Wizkid Makes History, Becomes First African Artist To Headline Sold-Out Show At London’s Iconic Hall

Featured Image

Prominent Nigerian singer, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has made history, as he becomes the first African artist to headline a sold-out show at London’s most iconic venue, Royal Albert Hall, on Friday, September 29, 2017.

It is understood that Starboy took the legendary lane – joining Beatles, Adele, Elton – by being the first African artiste to achieve the feat after he sold out the venue in less the 72 hours and gave a very thrilling performance.

The show which was broadcast live on his Facebook page featured British act Yxng Bane and Wande Coal.

His one-hour stand-alone performance highlighted hit tracks from his early days in the industry to his recent days as Africa’s biggest artiste.

Wizkid’s collaborative track with Drake ‘One Dance’, up until September 22, was the most streamed song on Spotify, a feat that earned him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The track was actually what opened the door for his success outside Africa and made him a Sony Records priority – although, it is likely he would still have gotten there even without the patronage.

Admit it or dispute it, Wizkid has beyond doubt proven to the world once again that he is the biggest art in Africa and one of the most brightest of the modern era – a master of his unique brand of proficient creativity in Afrobeats.

Must Watch: What Lies Within (In Cinemas Now)

Featured Image

2017 has been quite the year for Nollywood.

From Isoken to Alakada Reloaded, local films have scored at the box office and this could be put down to the fact that Nigerian filmmakers have been putting in the extra hours to make better movies.

What Lies Within, a film written by Paul Utomi and directed by Vanessa Nzediegwu is one to see in cinemas.

Set in modern Lagos, What Lies Within is a thriller that documents twenty four hours in the life of two women in the middle of a rut. A seemingly small problem degenerates and adversely affects the lives of Ireti (Vanessa Nzediegwu) and Fiona (Michelle Dede), as well as those of their family and friends.

Extremely suspenseful and provoking proper discourse, on first watch, What Lies Within is a decent project.

It debuted in cinemas on the 8th of September.

Before that though, the premiere was held at Genesis Deluxe Cinemas, Palms, Lekki, Lagos and attracted big names like Rita Dominic, Chidi Mokeme, Femi Odugbemi, Judith Audu, Zara Udofia, Theresa Edem and Ashionye Michelle Raccah amongst others.

What Lies Within is a collaborative effort from A Cool Story Picture, Cornucopia Productions, VeeBlu Productions and Kukuruku Inc.

It features an ensemble cast that includes Michelle Dede, Ebele Okaro, Okey Uzoeshi, Kiki Omeili, Paul Utomi, Ken Erics, Tope Tedela plus a cameo appearance by Steve Onu (Yaw).

You should peep.

Hugh Hefner: Playboy Founder Dies Aged 91

Featured Image

Popular American founder of the international adult magazine Playboy, Hugh Hefner, has died at the age of 91, his company said late Wednesday.

Playboy magazine disclosed last night that Hefner died from natural causes “surrounded by loved ones” at his Playboy Mansion home in Beverly Hills.

He is survived by his 31-year-old wife, Crystal, and four grown children, Playboy said.

The silk-robed Casanova whose Playboy men’s magazine popularized the term “centerfold,” had glamorized an urbane bachelor lifestyle and helped spur the sexual revolution of the 1960s.

He founded Playboy in 1953 with $600 of his own money and built the magazine into a multimillion-dollar entertainment empire that at its 1970s peak included TV shows, a jazz festival and a string of Playboy Clubs whose cocktail waitresses wore bunny ears and cottontails.

Hefner faced obscenity charges in 1963 for publishing and distributing Playboy, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict.

He had once claimed to have slept with more than 1,000 women, and credited the impotence drug Viagra with maintaining his libido.

“I am a kid in a candy store,” Hefner famously said. “I dreamed impossible dreams, and the dreams turned out beyond anything I could possibly imagine. I’m the luckiest cat on the planet.”

PSquare’s Counsel, Festus Keyamo Issues Official Statement On Split, Absolves Their Wives

Featured Image

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and counsel for Paul and Peter Okoye (alias PSquare), Festus Keyamo, has broken the silence on the “obvious” split and “apparent” feud between the brothers.

360nobs had earlier reported that the duo may have gone their separate ways as cryptic messages on social media recently suggested that there is a renewed rift between the two brothers.

However, the brawl between the brothers took an ugly dimension as LIB published a video in the early hours of today in which the duo alongside their big brother Jude Okoye can be seen in physical and verbal altercations – nearly leading to an exchange of punches – at their lawyer’s office.

The incident had set the internet abuzz all day as netizens – both well-wishers and critics – waded in with most blaming their wives for the feud.

In an attempt to absolve their wives of the blame in the ongoing feud and then quell misinformation, Keyamo, who represents PSquare, took to his Facebook page to release an official statement.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria and lawyer to Psquare, Festus Keyamo released a statement clarifying the issues involved in the breakup of the group.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria and lawyer to Psquare, Festus Keyamo released a statement clarifying the issues involved in the breakup of the group

He further spoke about the video circulating online showing the Okoye’s using abusive language and threatening one another.

The statement read: “Our attention has been drawn to the on-going feud between the Psquare brothers in online, print and electronic media.

“We have also been inundated with calls from the media to authenticate the correspondence Peter Okoye sent to our office, indicating his intention to terminate the contract between the brothers for various reasons and the online video showing a purported scuffle between the brothers in our Chambers.

“Firstly, while it is obvious that none of these materials were released from our Chambers, we are thoroughly saddened and embarrassed by these developments.

“As their close friends and lawyers over many years, we have done our very best to manage their differences over time and very prominent personalities have been invited in the past to intervene.

“We are well aware that we have a duty to keep the details of their disagreements confidential, so we shall say nothing here on the issues at stake.

“None of their wives is at fault. In fact, the wives have kept their respectable and dignified distances from all the issues involved. THEY HAVE NEVER INTERFERED in any way.

“We also want to state that whilst all the three brothers may have genuine grievances, nobody’s life is at risk. All the various incidents that happened in our Chambers (some as late at 12 midnight and 2am and one of which was captured in the online video) arose out of various meetings that were genuine attempts at resolving their differences.”

360Review: Omawumi – Timeless

Featured Image

The first two albums released by singer Omawumi are essentially the same record. Mirroring each other not just in the choice of album art,- close up shot of her face and big hair,- but also in the strategic choice of material.

Carefully curated with singles that could easily be serviced to Top 10 radio as well as dance club DJs, 2010’s Wonder Woman experimented with Kwaito, highlife and dancehall resulting in gems such as Into the Music and Serious Love Nwantinti. Lasso of Truth released three years later remains thoroughly enjoyable but even at its finest moments, a strong thread of cynicism runs through, suggesting it was made by committee, to repeat the success of the first record.

For her third merry go round, Omawumi could not have taken a more divergent approach. Signed to new management and with an eye on the international market, Omawumi has carefully downplayed her considerable hit making abilities and embraced a richer, fuller, jazzier sound. One that mixes Fela Kuti and the throbbing pull of Afrobeat with the vivacious scatting of jazz songstresses gone by. It is still early days yet but the results are mixed.

Signs of this transition were manifest in the album’s two promotional singles. Play na Play which features a supporting turn by the Grammy winning Beninese diva, Angelique Kidjo and adopts a cautioning tone, is set to a haunting beat that plays like a fever dream.

The follow up, Butterflies is a straight up evocative ballad that showcases Omawumi’s range and vocal power. It is the kind of single that the old Omawumi would follow up with another dance ready scorcher like Somori, or Bottom Belle. There is no such obvious crowd pleasing fare on Timeless and the closest she comes to hitting the clubs is with the 80’s pop disco/funk throwback, Somtin. She hits the high notes, singing a joyfully familiar tune on the chorus, Somtin no fine/ em mama like am/ em papa like am/everybody like am.

What the record lacks in disposable pop tunes, it makes up for in strong vocal performances and swirling percussive and horn sessions that demand to be performed live. Dolapo is Omawumi warning a lover to beware of the wiles of the title character, slinking in the background and waiting to sink her clutches in at the moment of least resistance. Omawumi may be worried but she delivers the material with a cocksure swagger that listeners begin to worry for Dolapo instead. Obviously, the wonder woman can hold her own against any Dolapo, or Uche, or Yewande for that matter.

The disc is never more interesting than when Omawumi enters with jazz standards like I No Sure, a delicate yet fiery kiss off to a feckless paramour, or a superb, anglicized cover of Fela’s love song, Ololufe, complete with sax solo and stretches of pure, divine mix of instrumentation, uninterrupted by any vocal support. The subtle, swirly E Don Do Me rounds out the disc’s first and strongest half.

There is still a bit of repetition embedded within the record. If Lasso of Truth had the superb I Go Go, then Timeless bows with the less than effective E Don Loss as Omawumi’s compulsory nod to the reggae genre.

With urging from the South African producing super group, Uhuru, Omawumi reworks Salif Keita’s classic ode to the motherland, Africa, lifting the tempo and dulling the emotional intensity. It is clearly a song better left untouched.

It is a brave thing Omawumi is doing and while the result produces some of the finest and most interesting work of her career, she still risks alienating core audiences who are used to the friendly afropop sounds of albums past. Already, the promotional singles have not made much of a dent on the pop landscape.

She calls this album Timeless and a couple of songs may live up to the title entire record is still far from. At only eleven records and a 49 minutes running time, the margin for error has to remain as slim as possible. Timeless works when it does but only about half of the songs are keepers.

Think of Timeless not as Omawumi’s definitive record, even though she would like you to, but as a primer for greatness still unbirthed. Should she stay the course, it shouldn’t be long before she comes full circle.

P-Square Reportedly Split Amid Rumours Of Renewed Rift

Featured Image

There are strong reports everywhere on the internet that Paul and Peter Okoye of P-Square have gone their separate ways amid a renewed rift between the two brothers.

Although the duo have been posting cryptic messages on social media recently suggesting they may have both split as a group, none has openly come out to confirm or deny their break up.

It is understood that the recent split has led to the cancellation of their tour, which has also led to many fans believing that the brothers had broken up.

The duo had gone their separate ways in 2016, after reportedly engaging in a physical fight.

The cause of the disagreement was not unconnected to a number of issues, including whether their elder brother, Jude Okoye should remain their manager.

For two years running, Peter has repeatedly stated that the group needs a new manager, as he is no longer comfortable with Jude as their manager.

Meanwhile, Paul wants Jude to continue as their handler; hence the bad blood between them.

They later united and dropped some hits for fans who had pleaded for them not to go solo.

However, social media was set abuzz after Peter posted a Snapchat video revealing that he is in Philadelphia on his own for a solo show – without his twin brother, Paul.

“My name is Mr P,” Peter said “As from today, guess what? It’s show time, I’m about to go on stage.”

LIB claims that Peter has reportedly sent to their lawyer Festus Keyamo a demand for the termination of the agreement between the group – P-Square.

In the letter, Peter was said to have defended his decision by making some serious allegations against his twin Paul and older brother/group manager Jude.

According to Peter, Paul is no longer willing to co-operate with him, even going as far as cancelling their planned US tour this year without informing him, and he (Peter) has exhausted all options to make it work.

He also accused Paul of slandering his wife and children with lies on social media, and alleged that they’ve now been receiving threatening messages.

In the letter, it was learnt that Peter said he had had enough. He loves and wishes his brothers well in their respective careers, he said, and he is opting out and adopting the name Mr P, adding that he cannot betray his wife and kids.

Tributes Pour In For Soul Great Charles Bradley | He Died At 68

Featured Image

Tributes have flowed in for Charles Bradley, the soul singer whose robust voice and defiantly upbeat outlook won him stardom in his final years after a life of poverty, after died from cancer yesterday.

The 68-year-old “Screaming Eagle of Soul,” died in Brooklyn on Saturday, a statement by his publicist, said.

It is understood that Bradley was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2016, which spread to his liver.

Earlier this month, while announcing the cancellation of tour dates in the US, South America and Europe, he had said that though he had beaten that illness, the cancer had spread to his liver.

“I love all of you out there that made my dreams come true,” he said in a statement then. “When I come back, I’ll come back strong, with God’s love. With God’s will, I’ll be back soon.”

However, on Saturday a statement posted to social media said:

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Charles Bradley. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Bradley, known for a powerful and pained rasp that he used to channel both his demons and deep gratitude, released his debut album `No Time For Dreaming’, at 62.

The album was named Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 50 albums of 2011. His next album, “Victim of Love,” was released two years later, followed earlier this year by his third and last album, “Changes.”

A documentary on his life, “Charles Bradley: Soul of America,” followed his journey and rise to fame.

He openly shared his idolization of the legendary James Brown after first seeing Brown perform in 1962 and became a totemic artist for the Daptone label, best known for its revivalist ’60s soul.

“Charles was truly grateful for all the love he’s received from his fans and we hope his message of love is remembered and carried on,” a statement from Daptone read.

“Thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Tributes have flowed in for the talented musician.

Daptone record label co-founder Gabriel Roth, who discovered Bradley, said in a statement yesterday:

“The world lost a ton of heart today. Charles was somehow one of the meekest and strongest people I’ve ever known. His pain was a cry for universal love and humanity.

“His soulful moans and screams will echo forever on records and in the ears and hearts of those who were fortunate enough to share time with him.”

The Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli wrote: “Goodnight, Charles Bradley. You sang from beyond and gave the best hugs.”

The Canadian jazz quartet Badbadnotgood said: “We shall forever remember the amazing shows we played together and the moments that the ‘Screaming Eagle of Soul’ through his power and spirit made us cry. Rest In Peace to a true hero CB.”

With All DISRESPECT! Jay-Z Thinks US President Trump Is A ‘Joke’

Featured Image

Popular rapper Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, has spoken out about Donald Trump’s “joke” presidency and paid homage to Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, who committed suicide in July.

In an interview with BBC Radio 1’s Clara Amfo on Friday, the Brooklyn rapper shared that he found the Trump presidency to be “a joke,” but that he remains hopeful looking to the future.

“I believe that we are resilient, especially us as black people and especially the culture. We’ve been through so much more than this guy,” Jay Z said. “This guy, I’m looking at him like, man, this is a joke, with all — I can’t even say with all due respect — with all disrespect.”

Read full comments on Trump below:

“I believe that everything that happens in life is for your greatest good. I don’t think that this [would] happen if we weren’t prepared to handle it. I’m just actually looking forward to what’s next after that because usually when things are darkest, light is on its way.

I’m not fearful. I believe that we are resilient, especially us as black people and especially the culture, we’ve been through so much more than this guy. This guy, I’m looking at him like, man, this is a joke, with all — I can’t even say with all due respect — with all dis respect. I just think he’s not a very sophisticated man, especially when it comes to the idea of until everyone is free, no one is free. Period.

That’s just a fact. We are all linked some kind of way. So if you oppress a certain people, everyone is in danger, karmically and in real life. If I’m being oppressed and you have this big, nice mansion, I’m coming inside there. That’s gonna happen, that’s just how life is. So on a practical level, that just makes sense. On a spiritual and karmic level, if we’re all children of God, then we’re all brothers and sisters, and at some point, if you’re doing that to your brother, then that can’t last.”

Jay-Z also performed his Linkin Park collaboration “Numb/Encore” in the Live Lounge in memory of Chester Bennington, telling Amfo that he hopes Bennington’s suicide “serves as a wake up call” about mental health.

“You think because he’s a performer and sold 14 million records that equates to happiness,” he says. “He’s telling you he became numb. You just get bigger audiences and move further away from yourself.”
