Review: Moving Forward EP Vol 1 – Sean Tizzle

Featured Image

The debut disc of Sean Tizzle, The Journey is one of those rare finds, a first timer’s pop record that played like a hits factory but managed to secure serious critical acclaim due to the quality of the recordings. His dynamic union with D’Tunes sizzled with intensity and managed to sidestep some of the usual missteps of the first album (Excess length, indiscipline, too many fillers).

The relationship with D’Tunes did not survive the red hot superstardom that followed, and went the way of Sean Tizzle’s earlier flirtation with Sound Sultan. He has struggled since then to connect to the zeitgeist as easily as he used to.

Replacing D’Tunes is Blaq Jerzee who produced all but one of the seven tracks that make up the EP. The outlier, Roll Up (ft. Iceberg Slim) produced by Mr Kamera has Tizzle adopting that coarse croak that has worked out so well, vocal wise for Davido on a mid-tempo beat that rides and falls with the rhythms of its instrumentation. Speaking of, Davido stops by for an uninspired, if pleasant objectification of the female anatomy titled, Dide.

The opener, Thank You is exactly what you would expect from the title and returns all gratitude to the creator for successes recorded so far. Blaq Jerzee seems to have been influenced by Tizzle’s earlier work and dices a busy recording that incorporates Tizzle’s fine vocal work into a pot that updates old school highlife with pleasant sounding live instrumentation powered by drums, and strings that can interest today’s youth.

Arawa Ni recalls those heady earlier days when Tizzle was prince of the block and instantly heads for the dance floor amidst a throbbing mix of drums, flutes and percussion notes. It is awesome stuff that solidifies Tizzles strong suits and charts a course for his ultimate future as an artiste, when the pop charts have no more use for his style of music.

Sean Tizzle is famous for quitting Twitter after a series of ignorant tweets landed him in hot water. He seems to have learnt his lesson and sticks to the telephone to pass his message of infatuation to his lover on the reggae tinged, Telephone Man.

Latin Lover with its Afro-Caribbean leaning is a dud that is more striking considering the brevity and limited time span of this record. Thankfully Alhaji Abass closes the entire affair and brings to the fore once again, what is becoming the go-to Sean Tizzle sound.

There is still work to be done on the song writing level and Mr Tizzle definitely needs to be inspired beyond trite like, You carry pass Nicki Minaj. Kiss Daniel and DJ Coublon may have taken the acute skill of recording live instrumentation to the next level, but if there is any artiste that proved such a formula was workable, it is Sean Tizzle.

Indeed that is ultimately what saves the EP from instantly forgettable status but Sean Tizzle needs to develop a persona and character that can back up his production efforts. Lest he be stuck in reverse.

“Lift Up Nigeria is a song that everybody can sing along to easily. My dream is to start a fire of love and patriotism about Nigeria amongst fellow citizens of our beloved country. #IAmTheFuture: My Little Growing Up Tale (#HappyChildrensDay)

Featured Image

Growing up as a child was not without its hurdles, although, I had a soft landing because my mom made sure I had at least a spoon, maybe not silver.

Getting things straight in your minds though, my mom wasn’t a single mom, my dad just wasn’t always there. As a result, I became independent way too early.

On the flip side, I had a friend, who had both parents, but couldn’t afford to be in school. We were age mates, but she would always run to carry my lunch box when I came back from school, just because I would never finish my food. Although I do not know her whereabouts, the moments we had, changed my life forever.

Film Review: Desecration

Featured Image

Sola Daniels is a happily married man living and working in the English countryside. We know he is happy because early scenes of Desecration set up the Thompsons as a regular, middle class immigrant family and Shola as a doting father to their daughter.

We know Shola Daniels is a doctor also because he is shown at work going through hospital engagements like ward rounds but Joseph Benjamin who plays him, capably, we must add, isn’t quite convincing as a medical practitioner. His recites the lines by rote and fails to confidently project the aura and carriage of a specialist at work.

Doctor Daniels and his wife Adesua (Nicola Alexis), are attending a dinner party when he runs into a beautiful stranger and they both strike up a connection. Another chance (is it?) encounter with her,- her name is Linda,- this time when his family is away on a weekend trip, and  the good doctor wastes no time falling into bed with her.

They begin an affair that should be torrid were it handled properly but the script by Bode Odetoye zips through some PG scenes that only serve to highlight the unpreparedness of his movie to play in the big leagues.

Shola isn’t the only member of his family going through a midlife crisis. Adesua has some work challenges, made all the more complicated by the reappearance into her life, of an old flame and she is also tempted to stray from her vows.

Linda is revealed to be psychotic (surprise! surprise! considering she is played by Rita Dominic) and proceeds to blackmail Shola with any means that is available to her. Yes, that includes pregnancy too. Nothing new to see here, it’s all been done before.

There are almost no stakes involved in Desecration. The film concerns itself with exploring issues of faithlessness in marriages, forgiveness and retribution but none of these is handled with any form of genuine introspection or even proper context. The mental health subplot also goes nowhere fast just as soon as it is introduced and the result is that Desecration is memorable only for its judicious length and passable acting.

The screenplay has nowhere to go and circles the drain, with no narrative agency or urgency. The ending is a bad joke and the film plays just like a collection of scenes cobbled together just for the sake. The picture is dark for most of the film’s running time and sound issues crop up constantly, making it a struggle to catch what the characters are on about.

Not that anyone needs to hear the words the characters speak to know what is going on, or what happens next. The entire film is predictable and its minuscule budget shows in every single picture frame. Rita Dominic’s Linda is erratic. Joseph Benjamin is a bore. Everyone else is terrible and a useless subplot with one of Sola’s patients will leave you scratching your head.

Niyi Towolawi’s 2013 feature, Turning Point had similar limitations with budget and technical skill, but at least, boasted a story that had some spark to it. This one doesn’t. He really should save us all the trouble.
