The festival organisation has recently transited into the care of a registered trust, a Not-for-Profit organisation managed by the Board of Directors. The festival was conceived and launched in 2013 as a fringe festival by the United Kingdom’s cultural organisation, British Council in response to their inspiration to provide a platform for theatre makers in Nigeria, to develop audiences for theatre productions and to produce theatre works for unconventional spaces.

The Board of Directors of Lagos Theatre Festival Foundation iterate the continued dedication of the festival to promoting theatre in Nigeria and encouraging theatre makers to create experimental productions that can be situated in different theatre spaces – traditional and non-traditional, in line with the laudable precedence that has been set by the founders of the festival, British Council.

I Would Have Paid Double For Alisson – Jurgen Klopp

Featured Image

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believes he would have paid double for Alisson if he knew just how good the goalkeeper was- he said after the Liverpool shot-stopper’s heroics on Tuesday.

Liverpool scraped into the Champions League knockout phase after a 1-0 win over Napoli at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah’s first-half goal helped Liverpool finish second in Group C, although they needed a good save from Alisson to deny Arkadiusz Milik late on.

Alisson has starred this season and his latest incredible save pleased Klopp, who brought the goalkeeper to Anfield from Roma for a reported €72.5million in July.

“If I knew Alisson was this good, I would have paid double,” the German said.

“The save Ali made, I have no words. It was a lifesaver. He did it. I never saw something similar.”

Barcelona Equals Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League Record

Barcelona have now equalled Bayern Munich’s record of 29 successive home games without defeat in the Champions League following their draw against Tottenham.

Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham at Camp Nou extended Barca’s undefeated streak on home soil in Europe – a run dating back to September 2013 with 26 wins and three draws.

Bundesliga giants Bayern set the record in a sequence that spanned 1998 to 2002 at their former stadium, Olympiastadion.

Already guaranteed a spot in the competition’s last 16, Barca shared the spoils against visitors Tottenham on the sixth and final matchday in Group B.

Virgil Van Dijk Deserved Red Card For Challenge On Mertens – Carlo Ancelotti

Featured Image

Napoli manager Carlo Ancelotti has lamented the lack of VAR having felt Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk should have been sent off for his challenge on Dries Mertens

Van Dijk was booked in the 13th minute of the Reds’ 1-0 victory when his studs caught Mertens’ ankle after he swept the ball away in a slide tackle.

Van Dijk claimed he had won the ball cleanly but Ancelotti argued he was fortunate to remain on the pitch.

“I’ve seen it on the video, I think it was a red card,” the Italian said.

“There were a lot of questions about VAR. When VAR comes in to the Champions League, it’s too late.”

Mohamed Salah’s first-half goal sent Liverpool through at the expense of Napoli, who had to settle for a place in the Europa League despite accruing nine points in their Champions League group.

A draw on Tuesday would have been enough to seal Champions League progression for Napoli, who beat Liverpool in the return fixture, but Arkadiusz Milik was denied a late leveller as Alisson stood up tall to deny him from close range.

“We knew that Liverpool would put us under a lot more pressure, they were very aggressive,” added Ancelotti.

“It was something we planned for, we knew the intensity was going to be a lot different from the first game we played. That was something we had to try and cope with.

“You can’t expect to come to a place like Liverpool and expect to create 10 really good chances, we created one or two and didn’t have the luck that we needed.”

Liverpool Defender Virgil Van Dijk Hails ‘Fantastic’ Goalkeeper Alisson

Featured Image

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has hailed “fantastic” Alisson after the goalkeeper helped his side into the Champions League knockout stage.

Mohamed Salah’s first-half goal was enough for The Reds to edge Napoli 1-0 at Anfield on Tuesday.

But they needed some late heroics from Alisson, who made a good save to deny Arkadiusz Milik and help Liverpool hold onto second place in Group C.

Van Dijk, who is suspended for his side’s next Champions League game after being booked for a dangerous tackle on Dries Mertens, praised the Brazil international goalkeeper.

“You don’t think too much because it happens in a quick second,” the centre-back told reporters.

“[It was a] fantastic save, very important for all of us and fantastic keeper.”

Despite the success, Van Dijk warned his team they still had a lot of work to do this season.

“We didn’t achieve anything. We didn’t achieve anything. We won the game, we’re through to the next round and that’s just the next step for us,” he said.

“We want to achieve big things this season, like every year I think, and we’re on a good way.”

Tottenham Achieved Mission Impossible Against Barcelona – Mauricio Pochettino

Featured Image

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino believes his team achieved what many labelled “mission impossible” by reaching the Champions League knockout stage.

Lucas Moura’s 85th-minute goal saw Tottenham claim a 1-1 draw at Barcelona in Group B on Tuesday.

The draw was enough to see the Premier League side finish second after Inter were held to a 1-1 draw at home to PSV.

Many questioned Spurs’ chances after they lost their opening two games and drew at PSV, and Pochettino hailed his side’s achievement.

“I am so happy, so proud. I remember after Eindhoven nobody believed in us. They all said it was mission impossible, but we are here,” he told a news conference.

“We are in the next stage and it is a massive achievement for the club. We are so happy for our fans that were here, happy for our fans in London and around the world.

“It’s a massive boost for the club and to have the idea to play in the next stage next year in the new stadium is a massive motivation for us.”

Buhari Writes Senate, Reveals Why He Won’t Sign Electoral Bill

Buhari Writes Senate, Reveals Why He Won’t Sign Electoral Bill

President Muhammadu Buhari has written the Senate to explain why he refused to assent to the Electoral (Amendment) Bill, 2018 recently passed by the National Assembly.

The President’s letter was read by the Senate President Bukola Saraki at the Tuesday Plenary.

President Buhari’s letter to the senators reads:

“Pursuant to Section 58 (4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), I hereby convey to the Senate, my decision on 6th December 2018 to decline Presidential Assent to the Electoral (Amendment) Bill, 2018 recently passed by the National Assembly.

“I am declining assent to the Bill principally because I am concerned that passing a new electoral bill this far into the electoral process for the 2019 general elections, which commenced under the 2015 Electoral Act, could create some uncertainty about the applicable legislation to govern the process.

“Any real or apparent change to the rules this close to the election may provide an opportunity for disruption and confusion in respect of which law governs the electoral process.

“This leads me to believe that it is in the best interest of the country and our democracy for the National Assembly to specifically state in the Bill that the Electoral Act will come into effect and be applicable to elections commencing after the 2019 General Elections.”

“It is also important for the following drafting amendments to be made to the Bill:

”A. Section 5 of the Bill, amending section 18 of the Principal Act should indicate the subsection to which the substitution of the figure ’30” for the figure “60” is to be effected.”

“B. Section 11 of the Bill, amending Section 36 should indicate the subsection in which the provision is to be introduced.

“C. Section 24 of the Bill which amends Section 85(1) should be redrafted in full as the introduction of the “electing” to the sentence may be interpreted to mean that the political parties may give 21 days’ notice of the .. intention to merge, as opposed to the 90 days provided in Section 84(2) of the Electoral Act which provides the provision for merger of political parties.”

“D. The definition of the term “Ward Collection Officer” should be revised to reflect a more descriptive definition than the capitalized and undefined term “Registration Area Collation Officer.”

“Please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

Former Barcelona Star Rivaldo Urges Ousmane Dembele To Be More Responsible

Featured Image

Ousmane Dembele needs to improve his attitude and focus on being more professional even if he does want to quit Barcelona, according to Rivaldo

Dembele, who joined Barcelona in August 2017 for 105 million euros ($119.45 million), suffered injury problems in his first year and this season has been criticised for his behaviour, including turning up late to training and events.

“Ousmane Dembele’s situation at Barcelona is upsetting because he’s already shown that he can play very well, score goals and be an important member of the team,” Rivaldo, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002, told Betfair.

” He just needs to focus on being a little more professional and to stop being late for training sessions.”

“This is not the correct mentality for someone potentially trying to leave Barcelona. It’s always strange to hear that someone might want to leave a big club in this way.

If he wants to leave, he must prove his value by playing well and not missing training sessions to recover his credibility as a professional. That will generate interest from other clubs. If he doesn’t change, he is hurting himself more than the club.”

CBN Vows To Deal With Abusers Of Forex On 42 Restricted Items, Adds Fertiliser

CBN Vows To Deal With Abusers Of Forex On 42 Restricted Items, Adds Fertiliser

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday vowed to deal with individuals and businesses engaging in clandestine activities to frustrate the restriction of foreign exchange on the importation of 41 items into the country.

This is just as the apex bank added fertiliser to the list of items it can no longer allocate forex for its importation into Nigeria – making it 42.

In a statement issued by Ahmed Umar, director, trade and exchange department of the CBN, the bank said the list of the 42 items became effective from December 7, 2018.

Also speaking, the CBN director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Kevin Amugo, lamented that the policy was fast being circumvented through the importation and dumping of the goods and services.

Unhappy about the development, Mr Amugo said the Economic Intelligence Unit of the apex bank in collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) would start the immediate investigation of corporate accounts and entities suspected to be abusing the policy.

The apex bank in a letter to all banks also warned that it would not hesitate to impose severe sanctions on all the culprits and perpetrators of these abuses.

According to Amugo, such sanctions include blacklisting the corporate entities and their directors; closure of their bank accounts, and restricting them from maintaining any bank accounts in any bank under the CBN supervision.

“Banks that provide their platforms for such economic sabotage and abuses would be appropriately sanctioned,” the CBN said.

In June 2015, CBN listed 41 items it said were ineligible for allocation of foreign exchange for their importation, on grounds that they could be competitively produced within the Nigerian economy.

They include rice, cement, margarine, palm kernel, palm oil products, vegetable oils, meat and processed meat products, vegetables and process vegetable products, poultry, tomatoes/tomato paste, soap and cosmetics, and clothes.

Other items included private airplanes/jets, Indian incense, tinned fish in sauce, cold rolled steel sheets, galvanised steel sheets, roofing sheets, wheelbarrows, head pans, metal boxes/containers, enamel ware, steel drums and pipes, wire mesh, steel nails, wood particle boards and panels.

Also included were security and razor wire, wood particle and fibre boards and panels, wooden doors, furniture, toothpicks, glass/glassware, kitchen utensils, tableware, tiles (vitrified, ceramics), textiles, wooden fabrics, plastic/rubber products, polypropylene granules and cellophane wrappers.

Banky W Talks State Police, Vows To Publicly Declare His Assets If Elected

Banky W Talks State Police, Vows To Publicly Declare His Assets If Elected

Popular Nigerian singer, Banky W (Olubankole Wellington), has pledged to support the establishment of state police if elected.

The entertainer, who is contesting for a seat at the House of Representatives in 2019, also said he was willing to publicly declare his assets if elected to represent Eti-Osa constituency of Lagos in the House of Representatives.

The singer cum actor made these comments on Monday, December 10, while speaking with Premium Times.

When asked if he supports state police, he said:

“Absolutely. I think that Nigeria is too big of a country to be policed effectively on federal basis. I think that there are so many issues that are going on in our communities now that I think states should have the ability to run their own police forces.”

“I know we have really great police officers but I feel like they are underfunded and not really supported and the bad ones make everyone else look bad. So, I think there is some reform that needs to happen in the police as a whole and I would encourage us to look towards state police.”

While stating that he will publicly declare his assets if voted into office, he said he does not have any political god-father.

In November, Banky W had declared his ambition to represent Eti-Osa Local Government Area in Lagos under the Modern Democratic Party, a political party founded in 2017 by some youth associations.

AY Calls Nollywood A Backstabbing Community, Speaks Of The Rivalry And Fakeness

AY Calls Nollywood A Backstabbing Community, Speaks Of The Rivalry And Fakeness

Popular Nigerian actor and comedian, Ayodeji Richard Makun, better known by his stage name A.Y, may just be stirring up a hornet’s nest in Nollywood after stating that the country’s movie industry is a backstabbing community where rivalry and fakeness is fast becoming a legacy designed for posterity.

The comedian took to his Instagram page some hours ago today, December 11, where he shared the post in reaction to Kevin Ikeduba’s now-famous video.

He wrote: “As a growing actor and a movie producer, NOLLYWOOD has exposed me to both the good, the bad and ugly. Barely few years in the industry, I have experienced all sorts from the stables of the high and mighty self-entitled ‘stakeholders’, to the very insecured individuals whose only claim to fame is an old testament fact of “We started this industry”.The above post by @kevinikeduba has given me the courage to further introduce you to our Nollywood. So welcome to an industry where rivalry and fakeness is fast becoming a legacy designed for posterity. Welcome to a backstabbing community where some pretend to love you in the open and condenm all your determination and efforts to succeed when you are not there. Welcome to an industry where enmity reigns supreme… Eg “If you are using her in the movie, then I can’t be on it”, or “I can’t be in your film and not play the lead role”.

“Welcome to an industry where some actors have more visible roles on Instagram and Red Carpets. Welcome to an industry where some would maintain a position that would make you keep to yourself rather than ask for a selfie. Welcome to an industry where some cannot use their platforms to help another colleague to promote his or her work(including the ones they are contracted for). Welcome to an industry where most families mainly depend on public support when one of our own falls sick. Welcome to an industry where some engages themselves daily on WhatsApp groups chatting about how others have no business making movies (even when they break their own records back to back).”

“Moving the industry forward goes beyond seeking for the downfall of others, or basking in the euphoria of an old glory that has been taken over by trend and time. Above all, I still see Nollywood as a special place; a place filled with creative geniuses. Working together and supporting ourselves can only make greater arts happen to the diverse audiences we all set out to entertain. But at the end of each plastic characters that comes with movie productions, let’s find a way to share our real side. It’ll either scare away every fake person in our life or it will inspire them to finally let go of that mirage called “perfection.”
