herrera as saying.

“Zlatan is here to help, Ash is also here to help. We are a team who is together. Everyone is important.”

When Ibrahimovic suffered his injury at the end of last month, concerns arose over whether he would even play again due to the severity of the injury at his age.

Herrera stated at the time that he had no reservations about his return due to the forward’s supreme physical state and that view has not changed after seeing him post-op.

“He is with us, he is supporting us,” Ander Herrera added. “I think he is very good. He is optimistic. He is 100 percent sure he will be back because he cannot stop winning. He cannot stop scoring. For sure he will be back at the best.”

Security Measures In Place For Europa League Final In Stockholm- UEFA

Featured Image

UEFA has released a statement claiming that there are no suggestions that the Europa League final will be targeted by terrorists following the attack in Manchester.

Twenty-two people were killed and a further 59 injured when an explosion went off shortly after 10.30pm when American popstar Ariana Grande finished her concert at the Manchester Arena.

Police have confirmed that children are among the fatalities, and that one man carried out the attack alone and died at the scene.

Manchester United, who have paid tribute to the victims of the attack, are due to face Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm on Wednesday night.

The European governing body’s statement read: “UEFA is shocked by last night’s attack in Manchester. Our thoughts are with the victims and the families of those affected. There is currently no specific intelligence which might suggest that any of the UEFA Europa League final activities in Stockholm may be the target of attacks.

“UEFA has been closely working with local authorities and the Swedish FA for many months and the terrorist risk had been taken into account since the very beginning of the project.

“Furthermore, a number of additional security measures were implemented following the attacks in Stockholm last April. Due to the tight security arrangements, UEFA urges fans to arrive at the stadium as early as possible, as detailed checks will be made at the entrances, resulting in potential delays in accessing the stadium.”

The final will be staged at the Friends Arena and kickoff is scheduled for 7.45pm.

23-Year-Old Drags Father To Court For Delaying Her Marriage

Featured Image

A 23-year-old woman, Khadija Ibahim, on Monday charged her father, Ibrahim Bassa to the Upper Area Court, Karu, Abuja for not allowing her to marry a man of her choice.

According to her, there is a suitor who is ready to marry her but her father had refused to give his consent to her request for marriage.

“He has refused to grant my request for marriage and he has also not given me a satisfactory explanation to that effect. The man I want to marry has made several attempts to meet with my father to discuss the wedding plan but he always avoided him.

“The day my suitor will be coming, that is the day my father will leave the house for an unknown place and this habit is delaying our marriage plan. The only reason he gave me was that the man I want to marry is not Fulani, which is not satisfactory to me because that is the only man I love.”

She pleaded with the court to order her father to allow her marriage to the suitor whose name she gave as Abdulhamidu.

“I want the court to compel him to give a satisfactory reason why I cannot marry the man I love,’’ she said.

Her father, the respondent, Ibrahim Bassa, said the allegations of his daughter against him were all true.

“It is true that I have not granted the man any audience, I have always avoided him because I am against his choice as a suitor. I have warned my daughter that marriage is not a child’s play. How can she get married to a man whose root and origin are not known to us?”

“If you are getting married in the Fulani tribe, the man or woman’s immediate and extended families must be known to everyone. My Lord, she is too young to make a choice of marriage and even to marry an outsider but she has remained adamant and even brought me to court,’’ he said.

The presiding judge Abdullahi Baba, adjourned the matter till May 29.

He advised everyone to maintain peace and asked all the parties involved including the plaintiff and her suitor to appear in court on the next date of adjournment.

Lagos State Government Terminates N844bn Fourth Mainland Bridge Contract

Featured Image

The Lagos State Government said it has terminated a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a consortium of firms to build the Fourth Mainland Bridge at the cost of N844 billion.

The state government also said it is presently considering various proposals from foreign investors from the United States of America and Britain, in order to accelerate commencement of the project.

The MoU for the 36 km bridge, which two past administrations had promised to do, was signed on May 25, 2016.

The project was to be financed by Africa Finance Corporation, Access Bank, and other private investors who have already signified intention to be part of the construction, while Visible Assets Limited would be the coordinating firm.

However, the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Mr. Adebowale Akinsanya during a ministerial briefing in Alausa, Ikeja area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria cited the slow pace at which the concessionaire was working as the reason behind the termination of the contract.

He said: “Due to slow pace of work, the contract was terminated. We are now looking at many investors, though interest is very high.”

He said that investors had started scouting for the project from different parts of the world, though the state government had not decided on the proposals it had received.

“The state government has started the proposals. We have such investors from South Korea, Europe and the United States, among few others. What we are doing now is vetting the proposals. We do not want to waste any further time. So works are in top progress on the 4th Mainland Bridge.

“The investors would be named very soon, the state government will enter into concession agreement with appropriate investors that deliver the project,” he said.

Nigeria To Impose ‘Additional’ 5% Charge On Tax Defaulters From July 1

Featured Image

The Federal Government yesterday announced that it would from July 1, 2017, impose additional 5 per cent charge on firms that fail to honour their tax obligations as and when due as part of measures to sanction tax defaulters and enhance voluntary compliance on tax obligation.

Speaking on this while announcing the new interest rate spread on unpaid taxes for the year 2017, Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, said such defaulters would pay about 19 per cent on their obligation which is 5 per cent above the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) 14 per cent policy rate.

She further noted that the new interest rate shall be 5 per cent over the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Minimum Re-Discount Rate (MRR) for 2017.

The finance minister also explained that Section 32(1b) of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (Establishment) Act 2007 empowers her to approve the new interest rate.

The Minister said the review of the interest rates on unpaid taxes was one of the necessary measures adopted by the Federal Government to enhance tax compliance, minimise tax evasion and deter late payments.

“Majority of Nigerian tax payers (PAYE) have taxes deducted automatically. However, those who do not and are required to file their taxes like companies and business enterprises, must understand that there are financial consequences for late payments. We believe that this will support our efforts to ensure that people pay their taxes promptly, thus providing a sustainable source of revenue to the government to finance infrastructure and other projects,” the Minister said.

Moyes Resigns From Sunderland Job

Featured Image

David Moyes has decided to leave Sunderland, resigning his position as a manager, following their relegation from the PL.

Moyes oversaw a season that saw Sunderland finish bottom of the league, with just six wins from 38 games.

The former Everton, Manchester United and Real Sociedad manager announced his decision on Monday.

Speaking about the decision, chairman Ellis Short said: “I pursued the services of David Moyes for a considerable period prior to his appointment last summer, which makes the announcement of his departure difficult for everyone concerned.

“Having worked tirelessly throughout the campaign to avoid relegation from the Premier League, David has chosen to leave the club without compensation, which is testament to his character.

“In the days ahead we will take some time for reflection, and then focus on recruitment and pre-season as we prepare for our Championship campaign. We wish David well in the future.”

Moyes said: “I would like to thank Ellis Short and the Board for giving me the opportunity to manage Sunderland and the fans for always being so passionately supportive of their club.

“I wish the players and my successor well in their efforts towards promotion back to the Premier League.”

Thurman Questions Brook’s Ability

Featured Image

Keith Thurman believes Kell Brook must show he is good enough to be among the best welterweights in the division.

Brook is looking to target Thurman for his WBC and WBA belts after defending his IBF belt successfully.

However, Thurman does not think Brook has what it takes to slug it out with the best in the welterweight.

“Of course Kell Brook came over here to America to take the title back home but for this one, he has fluctuated in weight classes,” he exclusively told Sky Sports.

“I am just interested in how bad he wants to be a welterweight and establish himself as one of the best welterweights in the world today.

“It is going to be difficult (moving back down to 147lbs) if he wants to hold onto that title and in my opinion, he didn’t do enough at welterweight before moving up anyway.

“For me, that is what this fight is about. In my opinion, there is so much going on at 147 but he had to go up two weights just to make a big fight happen.”

“And once I have cleaned up the welterweight division then move up. That would be a perfect scenario for me.”
