See All The Photos As Toke Takes Ibiza With Ciroc – The Arrival, The Hotel, The Cocktails, The Ibiza Parties

Featured Image

Toke Makinwa has hit the gorgeous island of Ibiza in the Mediterranean sea off the coast of Spain.

She joins co-Cîroc ambassador from South Africa, Cassper Nyovest & Thando Thabete. As she touched down at the Aeropuerto de Ibiza International Airport with Louis Vuitton duffel bags and her Hermes Birkin, Toke was whisked off in a chauffeur-driven Mercedes to the only 5-star luxury hotel on the island, the high brow Ibiza Gran Hotel. Toke will be taking residence in one of the hotel’s high class deluxe suites which offers its own custom whirlpool bath along with a magnificent view of Ibiza town.

Toke had drinks at the exclusive Kyupiddo at the heart of Ibiza, Dalt Vita, with a fine infusion of Japanese style cooking with the local Mediterranean delicacy. But she was not there for food; she came for its signature cocktails. She grabbed a bite at the world famous STK Steakhouse – indulging in the STK tradition of letting loose and dancing on the ‘table’ without a care in the world. Talk about the arrival moment.

Film Review: 10 Days in Sun City

Featured Image

The record bursting, chart topping, money spinning AY machine is all revved up and ready to go once again. The third installment in the comedian turned movie star’s unjustly popular Akpos adventure series hits the screen barely eight months after last year’s one joke misfire, A Trip to Jamaica. Not keen on rocking the boat, 10 Days has all the elements that have made the first two movies so financially rewarding.

Like the title declares, 10 Days is set in a foreign country with plenty tourism potential, recycles plot highlights, – and jokes,- from the previous movies and benefits from a host of cameo appearances by industry heavyweights and Hollywood B-listers.

30 Days in Atlanta employed the services of Ramsey Nouah to accomplish the dual challenges of holding down the dramatic end while dragging bums to seats. In A Trip to Jamaica, these roles were spread evenly between Nse Ikpe-Etim and Funke Akindele. At this point in his career, AY can practically write his own check as far as Nollywood is concerned but for 10 Days in Sun City, he does the most business man like thing by hiring Adesua Etomi, the most buzz worthy leading lady presently working.

Akpos finds himself on a new hustle, this time as manager, boyfriend and protector to a small time beauty queen, Bianca (pun intended) played by Etomi. Akpos plucks Bianca from obscurity, and is looking to make her into the next big thing. His motives are far from altruistic though as he latches hungrily onto Bianca’s rising profile, riding on her coattails to fame and fortune.

A spanner is thrown into the works when Otunba Williams (Richard Mofe-Damijo, campy yet dignified) whose Otawi cosmetic company sponsors the national beauty pageant Akpos has entered Bianca in, takes a fancy to the pretty but not-so-smart ingenue.

Otunba whisks Bianca away to Sun City, South Africa, – she is chaperoned by Akpos,- on the pretext of shooting a commercial and orchestrates a high powered, if demented plan to keep Bianca for himself. His tricks include pampering, soliciting, bullying and downright violence.

As a Warri boy, Akpos fails to carry last and finds himself in a race against time to keep the woman he loves from slipping beyond his reach. The last 30 mins of 10 Days are essentially a rehash of A Trip to Jamaica’s action scenes, only with more fun injected.

Give the credit this time to director Adze Ugah (Mrs Right Guy) who is slightly more capable with technical scenes than Robert Peters of the previous two entries. Points must also go to the screenplay written by Kehinde Ogunlola which while heavy on the repetition and obvious with the pop culture pilfering, still manages to come across as refined property, especially when compared with A Trip to Jamaica’s no fun mediocrity. Switching the technical team and staying out of the writing process might have saved AY’s franchise. Or at least prolonged its lifespan.

AY hasn’t improved as an actor one bit but it can be argued that he has stayed faithful to his bumbling ‘fool’ of a character. His range of emotions are limited to one perplexed facial expression and he still imagines, three films in, that watching Akpos run through a golf course, buttocks jutted out, may be the height of comic timing for his viewers.

It isn’t.

At the end of the day, the primary thing expected of AY and his Akpos movies are that they be funny. Not smart, not sensitive, not coherent. Just funny. It is a low bar to scale and the last film was quite generous in lowering it further. This probably explains why 10 Days in Sun City is an easier watch despite the hit and miss jokes and the random continuity errors. The sights too help as Sun City’s tourist designs are highlighted in beautiful aerial takes.

Rounding out the supporting cast are rapper Falz, who steals his scenes easily, Mercy Johnson (characteristically over the top,) American actor Miguel Nunez Jr (suitable) and Gbenro Ajibade. Etomi looks great as usual but every time she opens her mouth, she defeats her casting as a Warri bred damsel. More British than B-side, she has neither gumption nor grease to pull off the role and plays it sweetly like her routine girl next door character.

The best thing to be said for 10 Days in Sun City is that it isn’t as bad as you feared. That doesn’t mean it is any good either.

Film Review: Lost in London

Featured Image

Bonaventure (Alexx Ekubo) is a stranger in London. He is a recipient of a visitors pass to the United Kingdom, thanks to an academic exchange programme.  Bonaventure makes like many a Nigerian before him and stays back in search of greener pastures.

Okon (Ime Bishop Umoh) is also in London for a similar program. He is a village bumpkin who manages to mix up his arrival dates in an untidy manner that the film does not explain in full detail. Okon arrives in the UK after the program has run its course. He decides to stay back too and hustle, although he attempts means that are less than noble.

Both characters find themselves in different versions of all the lost in the big city cinema tropes, one that Nollywood hasn’t tired of making since Kingsley Ogoro made a splash with Osuofia in London. They beg, borrow are taken advantage of, mislead people, fall in love and plot the ultimate return home. It is quite perplexing that in the year of our Lord 2017, filmmakers somewhere got together to decide on this tired narrative as the most pressing for a feature length.

Viewers who come to Lost in London are unlikely to expect director Olasukanmi Adebayo to breathe new life into this subgenre of comedy. Even with such moderate expectations, Lost in London falls predictably short. Producer Uduak Isong Oguamanam and her collaborator Anthony Kehinde Joseph make a misbegotten attempt to plug their film into the present national mood, one that has seen thousands fleeing the country on account of economic hardship. Nothing wrong about this but Lost in London has nothing intelligent to comment upon or no new body of knowledge to add to the discourse.

It merely rehashes old gags and tired tropes and doesn’t even bother to make them refreshing. Bishop Umoh plays his signature Okon character and he is as unfunny as he was the last time around. Ekubo is an appealing enough screen place and in some agreeable scenes he proves he could have performed better with decent material.

The screenplay does not help Ekubo’s cause though and he slums it, performing for the camera for the most part as if he were in a high school play. His timing is off, and he is merely going through the scenes routinely without ever settling into his character. It doesn’t help that the jokes are bad and he has uninspired actors to play off against.

The film, unexciting as it is, trundles along to a stinker of ending. Okon and Bonaventure suddenly discover their humanity and their collective patriotic spirits kick in. One wants to move back home to help the rebuilding process. The other, out of nowhere delivers a terribly inspired and badly cut speech that is for lack of a better description, supremely unwatchable.

This turkey ending is sure to test even the most patient of viewers and those who have elected to sit through every kobo of their earned money will find themselves throwing in the towel at this point. Or throwing up at the utter ridiculousness of what has just unfolded.

D’banj Releases His New Album, ‘King Don Come’

Featured Image

Iconic Nigerian singer-songwriter, Oladapo Oyebanjo, known by his stage name D’banj, has released a new album titled “King Don Come.”

The artiste, also known as the “Koko Master”, announced on his Instagram handle that “King Don Come” will hit the markets on Friday.

He wrote: “#KingdonCome 7-7-17. Thank you Lord for your Grace.”

The project is the Kokomaster’s fourth solo studio album since he came into limelight 12 years ago.

The art work for the cover of the new album is designed in a very creative way to interpret the title “King Don Come”.

It was created by Nigerian visual Artist Nduka Abii, popularly known as Duks Arts, and it employed elements from the hit HBO TV series “Game Of Thrones.”

The album art depicts D’ banj as a medieval king sitting on a throne placed against the backdrop of a raging battle.

He is dressed in kingly robes and jewelry, with animal fur draping his shoulder, and his famous DB gold chain on his neck.

It portrays all that stands on the battle field, connoting a hard-fought victory that is straight from a legendary ‘story book’.

There are dragons all around and a baby fire-breather is perched on his arm, with two giant creatures loom behind his throne, and another flying in the sky.

D’banj who released his debut album ‘No Long Thing’ as a professional artiste in 2005, has strived to remained relevant in the fast-growing and competitive Nigerian music industry.

He was signed to artist of Mo’ Hits Records, and was also a member of its collective group, Mo’ Hits Allstars,a group that included artists Dr SID, Wande Coal, KaySwitch, and D’Prince.

On leaving Mo Hits Records, D’banj founded DB Records and signed his younger brother Kayswitch to the label alongside two producers, Jaysleek and Deevee.

The ‘Fall in Love’ crooner has won several music awards, including the awards for Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009.

He was also named Best International Act (Africa) at the 2011 BET Award, and the Best-selling African Artist at the 2014 World Music Awards, among other honours.

Some of his recent titles include ‘Extraordinary’, ‘Focus ‘and ‘Emergency’ released in 2016.

Photos From BANTU’s “Agberos International” Album Listening Session

Featured Image

On Tuesday (4th of July 2017), 13-Man musical band – BANTU, welcomed family, friends and fans into their private space; for a wonderful listening session of the album “Agberos International“.

The meeting was lead by Ade Bantu alongside the producer of the album – Aman Junaid; they both shared insights about the theme of the album; the steps of creation, and more wonderful details about the album.

According to the band’s spokesman – ‘Ade Bantu‘, the album took about eight [8] years to make. And it is a LABOUR OF LOVE.

After listening to the 10-tracks album which features “Tony Allen” and “Wana Wana” that night, I am confidently saying that: the album is an art with substantial value.

The album will be available on all digital platforms tomorrow “7-7-17“. Also, a limited amount of physical copies (including vinyl) will be made available for sale.

While we await the release of the album “Agberos International”; below are images taking by Abiola Balogun(Dohdohdawa) at the listening session.

EbonyLife TV At Four: The Life And Times Of Africa’s First Black Entertainment Network

Featured Image

When EbonyLife TV went live in mid 2013, it sought to be the global network for premium African entertainment.

It became Africa’s first global black entertainment network and it opened doors of communication between itself and the youth. Four years down the line can it be said to be living up to expectation?

Since its inception in 2013, over 4000 hours of original Pan African content has been created and produced by EbonyLife TV. Talk about getting a jump on lost time. Like a postman running late, EbonyLife has expedited the process of production backed by a team of highly trained and qualified staff. Within this timeframe, TV series have been dished out to much critical acclaim. The first seasons of On the Real, Sons of the Caliphate, Dere and The Governor have been widely successful leading to an order of second seasons for the aforementioned.

In 2015, EbonyLife TV joined the fray of the movie scene with its first offering titled, Fifty. The movie went on to generate ₦400million return on investment shattering a litany of records in the process. Dissatisfied by the status quo and unrelenting in the ruthless pursuit of excellence, another movie was released in 2016. The Wedding Party would go on to break even more records, some set by the initial offering. It grossed a whopping ₦450million from the box office alone earning it the number one spot on the highest grossing Nigerian movies of all time. Both movies have led to much anticipated spinoffs. Fifty, would go on to be adapted for TV as Fifty: The Series which premiered at the recent EbonyLife Film and TV Festival while a sequel to The Wedding Party is billed to be released December, 2017.

The potential of this precocious four year old might not even be fathomable by the most imaginative of us. Numbers do not lie; EbonyLife TV at four has only released two movies and has grossed nearly ₦1billion in funds. Maybe we could be talking of EbonyLife going toe to toe with global film production outfits in the next ten years or what may be said when the network turns 25? Your guess is as good as mine.

This week’s edition which was tagged the Governance, Youths and Social Media edition had participants share their views and also raised questions concerning governance in Nigeria and as it affects the young generation.

During the session which moderated by Oladele Ogunlana a capacity building consultant as well as a personal development coach, Omojuwa spoke passionately about how young people need to be more interested in the issues that has to with governance and the socio-economic well-being of Nigeria.‘Most young people in Nigeria today are naïve and that is a big problem’ he added.

Japheth J Omojuwa who was named on a list of Africa’s top “50 Movers and Shakers” by Switzerland’s Credit Suisse in 2015 also said he has been clamoring for change in Nigeria long before the APC political party was formed. Speaking about the 2015 general election he said ‘the 2015 election was a referendum on the former President Jonathan’s administration.’ He said he doesn’t regret voting out the last administration in Nigeria. Sharing his thoughts about the current Nigerian situation he said the Buhari administration has abandoned the ideals that brought it to power for political interest. And that the lapses in the Nigerian constitution has led to the current leadership quagmire in the presidency.

On moving forward as a nation, Omojuwa said the race to building a Nigeria of our dreams is a marathon and young people must begin to see beyond their immediate reality. He said ‘we should forget making any difference as young people if we don’t start getting involved in the political process early.’

Omojuwa took time to share the vision of the Omojuwa Foundation which according to him is to support education, entrepreneurship and tackle socio-economic challenges across the country. The evening ended with a network session as the participants enjoy the beautiful ambience on The Waterside Ikoyi.

Featured Image

JAY-Z’s new album “4.44” has been officially certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for 1 million albums sold and/or streamed in the United States less than a week after the album’s release.

Kanye West Quits Jay Z’s Tidal Over Money Dispute

RIAA tweeted the news with a picture of Jay and the company’s chairman and CEO Cary Sherman standing beside the platinum plaque for the album.

“Props to JAY, he’s done it again!” Sherman said in a statement. “Another Platinum album adds to an already iconic career.”

“4:44” is now Jay-Z’s 13th platinum solo studio album — the most of any hip-hop artist in history, according to RIAA.

In the critically acclaimed new album, which is currently accessible to existing Tidal and Sprint subscribers, Hov appears to shed new light on the rumours of infidelity that circulated his marriage to Beyoncé, last year – when she released her visual album, Lemonade.

Jay-Z Opens Up On Beyoncé Infidelity Rumours On New Album 4:44, Takes Aim At Kanye West

The 10-track album, which features Frank Ocean and Damian Marley, also sees him address Kanye West’s turbulent temperament at the end of 2016.

With today’s announcement that “4:44” had achieved Platinum status, JAY-Z has earned 13 Platinum (or higher) solo studio Album Awards in the United States – more than any other hip hop artist in the history of RIAA’s Gold & Platinum Program.

He is also the only hip hop artist with more than 10 RIAA Platinum (or higher) studio albums.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization that represents the recording industry in the United States.

Wikipedia records that its members consist of record labels and distributors, which the RIAA says “create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 85% of all legally sold recorded music in the United States.

VIDEO: Olamide ft. Davido – Summer Body

Featured Image
Olamide is out with the official video for his new single featuring Davido; dubbed “Summer Body”.

YBNL honcho, Olamide has released his much anticipated single titled “Summer Body”; and it featured the “Fall” crooner – Davido.

It’s always a good time when Olamide and Davido are on same track/music video; Summer Body isn’t any different from their previous collaborations.

Directed by House of Shoots Film and Production studio in  Miami; the video is all sort of fun and crisp which makes it befitting for the Pheelz produced tune.

With the song being an OK song, we can but notice the path Davido said: “With Yankee passport // dem say we Local”. Wait, isn’t that a shot at Wizkid?
